3 Please read the safety nstructons carefully before the INITIAL USE OF THIS mcroscope. Safety nstructons 3 General Never place the devce on an unstable surface. The devce may be damaged f dropped. Keep the devce away from chldren. It s not a toy. Please also note the safety nstructons and operatng nstructons of the other devces to whch the devce s connected. In commercal and ndustral establshments, the accdent preventon regulatons ssued by the trade assocatons for electrcal systems and equpment must be observed. In schools, tranng centres, hobby or do-t-yourself workshops, the operaton of electronc products should be responsbly montored. If you have any questons regardng ths devce, ts operaton, safety or proper connecton, please contact our customer servce department. The seller and or dstrbutor assume no responsblty for any losses occurrng whle usng the devce, or for thrd- party clams. Envronmental condtons Avod placng heavy mechancal loads on top of the devce. Protect the mcroscope from vbraton and forceful collsons. Do not drop or shake the devce. Do not expose the devce to hgh temperatures (above 60 C) or dramatc temperature fluctuatons. Protect the mcroscope from drect sunlght. Do not place t n the vcnty of heatng applances. Protect the devce from humdty. Do not use the devce n rooms wth hgh humdty e.g. bathrooms. Protect the devce from dust. Do not use the devce n a dusty envronment. Also, t cannot be ruled out that some pants, plastcs or furnture cleaners may damage the materal of the housng or accessores. To avod undesrable marks on furnture, keep the devce away from senstve surfaces. Potental Hazard If an object or lqud should get nto the devce, arrange for t to be checked by a qualfed techncan before reuse. We recommend contactng our customer servce department should ths occur. Rechargeable battery Rechargeable batteres (battery pack or nserted batteres) must not be exposed to excessve heat such as sunshne, fre or the lke. Cleanng and care Always store the devce n a clean, dry place. Use a soft dry cloth to clean the exteror surfaces, such as the enclosed cleanng fabrc.

7 Intal operaton INITIAL OPERATION Insertng battery Gently press the lever mechansm on the bottom of the devce and remove the battery compartment cover. Then, wth the polarty markngs at the top left corner, nsert the Lthumon battery nto the battery compartment. For the sake of safety, the polarty s also prnted on the battery compartment. Chargng the battery Plug the Power Adapter cable nto the mcroscope power supply port. Then plug the other end nto an electrcal power source. The battery requres approxmately 3 hours to fully charge. Durng chargng, the battery chargng ndcator lght lumnates red. When the battery ndcator lght turns off, the battery s fully charged. A full charge provdes approxmately 4 hours of operaton. The battery s also charged whle connected to the USB port on a computer. Battery status/charge status The battery charge status s shown at the bottom rght of the dsplay wndow. LED brghtness and mage qualty are addtonal ndcators of the battery charge. If the battery charge s weak, the llumnaton and the mage qualty wll be reduced. 7

8 8 Intal operaton Insertng the mcro SD card and SD card status dsplay Turn off the dgtal mcroscope. The mcro SD card slot has a sprng mechansm. When the SD card s nserted nto the slot, the card locks nto place. The SD card con appears on the rght sde of the dsplay wndow. Before capturng mages, the SD card must be formatted (see Formatng SD on page 14). To remove the SD card, push on the SD card. Do not apply force when nsertng the SD card nto the SD card slot. 9 Image capture 9 ON/OFF To turn ON or OFF please press the On/Off key. mage capture 1. Turn on the devce, as descrbed above Place a specmen on the specmen platform. 3. To nsert the specmen, move the specmen platform n the downward drecton wth the control knob to the rght. Then move the specmen slde n the upward drecton nto the vcnty of the mcroscope aperture. 4. Magnfcaton occurs n the mage feld by adjustng the magnfcaton settng, utlsng the knurled wheel (4) and adjustng the specmen stage heght wth the rght control knob. When the specmen on the plattform s brought up to the bottom part of the mcroscope, t s possble to turn the knurled wheel to the rght (+) to adjust a second focus for maxmum magnfcaton When the specmen s close up, there are two optons for magnfyng the specmen and focusng the camera (see ) 8 5. Fx the specmen slde nto poston wth the knob on the left hand sde (LOCK). The control knob on the left (LOCK - UNLOCK) sets the resstance of the specmen platform control knob on the rght (UP - DOWN). As the knob s tghtened, the adjustment of the specmen platform becomes ncreasngly stff. 6. Set a sutable LED brghtness. 7. Dgtally magnfy the vew utlsng the Zoom lever (see page 10). 8. Press the mage capture button. For subsequent measurements on the computer, capture an mage wth a mllmetre scale usng the set magnfcaton or wth the enclosed measurng table. Hold the devce steady whle pressng the mage capture button, or rsk that the photo s blurred. Read more about ths n the Tmer secton on page 12. RECORDING VIDEOS 9. To swtch to vdeo mode, repeatedly press the key untl the vdeo con appears at the top left. To start recordng press the mage capture button 8. To stop recordng, press the mage capture button agan. 10. Two resolutons are avalable n vdeo mode: VGA (640 x 480 pxels) and QVGA (320 x 240 pxels). To change the resoluton, press the key and then select between VGA and QVGA. Ext the menu by pressng the key.

10 10 Play back PLAY BACK You access the Play back menu by repeatedly pressng the key untl the play back con appears at the top left. If only vdeos are stored on the card, the con s dsplayed. You can scroll between photos or vdeos wth the / keys. Navgaton Start play back by pressng the key. For Pause press the key agan. To fast forward or rewnd durng play back, press the Stop fast forward or rewnd wth the key. / keys. Zoom To adjust the dgtal zoom (1x to 4x), fnd the zoom lever on the exteror of the dsplay screen. The zoom factor s shown at the left of the dsplay. In play back mode, a thumbnal vew of mages can be dsplayed by pressng the zoom lever n the mnus drecton (-). Zoom lever Enlarge (zoom + ) Reduce (zoom - ) Dsplay (avalable n the photo functon only) To swtch between colour and greyscale, press the key. The changeover s n the followng sequence: colour, greyscale as a postve mage and greyscale as an nverse or negatve mage. + M

11 Play back menu 11 PLAY BACK MENU Durng play back, you can access the play back menu by pressng the key. Select one of the followng functons: Delete, Protect or Slde Show. Navgaton / : Selecton of menu tem : Ext menu : Confrm selecton, perform acton Delete: Choose between deletng the fle currently shown on the dsplay or all of the fles. To delete, select OK (Execute) n the subsequent confrmaton prompt. Fle protecton for photo or vdeo fles: In the followng selecton, you can protect the mage on the dsplay or all mages aganst deleton or remove the exstng protecton: Lock one: protect the dsplayed mage Unlock one: remove the protecton for the dsplayed mage Lock all: protect all mages Unlock all: remove protecton on all mages For protected mages, a key s shown at the top of the dsplay wndow. Slde Show: Start a slde show. In a submenu, the frame rate can be set to 2, 5 or 8 seconds. To ext, press the button.

12 12 Image Settngs MAIN MENU / IMAGE SETTINGS To access the man menu, press the key. Select one of the followng functons: Resoluton, Tme Lapse, Qualty or Sharpness. To return to the prevous menu, press the key. To ext the menu, press the key. Resoluton VGA, 1.3, 3.0, 5.0, 8.0 and 12 megapxels are avalable for selecton. Tme Lapse Wth the tmer functon, a fxed number of mages (frames) can be captured automatcally at preset ntervals. Frames Set the number of mages to be taken. In the example shown on the left, 32 mages are captured. Interval Set the tme nterval to determne when the mages are to be captured. In the example shown on the left, an mage s captured every 15 seconds. To prevent shakng the mcroscope whle capturng a sngle mage, set the nterval to 0:0:0 and ext the menu. Next press the mage capture button. A photo s taken after a delay of 1 second. Changng the dgtal zoom results n premature termnaton of the tmer functon.

13 Basc Settngs 13 Qualty Select the sze / compresson rate of the JPG fle. Sharpness Set the sharpness for angular objects n the mage. MAIN MENU - BASIC SETTINGS To access the man menu, press the key. Date dsplay, language, date and tme and other settngs can be made here: Language Set desred menu language. Power Save When the Power Save energy savng mode s ON, the unt automatcally swtches OFF after the preset tme. Settng ths mode extends the servce lfe of the rechargeable battery. To deactvate the energy savng mode, select OFF.

14 14 Basc Settngs Date Stamp Here choose the format of the date and tme. TV Out Ths devce has an AV output capacty. For Europe, set the TV standard to PAL. Connect the TV devce to the mcroscope usng the suppled AV cable. The montors adapt automatcally. Date/Tme Frst set the date format (e.g. DD/MM/YY). To access the format settng, use the button. Then set the date and tme. Format SD Note: The SD card must be formatted before use. Durng the formattng process all data s deleted. For ths reason a warnng message s dsplayed. You must confrm selecton wth OK/Execute. If ths menu tem s selected by mstake, choose Cancel. Sys. Reset Ths functon resets all settngs n the menu to the orgnal settngs. Verson Shows the current software verson on the dsplay.

15 PC Software Installaton 15 PC SOFTWARE INSTALLATION No drvers are requred for the nstallaton of the devce. Insert the suppled CD nto the CD drve. If the nstallaton does not start automatcally, on the CD select SETUP/EXE to nstall the software on the computer. The software nstallaton runs completely ndependently. For the remander of the nstallaton, follow the nstallaton wzard. For software nstallaton on MAC OS reference the MAC folder on the CD. Connect the devce to the computer Connect the LCD Dgtal Mcroscope to a computer usng the suppled USB cable. The dsplay wndow wll automatcally turn on and dsplay a selecton of functons. To vew a lve mage n the PortableCapture software select Prevew on Computer. To mport photo(s) and vdeo(s) from the SD card nto the database, or to mport the photo and vdeo drectory of the PortableCapture software, select Upload Images. The computer requres a moment to nstall the software. Start the software from the desktop. Please set the brghtness! An ncorrect settng may cause a blank screen to be dsplayed.

16 16 PC Software Manual PC SOFTWARE MANUAL The followng pages explan how to use the PC software. The program nterface s multlngual. To choose a language, select Optons > Language > Englsh. The captured or mported mage s dsplayed on the rght hand sde as a thumbnal. Thumbnal mage dsplay Prevew wndow When the mouse s over a thumbnal, the mage appears n the prevew wndow. When you clck the rght mouse button, a submenu opens, whch dsplays the followng optons: - Clck Open to see a prevew mage - Clck Save to save the mage - Clck Copy to save the mage to the clpboard for further processng - Clck Delete to delete the mage When Save s selected, a dalogue box opens whch allows you to choose the fle name and fle storage locaton. To save a sngle mage, clck the photo camera con at the top of the wndow or press the F11 key. Photos are stored n the Photos folder. The captured mage s dsplayed on the rght sde of the montor as a thumbnal mage. Vdeo recordng starts when the vdeo camera con at the top of the wndow s clcked or by actvatng Capture > Vdeo. Recordng stops when the con s clcked agan. Vdeos are saved n the Vdeos folder. In PC camera mode, the mage sze s lmted to 320 x 240 and 640 x 480 pxels.

Drectory where the vdeos are stored. Import mages from the SD card. Ext the program. Under ths menu tem you can set the sze of the prevew mage. To dsplay the date and tme on the mage. To set the menu language. To swtch between normal and full screen dsplay. To change to the normal dsplay, double-clck the mage dsplay. To dsplay a crosshar. Captures a sngle mage. Starts a vdeo recordng. Clck agan to stop recordng. Tmer FUNCTION The Tmer con s dsplayed n the toolbar. The Tmer con s used to capture mages at preset ntervals. Select Photo or Vdeo. Clck the arrow on the rght to set the date. Clck to determne the hour, mnute and seconds poston. Then clck the rght mouse button. In the next menu dsplay, adjust the tme wth Step up and Step down. Interval (sec): Set the nterval n seconds to preset the ntervals at whch the mages are to be captured. Vdeo tme (sec): In Vdeo mode ths s the length of tme a vdeo shall be recorded. Total Number: The number of mages. For longer tme ntervals, t s useful to see how many mages have been taken. You can obtan ths nformaton under Captured number. To start clck Start ; to stop clck Stop.

18 18 PC Software Manual Image szng As the man program s nstalled, software s also nstalled that allows you to resze mage(s). To utlse ths feature, double-clck on an mage n the gallery on the rght hand sde. At the bottom of the wndow a slder s dsplayed whch s used to enlarge or reduce the mage sze. Save or delete the edted mage, and/or copy t to the clpboard, etc. An explanaton of the ndvdual cons s lsted on page 19. Calbraton The new calbraton functon allows accurate measurements to be made whle capturng an mage. Adjust the knurled wheel, on the mcroscope, place the measurng table (or optonally a mllmetre gauge) on the specmen platform. Then press the Capture button to capture an mage. Wth ths mage you can make measurements on all photos that were captured at the same magnfcaton. Although t s most accurate to nclude the measurng table wth each specmen whle capturng each mage. 481 mm Open the mage n the mage prevew. Clck Calbraton. Based on the pcture above, use the mouse to drag a lne from the left edge of the mllmetre mark to the left edge of the next mark. A wndow wll dsplay, to prompt you to enter the dsplayed measurement. In ths case, t s 1 mm. Confrm wth clckng OK. Clck the con. You can now make measurements n the mage.

The screen s blank. Drt or mperfectons on the screen. Mcroscope s connected to the TV devce, but no mage dsplays on the screen. The battery charger ndcator does not lght-up n red when the power supply s connected to an outlet. -Or- the battery does not charge. Suggested Soluton Charge the battery. Confrm devce s turned on. Confrm battery s charged. Make sure that the specmen to be magnfed s placed correctly under the lens. See Devce Vew on page 5. Carefully clean the screen and lens wth the enclosed cleanng cloth. Make sure that the TV devce s turned on. Set the TV devce to the correct vdeo nput. Confrm the vdeo cable s securely connected to the vdeo output of the mcroscope and the vdeo nput s securely connected to the TV devce. Connect to the DC nput of the mcroscope. Confrm the electrcal socket s functonng properly.
