5 Snic PDF Server Intrductin The purpse f the Investintech Snic PDF Server is t cllect dcuments, prcess them i.e. cnvert them t PDF and return the result back t the sender. All cllected files are placed int a queue and prcessed using several threads. The files are cllected by the fllwing 2 methds: Frm the Lcal Netwrk see sectin 5 Via (MS Exchange Server, POP3, MAPI ) see sectin System Requirements The fllwing are the system requirements fr using Snic PDF Server: MSXML 6.0 and Visual C Runtime (Micrsft Visual C SP1 Redistributable Package) installed. Windws Server 2000, Windws Server 2003, Windws Server 2008 and Windws Server 2008 R2, r a client (desktp) cnfiguratin f Windws 2000, Windws XP Windws Vista r Windws 7. Minimum 128 MB RAM. Minimum 60 MB free disk space fr the PDF Server prgram and 1-10 gigabytes free disk space fr string temprary data (this amunt depends n the traffic and prgram cnfiguratin (e.g. whether the prcessed files are stred n the Server cmputer). Access t system (if the files are t be sent via ). Sharing f specified flders fr incming and utging files (if the clients will send files via lcal netwrk and Watched Flders will be lcated n the server cmputer). Access t specified flders n ther cmputers (if the server will pick up files fr prcessing by lcal netwrk and Watched Flders will be lcated n clients cmputers). Crrespnding MS Office applicatins installed (in case yu want t use Snic PDF Server t cnvert MS Office dcument t PDF). 6 Snic PDF Server Befre Installing Snic PDF Server 2.1 Required Sftware Updates The fllwing sftware updates shuld be installed prir t installing Snic PDF Server. MSXML 6.0 SP1 dwnlad frm : Visual C Runtime dwnlad frm: Nte: If this sftware is nt installed befrehand, yu will be prmpted t dwnlad and install it during the installatin f Snic PDF Server. 2.2 Additinal Requirements fr Windws Vista If yu are installing Snic PDF Server n Windws Vista, please make sure the User Accunt Cntrl is turned OFF i.e. disabled. 2.3 Starting the Print Spler Befre installing Snic PDF Server, please make sure the Windws service Print Spler is started (Cntrl Panel -> Administrative Tls -> Services). 7 Snic PDF Server Installing Snic PDF Server Imprtant ntes: Install as administratr the applicatin must be installed by the administratr i.e. the user accunt with Administratr privileges. Remve previus versin f Snic PDF Server if a versin f Snic PDF Server is already installed, it must be uninstalled first including all registry files left behind. In rder t begin installing the Snic PDF Server duble-clicks the executable file (setup.exe). The fllwing windw will be displayed. 9 Snic PDF Server 3.0 The fllwing ptins are available: Installing t a default flder - if yu want t install t default flder (C:\Prgram Files\Investintech.cm Inc\Snic PDF Server 3.0), just click Next. Installing t a different flder t install t any ther flder, click Brwse and lcate the desired flder Checking the disk cst - yu als have the ptin f checking the available space n yur lcal discs/partitins (see sectin 3.1). Yu can still review the settings and chse t g back and mdify them. In case yu are satisfied with the chsen parameters, click Next t begin installing the prgram. The fllwing windw will be displayed. 13 Snic PDF Server Checking the Disk Cst The Disc Cst ptin allws yu t check the amunt f available space n yur hard disks and partitins and make it easier fr yu t decide where yu want the applicatin installed. Figure 11: Chsing the trial ptin The fllwing ptins are available: Start Trial chse this ptin if yu want t be able t use the prgram withut registering i.e. just click it and the prgram will start; the limitatins t using this versin f the prgram are It can be used fr n lnger than 30 days Watermarks will be displayed thrughut the cnverted files Yu can cnvert 3 pages per dcument Full Trial chse this ptin if yu want t use a fully functinal versin f the prgram fr a perid f 30 days; yu will be required t fill ut the registratin frm Buy Nw chse this ptin t purchase the prgram Activate a license - 1. 16 Snic PDF Server Activating Snic PDF Server / Entering the PIN After purchasing the Snic PDF Server license, yu will receive a PIN number. In rder t enter it, click Activate License within the startup dialg. Figure 12: Chsing the Activate a License ptin. The main cnsle will be displayed and please press Activate Nw (tp-right crner). First enter the 12 digit PIN number yu have received (nte that the prgram will aut-ppulate the input field belw with a different PIN which yu shuld give t ur representative) 2. Then, call Next, prvide the number which is shwn in the input fields belw the phne number (immediately after yu enter the 12 digit PIN) 4. Finally, enter the authrizatin cde and click Activate Page: 17 / 74

18 Snic PDF Server Snic PDF Server Interface This sectin will list and explain all elements f the Snic PDF Server interface. Figure 14: Snic PDF Server Interface The fllwing ptins and parameters are available: Manage this is the screen displayed by default where yu have the ptin f starting the prgram either as service r as an applicatin Start Service click this buttn t start using Snic PDF Server as a service (see sectin 5) Start Applicatin click this buttn t start using Snic PDF Server as an applicatin (see sectin 11) Mnitr - the cnsle fr mnitring nging jbs (see sectin 13) Cnfigure - the ptins fr pening a cnfiguratin file, saving a backup cnfiguratin file, etc (see sectin 5.2) Jb Tickets the ptin fr managing the jb tickets, i.e. all cnversins (see sectin 11) Activate Prduct (enter PIN) (tp-right crner buttn) the ptin fr activating the prduct (see sectin 4) Lg file the ptin fr viewing the lg file (see sectin 5.1) Help file the ptin fr viewing the manual. 19 Snic PDF Server Viewing the lg file In rder t view the lg file, click Lg File ptin in the upper right crner f the main interface. Figure 16: Viewing the lg file (step 2/2) Each lg file cntains PDFServer.cfg at its beginning, i.e. the exact cnfiguratin used t start the server as well as infrmatin n which server mdules had been started. The lg file is then used fr lgging infrmatin n errrs, warnings and exceptins s that it can help slving issues that might have happened. Page: 19 / 74

20 Snic PDF Server 3.0 Nte: The maximum allwed size fr the lg file is 300 KB. In case this size is exceeded, a new lg file will be created autmatically. 5.2 Cnfiguring Snic PDF Server Snic PDF Server allws yu t save and use multiple prgram cnfiguratins. 21 Snic PDF Server 3.0 Validate the ptin fr validating the cnfiguratin file (see sectin 5.2.2) Opening the Cnfiguratin File In rder t pen and apply a previusly saved cnfiguratin file, chse ptin Open within the Cnfigure screen. File Prcessing Flders the ptin fr managing the paths t the flders which will be used fr string files i.e. rganizing files accrding t their status (see sectin 8). 23 Snic PDF Server Validatin f the Cnfiguratin File The purpse f cnfiguratin file validatin is t check if all imprtant infrmatin has been specified because the Snic PDF Server cannt functin prperly in case invalid parameters have been set in the PDFServer.cfg file. During the validatin f the PDFServer.cfg file, the Snic PDF Server checks if all required paths have been specified, if the addresses r dmains have a crrect frmat, etc. In rder t validate the cnfiguratin file, first pen it and then chse ptin Validate frm the Cnfigure screen. 24 Snic PDF Server Cllecting Input Files frm the Lcal Netwrk The Snic PDF Server allws yu t cllect and cnvert files frm yur lcal netwrk. The first step in setting up this methd is specifying the flders which will be used fr string the input files. These flders are called Watched Flders In rder t start setting up the Watched Flders, chse Open frm the Cnfigure screen. The fllwing ptins are available: Yu can either click n the + symbl t expand and manage the existing Watched Flders r click New Mnitred Flder t create a new ne. 6.1 Managing the Watched Flders The Snic PDF Server allws yu t specify flders, called watched flders which will be used fr placing the input files. The Snic PDF Server then autmatically mnitrs these flders fr new files and prcesses them. In rder t start managing the Watched Flders, click the + next t that label. Output Flder specify the flder which will be used fr string prcessed dcuments. 6.2 Creating a New Watched Flder In rder t create a new watched flder fllw these steps: 1. click Cnfigure in the main menu 2. use Open t pen the desired cnfiguratin file 3. click Watched Flders within the cnfiguratin tree structure n the left 4. click the New Mnitred Flder Figure 29: Creating a New Watched Flder (step 1/2) The fllwing windw will be displayed. Brwse - click this buttn t setup a mnitred flder i.e. the flder where yu shuld place the input files s Snic PDF Server culd spt it and cnvert it Mnitred and Output flders are the same tick this ptin if yu want t use the same flder fr bth mnitring the input files and saving the results. Mnitr subflders chse this ptin if yu want the Snic PDF Server t autmatically mnitr all subflders within the watched flder. Custm ticket enabled chse this ptin if yu want the Snic PDF Server t use the custm ticket instead f predefined ne; the first step is putting the custm ticket int the same flder as the prcessing file. Otherwise the file will be prcessed the usual way. Custm ticket name s frmat depends n prcessing file s name (e.g. Dcument.dc and Dcument.dc.tikd is pair file s and the crrespnding custm ticket s names). Mnitred Flder File Name Filter click t enable the file name filter (fr further infrmatin n adding a new filter, see sectin 6.2.1). Page: 27 / 74

28 Snic PDF Server 3.0 Exclude If this is un-checked and the File filter is checked, file list will be used as prcessing list (nly thse files will be prcessed). If this and the File Filter ptin are bth checked, the file list will be used t skip the crrespnding files. Output Flder click Brwse t set the flder fr saving the prcessed files. Failed Flder specify the flder which will be used fr placing input files which culd nt be prcessed. Pririty set the desired pririty fr this watched flder in the prcessing queue (1 fr highest). Default tickets fr cnversin the ptins fr pinting the Snic PDF Server t the default Jb Ticket and the Cnversin Limitatin which will be used fr cnverting files frm this watched flder in case n ther Jb Ticket has been prvided. Nte: Using the File Name Filter fr further infrmatin abut the Jb Tickets, see sectin 11. fr further infrmatin n advanced methds fr prviding Jb Ticket Files, see sectin 8. The Snic PDF Server allws yu t enable filters fr the names f the files within the mnitred flder. Exclude If this is un-checked and the File filter is checked, file list will be used as prcessing list (nly thse files will be prcessed). If this and the File Filter ptin are bth checked, the file list will be used t skip the crrespnding files. Add the ptin fr adding a new filter Remve the ptin fr remving a filter; select the desired filter and click Remve t delete it. It is allwed t use the wildcards in the filter (? and *). Page: 28 / 74

31 Snic PDF Server Clning the Watched Flder The Snic PDF Server allws yu t quickly create a new watched flder by clning an existing ne i.e. creating an exact cpy which yu can then further adjust t yur preference. This ptin is useful fr creating a variatin f an existing watched flder. In rder t clne a watched flder, chse an existing flder frm the list and click Clne in the bttm. 32 Snic PDF Server Deleting the Watched Flder In rder t delete a watched flder, select the desired flder frm the list and click Delete in the bttm. 33 Snic PDF Server Cllecting Files via The Snic PDF Server allws yu t cllect files via i.e. receive files which shuld be cnverted as an attachment sent by the users in an message. Apart frm the file which shuld be cnverted, the user can als send a jb ticket file with instructins n hw the cnversin shuld be perfrmed (further infrmatin available in sectin 8). 55 Snic PDF Server Advanced Methd fr Cllecting Files Except fr the simple methd described in previus sectins, there is als an advanced methd fr cllecting files. When using the simple methd fr clleting and prcessing files, users send a file which shuld be prcessed as an attachment. The message is sent t the previusly setup receiving address and a previusly specified jb ticket is applied. When using an advanced methd, instead f nly sending the file which shuld be prcessed, the users als send the jb ticket which cntains instructins n hw the attached file shuld be prcessed. The Snic PDF Server will autmatically detect the file which shuld be prcessed as well as the jb ticket and apply it t the attached file. Fr example: Yu have created an accunt (either POP3 r Exchange) and cnfigured the Snic PDF Server t cnvert Excel t PDF. Using an advanced methd, the users send bth Excel file and the jb ticket t this accunt. The Snic PDF Server will autmatically give pririty t the attached ticket instead f the default cnversin which had been previusly cnfigured. The cnverted file will be sent back t the sender. In rder t start setting up files which will be merged, click n the Merging tab (Jb Tickets -> Creatin Ticket -> New). The fllwing ptins are available in bth sectins: Add - click t add files which shuld be merged Nte: yu can uplad multiple files at nce by selecting mre than ne file. 72 Snic PDF Server Managing the Snic PDF Server Cnfiguratins The Snic PDF Servers stres all cnfiguratin settings int a file called PDFServer.cfg. Befre yu can start managing any f the prgram settings yu need t lad this cnfiguratin file first. By default there is nly ne cnfiguratin, called default, but the Snic PDF Server allws yu t create multiple cnfiguratins and use them as needed. Figure 76: Managing the Snic PDF Server Cnfiguratins (1/2) In the screensht abve, the cnfiguratin file PDFSever.cfg has been laded using the Open ptin frm the Cnfiguratin File. The tree structure n the left displays all available cnfiguratins, while the pull dwn menu n the right can be used t apply the desired cnfiguratin. Once yu select a cnfiguratin within the tree structure, further ptins fr that cnfiguratin will becme available. Delete click this buttn t delete the desired cnfiguratin Creating a Backup f the Main Cnfiguratin File In rder t create a backup f the main cnfiguratin file i.e. PDFServer.cfg, just save it under a different name using the Save As ptin in the Cnfiguratin File menu. Figure 80: Detailed jb infrmatin The fllwing infrmatin is available in bth categries: Status line - the first line within bth categries displays detailed infrmatin i.e. status abut each jb: Running the number f currently running jbs (nte: yu can cancel any currently running jb by right clicking the desired jb and chsing ptin Cancel; this jb will have the status Abrted). Waiting the number f jbs waiting fr prcessing. Successful the ttal number f successful jbs. Failed the ttal number f unsuccessful jbs. Individual jbs belw the status line, the Snic PDF Server lists all files which are waiting t be prcessed, currently running jbs as well as unsuccessful jbs; each line displays the name f the prcessed file as well as the status f the jb.
