Catalg descriptin: This curse begins with an intrductin t cmputer netwrks, including hardware, sftware, trubleshting, and maintenance. IT prfessinals need t understand varius cmpnents f the netwrking infrastructure f an rganizatin as well as the varius prtcls and standards used t implement these infrastructures. TCP/IP stack will be presented with the discussin f OSI layered mdel and data/cntrl flw thrugh each layer using tp-dwn r bttm-up appraches. Understanding f netwrking prtcls, TCP/IP stack, and trubleshting, and maintenance f netwrks will be given thrugh class lectures as well as labs. Three lecture hurs and three hurs f scheduled labratry per week. Prerequisites: ITE105, ITE201 Curse Narrative The emphasis f this curse is n the thrugh understanding f hw t netwrk cmputers using sftware and hardware tls. A cmputer netwrk is implemented as a multilayered structure (standard ISO OSI mdel and TCP/IP mdel), which extends frm a standalne cmputer t the Internet that cvers the whle glbe. Each layer is cmprised f hardware and sftware, each layer implements a set f cmmunicatin prtcls, and each layer presents a number f design and implementatin challenges that are taken care f by a set f mechanisms, tls, and rganizatinal methds. The curse uses a tp-dwn r bttm-up apprach, ging frm a standalne system t the Wrld Wide Web r frm the Wrld Wide Web dwn t physical layer, netwrking prtcls, and mechanisms fr each layer are described. Thrugh lecture and labs, students will be given a thrugh understanding f Lcal Area Netwrks and Wide Area Netwrks. Thrugh step-by-step understanding f each layer, they get t understand hw varius layers f the TCP/IP suite cme tgether in the frm f LANs, WANs, and the Internet. Gals: Upn successful cmpletin f the curse, a student shuld be able t d the fllwing: G1: identify basic issues, prblems, and slutins in designing and building cmputer netwrks taking int cnsideratin the cmputing envirnment as a whle; G2: describe all elements (sftware, hardware, rganizatinal structures) used in building cmputer netwrks; G3: use standards and prtcls required t analyze and design cmputer netwrks; G4: analyze cmpnents and rganizatinal methds used by netwrk administratrs t ensure functinality f a distributed envirnment (rbustness, thrughput, availability, reliability, etc.); G5: describe rules, regulatins, legal issues, and necessary administrative measures required t build a netwrked cmputing envirnment;

2 Curse Objectives: Upn successful cmpletin f the curse, a student will have demnstrated the ability t: O1: apply crrect technical terminlgy when analyzing requirements, describing the main issues, and designing slutins fr cmputer netwrks; O2: identify all necessary cmpnents f cmputer netwrks and distributed envirnments, explain methds and technlgies that are used in netwrk design and creatin, and demnstrate applicatin f these techniques in practical exercises; O3: analyze and apply assessment techniques that allw bjective evaluatin f the characteristics and vulnerabilities f a distributed cmputing envirnment, and t develp skills in using these techniques t design a practical slutin based n a custmer s requirements; O4: utilize knwledge and understanding f standards (systems and prtcls) used in creatin f netwrks when designing a netwrk; O5: analyze custmer s requirements and specificatins, frmulate specificatins fr a distributed envirnment (design blueprints, cmpnent specificatin, plicies and prcedures, etc.) and cmmunicate (verbally and in writing) clearly and cncisely these requirements t system managers, administratrs, business users, etc.; O6: wrk cllectively with stakehlders and ther members f the design team in analyzing requirements, discussing characteristics f a netwrked envirnment, analyzing issues, and designing and implementing slutins. Assignments: Hmewrk assignments include analysis f netwrk cmpnents and design f slutins fr netwrk and related tasks, as well as exercises in using netwrk tls. Assignments require students t use infrmatin given during the lectures and in textbks, and t perfrm Internet research fr necessary materials. Regular writing assignments include but are nt limited t: review f technical articles; presentatin f research findings; analysis and evaluatin f methdlgies used in building netwrked envirnments; Specific requirements fr each assignment will be stated when the assignment is distributed; all written submissins will be graded against the Writing rubric. Presentatins will be assessed based n the Presentatin rubric. 6 Quizzes, Tests and Examinatins: There will be fur quizzes (each cvering a majr tpic), a midterm, and a cumulative final. Quizzes and exams will include multiple chice and prblem slving tasks.
