Assumptins This dcument assumes the fllwing knwledge and envirnment: Yu have a passing knwledge f Oracle VM and f sme cre cncepts abut wrking with Xen hypervisr. Yu understand hw t install an perating system as a guest, and yu knw hw t cpy a virtual disk image between systems. Yu have a wrking knwledge f Linux and Oracle VM system administratin and can wrk in Linux and Oracle VM and edit files. Yu have a wrking knwledge f Oracle Clud Infrastructure, including tenancy, cmpartments, rles, users, netwrk and strage setup, images, and instances. Yu have prvisined (r knw hw t prvisin) bth an Oracle Clud Infrastructure Bare Metal Cmpute instance assigned t Oracle VM Server and ne Oracle Clud Infrastructure Virtual Machine instance assigned t Oracle VM Manager. If an Oracle VM clustered server pl is present, at least tw blck strage devices frm the Blck Strage service are presented t the Oracle VM Server instance, ne as an Oracle VM pl file system and ne as an Oracle VM repsitry. Yur Oracle VM Manager instance is n a public subnet (ne that has utbund access t the internet). Yur Oracle VM Manager instance relies n an internal subnet t manage and interact with Oracle VM Server instances. Oracle VM Server and Oracle VM Manager instances must be deplyed frm fficial Oracle images. Creating Oracle VM Server r Oracle VM Manager instances frm custm images r frm an existing Oracle Clud Infrastructure instance is nt supprted. The cre f cmmunicatin in the Oracle Clud Infrastructure envirnment is the virtual netwrk interface card (VNIC). The VNIC is a tuple that cnsists f a MAC address, a VLAN ID, and an IP address. Oracle Clud Infrastructure has the fllwing types f VNICs: A primary VNIC is created autmatically when the Oracle VM Server instance is created. This VNIC is the management interface used by Oracle VM Manager t manage the Oracle VM Server instance. Secndary VNICs are used fr Oracle VM virtual machine netwrks. The MAC/VLAN values are cnfigured in the Cavium card assciated with the Oracle VM Server instance t allw traffic t and frm an interface with these values. The VLAN ID is used t cnfigure a VLAN n eth0 fr the VM netwrk. The MAC address is used fr 11 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

the VM interface and is written t the VM cnfiguratin file, and the IP address can be used fr the VM interface. If yu are imprting a virtual machine image t run n Oracle VM, we assume that the image is cmpliant with the Open Virtualizatin Frmat (OVF). This dcument des nt cver hw t perfrm this cnversin. Fr infrmatin abut this cnversin and further ptins, see the Oracle VM 3.4 dcumentatin library. Knwn Limitatins and Requirements When Running Oracle VM n Oracle Clud Infrastructure Oracle VM architecture that is built with fficial Oracle VM 3.4 images n tp f Oracle Clud Infrastructure has the fllwing limitatins and requirements. Oracle VM Oracle VM Server and Oracle VM Manager instances have t be cnnected t subnets f the same Virtual Clud Netwrk (VCN). Oracle VM Server and Oracle VM Manager instances have t be cnfigured with the same time zne and same time surce (Oracle Clud Infrastructure NTP server). Oracle VM server pls can be clustered r nnclustered, but the fllwing best practices must be adhered t: Oracle VM clustered server pls can be based nly n Oracle Clud Infrastructure Blck Vlumes and can supprt bth Oracle Clud Infrastructure Blck Vlumes (valid fr all bare metal instance shapes) r NVMe strage (valid fr DenseIO shapes). Oracle VM nnclustered server pls can rely nly n NVMe lcal strage (valid fr DenseIO instance shapes). Intelligent Platfrm Management Interface (IPMI) is nt supprted. Creating clustered Oracle VM pls with mre than ne Oracle VM Server instance is nt supprted. Virtual machine live-migratin is nt supprted. Virtual machine cld-migratin is supprted with the steps available in this dcument. Nnclustered Oracle VM pls require at least ne NVMe strage device r ne Oracle Clud Infrastructure File Strage service file system t perate. Server pl plicies like Distributed Resurce Scheduler (DRS) and Distributed Pwer Management (DPM) are nt supprted. 12 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

Repsitry exprt functinality is restricted within the Oracle Clud Infrastructure envirnment because Oracle VM Server instances are cnfigured with nly private IP addresses. Oracle Applicatin Cluster n tp f Oracle VM deplyed n Oracle Clud Infrastructure is nt supprted. Because live-migratin is nt supprted, an Oracle VM Server upgrade requires all Oracle VM virtual machines t be shut dwn. The server is rebted as part f the upgrade. Oracle VM Server and Oracle VM Manager instances have t be in the same Oracle Clud Infrastructure regin. Oracle VM Server and Oracle VM Manager instances have t be in same Oracle Clud Infrastructure cmpartment. Oracle VM Server and Oracle VM Manager instances have t be in same Oracle Clud Infrastructure availability dmain. Oracle VM pls cannt be distributed n mre than ne Oracle Clud Infrastructure availability dmain. Clning an Oracle VM virtual machine with Oracle Clud Infrastructure VNICs des nt create new Oracle Clud Infrastructure VNICs fr the target virtual machine. Strage Using a strage type that is different frm the blck vlume, NVMe, r file system supplied by the Oracle Clud Infrastructure service is nt supprted. NFS strage is supprted fr Oracle VM strage repsitries when a File Strage service file system is being used. Using shared blck vlumes, if they are available, is nt supprted. Oracle Clud Infrastructure Blck Vlumes can be prvisined frm 50 GB t 32 TB, in 1- GB increments. File Strage file systems can be prvisined frm 100 GB t 32 TB, in 1GB increments. Leaving a file system r a munt target cnfigured as unlimited is nt supprted. Netwrk Oracle VM Manager instances must be cnfigured with a public IP address. Oracle VM Server instances must be cnfigured with a private IP address. A public IP address is nt supprted fr Oracle VM Server fr security reasns. 13 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

The number f Oracle Clud Infrastructure VNICs has the fllwing limits n bare metal instances: 36 fr BM.Standard1.36 and BM.DenseIO1.36 shapes 52 fr BM.Standard2.52 and BM.DenseIO1.52 shapes On Oracle VM Server instances, ne VNIC is used fr the primary interface and dedicated t Oracle VM Netwrk. Oracle Clud Infrastructure VNICs are cnfigured n the Oracle VM Server instance by using dedicated tls (vnic-add, vnic-delete, and vnic-list) that are available n the Oracle VM Manager instance. Intra-netwrk, als knwn as lcal bridge, VNICs must be created by Oracle VM Manager, just like n-premises Oracle VM lcal netwrks. Bnding and VLAN verbnded interface is nt supprted. The default MTU in the Oracle Clud Infrastructure envirnment is equal t In the OVS kickstart pst sectin, MTU=9000 is added t ifcfg-eth0. Gratuitus ARP is nt supprted in Oracle Clud Infrastructure envirnments. A VNIC hardware address cannt be migrated frm ne Oracle VM Server instance t anther. An Oracle Clud Infrastructure VNIC cannt be created cncurrently; ne VNIC creatin (vnic-add) at a time has t be executed. Prerequisites Befre yu can use Oracle VM, the fllwing prerequisites must be met: Using the Oracle Clud Infrastructure rt cmpartment is nt supprted. Yu must create at least ne dedicated cmpartment. Prvisin ne r mre bare metal instances by using an Oracle VM Server 3.4 ready-trun image. Yu can use the fllwing instance shapes fr Oracle VM Server instances: BM.Standard, used t create an Oracle VM clustered pl by means f an Oracle Clud Infrastructure Blck Vlumes device BM.DenseIO, used t create bth an Oracle VM nnclustered and clustered pl Only single-server Oracle VM clustered server pls are supprted at this time, t take advantage f Oracle Clud Infrastructure Blck Vlumes based strage repsitries. Fr multiple-server Oracle VM pls, use a server pl that is nt clustered. 14 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

Fr Oracle VM nnclustered pls, nly lcal NVMe-based strage and File Strage file systems can be used fr strage repsitries. Fr Oracle VM clustered pls, prvisin at least tw blck strage devices and attach them t the Oracle VM Server instance that yu prvisined. These blck strage devices are used fr the fllwing requirements: Oracle VM pl file system (minimum f 50 GB) Oracle VM repsitry (size based n VM requirements, minimum f 100 GB) Prvisin a virtual machine instance by using an Oracle VM Manager 3.4 ready-t-run image. Oracle VM Manager has t run n a minimum shape that grants at least fur OCPUs and 28 GB f RAM. Blck strage vlumes can be used as Oracle VM repsitries nly n Oracle VM clustered pls. Blck strage vlumes can be used as Oracle VM physical disks fr virtual machines n bth clustered and nnclustered Oracle VM pls. NFS File Strage service file systems can be used as Oracle VM repsitries n bth Oracle VM clustered and nnclustered pls. Lcal NVMe strage can be used as a lcal Oracle VM repsitry r directly presented t virtual machines by using Oracle VM Manager. MD RAID (Sftware RAID) is supprted fr NVMe disks. RAID devices built n NVMe can be used fr repsitries and virtual machine disks. We recmmend that yu prvisin blck strage devices fr Oracle VM repsitries that are larger than yur anticipated requirement sizes, s that yu have adequate space t stre the files required fr the virtual machines running n Oracle VM. Create a VCN with at least ne subnet fully cnfigured, including security lists, an internet gateway, and any apprpriate rute tables. Ensure that the security list can use SSH t cnnect t the Oracle VM Manager instance that can als be used as a bastin hst fr all Oracle VM Server instances. Details abut this prerequisite are available in the fllwing sectin. Nte abut Oracle VM Netwrk Bridging: Guests running n Oracle VM require a MAC address that is supplied by the Oracle Clud Infrastructure cnfiguratin management system. Because f this requirement, vnic-add and vnic-delete scripts are the nly supprted methd fr cnfiguring VNICs fr virtual machines running n Oracle VM Server. 15 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

Step 1: Prepare the Oracle Clud Infrastructure Envirnment Befre yu deply instances fr Oracle VM Manager and Oracle VM Server, a prper Oracle Clud Infrastructure setup is required. These IP addresses are nt specific t the vlume but are related t the number f iscsi blck vlumes attached t a particular instance and the rder in which they have been attached. S, a blck vlume attached t instance (A) might be assciated with IP address , but if that same blck vlume is detached frm instance (A) and attached t instance (B), it might be assciated with IP address Therefre, the actual IP address f the iscsi SAN server is hidden by Oracle Clud Infrastructure and can change each time the blck vlume is assciated with an instance, in this case, Oracle VM Server. Fr example, when attaching Oracle Clud Infrastructure blck vlumes t an Oracle Clud Infrastructure instance, the fllwing pattern f assignment has been bserved: The first blck vlume attached t instance (A) is assciated with IP address The secnd blck vlume attached t instance (A) is assciated with IP address The IP address increments fr each blck vlume assciated with instance (A). The first blck vlume attached t instance (B) is assciated with IP address , even if the same IP address is als used n the first blck vlume fr instance (A). The secnd blck vlume attached t instance (B) is assciated with IP address , even if the same IP address is als used n the secnd blck vlume fr instance (A). The IP address increments fr each blck vlume assciated with instance (B). After yu create a blck vlume in Oracle Clud Infrastructure and attach it t an Oracle VM Server instance, use the fllwing steps t cnfigure Oracle VM strage. Backup Optins fr Oracle VM n Oracle Clud Infrastructure This sectin discusses backup ptins fr Oracle VM Manager, Oracle VM Server, and Oracle VM virtual machines running in an Oracle Clud Infrastructure envirnment. Oracle VM Manager Althugh Oracle VM Manager is used fr day-t-day mnitring and management f the envirnment, it is nt critical t the successful cntinuance f yur Oracle VM envirnment (mdel) in the event f disaster r the lss f the instance where Oracle VM Manager is installed. The Oracle VM Server instances and virtual machines will cntinue t functin fr shrt r extended perids f time during the temprary lss f Oracle VM Manager. Hwever, because the Oracle VM Manager instance acts as an internet gateway fr all the Oracle VM Server instances managed, withut it the Oracle VM Server instances can t execute peratins that actively wrk with external resurces (fr example, YUM repsitries). The Oracle VM Manager database shuld be backed up daily, r even mre frequently if many changes are being made. The Oracle VM Manager database is the nly data stre in which all f the infrmatin abut every aspect f the mdel is maintained. In particular, simple names and descriptins f physical and virtual disks, elements f the netwrk infrastructure, Oracle VM 96 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

Servers, and guests are maintained nly in the Oracle VM Manager database. In additin, infrmatin abut the strage arrays, access grups, and ther relatinships between bjects is maintained nly there. Critical Oracle VM Manager Files and Directries Oracle VM Manager is built n tp f Oracle WebLgic Server. Almst everything abut the prduct is cntained in a single directry with a few exceptins. Oracle VM Manager applicatin: Everything abut Oracle VM Manager, including the WebLgic binaries, JAR files, WAR files, and scripts, is cntained within the /u01 directry structure. The nly pieces f Oracle VM Manager that are cntained utside f /u01 are the Oracle VM Manager cnfiguratin file and the MySQL Enterprise Backup prduct. Oracle VM Manager data files: All data related t the Oracle VM mdel is cntained in the /u01 directry structure. The specific lcatin f the data files is /u01/app/racle/mysql/data. Oracle VM Manager cnfiguratin file fr database: The /u01/app/racle/vmmanager-3/.cnfig file is created during the installatin prcess by runinstaller.sh and cntains key infrmatin abut accessing the database and the cre prduct being managed by the WebLgic server. This file is remved when yu uninstall Oracle VM Manager. Oracle VM Manager cnfiguratin file fr backups: The /etc/syscnfig/vmm file is created by the initial installatin. It cntains persistent infrmatin abut the Oracle VM Manager UUID and infrmatin required by the MySQL Enterprise Backup t perfrm the daily autmated backup f the Oracle VM database when MySQL is used. This file remains in place if yu uninstall Oracle VM Manager. It is used by the installatin script if yu reinstall Oracle VM Manager t ensure that the prduct is reinstalled using the UUID frm a previus installatin. Critical Oracle VM Autmated Backup Files and Directries Oracle VM Manager perfrms daily full autmated ht backups f the Oracle VM database by using the MySQL Enterprise Backup applicatin, which is included in the Oracle VM Manager installatin. The autmated backups are rtated daily and have a retentin perid f 15 days. Fr the latest infrmatin abut autmated backups fr Oracle VM, see the Oracle VM 3 Installatin and Upgrade Guide. MySQL backup data: The default lcatin fr each backup n the Oracle VM management server is /u01/app/racle/mysql/dbbackup. Each daily backup is cmpletely self-cntained under.../dbbackup/autfullbackup-<date>-<time>. 97 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

The daily backups are the key t a successful recvery and are the nly data that shuld be backed up and saved t a secure lcatin. Everything else abut the Oracle VM Manager can be reinstalled easily frm scratch, but the data cntained in the individual backups is critical fr a full and painless recvery. Each backup includes all f the data and transactin lgs needed t accmplish a full restre. MySQL backup prduct: The autmated daily backups are accmplished using MySQL Enterprise Backup, which resides in /pt/mysql/meb*. OCI Blck Vlume and Oracle VM Manager Backup Lcatin Everything in the /u01 directry is deleted when yu uninstall Oracle VM Manager. Changing the lcatin fr the backup directry prtects the daily backups frm being inadvertently deleted if Oracle VM Manager is uninstalled and then reinstalled. T change the default lcatin fr the autmated backups, edit the /etc/syscnfig/vmm file and change DBBACKUP=/u01/app/racle/mysql/dbbackup t use a new path that pints t a new Oracle Clud Infrastructure blck vlume attached t the Oracle VM Manager instance. Oracle recmmends that MySQL Enterprise Backup write all backups t anther strage device, munted t the default backup directry specified in the /etc/syscnfig/vmm file. If yu decide t use such a slutin, then the file system shuld be sized t accmmdate a rtatin f 15 daily backups, plus sme space fr additinal grwth and peridic, ad hc backups. Fr mre infrmatin abut backup ptins fr Oracle VM Manager, see the Oracle VM 3: Backup and Recvery Best Practices Guide white paper. Oracle VM Server An Oracle VM Server instance is cmpsed f the Xen hypervisr and privileged dmain (Dm0) that is installed n physical, bare metal instances. The server instances cnstitute the entire runtime platfrm fr Oracle VM guests and prvide prcessing pwer and ther resurces such as memry, access t netwrks, access t strage, and cluster capabilities fr high availability f Oracle VM guests. Oracle VM Server instances that belng t nnclustered server pls using lcal disk must be backed up because all critical data abut the Oracle VM guests resides n lcal disk as ppsed t shared strage. Oracle VM Server instances that belng t clustered and nnclustered server pls using shared disk shuld als be backed up. Fr mre infrmatin abut backup ptins fr Oracle VM Server, see the Oracle VM 3: Backup and Recvery Best Practices Guide white paper. 98 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

Oracle VM Virtual Machines Oracle VM guests are virtual machines that hst the guest perating systems, databases, and applicatins that make up varius business systems within yur Oracle VM envirnment. All the main parts f each Oracle VM virtual machine are part f the strage repsitries. This distinctin is imprtant because althugh the virtual machines run in Oracle VM Server instances, all the cnfiguratin files and virtual disks fr each Oracle VM guest reside in the strage repsitry. Backups and recveries f Oracle VM guests can be cmplex because any pssible Oracle Clud Infrastructure blck vlumes directly assciated with guest perating systems are artifacts f the Oracle VM Server instances and are nt part f the strage repsitries. In additin, yur deplyment architecture might include applicatins and data files that are presented t guest perating systems frm NFS exprts being served frm many different NFS servers instead f residing n virtual disks within strage repsitries. Fr mre infrmatin, see the Oracle VM 3: Backup and Recvery Best Practices Guide white paper. Maintenance and Upgrade f Oracle VM n Oracle Clud Infrastructure Oracle VM images fr Oracle Clud Infrastructure will be maintained as Oracle already maintains standard sftware releases. That said, the upgrade f existing Oracle VM instances can be managed by using the fllwing guidelines. Upgrade Oracle VM Manager Oracle VM Manager is installed n tp f an Oracle Linux 7 instance. This instance can be managed, upgraded, and maintained by fllwing best practices fr Oracle Linux. Fr details, see Getting Started: Oracle Linux fr Oracle Clud Infrastructure. 100 3. Munt the Oracle VM Manager ISO file by a lp device: # sud munt - lp <is_file> /mnt 4. As rt, start the Oracle VM Manager upgrade script (runinstaller.sh) and fllw the upgrade wizard by selecting the 2: Upgrade ptin. Oracle VM Server Oracle VM Server instance upgrades and maintenance can be f tw different types: Majr/minr release upgrade. Fr example, upgrade frm Oracle VM Server t Oracle VM Server Server maintenance because f bugs, security hles, and enhancements. 100 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

Fr majr/minr release upgrades, the upgrade prcess must be managed by fllwing the instructins in the Oracle VM Installatin and Upgrade Guide fr Release 3.4. 103 T upgrade f ne Oracle VM Server instance, perfrm the fllwing steps in the Oracle VM Manager user interface: 1. Click the Servers and VMs tab, expand Server Pls in the left-side pane, and click the Oracle VM Server instance that yu want t upgrade (fr example, srv01). 2. Frm the Perspective menu, select Virtual Machines and verify that n virtual machines are running n this server. 3. In the left-side pane, right-click n the server instance and select Update frm the menu. 4. In the Cnfirmatin dialg bx, click OK t cnfirm that yu want t install all the updates available fr the server instance. An Oracle VM Manager jb starts. 103 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

Wait fr the upgrade prcess t cmplete befre prceeding with ther Oracle VM Server update prcesses. The upgrade prcedure is available n Oracle VM Installatin and Upgrade Guide fr Release 3.4. Trubleshting This sectin describes hw t reslve sme cmmn issues that yu might encunter when running Oracle VM n Oracle Clud Infrastructure. Oracle VM Manager Service Must Be Reinstalled Oracle VM Manager identifies itself by ne unique ID (UUID), and this ID is required t reinstall Oracle VM Manager. The Oracle VM Manager installatin prcess evaluates whether the /etc/syscnfig/vmm cnfiguratin file with sftware definitins is available. The slutin described here uses this file t prperly reinstall Oracle VM Manager by using the riginal UUID. The fllwing image shws an example f the /etc/syscnfig/vmm file: T reinstall Oracle VM Manager n an existing Oracle Clud Infrastructure instance, perfrm the fllwing steps: 1. As the pc user, back up the existing Oracle VM Manager syscnfig cnfiguratin file: # sud cp /etc/syscnfig/vmm /hme/pc/vmm.riginal 104 INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ORACLE VM ON ORACLE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

2. As the pc user, uninstall the existing Oracle VM Manager service: # sud munt - lp /hme/pc/vmm installer-oraclelinux-b1722.is /mnt (refer t the prper Oracle VM Manager ISO) # sud /mnt/runinstaller.sh -i Uninstall 3. Cnfirm with 1 t prceed with the Oracle VM Manager sftware uninstallatin. 4. After the uninstallatin prcess is cmplete, unmunt the Oracle VM Manager sftware ISO: # sud umunt /mnt 5.
