1 REV MESSAGE fr UNIX/LINUX PURPOSE This dcument is a step by step guide fr installing REV MESSAGE sftware frm the Internet n t a UNIX/LINUX Operating System. CONTENTS 1. WHAT YOU NEED 2. T use the build-in SNMP Alerts handler Yu ll need t have the SNMP Agent/Handler installed and running (e.g. Net-SNMP etc ). In the SNMP cnfiguratin, add the trap hander t rmsnmptrap. Fr example: In Net-SNMP s snmptrapd.cnfig file, add traphandle default <full_path>/rmsnmptrap. Cnfigure SNMP devices t reprt t the trap prcess. DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE G t n the Internet. Select Dwnlads n the tp navigatin bar. Select REV MESSAGE in the list. Select the Server Sftware fr yur UNIX/LINUX platfrm. Enter yur Username and Passwrd. If yu d nt have ne, select Register t request ne frm us. 1

2 Save the dwnlad file t yur machine. QUICK START lgin as super user / rt check MySQL 5.1 is installed and running check SSH is installed and running create a user 'revsft' (with passwrd) in /etc/passwd (with hme directry as '/revsft') adduser revsft -d /revsft -s /bin/bash unpack the install file: gunzip RevSft-Message-Engine-ENTXXX-XXX.tar.gz tar xvf RevSft-Message-Engine-ENTXXX-XXX.tar run the checklist:./rminstall checklist install the prduct:./rminstall nw lgin as user 'revsft' start REV MESSAGE cd /revsft/message/engine./rjengine start INSTALLATION Lgin as super user / rt Add a new user revsft t the lcal passwrd file using: adduser revsft -d /revsft -s /bin/bash Create a new flder using this cmmand: mkdir /revsft Create a temprary flder using this cmmand: mkdir /revsft/temp Cpy r mve the dwnladed file t the temprary flder: cp RevSft-Message-Engine-ENTXXX-XXX.tar.gz /revsft/temp Change directry t the temprary flder: cd /revsft/temp T unpack the dwnlad file use the fllwing cmmands: gunzip RevSft-Message-Engine-ENTXXX-XXX.tar.gz tar xvf RevSft-Message-Engine-ENTXXX-XXX.tar This will create the fllwing 4 new files: README.txt rminstall rmuninstall RevSft-Message-Engine-ENTXXX-XXX -files.tar 2

3 Nw run the fllwing cmmand:./rminstall checklist The utput is: Perfrming REV MESSAGE check list: * checking fr hstname...k * checking fr tar file package...k * checking install user is rt...k * checking fr user 'revsft' in the passwd file...k * checking fr MySQL...k * checking if we can cnnect t MySQL...k * checking fr /etc/syslg.cnf...k Check list status is: passed If the check list status is 'passed' use the fllwing cmmand t install:./rminstall nw If the check list status is 'failed', refer t the INSTALL CHECKLIST belw... WHAT DOES THE INSTALL DO? The install will: * create a new flder /revsft/message * create a new flder /revsft/message/engine * create a new flder /revsft/message/engine/lgs * create a new flder /revsft/message/lgs * install REV MESSAGE prgrams in /revsft/message/engine * install REV MESSAGE lg files in /revsft/message/lgs * append REV MESSAGE cnfiguratin infrmatin t /etc/syslg.cnf r /etc/syslg-ng/syslg-ng.cnf * add a MySQL database with the name REVMSG * add a MySQL user revsft with access rights t the REVMSG database * add a new system file /usr/lib/librevgcc.a (fr AIX systems nly) WHAT DOES THE UNINSTALL DO? The uninstall will: * delete all files and flders under /revsft/message * drp the MySQL database REVMSG The uninstall des NOT: * delete the MySQL user revsft * remve the system file /usr/lib/librevgcc.a (n AIX systems nly) This is because ther RevSft prducts may be installed n yur system. 3

4 STARTING THE ENGINE T start REV MESSAGE use the fllwing cmmand: rmengine start T check the engine status use: rmengine status T stp the engine use: rmengine stp T restart the engine use: rmengine restart T allw the engine t be stpped r restarted frm a remte machine perfrm these cmmands nly as user 'revsft'. INSTALL CHECKLIST Here is further infrmatin n each checklist item: * checking fr hstname...k If this fails, set the envirnment variable HOSTNAME t the name f yur machine... e.g.: If yu are using burne (sh r bash) shell use the cmmand: exprt HOSTNAME=myhstname If yu are using the C-Shell (csh) use the cmmand: setenv HOSTNAME myhstname * checking fr tar file package...k Check that the unpacked tar file RevSft-Message-Engine-ENTXXX-XXX-files.tar exists in the crrect directry * checking install user is rt...k Yu need t be lgged in as user 'rt' * checking fr user 'revsft' in the passwd file...k Yu need t add a new user, 'revsft' t the lcal passwd file, make the hme directry=/revsft. 4

5 * checking fr MySQL...k MySQL 5.1 is required t run RevSft prducts. T start MySQL, yu use this cmmand: mysqld_safe --user=mysql & T check the versin, use this cmmand: mysql -V This cmmand shuld utput smething like this: mysql Ver 14.7 Distrib , fr pc-linux-gnu (i686) using readline 4.3 The Distrib 5.1.XX is the imprtant part. If yu d nt see 5.1 yu need t dwnlad and install MySQL 5.1 fr yur system. Refer t fr further infrmatin. * checking if we can cnnect t MySQL...k MySQL shuld be started s we attempt t cnnect t MySQL T start MySQL yu use this cmmand: mysqld_safe --user=mysql & * checking fr /etc/syslg.cnf...k REV MESSAGE wrks with syslg and syslg-ng (next generatin) Therefre, ne f these cnfiguratin files shuld exist: /etc/syslg.cnf /etc/syslg-ng/syslg-ng.cnf T check fr these files, use the fllwing cmmands: ls /etc/syslg.cnf ls /etc/syslg-ng/syslg-ng.cnf UNINSTALL If bth f these files d nt exist, yu d nt have syslg n yur system! T uninstall run the fllwing cmmand: cd /revsft/message/engine./rmuninstall checklist If the check list status is 'passed' use the fllwing cmmand t uninstall: 5
