(Lab is 18 pts. and Prelab is 16 pts.) 1 Gal The student will further develp cncepts learned in the mdules by reading and writing data n a tag and experimenting with tag rientatin. 2 Assessment A student shuld: Be able t read and write data n a tag Knw that tag rientatin affects read range 3 Equipment Reader with antenna, preferable a linear plarized antenna such as a patch antenna Antenna stand Tag stand Several tags PC t cmmunicate with reader 4 Sftware Reader sftware 5 Prelab 5.1 Preparatin Read the TagSense Help File fr the reader available at the class website. We will use the TagSense Studi sftware. Review the TagSense dcumentatin fr the reader available at the class website. 2 Page 2 f 6 6 Experiments 6.1 Experiment 1: Reading/Writing a Tag Cnfiguratin Place a tag near the antenna f the reader and start the prgram that cntrls the reader. When using the TagSense Studi sftware, it is best t click n plling instead f using the default cntinuus mde that keeps reading tags. Click n pll when reading a new tag Exercise Read and recrd the EPC and TID mdel numbers f tw tags. (1 pt. each) EPC1 in hex: TID1 in hex: EPC2 in hex: TID2 in hex: Rewrite/Change a tag s EPC number. Recrd the EPC number belw and shw ne f the instructrs. (1 pt.) EPC in hex: Determine and recrd the default Q value f the reader. (1 pt.) Determine the reader sessin that is being used by the reader. (1 pt.) 6.2 Experiment 2: Tag rientatin Exercise Use a tag that is easy t determine the antenna plarizatin. A tag that is lng and thin will tend t have a mre vertically plarized signal when the tag is riented s that the lnger measurement is up and dwn. Determine the best tag rientatin fr the maximum read range. Describe it. Is the antenna pattern vertical r hrizntal? (2 pts.) Determine the best tag rientatin fr the minimum read range. Describe it. Is the antenna pattern vertical r hrizntal? (2 pts.)

3 Page 3 f Experiment 3: Access and Kill Passwrds Exercise Find a tag in which yu can read bth the access and kill passwrds. The tag shuld be labeled readable passwrd r equivalent. An access r kill passwrd f all zers means n passwrd is set. (1 pt. each) Write dwn the EPC f the tag. Write dwn the access passwrd. Hw many bits is the access passwrd? Write dwn the kill passwrd. Hw many bits is the kill passwrd? Des it seem strange that yu can read the passwrds? Nw, find a tag in which yu cannt read the access passwrd. The tag shuld be labeled passwrd prtected r equivalent. This tag had the access passwrd lcked r permalcked s that yu cannt read the memry lcatin where the access passwrd is stred withut a passwrd. Yu will have t guess the passwrd and enter it int the sftware. The first seven digits f the passwrd are zer s that yu can have a chance f guessing the passwrd. Put the passwrd in the Tag Selectin bx f the TagSense Studi sftware. (1 pt. each) Write dwn the EPC f the tag. Write dwn the access passwrd.
