2 1: Intrductin The SuperMAX+ is a very pwerful d-it-yurself ptin that prvides increased memry and greater cntrl f the DX7. While the installatin is fairly simple, it still requires patience and general electrnics knwledge. We accept n respnsibility fr the wrk yu perfrm n yur DX7. Read ver the fllwing installatin descriptin and if yu feel yu are nt capable f the wrk required, turn the prject ver t a qualified technician. All Lithium battery repairs must be dne by a qualified technician due t the explsive nature f the CR2032 battery. Precautins! High Vltage Safety Warning Turn the DX7 pwer switch OFF and discnnect the AC pwer cable befre pening the DX7. ESD Precautins and Prper Handling Prcedures Yu shuld bserve standard static-safe handling behavir when wrking with sensitive electrnic equipment such as synthesizers: Avid carpets in cl, dry areas. Dissipate static electricity befre handling any system cmpnents by tuching a grunded metal bject. If pssible, use anti-static devices, such as wrist straps and flr mats. Take care when installing the bard. A damaged pin can render the bard unusable. Prevent damage t the cnnectrs by aligning cnnectr pins befre yu apply pressure. A damaged pin can render the bard unusable and can cause damage t system cmpnents at pwer-n. If discnnecting a cable, always pull n the cable cnnectr, nt n the cable itself. Tls Required (SuperMAX installatin NOT including battery hlder) Standard flat-head screwdriver (small). Standard Philips screwdriver. Cnditin f DX7 While the SuperMAX+ will replace the functinality f damaged r missing EPROM and/r SRAM chips, it will nt crrect ther prblems yur vintage synthesizer may have. It is recmmended that the synth be in therwise gd cnditin befre beginning the installatin. Fr instance, the battery vltage shuld be checked and the battery replaced/repaired by a tech if necessary. Sckets fr the EPROM and SRAM chips shuld be in gd wrking rder and nt be dirty, xidized, rusted r therwise cmprmised. If repair is required, d it befre installing SuperMAX+. 3 2: Installatin Back up yur patches if they are imprtant t yu! Open the DX7 Using a Philips head screwdriver, remve the 5 screws frm the frnt panel. Tw are lcated n the left frnt. Tw are lcated n the right frnt. A final ne is lcated n the right rear. Set the screws aside, nting that the rear panel ne is the shrtest. (Re)Mve the Keybed & Remve the Keybard Rail It can be difficult t see the delicate pins when installing the SuperMAX+ bard. By mving the keybed (the chassis with the keys) and remving the silver keybard rail, yu will have better sight lines and freedm f mvement when installing the SuperMAX+ bard. Remve the 4 large external screws frm the underside f the keybard alng the frnt edge. The pht belw shws the inside frnt edge f the empty case bttm. The pht illustrates the lcatin f the 4 screws. Yu will, f curse, be unscrewing frm the underside. Lsen the 3 internal screws at the extreme right and left ends that hld the keybed in place. It is nt necessary t extract them frm the hles they reside in. DX7 SuperMAX+ Page 3 f 7 Install

4 Carefully lift the keybed slightly up and ut (tward yurself) an inch r s.. Yu dn't need t mve it much. Yu will prbably need t free up ne r mre cables t accmplish it. Or if yu prefer, discnnect the cables and cmpletely remve the keybed. This will give yu access t the 3 screws hlding the silver keybard rail in place. Remve thse three screws and set aside the silver keybard rail. (Shwn here with keybed remved). Yu nw have excellent access t the DX7 main bard. If yu d remve the keybed yu may find it easier t remve the small yellw cable and large flat grayish cable at the main-bard-end rather than frm the keybed. Yu will als need t unclip tw small cables n the left end. There may als be wire tires and/r cable fasteners t deal with. DX7 SuperMAX+ Page 4 f 7 Install

5 Remve the EPROM and SRAM ICs The next step is t remve the EPROM and tw SRAM ICs. The EPROM is fund in lcatin IC14 and the tw M5M5118P SRAM chips are lcated at IC21 1 and IC20. Remve them by prying slwly at each end f the chip back-and-frth with a small flat-head screwdriver. Avid tuching any f the metal pins with the screwdriver. Place them safely aside n anti-static fam. Yu can use the reverse side f the fam shipped with the SuperMAX+. The pht abve shws the 3 chips in place. The pht belw shws them remved. After remving the chips, als remve the screw shwn at the center f these phts near IC23. 1 Sme mdels f DX7 use different IC numbering schemes. Refer t the phtgraphs if in dubt. 6 Install the SuperMAX+ Bard Hand tighten the supplied nyln standff int the screw psitin near IC23. Tighten it well by hand, but there is generally n need t use a tl. D nt ver tighten r strip the threads. Next, CAREFULLY remve the SuperMAX+ bard frm it's antistatic packaging. Inspect the bttm f the bard t make sure nne f the pins have been damaged. Yu shuld see ne cllectin f 28 pins (2 parallel strips f 14 pins), ne cllectin f 24 pins (2 parallel strips f 12 pins) and a strip f 8 pins. Place the SuperMAX+ bard gently n the DX7 main bard s that the 28 pins that frm a DIP package align with the vacated IC14 spt. The 8 pins alng the edge shuld align with IC20. D nt press the bard in place yet. Yu can use a small mirrr t check the pin alignment. Once yu are happy that all the pins are aligning with the desired lcatins, firmly and evenly press the SuperMAX+ bard in place. Make a visual check t see that the bard is flush with the sckets. 7 Using a screwdriver, carefully tighten the riginal main bard screw thrugh the SuperMAX+ bard int the nyln standff. Again d nt frce it r ver tighten as this can nt nly strip the standff, but it can cause the SuperMAX+ bard t change psitin. It shuld be tight enugh s that it cannt wrk lse. Duble check the pins. Reassembly Carefully reassemble the DX7 in the reverse rder, taking care t replace the crrect screws in the varius lcatins. If yu discnnected the green keybed grund strap wire dn't frget t screw it back in. When yu reinstall the silver metal keybard rail, make sure it des nt cntact any SuperMAX+ cmpnents r pins. The silver metal rail shuld just clear the SuperMAX+ when the rail is tightened in place. The silicn r ht glue seen n the SuperMAX+ bard helps keep the bard and rail apart smewhat, but check with a mirrr and flashlight t be sure. Test The first time yu pwer the DX7 n (and any time yu change the battery) yu will ntice abut a 5 secnd delay befre the LCD shws it's initial message. Tense mments indeed. Eventually yu shuld get the message like: * Welcme t * * SuperMAX+! * The 2 banks f "factry" patches sunds have been cpied t all 16 patch memry banks. Please read the wners manual befre relading yur wn patches. Yu can d a quick versin check f the bard by pressing and hlding the frnt Functin buttn and als pressing and hlding buttns 16 and 32. Yu shuld see smething like the fllwing: MAXsystems v2.10 Cnsult the nline "Yamaha DX7 SuperMAX+ User Guide" fr mre infrmatin n using yur upgraded DX7. Prblems? Almst all installatin prblems are due t pr bard seating r cnnectins. Remve the bard, check all the pins fr debris, cntaminatin, bending, etc. Then reinstall. Battery Hlder Optin A battery hlder is supplied in case yu wuld like t have yur sldered-in battery remved and replaced with a CR2032 cin cell. These lithium batteries are extremely sensitive t heat and shrting and can explde! This peratin shuld be left in the hands f a qualified technician. The tech will remve the ld battery and run wires frm the ld battery lcatin t the new ne, making careful nte f crrect plarity. It is nt unusual, hwever, t encunter defective dides and/r pen traces.
