Describe hw students frm all ppulatins (day students n campus, DL, MM, evening, extensin center sites, etc.) were included in the assessment based n yur selectin criteria. A ttal f six ( 6) sectins f ANT20 1 were evaluated. Fur ( 4) f these sectins (sectins 1,2,3,5) were traditinal day sectins. An evening sectin (sectin 4) and a 12-week sectin (sectin Y1) were als included. 5. Describe the prcess used t assess this utcme. Include a brief descriptin f this tl and hw it was scred. The assessment was administered in tw parts and was identical in all six sectins. The assessment exam was ffered as extra credit fr Instructr 1's sectins and as part f the final exam fr the sectins taught by Instructr 2. The first part f the exam cnsisted f 25 multiple chice questins; bth questins and answers were develped by Instructrs 1 & 2. The secnd part f the exam was an essay that asked students t explain the central tenet f cultural relativisim, its value t anthrplgy, and an explanatin f the mral and/r ethical cnflicts that might arise during fieldwrk. The multiple chice sectin f the exam was scred using a grading key n a scale f 1-25 pints. Instructrs graded the essays frm each thers' sectins n a scale f 1-5 pints; 2 pints fr the first sectin f the essay, 1 fr the secnd part f the essay, and 2 fr the third part fthe essay. The verall percentage fr each sectin was calculated by the sum f the average percentage multiple chice scre and the average percentage essay scre divided by tw. 6. Briefly describe assessment results based n data cllected fr this utcme and tl during the curse assessment. Discuss the extent t which students achieved this learning utcme and indicate whether the standard f success was met fr this utcme and tl. Overall percentages ( = MC% + EssayO//2) fr the six (6) sectins ranged frm 71.7% t 82.1 %; the average verall percentage scre fr all six sectins f ANT201 was 78.2% (the averages by instructr were 76.5% fr Instructr 1 and 80% fr Instructr 2). The scre f an verall average f75% n the assessment exam was met in all but ne sectin and in that case it was nl 3.5% belw the

Based upn the results f the multiple chice exam questins, students were generally gd at identifying cncepts and classifying different frms f scicultural prductin, rganizatin, and idelgy. The majrity f students were als able t explain, in a brad sense, the imprtance f cultural relativsim t the study f culture. Students were als able t identify relevant examples t illustrate these cncepts. 8. Based n yur analysis f student perfrmance, discuss the areas in which student achievement f this learning utcme culd be imprved. If student met standard f success, yu may wish t identify yur plans fr cntinuus imprvement. Based n the results f the multiple chice exam questins, students were less prficient at recgnizing theretical perspectives in anthrplgy. Three questins n the exam in particular (questins #7, # 19 and #25) fcused n three theretical perspectives (demgraphic transitins, linguistic deep structures, and materialism). The cmbined errr rate n these questins was between 71% and 85% and suggests that while the majrity f students can identify names, places and cncepts that are imprtant t the study f culture, many d nt understand the theretical basis f cnclusins in Anthrplgy. When asked t articulate what the "value" f cultural relativsim was t the study f culture in the essay sectin f the exam, many cnfused this cncept with participant bservatin r culd nt prvide a relevant example frm a culture discussed in class t illustrate their pint. There appears t be at least sme cnfusin regarding the difference between thery and methd. II. Curse Summary and Actin Plans Based n Assessment Results 1. Describe yur verall impressin fhw this curse is meeting the needs f students. Did the assessment prcess bring t light anything abut student achievement fleaming utcmes that surprised yu? There are a number f needs that ANT201 currently fulfills: the necessity f ur students t apprach cultural diversity in an bjective and relativisitic fashin, t understand the basis f these cultural differences frm an analytical perspective, and t understand the applicatin f scientific thinking t areas f knwledge that are ften depicted as purely histrical in nature. The assessment shws that the majrity f ur students are cmpleting ANT20 1 with at least a rudimentary understanding f cncepts and research perspectives imprtant t anthrplgy, as well as sme sense f the relativistic nature f culture in general.

The ANT201 curse assessment will be shared with the Department f Scial Sciences Chairpersn and with all instructrs assigned t teach ANT Intended Change(s) Descriptin f the Intended Change change N changes intended. Ratinale Implementatin ~ate 4. Is there anything that yu wuld like t mentin that was nt already captured? It shuld be nted that the assessment exam was apprached by students very differently fr the tw instructrs wh prvided data fr this reprt. Multiple chice exams were nt part f the curriculum fr the sectins f ANT20 1 taught by C. Barrett; instead, the assessment exam was fferred as an extra credit assignment during the last week f the semester. When asked, nly abut 1 in 5 (20%) f students in these sectins reprted that they had dne any preparatin fr the assessment exam and many admitted t nt taking the essay exam seriusly. Cnversely, assessment exam questins in sectins taught by David Mackres were part f a final exam. It is likely that the significant differences in the assessment exam utcmes between the tw instructrs may reflect these differences in student attitude tward the assessment itself. III.
