7 Intrductin Prduct Overview The WLAN17202ER is designed t prvide wireless cmmunicatin fr PC/104-Plus and PCI-104 based systems. It cmmunicates via the standard a/b/g prtcls. The WLAN17202ER can be used t cnnect multiple PC systems tgether. The WLAN17202ER uses the 5004 MP Athers 4G Mini-PCI mdule frm Netgate. This mdule is cnnected t the PC/104 PCI bus thrugh a Mini-PCI cnnectr and special circuitry t allw fr cmpatibility with either 3.3V r 5V PCI signaling. IT IS INCUMBENT ON THE USER TO OBTAIN ANY CERTIFICATIONS WHICH MAY BE REQUIRED FOR OPERATION WHEN INTEGRATED INTO ITS FINAL APPLICATION. The signals frm this bus are nt used n this mdule. The cnnectr serves as a pass-thrugh t ther PC/104 and PC/104-Plus mdules. Cnnectr CN3 - PC/104 PCI Bus Cnnectr CN3 carries the signals f the PC/104-Plus PCI bus. These signals match definitins f the PCI Lcal Bus specificatin Revisin 2.2. 12 PCI Bus Signal Descriptin Address and Data AD[31:00] Address and Data are multiplexed n the same PCI pins. A bus transactin cnsists f an address phase fllwed by ne r mre data phases. C/BE[3:0]# Bus Cmmand/Byte Enables are multiplexed. During the address phase f a transactin, they define the bus cmmand. During the data phase, they are used as byte enables. PAR Parity is even parity acrss AD[31:00] and C/BE[3:0]#. Parity generatin is required by all PCI signals. Interface Cntrl Pins FRAME# Cycle Frame is driven by the current master t indicate the beginning f an access and will remain active until the final data cycle. TRDY# Target Ready indicates the selected device s ability t cmplete the current data phase f the transactin. Bth IRDY# and TRDY# must be asserted t terminate a data cycle. IRDY# Initiatr Ready indicates the bus master's ability t cmplete the current data phase f the transactin. STOP# Stp indicates the current selected device is requesting the master t stp the current transactin. DEVSEL# Device Select, when actively driven, indicates the driving device has decded its address as the target f the current access. IDSEL Initializatin Device Select is used as a chip-select during cnfiguratin read and write transactins. LOCK# Lck indicates an atmic peratin t a bridge that may require multiple transactins t cmplete. Errr Reprting PERR# Parity Errr is fr reprting data parity errrs. SERR# System Errr is fr reprting address parity errrs. Arbitratin (Bus Masters Only) REQ# Request indicates t the arbitratr that this device desires use f the bus. GNT# Grant indicates t the requesting device that access has been granted. System CLK Clck prvides timing fr all transactins n the PCI bus and is an input t every RST# PCI device. Reset is used t bring PCI-specific registers, sequencers, and signals t a cnsistent state. M66EN 66 MHz Enable indicates t a device whether the bus segment is perating at 33 MHz r 66 MHz. The PCI bus has been simulated at 33MHz. Fr the purpse f this specificatin, 66MHz is nt supprted. T supprt future enhancements, the M66EN signal shuld be grunded n any mdule that cannt supprt 66MHz and left pen fr mdules that can supprt a 66MHz clck. 13 Cnnectrs J3 and J4 WLAN Antenna Cnnectrs WLAN17202ER is capable f hardware antenna diversity if external antennas are cnnected t bth f the n-bard Main and Auxiliary antenna cnnectrs. These cnnectrs are f the MCX/OSX type. External WLAN antennas are available as part f the SK-WLAN17202ER starter kit. Nte: The WLAN17202ER will autmatically use whichever antenna has the greatest signal strength. If nly ne antenna is attached, that ne will always be used. PCI Cnfiguratin Optins T install the WLAN17202ER int the stack, the PCI Slt Number must be cnfigured crrectly. This is dne by the rtary switch SW1. There are fur pssible PCI Slt Numbers (0 3). Each PCI device (PC/104-Plus r PCI-104) must a use a different slt number. The slt number is related t the psitin f the bard in the stack. Slt 0 represents the PCI device clsest t the CPU. Slt 3 represents the PCI devices farthest away frm the CPU. Nte: In a PC/104-Plus r PCI-104 system, all PCI devices shuld be lcated n ne side f the CPU bard (abve r belw the add-n cards). The CPU shuld nt be lcated between tw PCI devices. Rtary Switch SW1 PCI Slt Selectr The WLAN17202ER has an eight psitin rtary switch which supprts bth 3 and 4 bus master cnfiguratins. The PCI Slt Number can be cnfigured as fllws: Switch Psitin PCI Slt Number Bus Master 0 Slt 0 (clsest t CPU) 1 Slt 1 4 bus master 2 Slt 2 cnfiguratin 3 Slt 3 4 Slt 0 5 Slt 1 6 Slt 2 7 Slt 2 3 bus master cnfiguratin Bus Master Cntrl When the PC/104-Plus Specificatin was first intrduced, it nly allwed fr three PCI add-n cards t be bus masters. Versin 2.0 f the PC/104-Plus specificatin was released in Nvember This versin f the specificatin (which the WLAN17202ER is designed fr) adds supprt fr all 4 PCI slts t be bus masters. Fr cmpatibility with CPUs designed fr the lder PC/104-Plus Specificatin, the WLAN17202ER ffers several rtary switch settings. If the rtary switch is set in psitins 0 thrugh 3, the bard supprts bus mastering in all 4 PCI slts. If the rtary switch is set t psitins 4 thrugh 7, the bard will wrk in a 3 bus master cnfiguratin. 14 Netwrk Activity LED A netwrk activity LED (D1) may be enabled by setting jumper JP2 t pins 1-2 (default cnfiguratin). When JP2 is cnfigured t pins 2-3, an external activity LED cnnectr (JP1) is enabled. When cnfigured t use an external LED, the nbard activity LED (D1) will be disabled. Use the fllwing table t cnnect an external LED t jumper JP1: External LED Cnnectin (JP1) Pin Functin 1 Cathde 2 Ande Nte: Pin 1 is indicated by a square slder pad n the bttm side f the bard. 15 Bard Installatin Installing the Hardware The WLAN17202ER can be installed int a PC/104-Plus r PCI-104 stack. It can be lcated abve r belw the CPU, as lng as all PCI add-n cards are n the same side f the CPU. Static Precautins Keep yur bard in its antistatic bag until yu are ready t install it int yur system! When remving it frm the bag, hld the bard at the edges and d nt tuch the cmpnents r cnnectrs. Handle the bard in an antistatic envirnment and use a grunded wrkbench fr testing and handling f yur hardware. Steps fr Installing 1. Shut dwn the PC/104-Plus system and unplug the pwer crd. 2. Grund yurself with an anti-static strap. 3. Set the PCI Slt Selectr as described in the previus chapter. 4. If any ther PCI add-n cards are t be included in the stack, be sure that their PCI slt numbers are cnfigured crrectly (Slt 0 fr the bard clsest t the CPU, Slt 1 fr the next bard, etc). 5. Line up the pins f the WLAN17202ER s PC/104 and PC/104-Plus cnnectrs with the crrespnding bus cnnectrs f the stack. Make sure that bth cnnectrs are lined up. 6. Apply pressure t bth bus cnnectrs and gently press the bard nt the stack. The bard shuld slide int the matching bus cnnectrs. D nt attempt t frce the bard, as this can lead t bent/brken pins. 7. Attach the Main WLAN antenna t cnnectr J3. 8. If using an Auxiliary WLAN antenna, attach it t cnnectr J4. 9. If any bards are t be stacked abve the WLAN17202ER, install them. 10. Attach any necessary cables t the PC/104-Plus stack. 11. Re-cnnect the pwer crd and apply pwer t the stack. 12. Bt the system and verify that all f the hardware is wrking prperly. Nte: If multiple PCI devices are cnfigured t use the same PCI slt number, the system will nt bt. WLAN17202ER User's Manual 14 RTD Embedded Technlgies, Inc.

16 Installing Sftware After physically installing the WLAN17202ER, yur perating system must be cnfigured t recgnize the new bard. Windws Drivers Windws drivers shuld be included n CD-ROM with the WLAN17202ER. Installatin instructins shuld be prvided in the file README.TXT. Fllws these instructins t install and cnfigure the sftware. Nte: Befre installing any drivers, it is recmmended that yu visit the RTD web site ( t check fr a newer versin.
