7 Chpter 1. Sfety informtion This chpter presents the following sfety informtion tht you need to be fmilir with before you service Lenovo notebook computer. Generl sfety Follow these rules to ensure generl sfety: Observe good housekeeping in the re of the mchines during nd fter mintennce. When lifting ny hevy object: 1. Mke sure tht you cn stnd sfely without slipping. 2. Distribute the weight of the object eqully between your feet. 3. Use slow lifting force. Never move suddenly or twist when you ttempt to lift. 4. Lift by stnding or by pushing up with your leg muscles; this ction removes the strin from the muscles in your bck. Do not ttempt to lift ny object tht weighs more thn 16 kg (35 lb) or tht you think is too hevy for you. Do not perform ny ction tht cuses hzrds to the customer, or tht mkes the equipment unsfe. Before you strt the mchine, mke sure tht other service technicins nd the customer's personnel re not in hzrdous position. Plce removed covers nd other prts in sfe plce, wy from ll personnel, while you re servicing the mchine. Keep your tool cse wy from wlk res so tht other people will not trip over it. Do not wer loose clothing tht cn be trpped in the moving prts of mchine. Mke sure tht your sleeves re fstened or rolled up bove your elbows. If your hir is long, fsten it. Insert the ends of your necktie or scrf inside clothing or fsten it with non-conductive clip, bout 8 centimeters (3 inches) from the end. Do not wer jewelry, chins, metl-frme eyeglsses, or metl fsteners for your clothing. Attention: Metl objects re good electricl conductors. Wer sfety glsses when you re hmmering, drilling, soldering, cutting wire, ttching springs, using solvents, or working in ny other conditions tht might be hzrdous to your eyes. After service, reinstll ll sfety shields, gurds, lbels, nd ground wires. Replce ny sfety device tht is worn or defective. Reinstll ll covers correctly before returning the mchine to the customer. Fn louvers on the mchine help to prevent overheting of internl components. Do not obstruct fn louvers or cover them with lbels or stickers. Electricl sfety Observe the following rules when working on electricl equipment. Importnt: Use only pproved tools nd test equipment. Some hnd tools hve hndles covered with soft mteril tht does not insulte you when working with live electricl currents.mny customers hve, ner their equipment, rubber floor mts tht contin smll conductive fibers to decrese electrosttic dischrges. Do not use this type of mt to protect yourself from electricl shock. Find the room emergency power-off (EPO) switch, disconnecting switch, or electricl outlet. If n electricl ccident occurs, you cn then operte the switch or unplug the power cord quickly. Do not work lone under hzrdous conditions or ner equipment tht hs hzrdous voltges. 8 Removing or instlling min units Before you strt to work on the mchine, unplug the power cord. If you cnnot unplug it, sk the customer to power-off the wll box tht supplies power to the mchine, nd to lock the wll box in the off position. If you need to work on mchine tht hs exposed electricl circuits, observe the following precutions: Ensure tht nother person, fmilir with the power-off controls, is ner you. Attention: Another person must be there to switch off the power, if necessry. Use only one hnd when working with powered-on electricl equipment; keep the other hnd in your pocket or behind your bck. Attention: An electricl shock cn occur only when there is complete circuit. By observing the bove rule, you my prevent current from pssing through your body. When using testers, set the controls correctly nd use the pproved probe leds nd ccessories for tht tester. Stnd on suitble rubber mts (obtined loclly, if necessry) to insulte you from grounds such s metl floor strips nd mchine frmes. Observe the specil sfety precutions when you work with very high voltges; Instructions for these precutions re in the sfety sections of mintennce informtion. Use extreme cre when mesuring high voltges. Regulrly inspect nd mintin your electricl hnd tools for sfe opertionl condition. Do not use worn or broken tools nd testers. Never ssume tht power hs been disconnected from circuit. First, check tht it hs been powered off. Alwys look crefully for possible hzrds in your work re. Exmples of these hzrds re moist floors, non-grounded power extension cbles, power surges, nd missing sfety grounds. Do not touch live electricl circuits with the reflective surfce of plstic dentl mirror. The surfce is conductive; such touching cn cuse personl injury nd mchine dmge. Do not service the following prts with the power on when they re removed from their norml operting plces in mchine: Power supply units Pumps Blowers nd fns Motor genertors Similr units s listed bove This prctice ensures correct grounding of the units. If n electricl ccident occurs: Use cution; do not become victim yourself. Switch off power. Send nother person to get medicl id. Sfety inspection guide The purpose of this inspection guide is to ssist you in identifying potentilly unsfe conditions. As ech mchine ws designed nd built, required sfety items were instlled to protect users nd service technicins from injury. This guide ddresses only those items. You should use good judgment to identify potentil sfety hzrds due to ttchment of non-lenovo fetures or options not covered by this inspection guide. If ny unsfe conditions re present, you must determine how serious the pprent hzrd could be nd whether you cn continue without first correcting the problem. Consider these conditions nd the sfety hzrds they present: Electricl hzrds, especilly primry power (primry voltge on the frme cn cuse serious or ftl electricl shock) Explosive hzrds, such s dmged cthode ry tube (CRT) fce or bulging cpcitor Mechnicl hzrds, such s loose or missing hrdwre 2 Hrdwre Mintennce Mnul

9 To determine whether there re ny potentilly unsfe conditions, use the following checklist t the beginning of every service tsk. Begin the checks with the power off, nd the power cord disconnected. Checklist: 1. Check exterior covers for dmge (loose, broken, or shrp edges). 2. Power off the computer. Disconnect the power cord. 3. Check the power cord for:. A third-wire ground connector in good condition. Use meter to mesure third-wire ground continuity for 0.1 ohm or less between the externl ground pin nd the frme ground. b. The power cord should be the uthorized type specified for your computer. Go to: c. Insultion must not be fryed or worn. 4. Check for crcked or bulging btteries. 5. Remove the cover. 6. Check for ny obvious non-lenovo ltertions. Use good judgment s to the sfety of ny non-lenovo ltertions. 7. Check inside the unit for ny obvious unsfe conditions, such s metl filings, contmintion, wter or other liquids, or signs of fire or smoke dmge. 8. Check for worn, fryed, or pinched cbles. 9. Check tht the power-supply cover fsteners (screws or rivets) hve not been removed or tmpered with. Hndling devices tht re sensitive to electrosttic dischrge Any computer prt contining trnsistors or integrted circuits (ICs) should be considered sensitive to electrosttic dischrge (ESD). ESD dmge cn occur when there is difference in chrge between objects. Protect ginst ESD dmge by equlizing the chrge so tht the mchine, the prt, the work mt, nd the person hndling the prt re ll t the sme chrge. Notes: 1. Use product-specific ESD procedures when they exceed the requirements noted here. 2. Mke sure tht the ESD protective devices you use hve been certified (ISO 9000) s fully effective. When hndling ESD-sensitive prts: Keep the prts in protective pckges until they re inserted into the product. Avoid contct with other people. Wer grounded wrist strp ginst your skin to eliminte sttic on your body. Prevent the prt from touching your clothing. Most clothing is insultive nd retins chrge even when you re wering wrist strp. Use grounded work mt to provide sttic-free work surfce. The mt is especilly useful when hndling ESD-sensitive devices. Select grounding system, such s those listed below, to provide protection tht meets the specific service requirement. Note: The use of grounding system to gurd ginst ESD dmge is desirble but not necessry. Attch the ESD ground clip to ny frme ground, ground brid, or green-wire ground. When working on double-insulted or bttery-operted system, use n ESD common ground or reference point. You cn use cox or connector-outside shells on these systems. 10 Grounding requirements Electricl grounding of the computer is required for opertor sfety nd correct system function. Proper grounding of the electricl outlet cn be verified by certified electricin. 27 Chpter 2. Generl checkout Before you go to the checkout instructions, ensure tht you red the following importnt notes. Importnt notes: Only certified trined personnel should service the computer. Before replcing ny FRU, red the entire pge on removing nd replcing FRUs. When you replce FRUs, it is recommended to use new nylon-coted screws. Be extremely creful during such write opertions s copying, sving, or formtting. Drives in the computer tht you re servicing sequence might hve been ltered. If you select n incorrect drive, dt or progrms might be overwritten. Replce FRU only with nother FRU of the correct model. When you replce FRU, mke sure tht the model of the mchine nd the FRU prt number re correct by referring to the FRU prts list. A FRU should not be replced becuse of single, unreproducible filure. Single filures cn occur for vriety of resons tht hve nothing to do with hrdwre defect, such s cosmic rdition, electrosttic dischrge, or softwre errors. Consider replcing FRU only when problem recurs. If you suspect tht FRU is defective, cler the error log nd run the test gin. If the error does not recur, do not replce the FRU. Be creful not to replce nondefective FRU. Wht to do first When you return FRU, you must include the following informtion in the prts exchnge form or prts return form tht you ttch to it: 1. Nme nd phone number of service technicin 2. Dte of service 3. Dte on which the mchine filed 4. Dte of purchse 5. Filure symptoms, error codes ppering on the disply, nd beep symptoms 6. Procedure index nd pge number in which the filing FRU ws detected 7. Filing FRU nme nd prt number 8. Mchine type, model number, nd seril number 9. Customer's nme nd ddress Note: During the wrrnty period, the customer my be responsible for repir costs if the computer dmge ws cused by misuse, ccident, modifiction, unsuitble physicl or operting environment, or improper mintennce by the customer. Following is list of some common items tht re not covered under wrrnty nd some symptoms tht might indicte tht the system ws subjected to stress beyond norml use. Before checking problems with the computer, determine whether the dmge is covered under the wrrnty by referring to the following list: The following re not covered under wrrnty: LCD pnel crcked from the ppliction of excessive force or from being dropped Scrtched (cosmetic) prts Distortion, deformtion, or discolortion of the cosmetic prts Plstic prts, ltches, pins, or connectors tht hve been crcked or broken by excessive force Dmge cused by liquid spilled into the system Copyright Lenovo

Check for obvious dmge to hrd disk drive. If the spindle of hrd disk drive becomes noisy, the hrd disk drive might hve been dropped or subject to excessive force. 29 Chpter 3. Crete nd use USB repir shim Wht is USB repir shim? A USB repir shim is creted by writing repir shim imge to USB storge drive. Once creted, it cn be used to boot nd service the Chromebook computer, including: Dignose problems nd restore system to fctory settings. Refresh the system with the ltest firmwre. Before replcing ny FRUs, use the repir shim to dignose nd identify problems. Note: You do not need to use the repir shim to dignose problems before replcing CRUs. For the list of CRUs for your computer, refer to Lenovo 100e Chromebook CRU list on pge 22. Crete repir shim Step 1. Prepre USB drive.the cpcity of the USB drive should be t lest 8 gigbytes (GB). Attention: Creting repir shim deletes ll files stored on the USB drive. Bck up personl files before creting the shim. Step 2. Downlod the imge file of the repir shim from A Lenovo service credentil is needed to downlod the imge file. Attention: Mke sure to downlod the ltest version of the imge file. A shim creted with n erlier version of the imge file my cuse the repir process to fil. Step 3. Use disk imge tool to write the downloded imge to the USB drive. An open source tool Win32 Disk Imger is vilble for downlod t Boot into Developer Mode Step 1. Shut down the Chromebook. Step 2. While holding down esc nd the Refresh key, press the power button.wit for the Chromebook to boot in Recovery Mode. Step 3. When the recovery screen is displyed, press ctrl d. Note: A messge Plese insert recovery USB stick or SD crd. is typiclly displyed on the Recovery screen. Step 4. Press Enter to turn OS verifiction OFF. Attention: If you press Enter, ll locl dt on your Chromebook will be deleted. Step 5. Wit for the Chromebook to restrt or press ctrl d to strt immeditely.your Chromebook will restrt nd prepre to boot into Developer Mode. Note: It tkes bout 10 to 15 minutes for your Chromebook to trnsition into Developer Mode. If you need to boot into norml mode, strt your Chromebook, press the Spce key when the messge OS Verifiction is OFF is displyed. Copyright Lenovo

30 Disble ROM-write protection You need to disble the ROM-write protection function before you cn use repir shim to dignose nd fix problems. Step 1. Disconnect nd the re-connect the bttery cble.refer to on pge for how to locte nd disconnect the bttery cble. Step 2. Connect the Chromebook to c power to ctivte the bttery. Step 3. Boot the Chromebook into Developer Mode.Refer to Boot into Developer Mode on pge 23 for instructions. Step 4. Press ctrl lt (F2) to disply the virtul terminl. Step 5. Type root nd press Enter to log in s root. Step 6. Type the following commnd nd press Enter t the commnd prompt. flshrom p host wp-disble Step 7. Type the following commnd nd press Enter t the commnd prompt. flshrom p ec wp-disble Step 8. Press the Refresh key nd the power button to restrt the Chromebook. The ROM-write protection is disble fter restrt. Use USB repir shim to dignose nd fix problems Mke sure the ROM-write protection hs been disbled. Refer to Disble ROM-write protection on pge 24 for instructions. Step 1. While holding down the esc nd the refresh key, press the power button.the Chrome OS recovery screen should be displyed. Step 2. Connect the USB repir shim to the computer. The repir shim will updte the computer firmwre nd OS imge utomticlly. Step 3. When prompted, choose I to instll the shim imge to the computer.when the updte is completed, the computer restrts to the fctory-test-imge environment nd then strts the Finl Function Test (FFT). The FFT will run for 10 minutes nd then the Finl Assembly Test (FAT) will strt. Note: When computer restrts, remove the repir shim nd put it in sfe plce. Step 4. If the Vitl Product Dt (VPD) is displyed on the screen, press esc to continue. If the system bord is replced, you re required to enter the VPD. Note: The VPD is 20 chrcter string. Tble 1. 31 Step 6. If the fctory test items revel defective component, turn off the computer, disconnect the c power dpter, nd then replce the defective component. Step 7. Turn on the computer.the computer should strts to the fctory-test-imge environment gin. It is recommended tht you run Finl Function Test (FFT) to ensure tht new components function correctly. Step 8. Run the GoogleRequiredTests.If the tests finish successfully, ll dt stored on the computer will be deleted nd the computer will be turned off. If the GoogleRequiredTests fils, refer to Common issues leding to GoogleRequiredTests fil on pge 26. Note: If ny test is mrked s filed, the finl process cnnot be completed. The finl process cn be forced to end by pressing the f key. Do not force the finl process to end when component fils the test. Force the finl process to end only when the test hs to be bypssed becuse it cnnot be performed. After the repir process is completed, the built-in bttery is disbled. The system is in clen out-of-box stte. In order to turn on the computer, ttch the c power dpter to the power connector on the computer first. If pplicble, customers must re-enroll the system for enterprise enrollment. Note: ROM-write protection is re-ctivted fter the repir process. Fctory test items When the computer restrts to the fctory-test-imge environment, fctory test items will run utomticlly. Tble 2. Fctory test items Test item Stress Test FATP Test GoogleRequiredTests Description The Stress Test is designed to test how the system functions under stress by running the mximum worklod pplictions. The Stress Test includes the test of memory, microprocessor, nd grphics crd. The test tkes bout 10 minutes to finish. The FATP Test is designed to test the individul component to verify its function, such s the disply, udio, cmer, keybord, nd other components. It is recommended tht you run ll the FATP Test items. Some test items might require n HDMI monitor or n SD crd. If the devices re not vilble, the tests cn be bypssed, but with the overll test mrked s filed. This will require the finlized step of the GoogleRequiredTests to be forced in order to complete the servicing of the computer. GoogleRequiredTests checks the system sttus nd helps reset the system bck to the fctory-defult settings. If ny tests fils, the system cnnot be finlized. Chpter 3. Crete nd use USB repir shim 25

32 Common issues leding to GoogleRequiredTests fil Issue HWID mismtch Description Ech Chromebook hs known hrdwre configurtion. Ech configurtion is ssigned n HWID. HWID mismtch cn be cused by using unuthorized prts, or missing prts. If the write-protect function is not turned off before recovering the computer with the repir shim, it will lso cuse HWID mismtch. Write-protect function is off System cnnot be finlized until the write-protect function is turned bck on. Hrdwre identify A set of vlid hrdwre identities (HWIDs) re provided by Google. Google logs the exct hrdwre combintion into Chromebook nd cretes HWID. The HWID is used to ensure tht ll prts re vlid during the repir of the Chromebook. The HWID is used for the following purposes: Auto-updte new ptches nd softwre for the lifetime of the computer Recover the computer to the fctory defult settings If unuthorized prts re instlled, you might not get the correct uto-updtes for your computer, or you might not recover your computer successfully to the fctory defult settings. For exmple, if you instll different model of the wireless LAN crd, which is not the required configurtion, the HWID will not mtch. HWID is checked by using the repir shim. 26 Hrdwre Mintennce Mnul

37 Chpter 5. Removing FRU or CRU Generl guidelines When removing or replcing FRU, ensure tht you observe the following generl guidelines: 1. Do not try to service ny computer unless you hve been trined nd certified. An untrined person runs the risk of dmging prts. 2. Begin by removing ny FRUs tht hve to be removed before replcing the filing FRU. Any such FRUs re listed t the beginning of ech FRU replcement procedure. Remove them in the order in which they re listed. 3. Follow the correct sequence in the steps for removing FRU, s shown in the illustrtions by the numbers in squre cllouts. 4. When removing FRU, move it in the direction s shown by the rrow in the illustrtion. 5. To instll new FRU in plce, perform the removl procedure in reverse nd follow ny notes tht pertin to replcement. 6. When replcing FRU, crefully retin nd reuse ll screws. If screws re missing, look up the Lenovo prts numbers in Appendix B Lenovo prt numbers for CRUs nd miscellneous prts on pge 45 for replcement screws nd order them through the Lenovo CRM system. 7. When replcing the bse cover, repply ll lbels tht come with the replcement bse cover. If some originl lbels re not included with the replcement bse cover, pel them off from the originl bse cover nd pste them on the replcement bse cover. Refer to Appendix C Lbel loctions on pge 49 for the lyout of lbels on the bck side of the bse cover. DANGER Before removing ny FRU or CRU, shut down the computer nd unplug ll power cords from electricl outlets. Attention: After replcing FRU, do not turn on the computer until you hve ensured tht ll screws, springs, nd other smll prts re in plce nd none re loose inside the computer. Verify this by shking the computer gently nd listening for rttling sounds. Metllic prts or metl flkes cn cuse electricl short circuits. Attention: The system bord is sensitive to nd cn be dmged by ESD. Before touching it, estblish personl grounding by touching ground point with one hnd or by using n ESD strp (P/N ). Cut off the power supply from the built-in bttery pck Before replcing ny FRUs, cut off the power supply from the built-in bttery pck. Step 1. Boot the Chromebook into Developer Mode.Refer to Boot into Developer Mode on pge 23 for instructions. Step 2. Press ctrl lt (F2) to disply the virtul terminl. Step 3. Type chronos nd press Enter to log in. Step 4. Type sudo bsh nd press Enter. Note: If you hve set up pssword for the chronos ccount, type the pssword when prompted.
