7 1 Introdution 1 Virtul Dedited Grphis Aelertion (vdga) nd DiretPth I/O llow guest operting systems to diretly ess n I/O devie, ypssing the virtuliztion lyer. This diret pth, or pss-through n improve performne for VMwre guest systems for I/O devies. VMwre requires tht you ertify with eh Grphis Proessing Unit (GPU) tht you pln to support with the trget server pltform. A seprte sumission should e mde for eh pltform nd GPU omintion nd for eh type of support (vdga or DiretPth I/O). vdga GPU Certifition Progrm This ertifition progrm ertifies eligile server pltforms with supported GPU devies long with VMwre Horizon View Client (used for essing disply onsole of the pss-through virtul mhine under test). Using this ertifition kit, you n ertify GPU devies with one of the following guest operting systems: Windows Guest Operting Systems If you hoose to ertify with Windows, mke sure tht you go through Topology for Windows on pge 11 nd Configuring Windows Virtul Mhines on pge 14. Linux Guest Operting Systems If you hoose to ertify with Linux, mke sure tht you go through Topology for Linux on pge 12 nd Configuring Linux Virtul Mhines on pge 16. 8 VMwre vdga nd DiretPth I/O GPU Server Certifition Guide Certifition Test Proess The ertifition test proess is s follows. 1 Ensure tht the server to e used in the ertifition is listed in the VMwre Comptiility Guide (VCG). If the server is not listed in the VCG, the server must first pss the Stndrd Server Certifition. See for more informtion out the server ertifition. Note tht the Stndrd Server ertifition requires the third prty test suite (VT-d tests) e onduted on the pltform to e ertified. If neessry, these my e otined from your AMD or Intel representtive. Any prolems relted to these tests should e direted to Intel or AMD. After suessfully ompleting the server ertifition nd the third prty tests, fill out the sumission form. 2 Otin ertifition ID from VMwre. 3 Downlod nd instll the most urrent version of Workenh nd review the doumenttion. 4 Set up the hrdwre nd softwre s desried in this guide. 5 Run the ertifition tests from Workenh. Upon suessful ompletion of the tests, sumit results s desried in this guide. NOTE You n run the Stndrd Server Certifition tests nd the vdga nd DiretPth I/O GPU Devie Certifition tests on seprte setups in prllel. For more informtion nd ssistne, ontt your VMwre representtive. Hrdwre nd Softwre Requirements The setions elow detil the hrdwre nd softwre tht re required to omplete the tests outlined in this guide. Hrdwre Requirements Eligile server pltforms re those with VT-d or AMD IOMMU enled. These pltforms must lredy hve een ertified with the stndrd server ertifition. See for more informtion. To run the vdga or DiretPth I/O for GPU ertifition, the following hrdwre is required: Servers with Comptile Power nd PCI Slot Cpity. Physil Host Size Mny high-end GPU rds re full height, full length, nd doule width (tking up two slots on the motherord, ut using only single PCIe x16 slot). Verify tht the host hs enough room internlly to hold the hosen GPU rd in the pproprite PCIe slot. PCIe x16 is required for ll supported highest-end GPU rds. Host PSU (Power Supply Unit) Chek the power requirements of the GPU to mke sure the PSU oth is powerful enough nd ontins the proper power les to power the GPU. Virtul Tehnology for Direted I/O (VT-d) To use vdga or DiretPth I/O, verify tht the host supports either Intel VT-d (Virtuliztion Tehnology for Direted I/O) or AMD IOMMU (input/output memory mngement unit) Two-Disply Adpters 8 VMwre, In.

Network Setup To run the ertifition tests, it is reommended tht you onfigure puli test network s outlined in the following setion. Setting Up the Test Network(s) DHCP on the Puli Network The test suite requires DHCP server on the puli network, s virtul mhines reted during testing need to quire IP ddresses using DHCP. The test systems themselves n hve stti IP ddresses, if desired, ut DHCP must e ville on the puli network. Stti IP Addresses on the Puli Network If you re using stti IP ddresses for the systems on puli network, dd the stti IP ddresses nd the host nmes of ll prtiipting peers, in the respetive /et/hosts file. If the peer ddresses re not in the /et/hosts file, onnetions etween the mhines will fil. 13 Setting Up the Tested Login Informtion for ESXi hosts/vcenter Server To void dislosing onfidentil psswords, VMwre reommends tht you use the following usernmes nd psswords for ertifition testing. ESXi: login: root pssword: Admin!23 vcenter Windows: login: pssword: Admin!23 vcenter VCSA: login: pssword: Admin!23 Instlling nd Configuring ESXi Before running tests, you must instll ESXi on the mhines under test. For informtion on how to instll ESXi, see ESXi Instlltion Guide. 1 After the ESXi host oots, press F2 to enter the Customize System menu. 2 Selet the Trouleshooting Mode Options su-menu to enle ESXi Shell nd SSH. 3 Run the following ommnd to disle the firewll: # esxli network firewll set -e flse 4 Enle the Host for GPU Pss-Through from the host to the virtul desktop. Before you enle GPU Pss-Through, hek the server BIOS to mke sure tht VT-d or AMD IOMMU is enled on the ESXi host. For more informtion out finding the VT-d or AMD IOMMU settings in your server BIOS, ontt your hrdwre vendor. 5 Enle Devie Pss-Through on the ESXi host. d e f Using the vsphere lient, onnet to vcenter nd selet the host with the GPU rd instlled. Selet the Mnge t for this host. Expnd the Hrdwre group nd lik PCI Devies. Right-lik on one of the GPUs instlled in the system nd lik Edit. In the Edit PCI Devie Avilility window, selet the hekox or oxes tht orrespond to the GPU dpters you wnt to use for pss-through. Clik OK. The GPU should now e listed in the window on the Advned Settings pge. 6 On Workenh, instll STAF on ESXi using Instlltion Helper: under VMwre > Open Instlltion Helper View, right-lik the trget host nd selet Instll STAF. Configuring Virtul Mhines The vdga nd DiretPth I/O tests require instlling virtul mhine on the host. If you re running virtul mhine with Windows guest operting system, see Configuring Windows Virtul Mhines on pge 14. If you re running virtul mhine with Linux guest operting system, see Configuring Linux Virtul Mhines on pge 16. VMwre, In. 13

Ensure tht the virtul mhine hrdwre is version 11 for ESXi 6.0, nd the network dpter type is VMXNET3. NOTE Ensure tht the virtul mhine nme does not hve lnk spes. For exmple, the orret nme formt is vm_1. The inorret nme formt is vm 1. A lnk spe in the virtul mhine nme my use the tests to fil. 2 If you re prompted to rete user ount when you re instlling the virtul mhine, ensure tht the ount nme is test, nd rete pssword for the test ount. If you re not prompted, power on the virtul mhine nd rete the test ount nd pssword. Perform the following steps to ensure tht the test ount hs the uto-logon feture enled: d e Clik Strt > Run. In the Run window, type ontrol userpsswords2 nd lik OK. Deselet the Users must enter user nme nd pssword to use this omputer hek ox nd lik Apply. In the Automtilly Log On window, enter the pssword tht you reted for the test ount. Clik OK to lose the Automtilly Log On window, nd then lik OK to lose the User Aounts window. 3 Disle the firewll. 4 Perform the following steps to disle the lnk ount poliy (enled y defult): d e f Clik Strt > Run. In the Run window, type gpedit.ms nd lik OK. In the Group Poliy window, lik Computer Configurtion > Windows Settings > Seurity Settings > Lol Poliies > Seurity Options. Doule-lik Aounts: Limit lol ount use of lnk psswords to onsole logon only. Selet Disled nd lik OK to lose the Automtilly Log On window, nd then lik OK to lose the User Aounts window. Clik File > Exit to lose the Group Poliy window. 5 Disle User Aount Control (UAC) - go to Control Pnel -> User Aounts -> Chnge User Aount Control Settings. Drg the slider to Never notify nd lik OK. 6 Instll VMwre tools orresponding to the host system s ESXi uild numer nd version using the Next Genertion Client: Right-lik the virtul mhine nd selet Guest > Instll/Upgrde VMwre Tools. 7 Perform the following steps to disle sleep mode in the guest operting system: d Clik Strt > Control Pnel > Hrdwre nd Sound > Power Options. Clik Chnge when the omputer sleeps. Selet Never for Turn off the disply nd Put the omputer to sleep settings. Clik Sve Chnges nd lose ll the windows. 8 Perform the following steps to disle the Windows Updte feture on the virtul mhine: Clik Strt > Run, type servies.ms. In the Servies window, look for the Windows Updte entry in the right pne. Doule-lik this entry nd in the window tht opens, Stop the servie. 14 VMwre, In.

In the Run window, type sepol.ms nd lik OK. Clik Seurity Settings > Lol Poliies > Seurity Options > User Aount Control: Run ll dministrtors in Admin Approvl Mode. Chnge the Lol Seurity Setting to Disled, nd lik OK. 10 On Workenh, instll STAF on the virtul mhine using Instlltion Helper: Under VMwre > Open Instlltion Helper View, expnd the host to see the registered virtul mhines, right-lik the virtul mhine nd selet Instll STAF. On the virtul mhine onsole, lik Run vmw-stf.t when the STAF instller CD utoply pops-up. Run the instlltion to ompletion. To enle virtul mhine for GPU pss-through, follow the heks nd steps in the following setion. 11 Adjust pihole.strt. NOTE This is required only if the virtul mhine hs more thn 2GB of onfigured memory. For virtul mhines tht hve more thn 2GB of onfigured memory, dd the following prmeter to the.vmx file of the virtul mhine (you n dd this t the end of the file): pihole.strt = Add the PCI devie. To enle virtul mhine for GPU pss-through, the PCI devie must e dded to the virtul mhine s hrdwre. d e f g Using the vsphere We Client, onnet diretly to the ESXi host tht hs the GPU rd instlled, or selet the host in vcenter. Right-lik the virtul mhine nd selet Edit Settings. From the New Devie drop-down menu t the ottom of the window, selet PCI Devie. Clik Add. Selet the pproprite PCI devie from the drop-down menu. If prompted, lik Reserve All Memory. Clik OK. 13 For vdga only: Instll View Agent on the virtul mhine nd reoot when prompted. 14 For vdga only: Instll the View Agent Diret-Connetion plugin (ville through VMwre for TESTING ONLY). 15 For vdga only: Instll the Grphis driver. Downlod the ltest Grphis driver nd instll it on the virtul mhine. (All drivers n e downloded from the GPU vendor's Drivers Downlod pge.) After the driver is instlled, reoot the virtul mhine. 16 For vdga only: Chek tht the virtul mhine is using the GPU nd instlled grphis driver. VMwre, In. 15

Virtul Dedited Grphis Aelertion (vdga) does not work through the vsphere onsole session. See VMwre View Horizon Client Setup (vdga ONLY) on pge 18 for detils. 17 For vdga only: After the virtul mhine hs reooted nd you hve onneted vi PCoIP in full sreen, hek to ensure tht the GPU is tive y viewing the disply informtion in DXDig.exe: Clik the Strt menu. Type dxdig nd lik Enter fter DxDig shows up in the list, or lik on it in the list. After DxDig lunhes, hek the Disply t to verify tht the virtul mhine is using the GPU nd driver. 18 Power off the virtul mhine. 19 Mke sure tht the system time of every virtul mhine s guest operting system is set to the sme time s the ESXi host nd the vsphere Client system. Configuring Linux Virtul Mhines 1 Instll the virtul mhine running Red Ht Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.6 ( 64-it) on the host system. Ensure tht the virtul mhine hrdwre is version 11 for ESXi 6.0, nd the network dpter type is VMXNET3. NOTE Ensure tht the virtul mhine nme does not hve lnk spes. For exmple, the orret nme formt is vm_1. The inorret nme formt is vm 1. A lnk spe in the virtul mhine nme my use the tests to fil. 2 Crete root ount for the virtul mhine nd use this ount for running the ertifition tests. 3 Disle the firewll. 4 Instll VMwre tools y performing the following steps: d In vsphere We Client or vsphere Client, mount the VMwre Tools virtul disk on the guest operting system. Right-lik the VMwre Tools instller file VMwreTools.x.x.x-xxxx.tr.gz, lik Extrt to, nd selet the desktop for your Linux distriution. The vmwre-tools-distri folder is extrted to the desktop. In the virtul mhine, log in to the guest operting system s root nd open terminl window. Run the instller nd onfigure VMwre Tools y using the following ommnd.
