Hardware ad Software Requiremets Avid has qualified AirSpeed support o the followig: Avid Uity PortServer Pro II based o the Itel Server Chassis SR 2200 platform The PortServer Pro based o the Itel ISP 2150 Iteret Server platform is ot qualified to support the AirSpeed. Avid Uity LANshare EX The AirSpeed coects to a Avid Uity PortServer Pro through a etwork switch. A etwork Domai Name System (DNS) server (recommeded) Your AirSpeed system requires specific Avid compoets ad software versios. AirSpeeds are shipped from Avid with the default time zoe set to Greewich Mea Time (GMT). After chagig the time as described i the Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad User s Guide. You must click Shutdow ad select Restart User Iterface or Restart Etire System before the AirSpeed UI reflects the ew time. 4

5 Hardware ad Software Requiremets Network IP Addresses Whe settig up the AirSpeed, you must use a static IP address. Dyamic Host Cofiguratio Protocol (DHCP) is ot supported i the iitial release of AirSpeed. The Obtai IP Address Automatically described i the Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad Setup Guide has bee removed from the AirSpeed UI for the iitial release. For more iformatio see, AirSpeed UI Chages o page 18. Features Not Supported i the Iitial Release This iitial release of AirSpeed supports capturig media through the serial digital iterface (SDI) directly ito workspaces o the Avid Uity MediaNetwork. A future release will add the capability of playig the media out as a media server. The followig are the features ot supported i the iitial release: Some of these fuctios might already be described i the Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad User s Guide. This guide will be updated whe the features become fully fuctioal. Play out, ad fuctios associated with playig out Geeral Purpose Iput/Output (GPIO) coector Soy remote cotrol protocol usig BVW slave deck cotrol operatios DVCAM PAL 4:2:0 is ot supported Uiversal Serial Bus (USB) coector (ot used) The Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad Setup Guide states that software updates are performed usig the USB coector. Although some maufacturig fuctios ca be performed through the USB coector, the software updates are performed through the etwork as described i the guide. The use of a USB keyboard or mouse is ot supported o the USB coector. 5

6 Versio 1.0 Release Notes AirSpeed I/O Peripheral Applicatios c A Avid AirSpeed I/O Peripheral CD-ROM is icluded with the AirSpeed eclosure. The CD-ROM icludes Avid FlightPla, Avid Pilot, Remote UI, ad Editor Igest Support. FlightPla ad Pilot have a olie Help with the applicatio. A hardcopy of the Avid AirSpeed FlightPla ad Pilot User s Guide is icluded with the AirSpeed. The Remote UI is a applicatio that provides remote access to the AirSpeed UI Setup settigs. These settigs are described i the Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad Setup Guide. Editor Igest Support istalls a file eeded for accessig the AirSpeed from a remote etwork cliet. The AirSpeed I/O Peripheral applicatios caot be istalled o the systems that have the AirSPACE applicatios istalled: LauchPad ad MissioCotrol. Updatig Software The AirSpeed software upgrade process documeted i the Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad User s Guide requires a.iso file o the etwork which ca be reached via a Web browser. Sice the Avid Uity MediaMaager rus a Web server, Avid recommeds you use your MediaMaager to provide such a directory. Before you ca update your AirSpeed software through the etwork usig the AirSpeed UI, you eed to create a Web server directory o your Avid Uity MediaMaager server. To set up a web server directory o your MediaMaager: 1. O the MediaMaager desktop, right-click My Computer ad select Maage. 2. I the Computer Maagemet widow, expad Services ad Applicatios > Iteret Iformatio Services > Default Web Site. 3. Right-click the OMM object ad select Properties. 4. I the Properties dialog, check the Directory Browsig checkbox uder Local Path. 5. Note the directory path show i the Local Path box. 6

7 Supported Resolutios ad Cofiguratios c 6. Click OK. This allows you to browse to the c:/omm directory level ad below. 7. I Widows Explorer, avigate to the directory show i the Local Path box, oted above. (This is typically c:/omm.) 8. I the omm directory, create a directory amed airspeed. 9. Copy the AirSpeed_.iso file ito the airspeed directory. If you reame the AirSpeed.iso file, you must follow the amig requiremets listed i the Software Tab sectio of the Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad User s Guide. Supported Resolutios ad Cofiguratios AirSpeed v1.0 supports the followig resolutios: DV25 DV50 IMX (MPEG 50) The followig list provides the maximum qualified cofiguratios: Te AirSpeed eclosures ca simultaeously capture DV 25 o a PortServer Pro II or LANshare EX at a time. Five AirSpeed eclosures ca simultaeously capture DV 50 o a PortServer Pro II or LANshare EX at a time. Twety AirSpeed eclosures ca simultaeously capture DV 25 o a Avid Uity system. Te AirSpeed eclosures ca simultaeously capture DV 50 o a Avid Uity system. This requires at least two PortServer Pro II or LANshare EX systems. 7

8 Versio 1.0 Release Notes Table 1 list the combiatio of AirSpeeds ad Avid editig systems that have bee qualified o a PortServer Pro II or a LANshare EX while simultaeously capturig ad editig. Whe recordig DV 50 or MPEG 50 media, you are usig twice the badwidth of DV 25. Therefore half the amout of AirSpeeds ca simultaeously record DV 50 or MPEG 50 tha whe recordig DV 25. AirSpeed records sigle-stream DV 25 to mirrored workspaces, the Avid editig system uses dual-stream DV 25. Capturig for 24 hours does ot mea oe 24-hour master clip but multiple master clips totalig 24 hours with a maximum of 3 hours per clip. The AirSpeed ca ru for 24 hours per day for 7 days a week (eight, 3-hour capturig per day). The maximum capturig time is 3 hours. Avid editig systems caot ope a clip that exceeds 3 hours. 8

Keyboard, Video, Mouse Switches 3-Butto Mouse Some Rarita keyboard, video, ad mouse (KVM) switches fail to operate the AirSpeed correctly whe usig the ewer thi 4 meter Rarita cables. To achieve the best performace from your AirSpeed, Avid recommeds that you power cycle your AirSpeed oce a week (7 days). Power cyclig the AirSpeed refreshes the memory. The middle butto o a 3-butto mouse ca perform illegal actios ad cause errors whe used with the AirSpeed UI. Do ot use a 3-butto mouse with AirSpeed. Network Chages Usig the AirSpeed UI LTC Iput ad Output Ay chages made i the Setup > Network tab of the AirSpeed UI, will require you to restart the AirSpeed. You must click Shutdow ad select Restart Etire System. The Logitudial Timecode (LTC) coectors o the rear of the AirSpeed are desiged to accept a valid LTC iput ad pass the sigal through to the LTC Out 1 coector. This coectio is used to daisy-chai the LTC sigal to other devices. The LTC Out 2 fuctioality has ot bee implemeted i the iitial release of AirSpeed. 9

10 Versio 1.0 Release Notes Audio Sample Rates Static Mouted Workspaces DNS Server Not Used Leave AirSpeed Capture Ready Whe sharig media i a workgroup eviromet or playig out media o aother device, make sure you select the audio sample rate that is compatible with your playout device. If you capture media with AirSpeed that cotais 24-bit audio ad attempt to trasfer the 24-bit audio tracks to a device that is desiged for 16-bit audio, errors might appear. Avid recommeds you use static mouted workspaces with the AirSpeed. You must disable dyamically mout workspaces o the Avid Uity PortServer. To disable dyamic mouted workspaces: 1. Log i to your Avid Uity PortServer. 2. Double-click PortServerCofiguratio.exe i the followig locatio: drive:\program Files\Avid Techology\AvidUity\PortServerStartup The Avid Uity PortServer Service Cofiguratio widow opes. 3. Ucheck Eable dyamic moutig of MediaNetwork workspaces if selected. 4. Click OK ad log off the Avid Uity PortServer. The AirSpeed does ot display a warig that trasfers ad check-is will fail whe you deselect the Use Followig DNS Server i the Setup > Network tab. The DNS server allows you to use DNS ames to idetify the MediaMaager ad PortServer i the Setup > Sed tab. Whe a DNS server is ot used, type i the IP addresses of the MediaMaager ad PortServer i the Setup > Sed tab. Cotrol the AirSpeed usig oe method at a time. To be more specific, if you have scheduled captures usig CaptureMaager, be aware that simultaeous use of other cotrol applicatios such as Pilot ad the AirSpeed UI ca create coflicts which will result i scheduled feeds ot beig captured. 10

11 Special Notes To avoid such coflicts, make sure you uload the clip after you have captured or played a clip usig a etwork applicatio, ad if you are maually cotrollig the AirSpeed with the buttos o the frot pael. Whe usig a automatio cotrol applicatio to cotrol the AirSpeed, make sure you leave the AirSpeed i a idle state with o clip loaded whe fiished. Iteral Drives Fillig ad Failed Trasfers If you suspect that the AirSpeed does ot have all the space available o the iteral drives that you feel it should, or if a capture is failig due to a lack of space, check the iteral drives for clips that have ot trasferred. Clips are left o the AirSpeed due to failed or partial trasfers caused by uexpected etwork evets. To check for clips that have ot trasferred, use the Media Browse or FlightPla applicatio. If you see a clip that is listed i the Media Browse or FlightPla applicatio that does ot appear i MediaMaager, that clip has ot trasferred. If the clip is oe you do ot wat, highlight the clip i the FlightPla applicatio ad delete it. If you wat the captured clip that is o the iteral drives, drag the clip from FlightPla to a Bi o your Avid editig system (such as NewsCutter) to maually trasfer the clip. Oce the trasfer is complete, AirSpeed will delete the trasferred clip through its Auto Delete process. You ca also re-trasfer clips that have failed to trasfer by right-clickig the clip i Media Browse, ad selectig Trasfer to Uity (server) as log as the capture was successful. Multiple Domai Names ad DNS servers I the evet there is a failure with the primary domai ad DNS server, multiple domais ad DNS servers ca be used as backups. To create multiple domai ames ad DNS serves: 1. Ope a cosole widow by simultaeously pressig Ctrl+Alt+F2. 2. Log i usig: - logi ame mait - password mars 11

12 Versio 1.0 Release Notes 3. At the commad prompt, type cd /usr/home/pluto/etc, ad press Eter. 4. Type vi secodary_ds, ad press Eter. 5. Type i (this characters does ot display, the editor goes ito isert mode). The i the followig step represets the IP address of the backup DNS servers o the etwork. You ca eter as may DNS servers as you wat. Checkig Media Ito Two Projects Auto Delete Recommedatio 6. Type the followig to add additioal DNS servers as backups: > ameserver... ad press Eter > ameserver... ad press Eter > Press Esc ad type :wq! ad press Eter 7. Close the cosole widow by simultaeously pressig Ctrl+Alt+F3. 8. Restart the AirSpeed by selectig Restart Etire System i the Shutdow widow of the AirSpeed UI. Whe the AirSpeed chael i Avid inews Media Browse CaptureMaager is set to check media ito oe project, ad the Setup > Destiatio Template tab of the AirSpeed UI has a differet Project etered, the media is checked ito both projects. Either project ca be deleted without affectig the other project as log as you do ot delete the media. If the clip ad the media files are deleted i oe of the projects, the clip will still be available i the other project but the media will be offlie. The Auto Delete dialog box does ot have ay restraits o the umbers you ca eter. Whe usig Auto Delete, Avid recommeds you do ot set the start deletig value to more tha 90% ad that you set the stop deletig value at least 10% less tha the start deletig value. Media is deleted after it has bee trasferred ad saved to the Avid Uity MediaNetwork workspace. If AirSpeed is uable to trasfer the media or if the workspace is filled, AirSpeed will cotiue to capture util the iteral drives are filled. Oce the coditio is corrected, ad the media is trasferred, media will delete as specified i the Auto Delete dialog box. 12

13 Special Notes Virtual Network Computig Navigate to the Auto Delete dialog box i the AirSpeed UI as follows: Setup > System Cofig >Auto Delete The default Auto Delete settigs are set to start deletig media whe the iteral drives are at 75% full ad stop at 25% full. As a alterative to usig the Remote UI applicatio, there is a applicatio called Virtual Network Computig (VNC) which provides access to the AirSpeed UI from a remote computer. This cross-platform software allows you to perform all keyboard ad mouse fuctios o the AirSpeed usig a etwork coectio. Multiple VNC sessios ca be ru simultaeously o a sigle computer. Each VNC sessio displays a sigle AirSpeed UI. Dowload the VNC Viewer cliet applicatio ad documetatio from To access AirSpeed via VNC Viewer over the etwork: 1. Dowload ad istall the VNC Viewer software. 2. Start VNC Viewer. 3. I the VNC Viewer: Coectio Details dialog box, type the AirSpeed ame or the IP address of the AirSpeed, ad click OK. 4. At the VNC Viewer: Autheticatio dialog box type mars i the Password text box ad click OK. 13

14 Versio 1.0 Release Notes The AirSpeed UI displays i a widow o your local system. Whatever process that is curretly beig performed o the AirSpeed is displayed i the widow. You ca click o ay butto, tab, ad eter data from your remote system to cotrol ad cofigure the AirSpeed. Kow Bugs The meu buttos (Play, Capture, Setup, Diagostics, ad Shutdow) o the AirSpeed UI might shift right uexpectedly. Workaroud: To correct the AirSpeed UI shift, select Shutdow > Restart User Iterface to reboot the AirSpeed software. Whe chagig values i the Setup > System Cofig tab, the Save butto (diskette ico) remais dimmed ad does othig whe clicked uless Eter is pressed or you toggle oe of the radio buttos to make the Save butto become active. Workaroud: Whe chagig values i the Setup > System Cofig tab, press Eter to accept the chage ad eable the Save butto, the click Save. 14

15 Kow Bugs Whe editig clips that were captured across midight usig a AirSpeed, the embedded timecode will be missig from approximately 00:01:26:00 to the ed of the clip. The captured clip does ot report a ed time i the bi, ad causes a CM_OUT_OF_RANGE error whe attemptig move the locator bar by eterig a umeric value via the keyboard. Workaroud: To use the clip, clear the error dialog box ad scrub or play the clip to the locator positio you wat, the set the Mark IN ad Mark OUT poits. The clip ca the be edited ito a sequece with a ew timecode. Media that is captured up to midight or captures startig at midight work correctly. Some Setup tabs i the AirSpeed UI could display as a split scree whe the Revert butto is used to retur to the previous settigs. After you clear the Revert dialog box, the AirSpeed UI might display the top of oe settig widow ad the bottom of aother. To correct the split scree the AirSpeed UI eeds to be restarted. To correct a split scree usig the AirSpeed UI ad keyboard: 1. Press Alt+Tab to select the Shutdow butto. 2. Press Tab 3 times, to move the selectio to the OK butto. 3. Press the Space bar, to select okay. Your AirSpeed UI will restart ad clear the split scree coditio. To correct a split scree usig the a Telet sessio: 1. Start your Telet sessio o a etwork cliet. For iformatio o accessig a AirSpeed through a Telet sessio, see the Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad Setup Guide. 2. Log i usig: - logi ame mait - password mars 3. At the commad prompt, type kbs, ad press Eter. The AirSpeed UI shuts dow. 4. Type rm /var/tmp/lock.rubs, ad press Eter. 15

Whe i the FlightPla applicatio, if you select a AirSpeed from the Server list that is o loger available o the etwork, the applicatio searches the etwork the displays a dialog box iformig you the coectio has failed. After you click OK to close the dialog box, FlightPla remais uresposive for approximately 20 secods after the coectio time-out dialog box is closed. Some AirSpeeds might ot reappear i the Status viewer after a Avid Uity File Maager failover error. Eve though a AirSpeed might ot be listed, trasfers to Avid Uity ad check-is to MediaMaager cotiue to occur. Whe you drag ad drop a clip to a Avid editig system usig FlightPla, the percetage displayed whe completed is ot ituitive, ad icosistet betwee video formats. The Avid editor displays the followig percetages whe trasfer is complete. For PAL: 0 tracks of audio 100% 2 tracks of audio 107% 4 tracks of audio 115% 8 tracks of audio 131% For NTSC 0 tracks of audio 100% 2 tracks of audio 108% 4 tracks of audio 116% 8 tracks of audio 132% Whe you are i Retroloop mode ad press Stop to cacel the Retroloop capture, the temporary clip that was created for the Retroloop is ot deleted. To delete the clip from the AirSpeed: 1. Click the Play butto i the AirSpeed UI. 2. Load the clip if is ot already loaded. 3. Click the Delete butto. 16

17 Kow Bugs To delete the clip from FlightPla: 1. Start FlightPla applicatio. 2. Coect the AirSpeed i questio. 3. Highlight the clip ad press the Delete key o your keyboard or select File > Delete from the meu. After AirSpeed has captured a clip ad it has bee checked ito MediaMaager, you might receive a message statig Capture i progress whe you drag the clip from MediaMaager ito the Avid editor s bi. This is more likely to happe o captures over 30 miutes ad could occur o captures completed miutes, hours, or days ago. Workaroud: Right-click o the clip i bi ad select Overwrite MediaMaager Capture Lock. The Avid editor overwrites the metadata o the MediaMaager that was checked i by AirSpeed. Whe attemptig to create a clip i Absolute mode usig the AirSpeed UI or the Pilot applicatio, ad the duratio exceeds the available room o the workspace, the AirSpeed frot pael buttos become uresposive with the Stop butto lit. The Pilot applicatio displays a Out of disk space message. Workaroud: If this error coditio occurs, correct the duratio or iitiate a ew Absolute or Virtual capture usig either the AirSpeed UI or the Pilot applicatio withi the available room o the workspace. The frot pael butto fuctioality is restored. Pilot ad FlightPla To Delete Protect a clip, right-click o a clip ad select Delete Protect from the pop-up meu. Curretly, the Delete Protectio shortcut key combiatio (CTRL+P) i the Pilot ad the FlightPla applicatios is ioperable. To UDelete Protect a clip, right-click o a clip ad select UDelete Protect from the pop-up meu. Curretly, the Udelete Protectio shortcut key combiatio (CTRL+U) i the Pilot ad the FlightPla applicatios is ioperable. 17

Chapter 5 of the Avid AirSpeed Istallatio ad User s Guide describes the Setup butto i the AirSpeed UI. The followig chages have bee made sice the guide was prited: The VITC Output Lie Select settig that is show ad described i the Setup > Chaels tab does ot exist i the iitial release of AirSpeed. The Obtai IP Address Automatically settig that is show ad described i Setup > Network tab does ot exist i the iitial release of AirSpeed. The Obtai IP Address Automatically settig i the Avid AirSpeed RemoteUI applicatio is ot supported i the iitial release of AirSpeed. Do ot select this settig i the RemoteUI > Network tab. Retroloop Update The secod widow i the AirSpeed UI > Setup > System Cofig tab provides the settigs for Retroloop mode. The Retroloop Time umeric text box allows you to eter the amout of time (i secods) you wat to capture before a ukow evet occurs. You must select a Retroloop Time betwee 60 secods ad secods (approximately 4 hours). AirSpeed cotiuously captures media i a loop, usig this predetermied amout of time. The maximum allowed value caot exceed the total amout of disk space o the AirSpeed iteral drives. Whe the iteral drives are empty, the followig table provides the approximate secods available per video ad audio format. The umber of chaels selected for the capture does ot affect the predetermied amout of space. AirSpeed assumes eight tracks of audio are beig captured i Retroloop mode. 18
