You should have a basic uderstadig of how to use ad maage the Widows operatig system or the Mac OS X systems, ad you should be familiar with basic workgroup ad etwork cocepts. Macitosh cliets ad some Widows cliets have bee qualified to use the oboard 1-Gb ports. Macitosh cliets ca also use the Small Tree PEG1F or PEG2F optical adapter whe usig optical switches. Itel Pro/1000 Network Adapter ad Driver Istallatio The Itel Pro 1000 Etheret etwork adapters are recommeded for most Widows editig systems that coect to the Avid ISIS system. The Itel Pro 1000 PT is a copper iterface ad the Itel Pro 1000 PF is a optical iterface. Depedig o the Itel etwork adapter used i your system, you must load the appropriate driver from the appropriate folder. The Itel drivers qualified i this release are icluded i the Avid ISIS software istaller kit: i the \Drivers\ISIS Cliet\Itel_Pro1000\ folder. Istall the latest qualified driver (Itel_xx). Check the driver versio listed i the Widows Cotrol Pael. For the latest supported Etheret etwork adapters ad driver versios, see the Avid ISIS ReadMe that correspods with your software release.

The Widows Firewall is part of the Security Ceter located i the Widows XP Cotrol Pael. The Cliet Maager istaller will automatically cofigure the Widows Firewall to ope the correct ports, but it is possible to have errors if the Do t allow Exceptios optio is selected o the Geeral tab of the Widows Firewall dialog box. To make sure that the settigs are correct whe the firewall is eabled: 1. From the Widows Cotrol Pael, ope Security Ceter. The Widows Security Ceter widow opes. 2. Click Widows Firewall. The Widows Firewall dialog box opes. 3. Click the Geeral tab, ad select O (recommeded). You ca select Off (ot recommeded) if you do ot wat to eable the firewall. 4. Deselect Do t allow exceptios. 5. Click OK. Macitosh Support ad Firewall You ca use ay of the oboard Etheret ports o the Macitosh system to coect to the media etwork. For a list of supported Macitosh systems, see the Avid ISIS ReadMe. See the documetatio provided with your Macitosh system for the exact locatio of the Etheret port. Some Firewall settigs o Macitosh cliets prevet you from coectig to the Avid ISIS eviromet whe eabled. Badwidth Reservatios You ca use the Cliet Maager to obtai a default badwidth reservatio; however, the reservatio caot exceed your system s device limit or your cliet badwidth limit, whichever is lower. The reserved badwidth is the total badwidth available to the cliet; the sum of both reads ad writes. The Avid ISIS system eforces a effective badwidth limit based o either the cliet type specified by the Cliet Maager or the reserved badwidth value set i the Maagemet Cosole. Your Avid ISIS admiistrator sets the badwidth limits, ad the badwidth limit is listed i the Workspaces list. A high measuremet idicates a loger period of time was eeded for the operatio to complete. The Loop optio causes true loop behavior: at the ed of the specified duratio, the test stops, itermediate test files that have bee created are cleaed up, ad the the test restarts usig cleaed-up itermediate test files. The ISIS Read/Write test is a good stadard test because it icludes ulimited badwidth used to ascertai the available performace of the ed-to-ed path. The followig are typical results: - Sigle 1 Gb coectio produces a average of 96 MB/s - Dual 1 Gb coectio produces a average of 192 MB/s - 10 Gb coectio produces a average of 250 MB/s o writes ad 350 MB/s o reads 3. Depedig o the cliet applicatio, you ca select a typical I/O size for your applicatio ad ru a PathDiag to see the results that you ca expect from your cliet ruig that applicatio. I some cases, you might set the Trasfer Size to large I/O sizes to test switch performace. The utility ca attempt to perform I/O at a variety of fixed trasfer rates. This is useful for simulatig the behavior of applicatios that have a kow data rate. You ca select a data rate where I/Os do ot exceed a particular limit. A special ulimited trasfer rate settig is also available. Whe you select the ulimited trasfer rate, the PathDiag tool performs I/O operatios as fast as possible while beig affected by all aspects of the total system beig exercised. This optio cotrols the maximum size of test data files created for Reads or Writes. This optio might affect throughput measuremets. For example, at ay give data rate, a smaller file is opeed ad closed more ofte tha a larger file, creatig more overhead. The default file size is 100 MB. The Max File Size settig is very useful whe creatig custom PathDiag tests. If you use ay of the default sizes o a ISIS , you are doig I/O early 100% out of cache, rather tha disk I/O. This is great i determiig the health of your etwork, by taxig the etwork. If you wat to test pure disk I/O throughput, ru multiple istaces of PathDiag usig the largest supported file size of 2000 MB. 80

Whe you select this optio, the Path to Test parameter must specify a full path, icludig a file ame. The test utility uses the amed file for its Read tests. The utility creates the file if it does ot exist ad deletes it at the ed of testig. For this reaso, the amed file should ot already exist uless you wat it to be deleted whe the test is completed. With this optio selected, you ca ru PathDiag tool o multiple cliets simultaeously ad supply the same file ame. This allows PathDiag tool applicatios ruig o multiple cliets to read a commo file. (The file is created as eeded, ad the last PathDiag tool applicatio to stop deletes the file.) 3. Click OK. Settig Up a Network Coectivity Test The PathDiag tool provides a high-level verificatio of etwork coectivity whe you select Network Coectivity Test as a custom test parameter. The Custom Test Settigs area of the Avid ISIS PathDiag Settigs dialog box allows you to list up to 8 etwork hosts to test. Results display i the Test Results graph area of the PathDiag tool. To set up the Network Coectivity Test: 1. Click Custom Test i the PathDiag tool Settigs dialog box. The dialog box expads to display the Custom Test Settigs area. 2. 84 Test Results Test Results This sectio provides iformatio to help you iterpret test results displayed i the PathDiag tool mai widow. Average Rate Calculatio The average data rate is calculated over the duratio of the test. This calculatio icludes the time the utility requires to ope ad to close the test files, so the test file size (which you ca cofigure for custom tests) ca affect the overall measured throughput. Also, if the throughput is slow as the test is startig, this might be reflected i the average rate. For example, if the target badwidth is 4.0 MB/s, the actual average rate calculated at the coclusio of the test might be 3.98 or 3.99 MB/s. Performace Graph The graph of results over time ca help experieced users obtai iformatio about system performace. The followig display is a ormal ulimited read/write profile for a ISIS cliet. 84

85 Test Results The followig are a few items to look for: Treds: Does the system perform at a cosistet rate over time? Is there a upward or dowward tred i performace measured over time? If you otice a tred, it might be helpful to perform testig over a loger period of time to determie if the tred cotiues over loger duratios or if a recurrig patter emerges. It is ormal for the maximum read badwidth to be greater that maximum write badwidth. Patters: Is there a mometary drop i performace that occurs at cosistet or varied itervals? Patters ca emerge as a result of implemetatio details ad the cofiguratio of a particular system (for example, cachig strategies or physical memory), or they might idicate a load o a system that is occurrig periodically. Chages i performace as load varies: What occurs whe a subsystem is placed uder a load by other users (or PathDiag tool is ruig o aother cliet)? It might be easier to observe these iteractios by ispectig the plot of performace results over time. Measuremet Strategy Throughput measuremets are plotted periodically (every secods) ad represet a sapshot of performace at the time of the plot. This is doe to limit the amout of data that is plotted, which otherwise could iclude a very large umber of data poits. As a result, the performace graph could miss a mometary drop or icrease or a peak i performace that occurs betwee plot poits. The average rate calculatio reflects the impact of such a dip or spike, eve if the actual size of a mometary variatio does ot appear i the graph. Test Result Iterpretatio If your results fall below optimal performace, you ca check to see if your badwidth is limited. You ca use the Avid ISIS Maagemet Cosole to check your user badwidth i the Users list i the Users dialog box (see User Descriptios i the Avid ISIS Admiistratio Guide) ad your device badwidth i the Device list i the Device dialog box (see Device Descriptios i the Avid ISIS Admiistratio Guide). If your badwidth requiremets are greater tha the reservatios set i the Maagemet Cosole, your Avid ISIS admiistrator ca adjust the limits. If you decided to cacel the copy, ay files already copied to the ISIS ca be used. 96 Trasfer Queue ad Logs Trasfer Queue ad Logs The Data Migratio Utility keeps a log of Files Trasferred ad Files Failed. You ca view the curret log i the Trasfer Queue sectio of the Data Migratio Utility widow. The log file is automatically deleted ad a ew oe is started every time you ope the Data Migratio Utility. You ca save a copy of the log or the log for the curret work sessio. The Data Migratio Utility clears all logs whe you exit the applicatio. To view data i the Trasfer Queue: 1. Ope the Data Migratio Utility. (For iformatio o opeig the Data Migratio Utility, see Loggig Ito the Data Migratio Utility o page 90.) If the Trasfer Queue area is ot displayed, click the show Trasfer Queue butto to display pael. The Trasfer Queue area is the bottom sectio of the Data Migratio Utility widow. You ca sort the list i the widow by clickig the headigs at the top of the Trasfer Queue pael. Click the blue arrow to sort the Workspace field i ascedig or descedig order. 97 5 ISIS Log Utility The ISIS Log Utility used by Avid Customer Support shows the loggig iformatio of the ISIS cliet coectio. This utility is istalled with the ISIS cliet software ad is used to diagose cliet issues. This updated utility has a commo user iterface for Widows, Macitosh, ad Liux cliets. You ca load pre-defied profiles (based o commo troubleshootig scearios) that use trace filters to gather data. The Log Utility automatically compresses ad timestamps cotiuous logs. After you Take Sapshot of the loaded Profile results, you ca save the sapshot to a file. Through the couselig of Avid Customer Support, you ca also add specific Profiles to the list. Ruig the ISIS Log Utility To ru the Log Utility: 1. May of these failures could be a issue with the editor. - File or Workspace Access Capture these logs if the ISIS cliet caot mout Workspaces, access files withi a workspace, or received errors whe accessig Workspace files. - I/O Timeouts Capture these logs if the ISIS editig cliet displays semaphore timeout messages, delayed write failures, or droppig frames while workig with media o a Workspace. - Redistributio Problems Capture these logs if the ISIS cliet is experiecig errors, displayig messages, or droppig frame while the ISIS system is i the process of a redistributio. Although cliet performace is expected to drop durig ad a ISIS redistributio, these problems would be uder light ISIS loads ad low resolutios. 98

99 Chagig Settigs - Verbose Loggig This log captures a wide array of data i o specific area. Typically used whe the root of a problem is ukow ad you are lookig for clues. This loggig should ot be used uless specifically istructed to do so. These logs are excessive ad difficult to iterpret. 3. Click Load. The cofiguratio for the selected Profile is loaded. 4. (Optio) Click Curret Settigs to chage settigs i the cofiguratio. 5. Click Take Sapshot or Start Cotiuous Log. If you started a cotiuous log you eed to click Stop Cotiuous log before accessig the logs. The logs are automatically compressed ad saved to your cliet system. If you click Take Sapshot, click Save Sapshot to save the sapshot to a file. Depedig o your operatig system the default loggig directories for the ISIS Log Utility are: - Widows 7 ad Widows 2008 servers C:\Users\Admiistrator\Documets\ ISISLogUtility - Widows XP, Widows Vista 64 bit, ad Widows 2003 servers C:\Documets ad Settigs\Admiistrator\ISISLogUtility - Macitosh OSX /Users/Admiistrator/ISISLogUtility - Liux /home/<usersame>/isislogutility 6. Click Show Display or Save Sapshot to view or save the results. Chagig Settigs The recommeded default settigs are saved i each Profile. You should ot chage the pre-defied settigs uless istructed to by Avid Customer Support. To chage ISIS Log Utility test settigs: 1. Do oe of the followig to start the ISIS log Utility: t (Widows) Click Start > Programs > Avid > ISIS Cliet > ISIS Log Utility. t (Macitosh) From the Fider, click the Go meu ad select Applicatio > AvidISIS > ISISLogUtility.app. t (Liux) Click Applicatio > System Tools > ISIS Log Utility. 2.
