It is especially importat to check each step of your workflow. 2. Check this ReadMe file for the latest iformatio that might have become available after the documetatio was published. 3. Check the documetatio that came with your Avid applicatio or your hardware for maiteace or hardware-related issues. 4. 5 Overview Overview The Avid Nitris is desiged to capture ad output aalog ad serial digital media usig decks, cameras, ad audiotapes. The Avid Nitris is powered by a autosesig power supply coected by a stadard power cord to a wall plug or power strip. The Avid Nitris accepts video ad audio i differet formats ad resolutios, ad chages these formats ad resolutios to Avid-specific data for trasfer to the Avid editig system over a Digital Iterlik cable. The data trasfer uses a Avid-specific protocol that describes the format ad resolutio of the media beig captured. You the edit the media o the Avid editig system ad sed it back to the Avid Nitris. You ca chage the format ad resolutio as eeded for video ad audio output. The Avid Nitris cosists of: The Avid Nitris eclosure, backplae, power supply, ad power cord A stadard-defiitio (SD) video I/O board A high-defiitio (HD) video I/O board A eight-chael audio I/O board Three audio cables are provided with the Avid Nitris; aalog i, aalog out, ad AES/EBU I/O. The audio cables have a DB25 coector at oe ed that plugs ito the Avid Nitris ad the other ed of the cables have eight separate XLR coectors supportig eight chaels of audio. 6 Usig the Avid Nitris: for HP Workstatios ruig Avid DS Site Plaig Whe preparig your site, you must cosider the evirometal, electrical, ad space requiremets for your Avid Nitris workstatio, as well as ay additioal equipmet. Before settig up your system, see the ReadMe provided with the Avid editig applicatio to make sure that there are o chages to the iformatio i this documet. The required expasio boards are istalled ad cofigured for Avid Nitris. Do ot remove or modify these boards. For istructios o settig up the computer hardware, see the setup documetatio provided with the HP Workstatio. For a rackmout workstatio, you must istall the computer ito a stadard rack before coectig the hardware. To prevet equipmet damage that may be caused by static electricity, do all of the followig before makig ay coectios: Tur off all devices. Always use ati-static prevetio. Always coect devices to a properly grouded outlet. Touch the metal casig of the device before hadlig ay circuit boards. Evirometal Requiremets The site you choose for your Avid Nitris workstatio should meet the followig evirometal requiremets: Clea ad dust free Free from sigificat temperature or humidity chages Sturdy, level, ad ot subject to vibratio Away from radio frequecy emissios, high-traffic, or high-oise areas Provides adequate space i frot of ad behid the workstatio compoets, so that you ca coect cables ad service your workstatio. This also provides adequate airflow for coolig. A miimum clearace of 3 iches (7.6 cm) for the side ad back paels of the deskside base uit A table (or other surface) that is at least 60 iches wide by 48 iches deep (150 cm 120 cm) for the editig workstatio 6

7 Site Plaig Electrical Requiremets Your site should meet the followig electrical requiremets: Adequate power for each workstatio compoet, so that extesio cords are ot eeded. At least two 15-amp circuits available: oe for the workstatio, Nitris, ad accessories ad oe for the Avid storage system. Site is away from major electrical equipmet, such as motors, air coditioers, or elevators. Site is ot subject to static electrical buildup. Uses a uiterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect your workstatio from sudde power surges or losses, ad to save you from the resultig loss of work. Plug oly your Avid Nitris equipmet ito the power strip. Do ot plug i coffee makers, radios, lights, or other such devices. Avid recommeds that you mout your Avid Nitris i a rack before you coect ay cables. If you eed to rack mout the HP workstatio, a rack-mout kit is available from HP. Istallatio istructios are icluded with the kit. The HP Workstatio system requires 5 rack uits. See the followig sectios for more iformatio: Equipmet Evirometal ad Safety Guidelies Istallig the Avid Nitris i a Rack Equipmet Evirometal ad Safety Guidelies Whe you istall the Avid Nitris i a rack, you must take the followig precautios: Elevated Operatig Ambiet Temperature Whe the Avid Nitris is istalled i a closed or multiuit rack assembly, the operatig ambiet temperature of the rack eviromet might be greater tha the room ambiet temperature. Therefore, cosider istallig the equipmet compatible with the maufacturer s maximum ambiet temperature of 104 F (40 C). Reduced Airflow Do ot compromise the amout of airflow required for safe operatio of the equipmet. 8

9 Rack Moutig the Avid Nitris Eclosure Mechaical Loadig Avoid a hazardous coditio due to a ueve mechaical loadig. Circuit Overloadig Cosider coectig the equipmet to the supply circuit ad the effect that overloadig of circuits might have o overcurret protectio ad supply wirig. Use appropriate equipmet ameplate ratigs. Reliable Earthig Maitai reliable earthig of rack-mout equipmet. Give particular attetio to supply coectios other tha direct coectios to the brach circuit (for example, the use of power strips). Istallig the Avid Nitris i a Rack w The Avid Nitris is desiged for 19-ich (483-mm) rack eclosures ad requires three EIA rack uits (3U), or 5 ¼ iches (133.4 mm) of rack space. The Avid Nitris is shipped with rack-ut clips for those rack eclosures that do ot have threaded holes. Rack-ut clips are clipped i the holes of the rack that are used to secure the rack compoets i place. To esure the stability of the rack eclosure, start from the bottom whe you istall the rack compoets i the rack eclosure. Positioig the Avid Nitris i the Rack The followig procedure helps you decide where to istall the Avid Nitris i the rack. If your rack eclosure does ot have threaded holes, istall the rack-ut clips icluded with the Avid Nitris where the Avid Nitris frot pael secures to the rack eclosure. If your rack eclosure has threaded holes, do ot attach the rack-ut clips. To positio the Avid Nitris i the rack eclosure ad attach the rack-ut clips: 1. Select the lowest positio i the rack where you ca mout the Avid Nitris. Positio the Avid Nitris so the bottom is at the baselie of a U-aligmet positio. If your rack eclosure has threaded holes, cotiue with Securig the Avid Nitris i a Rack o page 11. 9

11 HD SD Rack Moutig the Avid Nitris Eclosure Securig the Avid Nitris i a Rack c The Avid Nitris is secured i the frot moutig rails of the rack with four rackmout screws. If your rack has threaded holes, use the proper rack screws for your rack. If your rack does ot have threaded holes, attach the rack-ut clips icluded with the Avid Nitris as previously described (see Positioig the Avid Nitris i the Rack o page 9). You should have someoe helpig you to lift the Avid Nitris eclosure. To secure the Avid Nitris ito the rack. 1. From the frot of the rack, positio the Avid Nitris so that it is flush agaist the frot moutig rails. The frot pael of the Avid Nitris has several status LEDs, audio meters, ad a power butto. Tur o the Avid Nitris after you have tured o your computer. Remove the AGP Card Support Assembly by squeezig the two sides of the retaier to release the lockig mechaism from the chassis. 2. Rotate the retaier ad lift it out of the system. 3. Ope the PCI retaier by pressig dow o the two gree clips at the eds of the retaier ad rotatig the retaier towards the back of the system. If it is difficult to disegage the gree clips, press the outside of the clips from the rear of the chassis while disegagig. 4. Istall the dual-lik board per the table below. You ca purchase either stadard high-resolutio flat-pael moitors or VGA moitors. The moitors coect to the NVIDIA graphics board (see the followig figure). The driver for the graphic board should be istalled o your system, but it is also located o the Avid DS Drivers CD-ROM. Verify that the power is tured off o the moitor ad the base uit, ad the coect these devices to a power source. 2. Attach oe ed of the cable to the moitor. Use adapter if eeded. 3. Attach the other ed of the cable to the appropriate DVI coector as show i NVIDIA Graphics Board i the xw8400 Workstatio o page 33. Use adapter if eeded. Coectig the Applicatio Key The applicatio key, commoly referred to as a dogle, allows the Avid software to ru o your system. If you have ot yet coected the applicatio key, you should do so before you ru the Avid applicatio. If your system has USB ports i the frot ad i the rear, Avid recommeds that you coect the applicatio key to a USB port at the rear of the system. 33

Coectig the SCSI Local Storage Systems Avid Nitris editig systems support the Avid MediaDock Ultra320 ad Avid VideoRAID as a local SCSI storage system. Local storage coects to the two SCSI chaels at the rear of the workstatio ad must be striped to provide the eeded throughput. Avid typically supports ewer drives as they become available. For the latest list of supported drives, see your Avid sales represetative. The coectios at the rear of the workstatio are HD 68-pi coectors. If you are goig to use SCSI devices for stadaloe storage, you must order the cables separately whe you order your Avid editig system. Also ote that the xw8400 does ot have oboard SCSI cotrollers. Istead, it uses a Atto UL4D SCSI card with dual-scsi coectors. The maximum legth of the exteral SCSI cables must ot exceed 16-feet (5 meters). If coectig two MediaDock Ultra320 eclosures (oe eclosure o each SCSI chael) you ca use a 16-foot (5 meter) SCSI cable o each SCSI chael. 35 Coectig to Avid Uity Shared Storage Formattig ad Stripig Media Drives Disk drives must be cofigured as Dyamic whe you are stripig drives. To cofigure ad stripe a drive: 1. Start your system, ad log i to a accout with admiistrative privileges. 2. Right-click the My Computer ico, ad select Maage. The Computer Maagemet widow opes. 3. Click the Disk Maagemet folder. For more iformatio o the Computer Maagemet widow, click the Help ico i the toolbar of the Computer Maagemet widow. 4. Make a drive Dyamic by right-clickig the disk ID sectio of the disk i the Computer Maagemet widow ad selectig Upgrade to Dyamic disk, or Create Dyamic disk, depedig upo the status of your disk. Whe you select a disk i the Computer Maagemet widow, the white sectio of the disk chages to stripes, showig that the sectio has bee selected. 5. Repeat step 4 for each drive you wat to stripe. 6. Right-click oe of the Dyamic drives ad select Actio > Create Volume. 7. Follow the istructios i the Create Volume Wizard to fiish stripig the drives usig NTFS format. Coectig to Avid Uity Shared Storage Avid Uity media etworks are shared storage ad etworkig solutios for sharig media betwee multiple workstatios. Depedig o which Avid Uity eviromet you have, a specific media etwork board is istalled i PCI slot 5 of your Avid Nitris workstatio. Avid Uity ISIS uses the optioal Itel PRO/1000 MT Dual Port Server Adapter board. This is supported for both Avid Symphoy ad Avid DS (32-bit ad 64-bit). Avid Uity MediaNetwork uses the optioal ATTO 3300 Fibre Chael board. This is oly supported for 32-bit applicatios, therefore it caot be used for the Avid DS 64-bit versio. 35

Referece Sigal c Wheever you use more tha oe video or audio device i your video editig eviromet, you must have a separate sychroizatio sigal coected to each device. A syc geerator or referece sigal provides a composite sigal that locks all the devices (video ad audio) to the mai video sigal. If the devices are ot i syc for example, a moitor might show rollig, tearig, or icorrect colors i the picture wheever you sed video betwee devices. To make sure the cofiguratio you are usig is properly syced, read the documetatio that ships with each of your video devices. Avid applicatios require that the VTR ad the Avid Nitris hardware be gelocked to the same timig source whe capturig or outputtig a digital cut. Syc Topology Whe you syc aalog ad digital video/audio devices, it is always preferable to feed every compoet with a separate black-burst or tri-level syc sigal i a star patter. Tri-level syc could be cosidered fuctioally the same as black-burst video i that it is simply the referece sychroizig iformatio from the facility s master geerator. You must use a sychroizatio sigal to sychroize your VTR ad the Nitris video subsystem for all the HD formats supported by Avid Nitris. Some HD formats ca use a black burst syc. 37

However, Avid requires a extra fa i the HP Workstatio for coolig the Avid board set. The followig procedure describes how to istall the fa Avid has added to the HP Workstatio. Reverse the procedure for removig the fa. If you are istallig a dual-lik board, you will also eed to istall a over-the-top fa. Refer to the Dual Boot System Setup for Avid DS ad Avid Symphoy documet that came with your dual-boot kit. Before you istall or remove the fa, you must make sure the system was tured off i a proper maer, the power cord is removed from the rear of the system, ad you follow the proper groudig techiques. To istall ad remove the fa: 1. Lay the system o its right side. 2. Ulock the left side cover usig the keys attached to the rear of the system. 55
