11 Get Started The fllwing tpics give yu all the infrmatin yu need t set up yur phne the first time. Yur Phne at a Glance The fllwing illustratin utlines yur phne s primary external features and buttns. Set Up Yur Phne Prir t using the phne, it is necessary t install and charge the battery. An ptinal micrsd memry card (nt included) can als be installed at this time. Remve the Back Cver 1. Using the slt prvided, gently lift the cver ff the phne. Get Started 1

12 2. Pull the cver up and then lift up and away frm the phne. Install the Memry Card T insert an ptinal micrsd card (nt included), carefully slide the memry card under the tp metal plate int the micrsd card scket until the card lcks int place. Fr mre infrmatin, see Memry Card. Install the Battery Insert the battery, aligning the gld cntacts n the battery with the gld cntacts n the phne, and gently press the battery int place. 13 Replace the Back Cver 1. Place the battery cver nt the back f the phne and press dwn. 2. Replace the battery cmpartment cver, making sure all the tabs are secure and there are n gaps arund the cver. Charge the Battery Yur phne is pwered by a rechargeable, standard Li-In battery. A Wall/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) is included with the phne fr charging the battery. Yu will need t charge the battery befre using yur phne. Warning! Use nly apprved accessries t charge yur phne. Apprved accessries are designed t maximize battery life. Using ther accessries may invalidate yur warranty and may cause damage. 1. Plug the USB cable int the charger/accessry jack n the bttm f the phne. 2. Plug the USB cable int the charging head, and then plug the charging head int an electrical utlet. 3. When charging is finished, remve the USB cable frm the charger/accessry jack n the phne. Get Started 3

14 Turn the Phne On Use the Pwer/Lck Key t turn the phne n. Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key t turn the phne n. If yur phne is activated, it will turn n, search fr Sprint service, and begin the setup applicatin. If yur phne is nt yet activated, see Activate Yur Phne fr mre infrmatin. Activate Yur Phne Depending n yur accunt r hw and where yu purchased yur phne, it may be ready t use r yu may need t activate it n yur Sprint accunt. If yu purchased yur phne at a Sprint Stre, it is prbably activated and ready t use. If yu received yur phne in the mail and it is fr a new Sprint accunt r a new line f service, it is designed t activate autmatically. When yu turn the phne n fr the first time, yu shuld see a Hands Free Activatin screen, which may be fllwed by a PRL Update screen and a Firmware Update screen. Fllw the nscreen instructins t cntinue. 15 If yu received yur phne in the mail and yu are activating a new phne fr an existing number n yur accunt (yu re swapping phnes), yu can activate n yur cmputer nline r directly n yur phne. Activate n yur cmputer: G t sprint.cm/activate and cmplete the nline instructins t activate yur phne. Activate n yur phne: Turn n yur new phne. (Make sure the ld ne is turned ff.) Yur phne will autmatically attempt Hands-Free Activatin. Fllw the n-screen prmpts t cmplete the activatin prcess. T cnfirm activatin, make a phne call. If yur phne is still nt activated, visit sprint.cm/supprt fr assistance. If yu d nt have access t the Internet, call Sprint Custmer Service at frm anther phne. Tip: D nt press the Pwer/Lck Key buttn while the phne is being activated. Pressing the Pwer/Lck Key cancels the activatin prcess. Nte: If yu are having any difficulty with activatin, visit sprint.cm/supprt. Cmplete the Setup After yu turn n yur phne and activate it, yur phne displays a Welcme screen. Fllw the prmpts t set up features and preferences n yur phne. Nte: Yu may be able t cmplete the setup screens befre yur phne has been activated n yur Sprint accunt. During r after setup, yu may see a Cnnectins Optimizer ntice. Read the ntice and tuch I Agree t allw yur phne t cnnect autmatically t the best available data netwrk, including Wi- Fi. T turn Cnnectins Optimizer ff at any time, tuch > > Settings > Cnnectins tab > Mre netwrks > Mbile netwrks > Cnnectins ptimizer and uncheck the bx. 1. At the Welcme screen, fllw the nscreen instructins t cmplete setup fr each tpic. Tap Next, r the right arrw, t mve thrugh the steps. Yu can skip ptins t cntinue t the next ne. During setup, yu may see these ptins: Language: Chse the default language fr yur phne s peratin. Accessibility: Cnfigure settings t access settings t imprve the accessibility f yur phne s features if yu are visually impaired r hard f hearing. Wi-Fi: By default, yur phne prmpts yu t use Wi-Fi when accessing data services. Tap a Wi-Fi access pint t cnnect t it, r yu can cntinue setup using yur phne s cnnectin t the wireless netwrk. 16 Gt Ggle?: Yur phne uses yur Ggle Accunt t prvide access t many features and apps. Cmplete the steps t sign in t yur current Ggle Accunt, r sign up fr a new Ggle Accunt right frm yur phne. Yu can als skip signing in t yur Ggle Accunt, r sign in later. Ggle and yur lcatin: Select Ggle lcatin service preferences. This phne belngs t: Enter yur First and Last name, t persnalize features and apps. Samsung accunt: Sme apps and features use yur Samsung accunt. Sign in t yur Samsung accunt, r fllw the prmpts t create a new accunt. Drpbx: Drpbx prvides Web-based clud strage, s yu can save yur phts and vides. Yu can create a new accunt here, r sign in t yur existing Drpbx accunt. Learn abut key features: Tap a feature t learn abut it, and tap the OFF/ON switch beside a feature t turn it n r ff. Device name: Yur device name is hw yu and ther devices identify yur phne, such as when sharing via Bluetth r Wi-Fi Direct. If yu want t use a different name, tap the field and enter a name. 2. Tap Finish t cmplete setup. Yu may see a series f infrmatinal r update screens. Fllw the prmpts t cntinue. Set Up Vic Yu shuld set up yur vic and persnal greeting as sn as yur phne is activated. Always use a passwrd t prtect against unauthrized access. Yur phne autmatically transfers all unanswered calls t yur vic , even if yur phne is in use r turned ff. 1. Tuch > Phne > Keypad tab. If yur screen is lcked, press the Pwer/Lck Key t turn n the display and then swipe yur screen in any directin. See Turn Yur Screen On and Off. 2. Tuch and hld t dial yur vic number. 3. Fllw the system prmpts t: Create yur passwrd. Recrd yur name annuncement. Recrd yur greeting. Imprtant: It is strngly recmmended that yu create a passwrd when setting up yur vic t prtect against unauthrized access. Accunt User Name and Passwrd If yu are the accunt wner, yu will create an accunt user name and passwrd when yu sign n t sprint.cm/mysprint. If yu are nt the accunt wner (if smene else receives the bill fr yur Sprint service), yu can get a sub-accunt passwrd at sprint.cm/mysprint. Yu can get up t three pieces f infrmatin per call, and the peratr can autmatically cnnect yur call at n additinal charge. 19 Phne Basics Yur phne is packed with features that simplify yur life and expand yur ability t stay cnnected t the peple and infrmatin that are imprtant t yu. The fllwing tpics will intrduce the basic functins and features f yur phne. Yur Phne s Layut The fllwing illustratin utlines yur phne s basic layut. Key Functins The fllwing list defines the features listed in the abve illustratins. Frnt f Phne LED indicatr displays red when charging, green when fully charged, blue when pwering up, and range when a ntificatin has arrived. Earpiece lets yu hear the caller and autmated prmpts during calls. Prximity Sensr detect the presence f bjects near the phne, such as when using mtin settings. Fr example, while talking n the phne, the sensr detects when it s near yur ear and turns ff the screen t prevent accidental key presses. Light Sensr detects the ambient light level, such as when setting screen brightness when Autmatic brightness is enabled, and when using the Camera. Frnt Camera allws yu t take pictures and vides f yurself. Phne Basics 9

20 Pwer/Lck Key lets yu turn the phne n r ff, turn the screen n r ff, r lck the screen. Press and hld fr a Device ptins menu. Optins include Pwer ff, Airplane mde, and Restart. Yu can als quickly switch t Mute, Vibrate, and Sund. Back Key lets yu return t the previus screen, r clse a dialg bx, ptins menu, the Ntificatin Panel, r nscreen keybard. Hme Key returns yu t the Hme screen. Press and hld t pen the recently used applicatins windw, and access Task Manager and Ggle Search. Menu Key allws yu t access a menu frm mst f yur phne s screens. Vlume Key adjusts the vlume f yur phne s sunds. Frm the Hme screen, press t adjust master vlume. During calls r playback, press t adjust vlume. Press t mute the ringtne f an incming call. Back f Phne Micrphnes allw callers t hear yu when yu are using the speakerphne, as well as capture sund during recrding. 3.5 mm Headset Jack allws yu t plug in either a stere headset r an ptinal headset fr cnvenient, hands-free cnversatins. Camera lets yu take pictures and recrd vides. Flash helps illuminate subjects in lw-light envirnments when the camera is fcusing and capturing a pht r vide. USB Charger/Accessry Prt allws yu t cnnect the phne charger/usb cable (included) and ther ptinal accessries (nt included). Speaker plays ringtnes and sunds. The speaker als lets yu hear the caller s vice in speakerphne mde. Cver Release allws yu t lift the cver frm the back f yur phne. Infrared Transmitter cntrls external devices such as TVs. CAUTION! Inserting an accessry int the incrrect jack may damage the phne. Turn Yur Phne On and Off The instructins belw explain hw t turn yur phne n and ff. Turn Yur Phne On Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key. 21 Turn Yur Phne Off 1. Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key t pen the Device ptins menu. 2. Tuch Pwer ff > OK t turn the phne ff. Yur screen remains blank while yur phne is ff (unless the battery is charging). Turn Yur Screen On and Off Yur phne allws yu t quickly turn the screen ff when nt in use and t turn it back n and unlck it when yu need it. Turn the Screen Off When Nt in Use T quickly turn the screen ff, press the Pwer/Lck Key. T save battery pwer, the phne autmatically turns ff the screen after a certain perid f time when yu leave it idle. Yu will still be able t receive messages and calls while the phne s screen is ff. Nte: Fr infrmatin n hw t adjust the time befre the screen turns ff, see Screen Timeut. Turn the Screen On and Unlck It 1. T turn the screen n, press the Pwer/Lck Key. 2. Swipe the screen in any directin t unlck the screen. If yu are using the default lck screen, yu can drag the Camera icn t launch the camera, right frm the lck screen. If yu have set up a screen lck, yu will be prmpted t draw the pattern r enter the passwrd r PIN. Fr mre infrmatin, see Lck Screen. Tuchscreen Navigatin Yur phne s tuchscreen lets yu cntrl actins thrugh a variety f tuch gestures. Tuch When yu want t type using the n-screen keybard, select items n-screen such as applicatin and settings icns, r press n-screen buttns, simply tuch them with yur finger. Phne Basics 11

22 Tuch and Hld T pen the available ptins fr an item (fr example, a cntact r link in a Web page), tuch and hld the item. Swipe r Slide T swipe r slide means t quickly drag yur finger vertically r hrizntally acrss the screen. Phne Basics 12

23 Drag T drag, tuch and hld yur finger with sme pressure befre yu start t mve yur finger. While dragging, d nt release yur finger until yu have reached the target psitin. Flick Flicking the screen is similar t swiping, except that yu need t swipe yur finger in light, quick strkes. This finger gesture is always in a vertical directin, such as when flicking the cntacts r Phne Basics 13

24 message list. Pinch and Spread "Pinch" the screen using yur thumb and frefinger t zm ut r "spread" the screen t zm in when viewing a picture r a Web page. (Mve fingers inward t zm ut and utward t zm in.) Tip: Pinching any Hme screen will let yu see thumbnails f all seven Hme screens. Tuch a thumbnail t g straight t anther Hme screen. Phne Basics 14

25 Rtate Fr mst screens, yu can autmatically change the screen rientatin frm prtrait t landscape by turning the phne sideways. When entering text, yu can turn the phne sideways t bring up a bigger keybard. Nte: Screen rtatin needs t be enabled fr the screen rientatin t autmatically change. Tuch > > Settings > My Device tab > Display > Aut rtate screen. See Aut Rtate Screen fr mre infrmatin. Tip: Yu can als access the screen rtatin setting frm the Ntificatins screen. Pull dwn the Ntificatins bar and tuch Screen rtatin t enable the ptin. Yur Hme Screen The hme screen is the starting pint fr yur phne s applicatins, functins, and menus. Yu can custmize yur hme screen by adding applicatin icns, shrtcuts, flders, widgets, and mre. Yur hme screen extends beynd the initial screen. Swipe the screen left r right t display additinal screens. Nte: Yu can keep swiping in ne directin t mve thrugh all the hme screens, back t the hme screen. The small dts tward the bttm f the screen let yu knw yur current screen psitin. Phne Basics 15

Call Using the Phne Dialer The mst traditinal way t place a call is by using the phne s dialer screen. 1. Press and tuch Phne > Keypad tab. 2. Tuch the number keys n the dial pad t enter the phne number. As yu enter digits, Smart Dial searches fr cntacts that match. Get Started with Cntacts Yur phne autmatically srts the Cntacts entries alphabetically. Yu can create a Ggle cntact, a phne cntact, r a Crprate (Micrsft Exchange ActiveSync) cntact. Phne cntacts are stred lcally n the phne. Nte: If the phne is ever reset t its factry default parameters, lcally stred cntacts (phne cntacts) can be lst. Ggle cntacts are shared with yur existing Ggle Accunt and can als be imprted t yur phne after yu have created a Ggle Mail accunt. Micrsft Exchange ActiveSync cntacts are shared with a Micrsft Exchange accunt. Access Cntacts Yu can access cntacts frm the Cntacts app. Press and tuch Cntacts. When yu select an pen netwrk, yu will be autmatically cnnected t the netwrk. When yu select a secured netwrk, yu will need t enter the wireless passwrd t cnnect t the netwrk. Enter the passwrd and tuch Cnnect. Yu can use the shw passwrd ptin t display the passwrd as yu enter it. Manually Add a New Netwrk Cnnectin 1. Press and then tuch > Settings > Cnnectins tab. 2. Tuch OFF/ON t turn Wi-Fi n, then tuch Wi-Fi. 3. Tuch Add Wi-Fi netwrk. 4. Enter the Netwrk SSID. This is the name f yur Wi-Fi netwrk. 5. Tuch the Security field and select a security ptin. This must match the current security setting n yur target netwrk. 6. Tuch Cnnect t stre the new infrmatin and cnnect t the Wi-Fi netwrk. Bluetth Bluetth is a shrt-range cmmunicatins technlgy that allws yu t cnnect wirelessly t a number f Bluetth devices, such as headsets and hands-free car kits, and Bluetth-enabled handhelds, cmputers, printers, and wireless devices. The Bluetth cmmunicatin range is usually apprximately 30 feet. Turn Bluetth On r Off The fllwing prcedure will shw yu hw t turn Bluetth n and ff. Nte: Turn ff Bluetth when nt in use t cnserve battery pwer, r in places where using a wireless device is prhibited, such as abard an aircraft and in hspitals. 1. Press and then tuch > Settings > Cnnectins tab. 2. Tuch OFF/ON t turn Bluetth n r ff. Tip: Yu can als turn Bluetth n and ff thrugh the Ntificatin Panel. 88 Cnnect a Bluetth Headset r Car Kit Yu can listen t music ver a Bluetth stere headset, r have hands-free cnversatins using a cmpatible Bluetth headset r car kit. It s the same prcedure t set up stere audi and handsfree devices. T listen t music with yur headset r car kit, the headset r car kit must supprt the A2DP Bluetth prfile. 1. Press and then tuch > Settings > Cnnectins tab. 2. Tuch OFF/ON t turn Bluetth n, then tuch Bluetth. 3. Make sure that the headset is discverable, s that yur phne can find the headset. Refer t the instructins that came with the headset t find ut hw t set it t discverable mde. 4. Tuch Scan. Yur phne will start t scan fr Bluetth devices within range. 5. When yu see the name f yur headset displayed in the Available devices sectin, tuch the name. Yur phne then autmatically tries t pair with the headset. 6. If autmatic pairing fails, enter the passcde supplied with yur headset. The pairing and cnnectin status is displayed belw the hands-free headset r car kit name in the Bluetth devices sectin. When the Bluetth headset r car kit is cnnected t yur phne, (Bluetth cnnected) displays in the Status bar. Depending n the type f headset r car kit yu have cnnected, yu can then start using the headset r car kit t listen t music r make and receive phne calls. Nte: Due t different specificatins and features f ther Bluetth-cmpatible devices, display and peratins may be different, and functins such as transfer r exchange may nt be pssible with all Bluetth-cmpatible devices. Recnnect a Headset r Car Kit When yu have paired a headset with yur phne, yu shuld be able t recnnect it autmatically by turning n Bluetth n yur phne and then turning n the headset. Hwever, smetimes yu will need t recnnect manually, such as when yu have been using yur headset with anther Bluetth device. 1. Press and then tuch > Settings > Cnnectins tab. 2. Set a Screen Lck Befre setting up a VPN, yu must set a screen lck t prevent access t yur phne by unauthrized users. Chse a PIN r Passwrd screen lck, and then fllw the prmpts t cnfigure the screen lck. Fr mre infrmatin, see Lck Screen. This phne supprts micrsd and micrsdhc cards f up t 64GB capacity. Install a Memry Card Use the fllwing prcedure t install an ptinal memry card (nt included) in yur phne. 1. Remve the back cver frm the phne. Fr mre infrmatin, see Remve the Back Cver in Set Up Yur Phne. 2. T insert a micrsd card, carefully slide the micrsd card under the tp metal plate int the micrsd card scket as shwn, until the card lcks int place. 3. Replace the back cver. Fr mre infrmatin, see Replace the Back Cver in Set Up Yur Phne. Imprtant: Yu can easily damage the memry card and card scket by imprper installatin. Please be careful when inserting, remving, r handling the memry card. D nt ver-insert the card as this can damage the cntact pins. Transfer Files Using a USB Cable Yu can use the supplied USB cable t cnnect yur phne directly t yur cmputer and transfer music, pictures, and ther cntent files. Fr example, if yu have a music album stred n yur cmputer that yu want t listen t n yur phne with Music (app) r Ggle Play Music, just attach yur phne t the cmputer and cpy the files t the Music flder. 1. Cnnect yur phne t yur cmputer using the supplied USB cable. Insert the smaller end f the cable t the USB charger/accessry jack at the bttm f the phne. Insert the larger end f the cable int an available USB prt n yur cmputer. 2. Yur phne will autmatically detect the cnnectin. When appears in the Status bar, tuch and slide dwnward frm the tp f the screen t display the Ntificatin Panel. 3. Under Onging, the type f cnnectin is shwn as Cnnected as a camera r Cnnected as a media device. 4. T change the cnnectin type, tuch Cnnected as [xxx] in the Ntificatin Panel and tuch the desired ptin. Media device (MTP): Used fr mst transfers. Yu can transfer files in Windws r n a Mac.
