3 Wecome Thank you for choosing AURALiC product. ALTAIR is a perfect singe-box music source for your modern HiFi system. It combines a High-End DAC with word cass wireess streaming soution. High-End Wireess Streaming ALTAIR is equipped with AURALiC s award-winning Lightning streaming technoogy that supports DXD and Quad-Rate DSD payback through Wi-Fi network. It aso supports severa advanced features such as gapess payback, mutipe-room functions. Memory Payback, the atest feature added to Lightning streaming technoogy aows ALTAIR to fetch and cache the entire track in its on-board memory or system storage in advance, and then to pay ocay without any network data transfer needed, in order to improve the sound quaity to the highest eve. 15 Input Sources, More to Come ALTAIR functions as a home music center designed for virtuay a kinds of digita input sources. By joint-used with Lightning DS, you can stream TIDAL, Qobuz and isten to Internet Radio ivey at any time. ALTAIR s AirPay, Songcast and Buetooth inputs provide aternative ways to stream your favorite music from Appe Music, Spotify and other service providers from a smartphone or a computer. The rest of inputs incude AES/EBU, Coaxia, Tosink and USB connection designed for a Computer-as-Source system. Femto Master Cock The dua-frequency Femto Master Cock inside the ALTAIR is speciay designed and optimized for its ESS Sabre DAC chip: with one frequency for 44.1K and mutipe of 44.1K, and with another working frequency for 48K. This design makes ALTAIR to ock on with highest cock precision (equa to the VEGA s EXACT mode) at a time without dropouts. Fu Linear Power Suppy With more and more DACs at this price range starting to use switching power suppies, AURALiC insists on using high performance but costy Purer-Power inear power suppy technoogy on the ALTAIR. With this technoogy, the noisy AC power firsty goes into a power purification modue, and the DC current and noise from both within and outside audio frequencies can be reduced by as much as 90dB. Fexibe Fiter Mode ALTAIR has four buit-in fiter modes that aow users to customize sound best befitting their persona preference. Those fiter modes were deveoped from AURALiC s we known Fexibe Fiter Mode in the VEGA Digita Audio Processor, with each containing severa digita fiters optimized for a corresponding samping rate. 3

5 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS A safety and operating instructions must be read before actua operation, and retained for future reference. This product shoud be connected ony to the type of power source indicated on the back of the unit. If you are not sure of the type of your mains power suppy, pease consut your deaer or oca power company. To competey disconnect this product from the AC mains, disconnect the power suppy cord pug from the AC receptace. Do not use the product near water, i.e. near a bathtub, kitchen sink, aundry tub, in a wet basement, near a swimming poo etc. Do not insta the product near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus that produce heat. See Pacement and Cabing on page 7. Do not et objects or iquids fa into the product. Do not expose the product to dripping or spashing. Do not pace a vesse containing iquid on top of the product. 6 Warranty AURALiC offers a 1-Year factory warranty from the date of purchase that can be extended to a 3-Year imited warranty. The additiona Two (2) Years Extended Limited Warranty is avaiabe for ALTAIR. This non-transferabe warranty is avaiabe to the origina owner of the product by competing the product registration incuding the origina saes information from your authorized AURALiC deaer within 30 days of the purchase date. IMPORTANT: BY USING YOUR ALTAIR, YOU ARE AGREEING TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THE AURALIC ONE (1) YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY ( WARRANTY ) AS SET OUT BELOW. Warranty coverage incudes a parts and abors. Warranty is void if damage is due to abuse, negect or unauthorized modifications. Costs associated with the return of this product are the soe responsibiity of the owner. A repair work must be done by AURALiC or by an authorized AURALiC repair agency. Work done by unauthorized persons wi avoid any and a warranty coverage. AURALiC products are uniquey identified with a seria number (S/N) on the back of the unit. This number is required to vaidate your warranty. Pease provide your seria number if service is required. Before the product can be returned for service, an RMA (Return Materia Authorization) number must be issued by AURALiC. Contact your deaer or AURALiC for further information. Units without an RMA number wi not be accepted for service. 7 Pacement and Cabing Pacement ALTAIR shoud be paced on a soid and stabe surface with good ventiation condition. Do not insta this product near any heat sources such as radiators or other products (such as ampifiers) that produce heat. Site the product so that its ocation or position does not interfere with its proper ventiation. For exampe, it shoud not be situated on a bed, sofa, rug, or simiar surface that may bock the ventiation openings, or paced in a buit in instaation such as a bookcase or cabinet that may impede the fow of air through the ventiation openings. Ventiation Requirement ALTAIR dissipates up to 30 Watts of power during norma operation. It shoud be instaed in a space with at east one inch of cearance above, behind and on both sides of its encosure to provide adequate ventiation. Avoid pacing it directy above other equipment that produces heat. Check Your AC Mains Votage ALTAIR is shipped with its mains votage preset for operations in the destination country / region. The mains votage setting is written on the back of the unit, besides the power cord socket. Mains votage setting is not intended to be changed by the user. If it needs to be changed, contact your deaer or AURALiC. The power cord has a three-wire grounding type pug (a pug having a third pin for grounding). It wi ony fit into a grounding type power outet. If you are unabe to insert the pug fuy into the outet, contact your deaer or AURALiC. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the grounded type pug. ALTAIR MUST BE USED WITH CORRECT MAINS VOLTAGE AND PROPERLY EARTHED! 7

ALWAYS POWER OFF ALTAIR BEFORE CABLING! Anaog Outputs The baanced and singe-ended anaog outputs of ALTAIR are buffered individuay. These two outputs groups can be used simutaneousy. However, we suggest you to disconnect unused ports to avoid any potentia eectromagnetic interference induced by cabes. The ampitude of anaog outputs is adjustabe with maximum eve at about 4.4Vrms on both XLR and 2.2Vrms on RCA outputs. Pease pay doube attention NOT to short any pin of any anaog output to ground. 8

9 NEVER SHORT ANY OUTPUT OF ALTAIR TO GROUND! FAILED TO DO THAT WILL DAMANGE THE UNIT PERMANENTLY AND WILL VOID FACTORY WARRANTY! WiFi, Ethernet for Lightning Streaming The Lightning Streaming can be activated through Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. Pease refer to page 14 for detaied instruction on how to setup ALTAIR in your home network. USB Storage Input The USB storage port can deiver 5V/500mA current to power USB drive. We suggest you to use sef-powered USB drive for better sound quaity consideration. To pay music stored on the USB drive, you need to connect ALTAIR to your home network first, pease refer to page 14 for instruction. USB DAC Output When using ALTAIR as a Lightning streamer, you may connect ALTAIR to a USB DAC, making it as a digita streamer ony. To use this function, you wi need to connect ALTAIR to your home network first, pease refer to page 14 for instruction. AES/EBU, Coaxia and Tosink Digita Inputs The AES/EBU, Coaxia and Tosink digita inputs are individuay buffered. Maximum samping rate supported by these ports is 24 Bit / 192 KHz. USB 2.0 High Speed Input The USB 2.0 Input uses asynchronous transmission mode and is buffered by AURALiC's ActiveUSB technoogy to further reduce jitter effects. The USB input supports PCM signas up to 32 Bit / 384KHz, DSD streams at MHz and MHz through DoP V1.1 protoco and DSD256 through Native DSD on Windows PC with seected compatibe payback software or through other Linux based streamer. The specific driver is required for proper functioning under Windows PC system, pease refer to To use ALTAIR as standaone USB DAC on page 15. Main Power Inet Socket We suggest you to use standaone power suppy for the ALTAIR to provide isoation from other digita source components using switching power suppy. The power consumption of ALTAIR is ess than 30W, so a heavy gauge power cord is not recommended as the weight of the power cord connector may damage the power cord socket on the back of the unit. Pease doube check the AC mains votage on the back of the unit before connecting to the power. 9

As soon as ALTAIR is powered on, it wi go to seep mode. In the seep mode, ALTAIR wi ony shut-down some parts of digita circuits, keep a anaog on and the Femto cock active. The Operation Indicator (1) wi dispay at ow brightness in seep mode. Operation by RC-1 Remote Contro The ayout of buttons and key numbers of RC-1 remote contro are shown beow: 10

11 Start Work When powered on, ALTAIR wi be in seep mode automaticay. To start work, just press POWER (01) button, ALTAIR wi run sef-test and start. This operation is ony avaiabe at main screen and is disabed in menu. Adjust Voume Based on your settings, voume can be set by VOL- (05) and VOL+ (06) or DOWN (11) and UP (10) buttons. A singe press wi change voume in one step, keep pressing wi change voume continuousy. ALTAIR wi measure the ength you press the buttons and appy corresponding change acceeration, the onger the voume button is pressed, the faster the voume wi change. This operation is ony avaiabe at main screen and is disabed in menu. Input Seection Input can be seected and switched immediatey by pressing one of the IPOD (51), USB 11

12 (14), AES (17), COAX (18) and TOS (15) buttons. The corresponding Input Channe Indicator (2) wi show up at main screen. If you want to use streaming, AirPay, Buetooth and other input channes reated to streaming, pease use IPOD (51). This operation is ony avaiabe at main screen and is disabed in menu. Dispay ON/OFF Dispay screen can be manuay switched off by pressing the DISPLAY (09) button and can be re-activated by pressing any button on the remote contro. This operation is ony avaiabe at main screen and is disabed in menu. MUTE/UNMUTE Pressing the MUTE (02) button on the remote contro wi change between MUTE and UNMUTE in sequence. The voume vaue on the main screen wi fash when the unit is set to MUTE. Streaming Transport Contro When used with Lightning streaming input, the foowing function wi be mapped to the key on the remote contro: Function Remote Contro Button Pay/Pause Button 0C Stop Button 0D Fast Forward Button 0B Backward Button 0A Next Track Button 07 Previous Track Button 08 Shuffe Button 1D Repeat Button 1C Menu Operations n Enter and Exit Menu To enter setup menu, press MENU (4A) button at main screen. To exit menu at any position, press EXIT (03) or POWER (01). Any previous operation wi not be saved except for baance setting (see page 17) after an exit operation is appied. If no operation is appied for 15 seconds, ALTAIR wi quit to main screen automaticay. n Menu Item Seection and Confirmation 12

13 There are two ways to seect a menu item. The first is to use navigation buttons UP (10), DOWN (11), RIGHT (12) and LEFT (13) in any position of the menu. The aternative way is to use the number buttons 1 to 6 (41 to 46) to seect a menu item with corresponding number. To confirm the operation or enter seected menu, press OK (0F) button. If no operation is appied for 15 seconds, ALTAIR wi quit to main screen automaticay. Seep Press button #01 (POWER) on remote contro, a diaog box wi appear to confirm the operation, seect YES (by defaut) and press button OK (0F), the unit wi go to seep mode or seect NO to quit. If no operation is appied for 15 seconds, ALTAIR wi quit to main screen automaticay. You can press and hod button #01 (POWER) for 5 seconds to put the unit into seep directy without need to seect Yes as confirmation. Operation by Rotary Switch ALTAIR uses aso a Rotary Switch (7) to make a operations if you don't want to use the remote contro. The rotary switch can be rotated in cockwise or anti-cockwise order at 20 steps for a fu cyce and be pushed for confirmation. Start Work After powered on, ALTAIR wi be in seep mode. To start the unit, press the rotary switch briefy, ALTAIR wi run sef-test and start. Adjust Voume The easiest way to change the voume is to operate the rotary switch at main screen. A cockwise rotation wi increase voume and an anti-cockwise rotation wi decrease voume. ALTAIR can detect the speed of rotation and appy corresponding acceeration. At ow speed, a singe step of rotation means one step of voume change, the higher speed you rotate, the more steps of voume it wi change. Menu Operation To enter setup menu, press the rotary switch briefy to dispay the menu items, rotate the switch wi highight the seected menu item in sequence. To enter the seected menu item or confirm the operation, press the rotary switch briefy. If no operation is appied for 15 seconds, ALTAIR wi quit to main screen automaticay. Seep Press and hod the rotary switch at main screen for 3 seconds, a diaog box wi appear 13

14 to confirm the operation, seect YES (by defaut) and press rotary switch to confirm, or seect NO and press rotary switch to quit. If no operation is appied for 15 seconds, ALTAIR wi quit to main screen automaticay. To use ALTAIR as a streamer To use ALTAIR as a streamer, you wi need to connect the device to your home network and contro it through AURALiC Lightning DS contro software. Lightning DS is avaiabe for downoad free of charge in Appe App store, you wi need to have an ipad (ipad 2 or ater mode), iphone (iphone 4S and ater mode) or ipod touch (5th generation or ater mode) to operate the device. ALTAIR s streaming function wi aso compatibe with 3 rd party OpenHome/UPnP contro software or Roon, It is however the initia setup, such as WiFi network setup can ony be done through Lightning DS. Lightning DS has buit-in animated guide which wi hep you to setup ALTAIR in your home network, we highy recommend you to foow the guide to finish the device setup. Since the ALTAIR device firmware and Lightning DS are designed to update with new features from time to time, pease visit our onine support center to get atest document and user s guide. 15 To use ALTAIR as stand-aone USB DAC Appe Mac OS X or ater, specific Linux system supporting USB 2.0 audio device, and a AURALiC Lightning streaming bridges such as ARIES do not need driver instaation. USB driver is required for proper operations under a Microsoft Windows operation systems incuding Windows 7 / 8 / 10. Pease be noticed that Windows XP and Vista operation are no onger supported. You can downoad the atest version of USB drive for Windows operation system through our support website at: SUPPORT.AURALIC.COM. No driver is required for Mac OS and Linux based streamer. 16 Operation Menu 1. INPUT 1. AES Switch to AES/EBU input channe. 2. COAX Switch to COAXIAL input channe. 3. STREAM (Defaut) Switch ALTAIR to work as a streamer. 4. TOSLINK Switch to TOSLINK input channe. 5. USB HS Switch to USB High Speed input channe. 6. BACK Back to previous menu. 2. BALANCE This menu is to adjust voume baance between eft and right channe. If eft and right channe voumes are not equa, a sma icon: wi appear on the main screen at right top corner to remind you of using this option. The defaut vaue for this menu is eft = right. 3. PHASE 1. NORMAL (Defaut) Set anaog output's phase without change. 2. INVERT Invert the anaog output's phase. A sma icon: wi appear on the main screen at the right bottom corner to remind you of using this option. 3. BACK Back to previous menu 4. FILTER 1. PRECISE (defaut) PRECISE offers best measurement performance with fat frequency response we extended to trebe. This mode has very sma in-band rippe and best stopband attenuation performance. PRECISE is best for the payback of orchestra 16

17 music. 2. DYNAMIC DYNAMIC exhibits a genter ro-off curve of frequencies; it maintains great inband, stop-band performance whie trades off sma attenuation at trebe. DY- NAMIC is best for the payback of ight jazz, chamber music and piano soo. 3. BALANCE BALANCE is designed to minimize the 'pre-ringing' and 'echo' effects. As a resut, this mode sounds very smooth. However, due to the sow ro-off at high frequency, it may ose some detais in trebe for certain kinds of music. BALANCE is best for voca, jazz and pop music. 4. SMOOTH A fiters in this mode are designed to optimize the subjective istening experience at maximum. By using minimum phase design, there is no 'pre-ringing' effect in this mode, the 'echo' effect is aso been reduced as much as possibe SMOOTH is the 'a-best' option for music enjoyment. 5. BACK Back to previous menu. 5. SYSTEM 1. VOL.MOD 1. MASTER A input channes wi use same voume setting. Defaut voume at first use is 20 (-40dB). 2. INDVDL (defaut) Each input channe has its own voume setting. When you switch to new input channe, ALTAIR wi fade in sowy to avoid sudden oud sound. Defaut voume for every input channe is 20(-40dB). 3. BACK Back to previous menu. 2. DISPLAY 1. KEEP ON (defaut) Dispay wi keep on ti manuay switch off by remote contro. Dispay wi ight again by any button on the remote contro or the rotary switch. 2. AUTO OFF The dispay switches off automaticay after 15 seconds without any operation. And it wi ight again by any button on the remote contro or the rotary switch. 3. DIM Set dispay brightness to ow. 4. NORMAL (defaut) Set dispay brightness to midde. 17

18 5. BRIGHT Set dispay brightness to high. 6. BACK Back to previous menu. 3. REMOTE 1. VOL- / + (Defaut) Use VOL- or VOL+ on the remote contro to set the voume. 2. DOWN / UP Use DOWN or UP button on the remote contro to set the voume. Since TAU- RUS PRE (our baanced preampifier) uses VOL- or VOL+ to contro the voume, this setting separates voume operations from different units. 3. BACK Back to previous menu. 4. RESET Erase a user's settings, restore to factory defauts. A warning message wi be dispayed before the operation is processed. 5. NEXT Go to SYSTEM menu page BACK Back to previous menu. 6. SYSTEM (PAGE 2) 1. WIFI AP By using this operation, ALTAIR wi create a WiFi network named AURALiC- Lightning. By joining this network, you can connect to ALTAIR using Lightning DS to contro ALTAIR join particuar home WiFi network or Ethernet. A warning message wi be dispayed before the operation is processed. 2. NETWORK Dispay ALTAIR s current network connection status such as connection type, IP address, WiFi network name and etc. 3. 19 Maintenance & Service Maintenance ALTAIR does not require reguar maintenance under norma use situation. However, there are a few things that wi hep to keep it in good operating and cosmetic conditions: Ceaning Ony cean the encosure with a soft, dry coth. Extended Non-use Disconnect ALTAIR from mains power when it wi be eft unattended or unused for an extended period of time. Service If your ALTAIR encounters a probem, contact your deaer or AURALiC. Do not void the warranty by aowing unauthorized personne for repair attempt. Do not attempt to service the product yoursef. Opening the cover may expose you to dangerous votage, as we as void the warranty. Before ALTAIR can be returned for service, an RMA (Return Materia Authorization) number must be issued by AURALiC. 20 Troubeshooting No Power Make sure the power cord is connected to both the AC mains connector and an AC wa outet. Try to change for another power cord. Check the AC mains votage indication on the back of the unit and see if it corresponds to your oca power votage. No Sound or Low Output Examine a cabes to ensure a soid connection between the ALTAIR and associated components. If you are using the USB port, make sure the payback software s voume is set to an audibe eve and not muted. Make sure a associated components are powered on. Make sure the associated components connected to the seected input has an audibe output signa. Try rebooting the ALTAIR (power off the ALTAIR, then power on again). Distorted or Partia Sound Check the output cabes between the ALTAIR and the preampifiers / power ampifiers / active oudspeakers, make sure a are we connected. Make sure that a speaker connections are tight and that no stray strands of wire shorting exist within the speaker terminas. Try rebooting the ALTAIR (power off the ALTAIR, then power on again). Noise / Hum Check the output cabes between the ALTAIR and associated components, make sure a connections are we done. Make sure the output cabes between the ALTAIR and the power ampifiers are not setted near any AC cabes, power transformers, or other EMI inducing devices. It may be hepfu to pug a associated components into the same AC circuit in order to share a common ground. 20
