3 The ngenius Instrumentation Overview is designed to provide background information on Remote Monitoring (RMON) and on setting up NetScout probes. This guide addresses the foowing: Key monitoring device concepts, refer to page 1 Overview of device setup process, refer to page 4 Contacting NetScout Systems, refer to page 7 Before you begin using ngenius, you shoud understand how the ngenius performance management system, NetScout probes, and the network a interact to refect a current picture of a network activity and traffic. The foowing diagram shows an exampe of a monitored network. CSU/DSU ngenius Management Station Router Monitor Segment Manage and Communicate Statistics (Manage interface has an IP address to communicate with ngenius) In a monitored network, the monitoring device (probe or switch) coects data on behaf of the ngenius performance management system. The monitoring device summarizes traffic into a variety of types of statistics, which coud incude the amount of traffic seen on the network in a seven Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) ayers. The coected statistics dispay in rea-time views and are avaiabe in a database for 31 days. To coect the statistics, ngenius supports many types of devices that impement RMON (Remote MONitoring) agents. These devices incude but are not imited to: Probes that coect statistics on behaf of Ethernet, Token Ring, Fast Ethernet, HSSI, FDDI, WAN, ATM, and Frame Reay topoogies. 1

4 Frame Reay probes can discover activity associated with individua DLCIs, which can hep you manage trunks, verify CIR avaiabiity, and isoate fauts on WAN inks. NetScout muti-port probes can aso monitor virtua interfaces such as Fast EtherChanne inks, ATM PVCs, and VLANs. Switches that coect port, FEC and VLAN statistics, Mini-RMON, and in some cases RMON1 and RMON2 statistics. To accuratey refect a activity present in enterprise networks, switch definitions et ngenius examine individua switch ports. The spanning feature ets you appy fu RMON anaysis to port traffic by mirroring the desired port to the port where a probe is attached. With spanning, you can appy NetScout monitoring and troubeshooting resources exacty when and where they are needed. After you gain access to the probe through ngenius, you can then assign goba settings and tempates to the device. Goba settings contro the type of information that monitoring devices coect regarding your network. Tempates contro the range of information to be ogged to the database. Tempates can aso manage the impementation of aarms and short- and ong-term history. Goba Settings and Tempates in ngenius te devices what to coect, when to coect it, and what portion to og to the database. Probe Coected information incudes: Amount of traffic generated per protoco and appication Logging per RMON eve Devices communicate with NetScout network management stations via Simpe Network Management Protoco (SNMP) commands. A NetScout monitoring devices impement the RMON1 and RMON2 standard MIB for storing statistics. ngenius uses SNMP to po monitoring devices for information. The RMON standard ets technoogy from many different vendors work together seamessy to monitor your network. 2

5 RMON statistics are the basis for a ngenius appications. You can aways be assured that the RMON data coected, retrieved, and dispayed by ngenius accuratey refects the state of your network. Statistics dispay in ngenius based on a ayers defined in the seven-ayer OSI mode. The groups that make up the RMON1 MIB are: Statistics History Aarm Host HostTopN Matrix Fiter Capture Event TokenRing RMON2 groups incude: ProtocoDir ProtocoDist AddressMap NHost NMatrix AHost AMatrix UsrHistory ProbeConfig RMON standards are very powerfu because they hep you remotey monitor the traffic on your network. Mini-RMON is a subset of the RMON1 standard, and it is made up of these MIB groups: Statistics, History, Events, and Aarms. Mini-RMON is often embedded in switches. NetScout Systems offers numerous extensions to the RMON standards, aowing you to use ngenius with popuar network topoogies and configurations, incuding Fast Ethernet, Frame Reay, HSSI, FDDI, NetFow, Fast EtherChanne, ATM, T1/E1, and Channeized T1/E1. 3

6 If you aready have monitoring devices (probes or switches) set up on your network, turn to the ngenius Instaation Guide and get started instaing the ngenius performance management system. If you need to set up monitoring devices on your network, this section provides an overview of device setup procedures. Before you set up your system s probes, you shoud be aware of the foowing information about connection and configuration. For more information, refer to the NetScout Probe Agent Administrator Guide and the NetScout Probe Hardware Guide. A communications with the probe pass through the probe management interface. In the most typica depoyment, one of the probe s LAN network interface cards is the management interface. The probe gathers information about the network using the probe monitor interface. The type of cabe to use for this connection depends on the probe type. For information on choosing the appropriate cabe, refer to the NetScout Probe Hardware Guide. You need to have a nu-modem seria cabe. Attach one end of the seria cabe to the probe s seria port, and attach the other end of the seria cabe to the oca ASCII termina. You shoud aso know the IP address of the ngenius management station. Probe Setup Procedure 1 Unpack the probe, attach the power cord to the probe, and pug the other end of the cord into your power source. 2 Connect the probe s management port (Ethernet or Token Ring) to a network segment. 3 Connect any tap(s) suppied by NetScout Systems into the probe monitor interface(s). 4 Connect the probe or tap to the network ink you want to monitor. 5 Use a nu-modem cabe to connect an ASCII termina to the probe s Consoe port. 6 Turn on the ASCII termina. 4

7 7 Turn on the probe and ensure that the red faut ight on the LCD pane is off. 8 Ensure that the termina parameters use the foowing settings: Baud Rate 9600 bps Bits per character 8 Stop Bit 1 Parity No (N) 9 Press any key to access the Agent Configuration Utiity menu. 10 Assign the foowing information to the probe using the Agent Configuration Utiity menu: IP address Net mask Gateway address Read and write community names For more information, refer to the NetScout Probe Agent Administrator Guide. 11 Using the same menu, enter the IP address of the ngenius management station as the server address. (The device uses this address to reoad its configuration fies whenever it is reset.) 12 If you pan to use a probe agent software option and the probe you are using contains agent hardware that is earier than version 4.7, insta the icense of that software option. Refer to the documentation that accompanied the software option coupon. 13 On WAN probes, configure the foowing in the agent menu for each monitor interface on the probe: Seect Interface [8] and set the type of interface. (On a probes with mutipe interfaces, monitor interfaces are numbered 3 and higher.) Seect Encapsuation [7] and set it to your desired encapsuation type. Seect Interface Speed [6] and ensure that the network speed setting matches that of the segment to be monitored. If the WAN segment does not utiize a Frame Reay management protoco such as LMI or Annex D, seect which DLCIs you want to monitor. If the segment does utiize Frame Reay management protoco, DLCI interface creation is automated. For more information refer to DLCI Virtua Interfaces on WAN Probes in the NetScout Probe Agent Administrator Guide. 14 In Agent Configuration Utiity menu, seect Reset Agent [12]and confirm your choice [y]. The probe reboots. Your changes take effect. 5
