1 Overview The Equinox SuperSeria TM Technoogy (SST) Expandabe I/O Subsystem is a High-speed Seria Communications Mutipe Port product. It consists of severa different moduar components configured in a variety of combinations to satisfy most appications. The various components are: Adapter Card Expansion Modues Modem Poo Expansion Chassis Adapter Card The SST Adapter Card (see Figure 1-1) occupies a sot in the host computer and provides the inteigent communications functions to "off-oad" the CPU seria communications processing tasks. Adapter cards are avaiabe for PCI, ISA, EISA and Micro Channe bus systems and can support up to 128 ports using externa Expansion Modues. A SST Adapter Cards consist of either one or two SuperSeria Processors (SSPs) for controing the fow of data through mutipe communication ports. Figure 1-1 iustrates an SST Adapter Card containing two SSPs. This adapter card is capabe of controing the operation of up to 128 SST ports. SST 64 adapter cards contain one Figure 1-1. 10 Each SST Adapter Card incudes software drivers and instaation manuas for Microsoft Windows, Nove, DOS and UNIX operating systems on a CD ROM. EISA and Micro Channe machines must run their setup utiity whenever an Adapter Card is added or removed from the computer. See your system documentation on how to run these utiities. Equinox EISA (.cfg) and Micro Channe (.adf) fies can be found in the disk 1 directory of the CD ROM. When booted, PCI bus systems automaticay identify and configure a PCI devices connected in the system. Equinox ISA Based Host Controers can be set to either specific I/O addresses or Pug and Pay mode. Expansion Modues Periphera devices (Such As Terminas, Printers, Modems, Bar Code Readers, Cash Registers, etc.) are connected to Expansion Modues ocated outside of the computer system. Expansion Modues are connected to the SST Adapter Card residing in the system via an Expansion Bus. The Expansion Bus provides signas from the SST Adapter Card to the Expansion Modues. The 64-port SST Adapter Cards have a singe Expansion Bus accommodating from one to four Expansion Modues. The 128-port SST Adapter Cards have dua Expansion Buses, accommodating from one to four Expansion Modues on each bus, for a tota of up to eight Expansion Modues. A basic 16-port configuration is shown in Figure 1-2. Figure 1-2. Adapter Card - Host Cabe - Expansion Modue Overview 1-3

A 4-foot (1.2m) Host Cabe is suppied for connecting the Expansion Modue(s) to the Adapter Card. Two Host Cabes are suppied with each 128-port Adapter Card. Mutipe Expansion Modues mate together to permit simpe expansion of the entire system without disassembing the computer. A variety of Expansion Modues are avaiabe. Any choice of Expansion Modues may be freey intermixed on an Expansion Bus with a maximum of four Expansion Modues per bus (see Figure 1-3). Figure 1-3. Adapter Card - Host Cabe - Four Expansion Modues Port Modues Port Modues are used to connect periphera devices directy to the Expansion Bus. Both 8-port and 16-port Expansion Modues are avaiabe with a choice of DB-25 or RJ-45 connectors for RS-232 interfaces and RJ-45 connectors for RS-422 interfaces (see Tabe 1-3). 13 Expansion Bus Cabes Expansion Modues (i.e. port Expansion Modues and Mutipexer Interface Expansion Modues) may be ocated further than the suppied 4-foot (1.2m) Host Cabe permits by using Expansion Bus Cabes (EBCs). An EBC is used in pace of the Host Cabe. As shown in Figure 1-5, a group of four Expansion Modues are ocated 200 feet (61m) from the host computer using an EBC. A typica appication using EBCs is when the host computer is ocated some distance away from the wiring coset where a the periphera cabing exists. Figure Feet (61 m) EBC 1-6 Equinox SST Expandabe I/O Subsystem Hardware Manua

EBCs are avaiabe in 25-foot (7.6m) (PN ) and 100-foot (30.5 m) (PN ) engths. In addition to extending the distance between the SST Adapter Card and the Expansion Modues, EBCs may be used to extend the distance between adjacent Expansion Modues as shown in Figure 1-6. Figure 1-6. Expansion Modues Extended Distance Using EBCs The maximum distance between the SST Adapter Card and the first Expansion Modue is 200 feet (61m). The maximum distance between Expansion Modues is aso 200 feet (61m). Overview 1-7

Power Options In simpe configurations, the host Adapter Card suppies power to a Port Expansion Modues and Mutipexer Interface Expansion Modues attached to the Expansion Bus via the suppied 4-foot (1.2m) Host Cabe (see Figure 1-7). Power is provided by the Adapter Card and is passed from the eft to right through each directy mated modue. Figure 1-7. Mated Expansion Modues Draw Power from Host Expansion Modues may draw power from the host computer through the 4-foot (1.2m) Host Cabe. Host power is avaiabe to the Expansion Modues ony when the 4-foot (1.2m) Host Cabe is instaed and Expansion Modues are mated directy together. 1-8 Equinox SST Expandabe I/O Subsystem Hardware Manua

The Expansion Modues attached to the Expansion Bus (not host bus) Cabes must be externay powered using a separate power suppy (PS-4, PN ). If an EBC is instaed, this optiona power suppy is purchased separatey and must be connected to the first (eft most) modue on the Expansion Bus (see Figure 1-8). Figure 1-8. PS-4 Suppying Power to Expansion Modues By connecting the PS-4 Power Suppy to the first Modue, power is no onger drawn from the host computer. A Expansion Modues directy mated to one another from the first Modue are suppied power from the PS-4. The PS-4 can suppy power for up to four Expansion Modues. Overview 1-9

When Expansion Bus Cabes are used between Expansion Modues, a PS-4 Power Suppy is required for each Modue as shown in Figure 1-9. Figure 1-9. Individua PS-4s Provide Power to Modues Separated by EBCs Custer Mutipexers draw power from a Power Adapter, either 110v (PN ) or 220v (PN ), which pugs directy into any convenient wa outet (see Figure 1-10). It can be instaed in pace of an Expansion Port Modue or it can be connected directy to a host computer Adapter Card. Normay, the Modem Poo Expansion Chassis is instaed as a stand-aone unit. However, an optiona rack mounted unit is avaiabe. Refer to Chapter 6 for detaied information Equinox SST Expandabe I/O Subsystem Hardware Manua

High Avaiabiity Custer Feature The Equinox SuperSeria Technoogy (SST) High Avaiabiity Custer feature aows you to connect Port Modues to a second (redundant) host. Equinox SST High Avaiabiity products are the first faut-toerant Remote Access Server soutions that provide scaabe modem and other seria I/O pooing in an NT or UNIX Custering Environment. When used with Microsoft Custer Server or UNIX High Avaiabiity software, mission-critica appications that use seria devices can be instaed with the abiity to automaticay survive and recover from the faiure of a server in the custer. The ist of appicabe devices incudes Modem Poos, Point-Of-Sae (POS) Terminas, Cash Registers, Bar-Code Scanners, Teecom gear and Industria/Robotic equipment. Appication Notes: Neither the primary nor secondary Expansion Bus Cabes may be more than 100 feet ong. Port Modues must be powered by a PS-4 Power Suppy, not from the host board. Modem Poos may be used in pace of Port Modues. Mutipe modem poos must be connected with 4-foot Expansion Bus Cabes ony. The MIM-1 and PM8-DB may not be used. Overview 1-13

Instaation Each Custer Cabe (PN ) connects a Port Modue to an Expansion Bus Cabe. The gray end of the primary Custer Cabe pugs into the eft side of the Port Modue (see Figure 1-13). The back end pugs into a standard Expansion Bus Cabe: PN /8 (4 feet), PN (25 feet), or PN (100 feet). The other end of the Expansion Bus Cabe pugs into an SST Host Card on the primary host. The redundant cabe works the same way, except its gray end pugs into the right side of the Port Modue, and its Expansion Bus Cabe pugs into an SST Host Card on the secondary host Either the primary or secondary host may be active, i.e., in contro of the Expansion Bus. The designation of primary or secondary refers to the position of the host in the configuration. For configuration purposes, the primary host is on the eft and the secondary host is on the right. See the Drivers and Software options for your patform on the Equinox SuperSeria TM Software CD ROM for Custer Software instaation. Figure SST High Avaiabiity Assemby Drawing If mutipe Port Modues are used, they must be connected directy to each other as shown in Figure You may not separate the Port Modues using Expansion Bus Cabes in this configuration Equinox SST Expandabe I/O Subsystem Hardware Manua

2 SST Adapter Card Instaation & Setup The Adapter Card appears to the system host processor as memory. That is, it is a memory mapped device. A SST Adapter Cards are automaticay mapped into system memory at the time the device driver is instaed. The device driver soft-configures a adapter cards each time the system is initiaized (booted). Adapter Card Instaation Prior to instaing an ISA Adapter Card, assign the required I/O base address. This address is assigned by performing the procedure outined under paragraph heading ISA System Setup. Use the foowing procedure to physicay insta your adapter card. Aternativey, you may foow the instaation instructions presented in your host system documentation. 1. Set the host computer system power switch to OFF and disconnect the power cord. 2. Locate a free expansion sot. 3. Insert and secure the adapter card firmy into the expansion sot. 4. Repace the power cord and turn the host computer system ON. System instaation setup requirements for ISA, EISA, Micro Channe and PCI Patforms are discussed ater in this chapter. SST Adapter Card Instaation & Setup 2-1

ISA System Setup Assigning I/O Base Address This section discusses the SST I/O base address requirements for ISA systems. ISA SuperSeria Technoogy Boards must be assigned a unique I/O base address. This can be accompished by the use of ISA Pug and Pay (PnP) or the I/O Base Address Switch S1. PnP for ISA boards is not currenty supported by a Operating Systems (OS). Consut your OS documentation to determine if it supports PnP. Figure 2-1. DIP Switch Location On ISA Adapter Card If PnP is not supported by your OS, or if you are unsure, pace the PnP Jumper (JP1) in the position cosest to switch S1. This wi disabe PnP and enabe the 4 position I/O Base Address Switch as shown beow in Figure 2-2. If mutipe ISA boards are instaed in the same system, a different address must be assigned to each board. (This is automaticay accompished if PnP is utiized.) This procedure shoud be performed before the board is physicay instaed. 2-2 Equinox SST Expandabe I/O Subsystem Hardware Manua

EISA System Setup The EISA Configuration Utiity that came with your computer reserves system resources for each adapter card (subsystem) that is instaed. This resource information is stored in the CMOS of the EISA system. When your system boots, the Equinox Software Driver reads the assigned adapter card information directy from the CMOS configuration. The foowing is a genera discussion on using this system utiity. However, you shoud consut your host documentation for specific procedures for your system. EISA Configuration Diskette System resources for EISA Adapter Cards are aocated by a menudriven program provided by your computer system vendor. Usuay there is a foppy disk provided caed the Configuration Utiity. This disk must be run whenever an adapter card is added or removed from the system. Third party adapter card vendors, such as Equinox, suppy a database of configuration information containing a ist of system resources which the adapter card requires. Equinox ocates the configuration (.cfg) fies in the disk 1 directory of the CD ROM. You are prompted to put this diskette into the foppy drive when configuring the system so that the database information can be copied onto the EISA System Disk for ater use. Foow the procedures in your system documentation for the use of this utiity. (If you are aso instaing an ISA Adapter Card see the beginning of this chapter for detais on ISA I/O requirements.) You need not be concerned when seecting vaid address bocks. The EISA configuration program is designed to make sure there are no conficts over system resources. However, AIO Nove NetWare Connect, OS/2, DOS (INT 14), Windows 3.x, and BSD UNIX drivers must be configured to operate between 640k and 1M (paged). A other UNIX and Windows NT drivers shoud be configured to operate in the two to four Gigabyte (fat) range. 2-4 Equinox SST Expandabe I/O Subsystem Hardware Manua

Micro Channe System Setup The Micro Channe Setup Utiity that came with your computer reserves system resources for each board that is instaed. This resource information is stored in the CMOS of the Micro Channe system. When your system boots, the Equinox software driver reads the assigned adapter card information directy from the Micro Channe CMOS configuration. Consut your host documentation for procedures specific to your system. Micro Channe Reference Diskette System resources for Micro Channe Adapters are resoved by a menudriven program provided by your computer system vendor. Usuay there is a foppy disk provided caed the Reference Diskette. This diskette must be run whenever an adapter card is added or removed from the system. Each third party adapter card vendor (such as Equinox) suppies an Option Diskette containing a database of required system resources. The first time you turn on the computer system with the new Adapter Card instaed, an error code appears and two (2) beeps sound after the RAM is counted. This error message indicates a configuration change was performed and the machine must be reconfigured to recognize the new Adapter Card(s). Micro Channe machines require an Adapter Description Fie (.adf) to automaticay configure each adapter card instaed. The system identifies the adapter card by requesting a Programmabe Option Seect (POS) ID from Adapter Cards instaed in the computer. The POS ID for the SST-4 and SST-8 Adapter Cards is 638A. The corresponding.adf fies (@638A.adf etc.) for the Adapter Cards containing the configuration information are ocated in the disk 1 directory of the CD ROM. When configuring the system, you are prompted to put this option diskette into the foppy drive so that the database can be copied onto the Reference diskette for ater use. Foow the procedures in your system documentation for the use of this utiity. SST Adapter Card Instaation & Setup 2-5

PCI System Setup Periphera Component Interconnect (PCI) system architecture has a design feature termed Pug and Pay. This feature automaticay detects, identifies and configures the currenty instaed devices each time the system is booted. Therefore, whenever an adapter card is instaed (or removed) in a PCI system, the card is recognized and configured immediatey upon restart. Host Power Y Cabe (128 Port EISA & ISA Adapter Cards ony) The Host Power Y Cabe is incuded with EISA and ISA 128 port Adapter Cards (PN , PN , PN & PN ). This cabe provides power from the host power suppy for Modues connected to the second Expansion Bus. Connect the host power Y cabe as described beow: If necessary, remove a power from the computer. (Turn power switch OFF and unpug main power cord.) If necessary, remove (or ift up) the host computer system chassis cover. Locate a power suppy cabe connected to a component (e.g. foppy disk drive) in your host computer system. If possibe, seect the component nearest the ocation of the power connector on the adapter card. Rmove the host power suppy cabe connector pug from the seected host computer system component power connector socket. Connect the removed host power suppy cabe connector pug to a mating connector socket on the host power Y cabe suppied by Equinox. Connect the host power Y cabe connector pug to the host computer system component where the power suppy cabe connector pug was removed. If necessary, connect the other host power Y cabe connector socket to the power connector pug on the 128-port Adapter Cards. Repace the chassis cover (or cose) and restore power to the host computer system. 2-6 Equinox SST Expandabe I/O Subsystem Hardware Manua

3 SST Expansion Modue Instaation SST Port Modues are used to connect periphera devices directy to the Expansion Bus. Both 8-Port and 16-Port Modues are avaiabe with a choice of DB-25 or RJ-45 connectors. Figure 3-1 iustrates four types of SST Port Modues and the MIM-1. 46 Pease note the foowing cabing considerations: A jacks on the PM16-RJ, PM8-RJ and CMX16-RJ units face the front of the product with the key pointed down. Refer to Figure 5-8 for the moduar jack wiring orientation. Athough the port modues use 10-pin moduar jacks, the signa pinouts have been arranged such that 4-, 6- or 8-wire moduar pugs may be used. Since the receive and transmit signas (and ground) are on the inner four wires, a 4-wire connection may be made to data-ony devices. Either twisted-pair or fat moduar cabe may be used as a signa path from PM16-RJ, PM8-RJ and CMX16-RJ SuperSeria ports to periphera devices. However, twisted-pair cabes wi greaty increase the operating distance. Twisted-pair cabes significanty increase the operating distance between SuperSeria ports and periphera devices.
