2. Quick Strt for Sutron Dt Loggers The shft encoder sensor is designed to operte with wide vriety of dt recorders or other equipment. If you pln to use the RS-232 or RS-485 connection, refer to Chpter 3 of this mnul. The following sections describe the steps to connect the shft encoder to Sutron s populr dt loggers. These steps instll the shft encoder in its defult configurtion. After following these steps, you will still need to perform some dditionl setup such s setting the direction of rottion, wheel size nd current level. These steps re described in Chpter 4, Setup nd Opertion. 8200/8210 To use the shft encoder with the 8200 or 8210, follow these steps: Connect the sensor PWR IN +, PWR IN G, nd SDI DATA terminls to your Sutron 8200 / 8210 Dt Logger SDI-12 port. 8210: PWR IN+ to SDI-12 +, PWR IN G to SDI-12 G, nd SDI DATA to SDI-12 D 8200: PWR IN+ to Pin 9 of DB9, PWR IN G to Pin 7 of DB9, nd SDI DATA to pin 1 of DB9 Use the 8200/8210 SYSTEM SETUP\ENABLE SENSOR menu to turn SDI0-1 ON. If you wnt to see the shft sttus lso, turn SDI0-2 ON. Refer to the Sutron 8210/8200A Dt Logger Opertions Mnul if you do not know how to ENABLE sensors. Use the 8200/8210 VIEW\LIVE READINGS menu nd select the SDI0-1 sensor. The 8200 or 8210 will now disply the level redings from the shft encoder. Xpert/Xlite To use the shft encoder with the Xpert/Xlite, follow these steps: Connect the sensor PWR IN +, PWR IN G, nd SDI DATA terminls to your Sutron Xpert/Xlite Dt Logger SDI-12 port Xpert: PWR IN+ to SDI +, PWR IN G to SDI G, nd SDI DATA to SDI D Xlite: PWR IN+ to SDI V, PWR IN G to SDI-12 GND, nd SDI DATA to SDI-12 DATA Log into SETUP user nd go into the setup tb. Add sensor block, using the wizrd, clled SDI-12. Edit the properties of the block to ddress 0, mesurement desired (M or C). If you wnt to see the shft sttus, simply select the output 2 nd wire mesure nd log to it. Sve the setup, exit nd strt recording. Refer to the Sutron Xpert/Xlite Dt Logger Opertions Mnul if you do not know how to setup sensors. Once the system hs mesured the shft encoder, use the VIEW SENSORS tb nd select the SDI0-1 sensor. OPTIONALLY: Enter the SDI menu from VIEW SENSORS nd issues 0M! followed by 0D0! to view dt. The Xpert/Xlite will now disply the level redings from the shft encoder. 4

StlinkLogger To use the shft encoder with the StlinkLogger, follow these steps: Connect the sensor PWR IN +, PWR IN G, nd SDI DATA terminls to your Sutron StlinkLogger SDI-12 port (PWR IN+ to SDI-12 +, PWR IN G to SDI-12 G, nd SDI DATA to SDI-12 D). Use the StlinkLogger communictor to enble SDI-12 mesurement with the commnd 0M! nd SDI-12 prmeter 1. If you wnt to see the shft sttus, enble second mesurement with 0M! nd SDI-12 prmeter 2. Then send the setup to the StlinkLogger. Refer to the Sutron Stlink Logger Opertions Mnul if you do not know how to configure mesurements. Use the FORCE mesurements button to get reding from the sensor. The StlinkLogger will now disply the level redings from the shft encoder. 10 3. Cbling The Chpter describes the wiring connections needed to use the vrious communictions interfces. For documenttion of the individul pins of ech connector, plese refer to Appendix B. SDI-12 Wiring -DT Terminl Block Only three wires re needed to use the shft encoder SDI-12 interfce. The following tble contins the pin descriptions for the terminl block nd ms connector: -DM MS Connector Description Notes 1 B Power IN + Connect to Bttery or dt recorder +8 to C Power IN - Connect to Ground 2 A SDI-12 Dt Connect to dt recorder SDI Dt line The MS connector is n Amphenol A-14S-02P. The mting connector is MS3106A-14S- 2S nd its equivlents. It is vilble from Sutron seprtely. It is lso vilble with 5 foot cble with stripped nd tinned wires on the other end s Sutron Prt number RS-232 Wiring The communictions prmeters for RS-232 re: 1200 bud 7 dt bits with even prity dded s n eighth bit One stop bit Unit does not echo chrcters. Communictions progrm must be set for locl echo if you need to see wht chrcters re typed. The following tble contins pin descriptions for the DB9F connector on the shft encoder, with the corresponding RS-232 cble connections to PC. NOTE: A stndrd DB-9 mle/femle stright thru RS-232 cble should be ble to plug into PC s seril port nd into the shft encoder with these connections. NOTE: For quick bench test or configuring of the unit, opertion off of the internl bckup bttery is possible. For long term use, the unit should hve 12 Volts pplied vi the SDI-12 connector. 6

RS-485 (Differentil SDI-12) Wiring Four wires re needed to use the differentil SDI-12 interfce. Differentil SDI-12 is not defined stndrd. It is low power modifiction of n RS-485 interfce. It overcomes the cble limittion of SDI-12 since trnsmitted dt is not referenced to the power supply ground. It does not utilize power consuming DC termintion resistor. It does hve trnsient protection built in tht rises the output impednce bove the level tht is normlly encountered in RS-485 pplictions. The dt signling rte nd protocol conform to SDI-12 stndrds. To use the RS-485 interfce with non- SDI-12 equipment, refer to the SDI-12 specifiction for the protocol nd timing detils. The specifiction cn be obtined t The following tble contins the connections for RS-485 wiring. Sutron s 8210 nd XLITE re cpble of using the RS-485 interfce on the shft encoder. 12 4. Bench Setup nd Opertion This chpter will cover the configurtion of the encoder tht cn be performed on the bench, before going to the instlltion site. In generl, follow these steps to set up the shft encoder: 1. Instll the internl bttery in the shft encoder (see Chpter 6). DO NOT leve the bttery instlled during storge or if the unit is not connected to min input power, since the bttery is lwys on nd will drin the bttery. 2. Connect the Shft Encoder to your device (see Chpter 3). 3. Rotte the shft to see if the direction of rottion is set properly. If not, use the XDR commnd to set the direction of rottion (see pge 15). 4. Set the wheel circumference nd digits of precision s desired using the XWC commnd (see pge 15). The defult vlue is Since the encoder multiples the number of turns by this circumference, the disply/output vlue will be in feet if you use 1 foot wheel nd circumference of 1.0. Other common vlues for the wheel circumference re 375 (when using 375 mm wheel) or (when using 1 foot wheel but wnt the disply/output in cm). As you cn see, the encoder tkes on whtever units you use when entering the wheel circumference. If you chnge the circumference, be sure to lso set the number of deciml plces. 5. Set the current level using the XS or S0 commnd (see pge 15). This sets the displyed vlue s well s the vlue returned by the M commnd. This is bsed the current direction of rottion nd wheel circumference. Be sure to perform steps 3 nd 4 before this step. Shft Encoder Strtup Turning on/off the Disply Whenever power is pplied to the shft encoder, the 8 digit by 2 line disply will turn on nd disply the level s shown below. (Power is pplied either when the internl bttery is instlled or, if no internl bttery is instlled, when externl power is pplied.) The disply will time out nd turn off fter 5 minutes, to turn off the disply before this, simply press the DISPLAY button. Once the disply is off, simply press the DISPLAY button gin to turn it bck on. Turning on the bcklight The disply is equipped with bck light to ssist in viewing under mny different lighting conditions. To turn on the bcklight, simply press nd hold the DISPLAY button for 2 seconds when the disply is on. Adjusting the contrst The disply contrst cn lso be set to ssist under different lighting conditions. To set the contrst, simply press nd hold the DISPLAY button until contrst strts to chnge, continue holding the button until the contrst is t redble level, nd then relese the button. NOTE: If the bck light ws off, it will turn on. While the DISPLAY button is held down, the contrst will continuously vry from it's drkest to lightest settings, repeting until the disply button is relesed. 8

Lyout of the Disply The level shown on the disply is the sme s returned by the M commnd. Since the shft encoder does not trck the level when not powered up, the current level my not be correct. The disply highlights this condition by plcing n L in sttus line. The sttus line will lso show the internl bck-up bttery voltge (this tkes few seconds to updte) if one is instlled, otherwise it will be floting voltge number. If the shft encoder detects n over speed condition, it will lso plce n 'S' in the sttus line next to the 'L'. An 'L' here indictes the level hs not been set L S An 'S' here indictes n over speed condition. The indictes the level. The 3.65 indictes the bck up bttery voltge. Fctory defult configurtion The shft encoder comes from the fctory with following defult vlues: Address: 0 Operting Mode: Automtic RS-232 mode enbled Wheel Circumference: 1.0 Number of Deciml plces in Result: 3 Shft direction: Clockwise s positive. Mximum Rottion speed: 2.5 Revolutions per Second Level Offset: 0 Averging time: 10 seconds Slope for M1 commnd: To issue commnds to the shft encoder vi SDI-12 or RS-485, you will need to be connected to dt recorder, such s Sutron 8200, 8210, 8400, 9210, Xpert or Stlink Logger which is cpble of issuing stndrd nd extended SDI-12 commnds. To issue commnds to the shft encoder vi RS-232, you will need to connect it to n RS-232 terminl or to computer running terminl emultion (communictions) softwre nd to power supply or bttery. Follow the instructions in Section 3 in order to mke these connections RS-232 Automtic Reding Mode The RS-232 port supports n utomtic reding mode, i.e. when n RS-232 connection is mde (DTR sserted), the unit will strt reporting the level reding out the RS-232 port. The reported level will be sme s provided by the mesure commnd (M commnd). The output is the current level followed by crrige return line feed sequence. For exmple: By defult, the vlue will hve three deciml plces, which cn be chnged (Refer Setting Wheel Circumference on how to chnge number of deciml plces). The shft encoder continues to report Bringing the Benefits of Rel-Time Dt Collection to the World Sutron Corportion, Ridgetop Circle, Sterling, Virgini

the level once second. If the shft encoder receives commnd, then the utomtic reding mode will be disbled for tht RS-232 session nd the interction with the unit will become commnd driven, just like SDI-12. It is possible to mke the commnd driven mode the defult. (Refer Setting Operting Mode for further detils). NOTE: If both n RS-232 connection nd SDI-12 connection re mde to one shft encoder, the SDI-12 tkes priority. This mens tht during the time of SDI-12 commnd, the unit will not ccept commnds from the RS-232 port. Once the unit hs finish with the SDI-12 commnd, it will revert bck to ccepting RS-232 commnds. SDI-12 Commnds (Overview) The commnds to set up nd operte the shft encoder re those defined by the SDI-12 specifictions plus some extended commnds defined by Sutron. The commnds re in ASCII nd ll the replies use printble ASCII chrcters followed by <CR> <LF>. The cse of the letters is importnt. An A is not the sme s n. All commnds hve three components: the device ddress, the commnd body, nd the commnd termintion. The device ddress is single chrcter with vlues 0 to 9, A to Z, nd to z. It is the first chrcter of commnd. It is usully the number 0 (the defult ddress s shipped from the fctory) if dt recorder does not hve multiple SDI devices connected to it. The commnd body nd the responses re shown s combintion of upper nd lower cse letters. The upper cse letters re the fixed portions of the commnd nd the lower cse letters re the vribles or vlues tht re replced by ctul numbers. Vlues re entered in the form of polrity sign (+ or ) followed by up to seven digits, including deciml point. The commnd termintor is n exclmtion point (!). This works with both the SDI-12 nd RS- 232 interfces. With RS-232, you hve the dditionl option of terminting the commnd with crrige return <CR> nd/or line feed <LF> in plce of the exclmtion point. NOTE: ALL SDI-12 COMMANDS ARE UPPER CASE. The shft encoder replies to ll SDI-12 commnds it supports. If the shft encoder receives commnd it does not support, no reply is mde. The reply to mesurement commnd (M) will hve one of two forms: 0000 Or tttn followed by Where is the ddress nd the 0000 indictes tht there is no further messge from shft encoder to send Where is the ddress, ttt is the mount of time, in seconds, the shft encoder needs to mke the mesurement or process the commnd nd n is the number of vlues tht cn be collected. As soon s the mesurement is over, the sensor will lso respond with its ddress (if ttt is not 000). This response is clled service request. 10

Setting the Address The defult SDI-12 ddress is 0. If you re using the shft encoder connected with other SDI-12 devices, you will need to chnge the shft encoder ddress. Otherwise, skip this section. The ddress simply lets multiple devices shre the sme wiring. When the dt recorder needs dt from prticulr sensor, it requests dt using n ddress. Only the device with the mtching ddress will reply. For convenience in setting up the unit when only one sensor is connected, the shft encoder supports wildcrd ddresses of sterisk (*) nd question mrk (?). In order to set the ddress by SDI-12 commnd or RS-232 commnd, no other SDI-12 devices connected to the system should be set to ddress 0 or to the desired Shft Encoder ddress. Hint: If you do not know the ddress of prticulr shft encoder, use the unknown ddress commnd to hve the shft encoder identify itself. There re 3 forms of the unknown ddress commnd:?! *! *X?! NOTE: In order for the unknown ddress commnd to work, there should be only be one shft encoder connected. The SDI-12 commnd for setting the shft encoder's ddress is 0An! Where 0 is the current ddress of the device, n is the new SDI-12 ddress (0 to 9, A to Z, to z). The shft encoder will issue Acknowledge Active response to verify the ddress set. If you do not get this messge, try the commnd gin NOTE: The shft encoder will not respond if the commnd is invlid. As n exmple, the following commnd would set the shft encoder ddress to 5: 0A5! Subsequently, the ddress cn be set to different ddress, 9 for exmple, by the commnd: 5A9! Bringing the Benefits of Rel-Time Dt Collection to the World Sutron Corportion, Ridgetop Circle, Sterling, Virgini

Verifying the Address nd Opertion The shft encoder will respond with n identifying messge when it receives the send identifiction commnd, I. The formt of the commnd is: I! Where is the ddress for the shft encoder. The shft encoder will reply with 13 SUTRON mmmmmm1.0ssssssssvvv, where 13 SUTRON mmmmmm 1.0 sssssss Svvv SDI-12 ddress supports SDI version 1.3 commnds mnufcturer SUTRON model number will return portion of Dx model number hrdwre revision level sensor seril number the softwre revision If you do not get reply, check the ddress using?! or *! with no other SDI device connected nd mke sure you use the proper ddress for the sensor. Mking Mesurement There re four clsses of mesurement commnds: M commnds (Mesurement Commnds), C commnds (Concurrent Mesurement Commnds), MC commnds (Mesurement commnds with CRC-16) nd CC commnds (Concurrent Mesurement Commnds with CRC-16). When collecting dt from severl SDI-12 sensors tht hve long mesurement times, utilizing concurrent commnds cn shorten the complete dt collection cycle. The dt recorder cn initite the mesurement on ll the sensors nd when ech finishes, then collect the dt from ll of them. Since the mesurement times overlp, the complete dt collection cycle is shorter. There is no dvntge to the concurrent mesurement C commnd when using one sensor. In tht cse, M commnds should be used becuse the sensor issues service request s soon s M commnd mesurement is over, nd therefore, the dt recorder cn get the dt erlier without witing for the whole time. The mesurement commnd clsses with CRC-16 (MC nd CC) offer dditionl dt integrity checking over the non CRC-16 commnds (M nd C). The non CRC-16 commnds offer dt integrity checking in the form of prity nd the SDI-12 commnd structure. The CRC-16 commnds offer some dditionl dt integrity through the ddition of CRC-16. Since the CRC- 16 commnds re brnd new in SDI-12 version 1.3, not s mny dt recorders support them. In most pplictions, lck of this support on the prt of the dt recorder will not be missed since non CRC-16 SDI-12 commnds still offer significnt dt integrity checking. If the dt recorder supports CRC-16 commnds, then it is recommended to use them when collecting dt from this sensor in order to benefit from the incresed noise immunity. Exmple: (M commnd) The formt of the M commnd to the Shft Encoder is: 12

M! is the ddress chrcter nd M is the commnd to mke mesurement Most dt recorders will issue this commnd nd utomticlly hndle the reply to collect dt. You cn lso issue the commnd yourself. In reply, the shft encoder will respond with ttt2 indicting tht fter ttt seconds re llowed for the mesurement, 2 vlues cn be collected. When the mesurement is complete, the shft encoder responds with service request where is the ddress chrcter Note tht you still do not hve ny dt from the shft encoder. To request the dt fter mesurement, is the ddress chrcter nd D0 is the commnd to retrieve mesured dt. Note: the number zero follows D, not the letter O. In this cse, the shft encoder will reply with two vlues in the formt: vs is the ddress, v is the dt vlue hving formt of polrity sign (+ or ) followed by up to seven digits including deciml point, s indictes the shft sttus (0=OK, 64=level not set, 128= over-speed detected, 192=level not set nd overspeed) tht is lwys preceded by + sign The v Indictes the instntneous level vlue bsed upon the current wheel circumference (XWC), direction of rottion (XDR), nd lst level set (XS or S0). Exmple (C, MC nd CC commnds) The C commnd is used to mke concurrent mesurement. It opertes identicl to the M commnd except tht the shft encoder does not issue service request when the mesurement is complete. The MC commnd is identicl to the M commnd except tht the shft encoder dds CRC to the end of the dt. The CC commnd is identicl to the C commnd except tht the shft encoder dds CRC to the end of the dt. Other Mesurements The SDI-12 stndrd llows for other mesurement commnds such s M1, M2 etc., other current mesurement commnds such s C1, C2, etc., other non-concurrent mesurements with CRC-16 such s MC1, MC2, etc, nd other concurrent mesurement with CRC-16 such s CC1, CC2, etc. This unit mintins symmetry cross ll four clsses of commnds, tht is, it returns the sme Bringing the Benefits of Rel-Time Dt Collection to the World Sutron Corportion, Ridgetop Circle, Sterling, Virgini

informtion to C1 s it does to M1 or MC1 or CC1. The shft encoder supports the following optionl mesurement commnds: M1! C1! MC1! CC1! M2! C2! MC2! CC2! M3! C3! MC3! CC3! M4! C4! MC4! CC4! M5! C5! MC5! CC5! M6! C6! MC6! CC6! Apply M1_Slope to convert from rottions to output vlue. Returns one vlue. (Note: Use XUP commnd to set the M1_Slope) Mesure temperture (Celsius). Returns two vlues: first vlue is temperture in Celsius, nd the second vlue is 0 indicting tht the temperture vlue is in Celsius. Mesure Contrst voltge nd Bttery voltge. Returns two vlues: first one is the Contrst voltge; second one is Bttery voltge. Mesure Averge, Mximum nd Minimum level. Returns three vlues: Averge, Mximum nd Minimum level over n seconds set by XT+n! Commnd. Mesure Bttery voltge. Returns internl bckup bttery s voltge. Get time elpsed since reset. Returns three vlues: Hours, Minutes nd Seconds. Remember to issue the Commnd fter the mesurement is complete in order to retrieve the dt. Setting Operting Mode (RS-232 opertion only) The RS-232 port supports n utomtic reding mode, i.e. when n RS-232 connection is mde (DTR sserted), the unit will strt reporting the level reding out the RS-232 port. The reported level will be sme s provided by the mesure commnd (M commnd). The output is the current level followed by crrige return line feed sequence. For exmple: The shft encoder continues to report the level once second. If the shft encoder receives commnd, then the utomtic reding mode will be disbled for tht RS-232 session nd the interction with the unit will become commnd driven, just like SDI

The user cn switch between these two operting modes: Automtic reding nd Commnd driven s defult on RS-232. The form of this commnd is: XOP+m! Where is the ddress chrcter, XOP is the extended commnd to set the operting mode nd m represents the operting mode. The vlid vlues for m re: 0 RS-232 provides level reding (sme s with M commnd) every second. 1 RS-232 commnd driven by sme commnds s SDI-12 For exmple, 0XOP+0! 0XOP+1! Will mke the utomtic level reding on RS-232 s defult. Whenever RS-232 connection is mde (DTR is sserted), the encoder will strt sending level reding once second. Will mke commnd driven mode s defult mode on RS-232. Whenever RS-232 connection is mde (DTR is sserted), the encoder will not send ny level reding on it s own, unless commnd is issued. NOTE: If both n RS-232 connection nd SDI-12 connection re mde to one shft encoder, the SDI-12 tkes priority. This mens tht during the time of SDI-12 commnd, the unit will not ccept commnds from the RS-232 port. Once the unit hs finish with the SDI-12 commnd, it will revert to ccepting RS-232 commnds. Setting the Wheel Circumference The wheel circumference nd number of deciml plces to report the result re set together. The form of this commnd is: XWC+n+d! Where is the ddress chrcter, XWC is the extended commnd to set the wheel circumference, n is the wheel circumference in desired units, d is the number of deciml plces to report the result. Since the encoder multiples the number of turns by this circumference, the disply nd output vlue will be in feet if you use 1 foot wheel nd circumference of 1.0. The encoder tkes on whtever units you use when entering the wheel circumference. If you chnge the circumference, be sure to lso set the number of deciml plces in the result. For exmple with 1 foot wheel: 0XWC+1+3! 0XWC+12+1! 0XWC ! 0XWC ! Wiring the shft encoder to the dt logger Wire the shft encoder to the dt logger using either SDI-12, RS-232 or RS-485 s described in CHAPTER 3. The chssis of the shft encoder is electriclly isolted from the ground of the SDI bus. This prevents differences in ground potentil over long distnce cble runs from interfering with the trnsmitted dt. If dditionl grounding is needed, 12 to 16-wg ground cble my be ttched from the grounding bolt (using supplied wing nut nd wshers) to good erth ground. Checking the direction of rottion Rotte the shft to see if the direction of rottion is set properly (I.E. when flot rises, level increses). If the level does not chnge s desired, either turn the tpe round (put the flot on the other side of the wheel) or use the XDR commnd to chnge the direction of rottion (see pge 16). Bringing the Benefits of Rel-Time Dt Collection to the World Sutron Corportion, Ridgetop Circle, Sterling, Virgini

Checking the flot wheel size If the wheel size hs not been set, set the wheel circumference using the XWC commnd (see pge 15). The defult vlue is (1 foot wheel with 3 right digits of precision).
