2 IPM Sentry ShMM-500R and Shelf Manager Shelf Management Mezzanine: Shelf Manager Cre fr AdvancedTCA The Quickest Path t Cmpliant & Interperable Shelf Management Cntrllers The IPM Sentry ShMM-500R, and the IPM Sentry Shelf Manager that cmes pre-laded n it, are part f a series f Pigen Pint Systems (PPS) IPM Sentry ff-the-shelf management cmpnents. This member f the series prvides the cre f an AdvancedTCA Shelf Manager. The ShMM-500R mezzanine cmplies with the 67.60mm x 50.80mm SO-DIMM frm factr. It is installed in the SO-DIMM scket f a ShMM carrier bard t prduce a cmplete Shelf Manager. The carrier bard can be custmized t the frm factr and feature requirements f the shelf prducts it supprts. The ShMM-500R can be used in existing carriers designed fr the first generatin IPM Sentry ShMM-300. Fr shelf develpers, the ShMM-500R is available in an IPM Sentry Shelf Management Starter Kit (which is detailed in a separate prduct brief). The kit includes: Schematics fr a ShMM carrier bard, ready fr adaptatin t the needs f yur shelf. 3 Handles verall tracking/management f shelf The first majr respnsibility f the IPM Sentry Shelf Manager is t manage and track the FRU ppulatin and cmmn infrastructure f a shelf, especially the pwer, cling and intercnnect resurces and their usage. Within the shelf, this management/tracking primarily ccurs thrugh interactins between the Shelf Manager and the IPM Cntrllers ver IPMB-0. This missin includes negtiating assignments fr pwer and intercnnect resurces when a shelf is pwered up r dwn r when a FRU arrives r departs. This missin als includes taking actin when exceptins are raised in the shelf. Fr instance, in respnse t temperature exceptins the Shelf Manager can raise the fan levels r, if that step is nt sufficient, even start pwering dwn FRUs t reduce the heat lad in the shelf. Supprt fr redundant Shelf Managers The IPM Sentry Shelf Manager can be cnfigured with active/backup instances t maximize availability. The fllwing diagram shws hw bth instances are accessible t the System Manager, with nly the active instance interacting at any given time. Similarly, nly the active instance cmmunicates ver IPMB-0 with the IPM Cntrller ppulatin in the shelf. The tw instances cmmunicate ver TCP/IP, with the active instance psting incremental state updates t the backup. As a result, the backup can quickly step int the active rle if necessary. Three crss-cnnected signals between the tw Shelf Manager instances enhance their crdinatin: Presence: each Shelf Manager instance knws whether the ther instance is present in the shelf. Health: each instance knws whether the ther instance cnsiders itself healthy. Switchver: the backup instance can frce a switchver if necessary. ShMC crss-cnnect supprt further imprves availability In suitably cnfigured shelves, the IPM Sentry Shelf Manager running n the ShMM-500R supprts ShMC crss-cnnects s that each dedicated 1 Shelf Manager can cmmunicate with bth the Base Interface Ethernet hubs in the shelf, using the tw 10/100 Mbit Ethernet links built int the ShMM-500R. As a result, either a hub bard r a shelf manager can switch ver t its redundant peer, independently. Befre ShMC crsscnnects were defined in an Engineering Change Ntice (ECN) t PICMG 3.0 R2.0, each hub prvided a cnnectin t nly ne dedicated Shelf Manager, which meant that a switchver f either f thse functins required a crdinated (much mre difficult) switchver f bth the Shelf Manager and hub functins. Cnsistent with the requirements f the ECN, the ShMC crsscnnect supprt is fully backward cmpatible with shelves cntaining backplanes r hub bards that d nt implement ShMC crss-cnnects. 1 Dedicated Shelf Managers are implemented in specific psitins in the shelf designed fr that particular purpse, versus integrated with bards in full size AdvancedTCA slts, such as the hub bards implementing a dual star Ethernet r ther fabric. As shwn in the diagram belw, the IPM Sentry Shelf Manager prvides a rich set f System Manager interface ptins, which prvide different mechanisms f access t similar kinds f infrmatin and cntrl regarding a shelf. Sme f the interface ptins are specificatin-gverned, while thers are specific t the IPM Sentry Shelf Manager. One such mechanism is the IPMI LAN Interface. T maximize interperability amng independently implemented shelf prducts, this interface is required by the AdvancedTCA specificatin and supprts IPMI messaging with the Shelf Manager via the Remte Management Cntrl Prtcl (RMCP). A System Manager that uses RMCP t cmmunicate with shelves shuld be able t interact with any ATCAcmpliant Shelf Manager. This relatively lw level interface prvides essentially cmplete access t the IPMI aspects f a shelf, including the ability fr the System Manager t issue IPMI cmmands t IPM Cntrllers in the shelf, using the Shelf Manager as a prxy. In additin, the IPM Sentry Shelf Manager prvides tw interfaces riented twards human users rather than prgrammatic nes: Cmmand Line Interface (CLI): This interface prvides a cmprehensive set f textual cmmands that can be issued t the Shelf Manager via either a physical serial cnnectin r Telnet. Web-based Interface: This interface enables essentially the same functinality as the CLI, with access t the Shelf Manager via a web brwser. Using either f these mechanisms, the System Manager can access infrmatin abut the current state f the shelf, including current FRU ppulatin, sensr values, threshld settings, recent events and verall shelf health.
