5 System Configurtion Requirements for Using User Mnul CD-ROM The User Mnul CD-ROM Menu is softwre tht enles you to select nd view PDF Mnuls included on the CD-ROM vi your computer screen. Follow the instructions elow to use the User Mnul CD-ROM Menu. Using the User Mnul CD-ROM Menu This section descries how to use the CD-ROM Menu. When you insert the User Mnul CD-ROM provided into the CD-ROM drive, the Lnguge Selection screen is displyed. Clicking lnguge on this screen displys the following menu. (The smple screen shot shown here is for Windows users.) BROWSE MANUAL You cn red ny of the listed guides y clicking on the desired guide. After clicking on the desired guide, Acrot Reder strts, nd the PDF mnul is displyed. Cnon Font Mnger Instll Font Mnger. Font Mnger supports only English, French, Germn, Itlin, nd Spnish. c RETURN Return to the Lnguge Selection screen. d EXIT Exit the CD-ROM menu. 6 Instlltion Site Instlltion Environment In order to use this printer in sfe nd comfortle mnner, instll the printer in plce tht fulfills the following conditions. Before instlling the printer, e sure to red "Importnt Sfety Instructions" (See p. 7). Use power supplies rted for voltges in the following rnges. 220 to 240 V (± 10 %) 50/60 Hz (± 2 Hz) The mximum power consumption is 1,495 W or less. Before connecting the printer to the power supply, mke sure tht the power supply is sfe nd its voltge is stle. Use the printer in loction where the temperture nd humidity re in the following rnges. Amient temperture: 10 to 30 C (50 to 86 F) Amient humidity: 10 to 80 % RH (no condenstion) Wter droplets (condenstion) my form inside the printer under the following circumstnces. Leve the printer for two hours or more to djust to the surrounding temperture nd humidity efore using it. If extension cords must e used or plugged to multiple power strip, however, use them oserving the following points on user's own uthority. Then, unplug the power plug from the AC power outlet nd contct your locl uthorized Cnon deler. Otherwise, this my result in fire or electricl shock. Do not use highly flmmle sprys ner the printer. If gs from these sprys comes into contct with the electricl components inside the printer, it my result in fire or electricl shock. Alwys turn OFF the printer nd computer, nd disconnect the interfce cles when moving the printer. Otherwise, the power cord or interfce cles my e dmged, resulting in fire or electricl shock. Do not drop pper clips, stples, or other metl ojects inside the printer. Also, do not spill wter, liquids, or flmmle sustnces (lcohol, enzene, pint thinner, etc.) inside the printer. If these items come into contct with high-voltge re inside the printer, this my result in fire or electricl shock. If these items re dropped or slipped inside the printer, immeditely turn OFF the printer nd computer, nd disconnect the USB cle if it is connected. Then, unplug the power plug from the AC power outlet nd contct your locl uthorized Cnon deler. When plugging or unplugging the USB cle when the power plug is plugged in n AC power outlet, do not touch the metl prt of the connector, s this my result in electricl shock. CAUTION Do not plce hevy ojects on the printer, s they my tip over or fll resulting in personl injury.

10 Be creful when hndling the min ord, expnsion ord, RAM, nd ROM. Touching the edges or shrp portion of the min ord, expnsion ord, RAM, nd ROM my result in personl injury. Turn OFF the power switch for sfety when the printer will not e used for long period of time such s overnight. Also, turn OFF the power switch nd unplug the power plug for sfety when the printer will not e used for n extended period of time such s during consecutive holidys. Keep your hnds or clothing wy from the roller in the output re. Even if the printer is not printing, sudden rottion of the roller my ctch your hnds or clothing, resulting in personl injury. The lser em cn e hrmful to humn odies. Since rdition emitted inside the printer is completely confined within protective housings nd externl covers, the lser em cnnot escpe from the printer during ny phse of user opertion. Red the following remrks nd instructions for sfety. -Never open covers other thn those instructed in this mnul. -Do not remove the cution lel ttched to the cover of the lser scnner unit. Mintennce nd Inspections WARNING When clening the printer, turn OFF the printer nd computer, remove the USB cle, nd then unplug the power plug. Filure to oserve these steps my result in fire or electricl shock. Unplug the power plug from the AC power outlet regulrly, nd clen the re round the se of the power plug's metl pins nd the AC power outlet with dry cloth to ensure tht ll dust nd grime is removed. If the power plug is plugged for long period of time in dmp, dusty, or smoky loction, dust cn uild up round the power plug nd ecome dmp. This my cuse short circuit nd result in fire. Clen the printer using slightly dmpened cloth with wter or mild detergent diluted with wter. Do not use lcohol, enzene, pint thinner, or other flmmle sustnces. If flmmle sustnces come into contct with electricl prts inside the printer, it my result in fire or electricl shock. There re some res inside the printer which re suject to highvoltges. When removing jmmed pper or when inspecting the inside of the printer, do not llow necklces, rcelets, or other metl ojects to touch the inside of the printer, s this my result in urns or electricl shock. Do not throw used drum crtridge, toner crtridge, or wste toner continer into open flmes, s this my cuse the toner remining inside the crtridge to ignite, resulting in urns or fire. - If the lser em escpes from the printer, exposure my cuse serious dmge to your eyes. CAUTION Never ttempt to service this printer yourself, except s explined in this mnul. There re no user servicele prts inside the printer. Adjust only those controls tht re covered in the operting instructions. 11 The fixing unit nd its surroundings inside the printer re hot during use. When removing jmmed pper or when inspecting the inside of the printer, do not touch the fixing unit nd its surroundings, s doing so my result in urns. Consumles WARNING Do not throw used toner crtridge into open flmes, s this my cuse toner remining inside the crtridge to ignite nd result in urns or fire. Do not store toner crtridge or copy pper in plces exposed to open flmes, s this my cuse the toner or pper to ignite nd result in urns or fire. Plce the toner crtridge or drum crtridge into plstic g to prevent its toner from scttering, nd then dispose of the toner crtridge or drum crtridge ccording to locl regultions. When removing jmmed pper or replcing drum crtridge, toner crtridge, or wste toner continer, tke cre not to llow the toner to come into contct with your hnds or clothing, s this will dirty your hnds or clothing. If they ecome dirty, wsh them immeditely with cold wter. Wshing with wrm wter will set the toner nd mke it impossile to remove the toner stins. When removing pper jmmed inside the printer, remove the jmmed pper gently to prevent the toner on the pper from scttering nd getting into your eyes or mouth. If the toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wsh them immeditely with cold wter nd immeditely consult physicin. When loding pper or removing jmmed pper, tke cre not to cut your hnds with the edges of the pper. When removing used toner crtridge from the toner crtridge slot, remove the crtridge crefully to prevent the toner from scttering nd getting into your eyes or mouth. If the toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wsh them immeditely with cold wter nd immeditely consult physicin. Others CAUTION Keep toner crtridges nd other consumles out of the rech of smll children. If these items re ingested, consult physicin immeditely. Do not ttempt to disssemle the toner crtridge, drum crtridge, or wste toner continer. The toner my sctter nd get into your eyes or mouth. If the toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wsh them immeditely with cold wter nd immeditely consult physicin. If toner leks from the toner crtridge, drum crtridge, or wste toner continer, e creful not to inhle the toner or llow it to come into contct with your skin directly. If the toner comes into contct with your skin, wsh it out with sop. If you hve n irrittion on your skin, or if you inhled the toner, immeditely consult physicin. WARNING The drum crtridge genertes low level mgnetic field. If you use crdic pcemker nd feel normlities, plese move wy from the drum crtridge nd consult your physicin immeditely. 10

12 Introducing Your Print System In ddition to its stndrd fetures, listed in CD-ROM User's Guide, you cn dd the following options to expnd your printing cpilities. PAPER FEEDER PF-98B For high volume printing of up to 550 sheets in single pper size. RAM DIMMs (memory) For memory expnsion. Aville in 128 MB, 256 MB, nd 512 MB DIMMs. It is recommended tht you should use Cnon Expnsion RAM ER- 128A, ER-256A, or ER- 512A s the expnsion RAM. PS ROM A-98C By instlling PS ROM, "PostScript 3 Emultion" which mkes it possile to print with PostScript is ville. Also, y instlling hrd disk nd expnsion RAM module (256 MB or more), you cn print PDF files using the direct print function. PS/Brcode ROM A-98B By instlling PS/Brcode ROM, the r code fonts re lso ville s well s the functions of PS ROM. Hrd Disk Kit HD-98B Instlling Hrd Disk Kit HD-98B llows you to sve received print jos nd to use vrious printing functions such s the secured print function. 11

13 1 Tking the Printer Out of the Pckge nd 1 Instlling the Printer Confirming the Contents of the Box Mke sure tht ll the following items re contined in the pckge efore instlling the printer. If ny item is missing or dmged, plese contct your locl uthorized Cnon deler. Printer The following prts re lredy instlled. Getting Strted Guide (This Mnul) Drum crtridge X 4 Pnel sheet (Only for certin countries or regions) The supplied CD-ROM does not include the printer driver for Mcintosh. Downlod the printer driver for Mcintosh tht supports this printer from the Cnon wesite. If you cnnot find the printer driver for Mcintosh tht supports this printer on the Cnon wesite, contct your locl uthorized Cnon deler. NOTE This printer does not come with USB cle. Hve n pproprite one ville for the computer you re using. Use USB cle with the following symol. The pnel sheet on which the nmes of the indictors or keys on the control pnel re indicted is supplied with the printer depending on the country or region. Attch the pnel sheet to the control pnel s needed. Cnon Font Mnger is included in the [Cnonfm] folder on the User Mnul CD-ROM. 127 PS fonts for Mcintosh re included in the User Mnul CD-ROM. Crrying the Printer to the Instlltion Site After securing n instlltion site, tke the printer out of the pckge nd crry it to the instlltion site. 15 1 Removing the Pcking Mterils This printer is provided with tpe nd pcking mterils to e protected from excessive virtions nd shocks during delivery. Remove the tpe nd pcking mterils fter the printer is crried to the instlltion site. 1 Remove the tpe ttched to the printer. You will remove the tpe lter. If there is ny pcking mteril remining inside the printer, this my result in poor print qulity or dmge to the printer when operting the printer. Be sure to remove ll the pcking mterils following the procedure. The removed pcking mterils re required when trnsporting the printer for reloction or mintennce. Keep them where they will not get lost. NOTE The pcking mterils my e chnged in form or position to e plced, or my e dded or removed without notice. Dispose of the pcking mterils ccording to locl regultions. NOTE Remove the tpe tht secures the rer cover while supporting the rer cover y hnd s shown in the figure. 14

16 2 Open the front cover. While pressing the lever on the right side of the front cover, open the front cover towrd you. 3 Tilt the fixing unit towrd you. While pressing the green lock relese uttons on the left nd right side of the fixing unit, hold the ts (B) nd the fixing unit towrd you s shown in the figure. 1 (B) Before opening the front cover, mke sure tht the multi-purpose try nd the pper cssette of the printer re closed. Remove the string-ttched metl rs of the fixing unit using the following procedure. Do not remove the string-ttched metl rs when the fixing unit is not tilted towrd you. 15

17 1 4 Pull out the string-ttched metl rs of the fixing unit y the string. 6 Close the front cover. While supporting the front cover, push nd close the front cover with oth hnds s shown in the figure. 5 While holding the ts, move the fixing unit ck to its originl position, nd then press the ts on the oth sides s shown in the figure. CAUTION Push the front portion of the front cover to close it s shown in the figure. If closing the front cover y the levers on the oth sides, you my ctch your fingers, resulting in personl injury. 16

18 7 Pull out the pper cssette. Pull the pper cssette out until it stops. 8 Remove the tpe shown in the figure. 1 After lifting the pper cssette up little, pull it out while supporting it with the other hnd c s shown in the figure. 9 Remove the pcking mteril inside the pper cssette. c A pcking mteril is ttched to the pper cssette. Be sure to pull out the pper cssette nd remove the pcking mteril. The pper cssette cnnot e pulled out horizontlly. If you try to pull it out forcefully, this my result in dmge to the pper cssette. 17

19 1 Do not touch the lck ruer pd in the pper cssette. This my result in misfeeds. After lifting the front of the pper cssette up little, push the pper cssette into the printer firmly until the front side of the pper cssette is flush with the front surfce of the printer c. 10 Set the pper cssette in the printer. While holding the pper cssette with oth hnds, insert it until it stops s shown in the figure. c 18

20 2 Connecting the Power Cord One AC power outlet should e used exclusively for the printer. Do not plug the power plug into the uxiliry outlet on computer. Do not connect this printer to n uninterruptile power source. This my cuse printer mlfunction or rekdown t the occurrence of power filure. 2 Plug the supplied power cord into the power socket. 2 1 Mke sure tht the power switch of the printer is OFF. The printer is OFF when " " of the power switch is pressed. 3 Plug the power plug into the AC power outlet. Put the power cord through the concvity s shown in. NOTE The form of the supplied power cord my differ from the one in the ove illustrtion. 19

21 3 Instlling the Drum Crtridges When removing or instlling the drum crtridges, work from the left side of the printer s shown in the figure. For detils on how to hndle the drum crtridges, see "Chpter 6 Routine Mintennce" in CD-ROM User's Guide. 3 CAUTION The drum crtridge genertes low level mgnetic field. If you use crdic pcemker nd feel normlities, plese move wy from the drum crtridge. Consult your physicin immeditely. When hndling drum crtridge, hold the lue ts properly s shown in the figure. Do not plce it verticlly or upside-down. NOTE The pcking mterils my e chnged in form or position to e plced, or my e dded or removed without notice. 1 Open the front cover. While pressing the lever on the right side of the front cover, open the front cover towrd you. A drum crtridge comes in protective g. Do not tke the drum crtridge out of the protective g until the drum crtridge is redy to e set. Before opening the front cover, mke sure tht the multi-purpose try nd the pper cssette of the printer re closed. 20

22 2 Tilt the fixing unit towrd you. While holding the lever of the top cover, open the top cover. While pressing the green lock relese uttons on the left nd right side of the fixing unit, hold the ts (B) nd tilt the fixing unit towrd you s shown in the figure. 3 3 Open the top cover. Press the lue lock relese utton of the top cover. (B) Do not touch the trnsfer elt of the ITB unit nd the ITB unit cover. If the trnsfer elt is dmged, this my result in misfeeds or deteriortion in print qulity. If the print qulity deteriortes due to the trnsfer elt of the ITB unit eing touched, see "Chpter 6 Routine Mintennce" in CD-ROM User's Guide nd clen the trnsfer elt of the ITB unit. The trnsfer elt of the ITB unit is supplied with function tht clens itself, therefore, you do not need to clen the elt even when toner is on it. Do not touch these prts. 21

Remove the tpe, nd then remove the drying gent. 3 Yellow Mgent Cyn Blck 4 Tke the drum crtridge out of the pckge, nd then tke it out of the protective g. Dispose of the removed drying gent ccording to locl regultions. Keep the protective g for the drum crtridge. It my e required fter tking out the drum crtridge for printer mintennce. 5 Remove the pper cution sheet from the drum crtridge, nd red the contents thoroughly. After removing the tpe, remove the sheet. 7 Remove the pcking mteril ttched with tpe (1 piece) shown in the figure. Remove the tpe nd pcking mteril t the sme time. If the pcking mteril cnnot e removed, tilt the pcking mteril, nd then remove it c. c 22

24 8 Remove the pcking mteril ttched with tpe (B) (1 piece) shown in the figure. 10 Remove the tpe (1 piece) nd tgs (2 pieces) shown in the figure. Remove the tpe nd pcking mteril t the sme time. If the pcking mteril cnnot e removed, tilt the pcking mteril, nd then remove it c. (B) c Dispose of the pcking mterils ccording to locl regultions. 3 9 Remove the pcking mteril ttched with tpe (C) (1 piece) shown in the figure. Remove the tpe, nd then pull the pcking mteril out. 11 Remove the tpe (3 pieces) shown in the figure in order of nd. The tpe to e removed in hs nother tpe ttched to the rer end. Remove them together. 25 12 Hold the lue ts of the drum crtridge nd shke it up nd down 10 to 12 times ech s shown in the figure to evenly distriute the developer inside the crtridge. Hold the lue ts of the drum crtridge. When plcing the drum crtridge, e sure to plce pper under the drum crtridge to prevent desk or others from eing dmged y the ottom of the drum crtridge. When pulling the seling tpe out, do not hold the re ner the mouth of the seling tpe with your hnd. If the tpe is severed, it my ecome difficult to pull out completely. Do not hold this prt with your hnd. 3 Shke the drum crtridge up nd down 10 to 12 times ech s shown in the figure. When pulling the seling tpe out, e creful not to hold the drum protective shutter with your hnds. If the developer is not distriuted evenly, this my result in deteriortion in print qulity. Be sure to crry out this procedure properly. 13 Plce pper on flt surfce, plce the drum crtridge on it, nd then fold ck the t of the seling tpe s shown in the figure. 24

26 14 Pull the seling tpe (pprox. 70 cm long) out gently nd horizontlly while supporting the drum crtridge. When pulling the seling tpe out, you my feel it to e hevy. However, ecuse this is not printer mlfunction, pull the seling tpe out completely. Support this prt with your hnd. Pull out the seling tpe completely from the drum crtridge. If ny tpe remins in the drum crtridge, this my result in poor print qulity. Dispose of the removed seling tpe ccording to locl regultions. 15 Before instlling the drum crtridge, lign the tringulr mrk on the lock relese lever with the tringulr mrk of " " on the lel s shown in the figure. 3 Align the tringulr mrks. When instlling the drum crtridge, hold the lue ts s shown in the figure. If it is difficult to pull the seling tpe out y the t, hold the tpe nd pull it out s shown in the figure. However, your hnds my ecome dirty s toner is on the seling tpe. Do not pull the seling tpe digonlly, upwrds, or downwrds. If the tpe is severed, it my ecome difficult to pull out completely. 25

27 16 Mke sure tht the levers ner the drum crtridge guides on the oth sides re in the proper position s shown in the figure. 17 Instll the drum crtridges in the printer unit in order of Blck (K), Cyn (C), Mgent (M), nd Yellow (Y). Insert the drum crtridge firmly until it touches the ck of the printer. 3 Insert the projections on ech side of the drum crtridge into the drum crtridge guides s shown in the figure. If the levers re not in the proper position, the drum crtridges cnnot e instlled. Rise the levers to the proper position s shown in the figure. Incorrect position Correct position - Drum crtridge guides (left) Yellow Mgent Cyn Blck - Drum crtridge guides (right) Yellow Mgent Cyn Blck Insert the drum crtridges firmly until they touch the ck of the printer. If the drum crtridges re not instlled firmly, this my result in poor print qulity. 26

28 18 Mke sure tht the levers ner the drum crtridge guides on the oth sides re in the proper position s shown in the figure. 20 Slide the lue lock relese lever to the position of " " to lock the drum crtridge. Slide the lock relese lever until the tringulr mrk on the lock relese lever ligns with the tringulr mrk on the lel Mke sure tht the lels on the projections of the drum crtridge re visile. Align the tringulr mrks. 21 After instlling ll the drum crtridges, close the top cover. Close the top cover of the printer while holding it y the lever gently. If you close the top cover forcefully, the ITB unit cover (B) my not move ck to the originl position, nd this my result in dmge to the printer. Mke sure tht ll of the three colors on the lel re visile. (B) If you cnnot see ny of the three colors on the lel from the front, tke out the drum crtridge once, turn the projection in the direction of the rrow until it clicks nd stops, nd then reinstll the crtridge. 27

29 By pressing the portion indicted "PUSH", close the top cover firmly until it cnnot e pressed down ny further s shown in the figure. 23 While holding the ts, move the fixing unit ck to its originl position, nd then press the ts on the oth sides s shown in the figure By holding the lever s shown in the figure, mke sure tht the top cover does not open. Close the top cover firmly until it cnnot e pressed down ny further. If the top cover is not closed firmly, this my result in poor print qulity. 28

30 24 Close the front cover. While supporting the front cover, push nd close the front cover with oth hnds s shown in the figure. 25 Press " " of the power switch to turn the printer ON. 3 <14 CHK TNR/COVER> is displyed. 26 Wit for pproximtely 3 to 4 minutes until the sound of printer opertions stops. The drum crtridges re redy to e used in pproximtely 3 to 4 minutes fter the printer is turned ON. The sound of printer opertions stops when the drum crtridges re redy to e used. Wit for 4 minutes or longer fter turning the power ON. Then, see "Instlling the Toner Crtridges" (p. 30) nd instll the toner crtridges. CAUTION Push the front portion of the front cover to close it s shown in the figure. After the drum crtridges re instlled, they re redy to e used in pproximtely 3 to 4 minutes fter the printer is turned ON. For detils on how to hndle the toner crtridges, see "Chpter 6 Routine Mintennce" in CD-ROM User's Guide. 2 Open the toner cover. 4 CAUTION Tke cre not to llow the toner to come into contct with your hnds or clothing, s this will dirty your hnds or clothing. If they ecome dirty, wsh them immeditely with cold wter. Wshing with wrm wter will set the toner nd mke it impossile to remove the toner stins. When hndling toner crtridge, hold the ts s shown in the figure. The instlltion positions of the toner crtridges re rrnged in order of Yellow, Mgent, Cyn, nd Blck from the ck s shown in the figure. Be sure to crry out this procedure properly. 5 While holding the t, insert the toner crtridge into the printer, nd then push it gently until it stops s shown in the figures. Keep the protective pck for the toner crtridge. It my e required fter tking out the toner crtridge for printer mintennce. 4 4 Hold the toner crtridge so tht the t is t the ottom, nd then shke it up nd down 10 times ech s shown in the figure to evenly distriute the toner inside the crtridge. 31

33 Insert the toner crtridge so tht the orienttion of the chrcter on the toner crtridge nd tht on the toner cover mtch. Top View 7 After instlling ll the toner crtridges, close the toner cover. Mtch the orienttion of the chrcters. 4 6 Tilt the lock relese lever to the position of " " to lock the toner crtridge. If you cnnot close the toner cover, check if the toner crtridges re instlled properly. If you try to close the toner cover forcefully, this my result in dmge to the printer or toner crtridges. Do not leve the toner cover open for long time fter instlling the toner crtridge. When removing toner crtridge, tilt the lock relese lever of the toner crtridge to the position of " " to relese the lock efore you remove the toner crtridge. Align the tringulr mrk on the lock relese lever with tht on the toner crtridge. When loding pper in portrit orienttion, such s when loding A3, B4, Ledger (11 x 17), or Legl size pper, extend the pper cssette. To djust the length of the pper cssette, push up the lock relese levers gently to relese the lock, slide the pper cssette y holding the rer portion of the pper cssette, nd then push down the lock relese levers to lock the cssette. If pper is loded while the pper cssette is prtilly pulled out, the pper cssette my drop or the printer my ecome dmged resulting in personl injury. 34

36 While holding the lock relese lever of the rer pper guide, slide the guide to the mrk for the size of the pper to e loded. If the pper size is indicted on the left, lign this point to the size of the pper to e loded. If the pper size is indicted on the right, lign this point to the size of the pper to e loded. 3 Lod the pper stck so tht the rer edge is ligned with the pper guide. While holding the lock relese lever of the side pper guides, slide the guides to the mrk for the size of the pper to e loded. The side pper guides move together. CAUTION When loding pper, tke cre not to cut your hnds with the edges of the pper. Top View Align this prt with the size of the pper to e loded. Top View Be sure to check if the pper guide is t the position of the size of the loded pper. If the pper guide is set t wrong position, this my result in misfeeds. 5 If you use pper tht hs een poorly cut, multiple sheets of pper my e fed t once. ( : Feeding direction) Up to pproximtely 230 sheets of plin pper (80 g/m 2 ) cn e loded in pper cssette. Be sure tht the pper stck does not exceed the lod limit mrks (B) on the pper guides. If the pper stck exceeds the lod limit mrks, this my result in misfeeds. -When loding pper in portrit orienttion, such s when loding A3, B4, Ledger (11 x 17), or Legl size pper, lod the pper so tht the printing side is fcing up s shown in the following figures. ( : Feeding direction) 5 Attch the lel for the size of the loded pper to the pper size indictor, nd then insert the indictor into the pper size slot t the front of the pper cssette. 5 4 Press down the pper stck so tht it is loded under the hooks on the side pper guides. Mke sure tht there is sufficient spce etween the hooks nd pper stck. If there is no sufficient spce, slightly reduce the mount of pper. 6 While holding the t (B) on the pper size setting switch, lign the tringulr mrk on the pper size setting switch with the size of the loded pper.
