Yu culd recrd yurself playing music, include vicever narratin f the technique yu're using, and then shw yur student hw t read sheet music by drawing lines frm the staves t the strings f a guitar, just like yu wuld if yu were sitting in frnt f him r her. But unlike a traditinal classrm setting where yu're limited by the size f the rm and the number f students, Office Mix allws yu t teach in a virtual classrm f unlimited capacity while making each student wh views the lessn feel like yu're talking directly t him r her. T yur students, these lessns lk and feel just like vides that they can watch at their wn pace and re-watch as ften as they need. If yu add cntent like quizzes, plls, and even lessns frm Khan Academy, then yur students can d mre than just watch the vides; they can interact with them and recrd their answers t yur questins. Yu distribute each lessn by psting r embedding web address t in WebCampus. The Mix is stred n the Office Mix website. With Office Mix's analytics capabilities, yu can see which students viewed each lessn, hw they answered yur questins, and hw much time they spent n each slide. 1

2 Office Mix adds value t PwerPint In additin t all the rich features available in PwerPint, Office Mix lets yu: Recrd audi r vide narratin f yur slide deck. Insert cntent that users can interact with, like quizzes, plls, and simulatins. Recrd audi r vide f ther applicatins in actin and insert them in yur slide shw. Take a screensht f anther pen windw and insert it in yur slide shw. Preview and publish yur mix t the web r exprt it as a vide. Share yur mix with whmever yu chse and share it n scial media. Review data abut wh viewed yur mix and hw lng they spent n each slide. Publishing cmpnents Once yur mix is ready t publish, yu decide wh yu want t share it with and hw: Manage the permissins: Sharing must be Public r Unlisted t autmatically shw in yur WebCampus List Mark it as private s nly yu can see it. Share it with anyne wh has the URL t the mix but restrict access t yur rganizatin. Share it with anyne wh has the URL t the mix, prvided they sign in t Office Mix. Share it with anyne wh has the URL t the mix, withut requiring them t sign in. Share it publicly s that it's als available frm search engines and ptentially frm the Office Mix Gallery. Get a User Accunt: signup.ive.cm 2. Dwnlading the OfficeMix FREE Add-In: ****PwerPint needs t be CLOSED when yu d this.****** 3. Office Mix Gallery: Getting started Nw that yu've begun planning yur nline lessns, here are a few tips and tricks t get yu up and running with Office Mix successfully: 1. Make sure yu're using PwerPint Mst f ur cllege cmputers shuld have this versin. If yu're nt sure which versin yu're using, click File n the menu bar, and then click Accunt t see the versin number. (If yu dn't see a File > Accunt item, find ut which lder versin yu're using.) 2. Make sure yur slide deck is saved with a PPTX extensin. If yu want t start with a slide deck saved in the lder, PPT frmat, pen it in PwerPint Then click File n the menu bar, and click Cnvert:

4 PwerPint will pen the Save As dialg with the filename and PPTX extensin already filled in. 3. Use an external web cam fr higher-quality vide. Built-in cameras (and mics, fr that matter) are suitable fr mst tasks. But if yu want mre prfessinal-lking vide, invest in an external web cam. If yu're using Office Mix n a tablet r laptp and yu're inking with a stylus, an external camera and mic will allw yu t minimize stylus nise. 4. Test yur audi level befre yu start recrding. N matter hw engaging the cntent f yur lessn is, yur vide cntent is nly as gd as the quality f yur audi. D a test recrding with yur mic and adjust the vlume t find the ptimal setting. T d this: On the Mix tab, click Slide Recrding, In the Audi and Vide pane, select yur micrphne in the secnd drp-dwn list. On the slider belw the vlume indicatr, drag the square left t lwer the vlume r right t increase it. If the sund quality is pr, use an external micrphne, like Blue Yeti r Nessie, instead f the mic built int yur laptp. Even a headset will prduce better quality audi than mst built-in mics. 5. As sn as yu finish yur first slide recrding, play it back. Befre yu get t far dwn the rad f creating yur mix, yu'll want t make sure yur audi and vide sund and lk the way yu expect. S as sn as yu finish yur first slide recrding, play it back. T d this, click Preview Slide Recrding: If the audi's t sft r t lud, r if the camera isn't psitined just right, click Delete Slide Recrding. Then make adjustments befre yu re-recrd. 6. Pause briefly between slides. Anther way t segment yur cntent is by slide. If yu make ne slide recrding per slide, then it's even easier t re-recrd when yu make a mistake. If yu segment yur cntent in this way, it gives yu the pprtunity t think abut it in a mdular way. It als gives yu the freedm t add exercises at the end f each segment t check yur students' cmprehensin. 7. Use vide where essential; use audi and inking fr greater fcus n cntent and delivery. When yu create an nline lessn, yu'll want yur students t reap the same benefits frm yur teaching style as if yu were delivering the lessn in persn. If yu decide t include a talking-head vide, make sure t create gd eye cntact by speaking directly t the camera, and speak in a cnversatinal tne s that yur students feel like yu're talking directly t them. But when yu want them t fcus n the slide cntent, freg the vide and instead draw n yur slides (i.e., use inking) while talking. 8. Uplad drafts as yu g-- but clear the vide checkbx until yur final draft. Make sure t save yur wrk while yu're creating yur mix. But clear the checkbx that creates a vide versin until yu're ready t uplad yur final draft. That way, yu'll speed up the publishing prcess f interim drafts. T d this: On the Mix tab f the ribbn, click Uplad t Mix:

5 In the Uplad t Mix pane, clear the checkbx under Enable playback n mbile devices. When yu're ready t uplad yur final draft, check that bx. Hw T: Create a slide recrding What is a slide recrding? A slide recrding is a recrding f a PwerPint slide shw enhanced with audi, vide, and/r inking that yu create by using Office Mix. When yu create a slide recrding, Office Mix adds up t 3 different types f infrmatin t yur slide: A "media shape" that cntains yur audi-vide clip Ink as a bitmap Timings (nt visible n the slide) that are used during playback s that yur clips and ink strkes start and end at the right times Fr instance, the slide recrding belw cntains vide (in a media shape), inking (as a bitmap), and timings (which are nt visible): T see what a slide recrding lks and sunds like, yu can preview it in Office Mix at the time yu create it, r yu can simply watch yur mix n the web after yu publish it by ging t yur My Mixes page n the Office Mix website. Hw t create a slide recrding The easiest way t create a slide recrding is t create a PwerPint presentatin first. Then recrd n tp f yur existing slides. 1. G t the slide where yu want yur recrding t begin. 2. On the ribbn, select the Mix tab. 3. In the Recrd grup at the far left f the tab, click Slide Recrding: At this pint, befre yu begin recrding, yu shuld decide which elements yu want t recrd. T add audi and/r vide Under Audi and Vide t the right f yur slide: 1. Select the size and reslutin f the vide yu ll recrd: If yu want the vide t appear as a thumbnail, click Thumbnail. This ptin creates a lwreslutin recrding. T fill the screen with yur vide, click Full Screen. This ptin creates a high-reslutin recrding. 2. Select the camera yu want use. If yu re recrding n a laptp and yu dn t have an external camera cnnected, select Integrated Camera in the drp-dwn list.

6 If yu want t recrd audi nly, select N camera instead. 3. Select the audi device yu want t use. If yu want dn t want t recrd any sund, select N micrphne. 4. Adjust the vlume by dragging the square left (lwer) r right (luder) alng the slider. T add inking Under Inking t the right f yur slide: 1. Click the pen (Fine Pen, Medium Pen, Thick Pen) yu want t use t draw n yur slide. After yu begin inking, yu can click the Eraser t remve all f yur ink strkes. 2. Click the clr f the ink yu want t use. Yu re nw ready t begin recrding. T recrd Use the buttns in the Slide Recrding tab: Hw T: Create a screen recrding What is a screen recrding? The terms "slide recrding" and "screen recrding" sund similar but differ primarily in this way: A slide recrding shw viewers activity n PwerPint slides. A screen recrding shw viewers activity in any ther prgram n yur cmputer, including Windws itself. Hw t create a screen recrding Fllw these steps t create a screen recrding f the last prgram that was active: 1. On the Mix tab, click Screen Recrding:

On the cntrl dck at the tp f the screen, click Screen Area: The cursr will change t crsshairs: Nte that Audi will already be selected s yu can recrd vice narratin at the same time as yur screen actins. If yu dn t want t recrd audi, click Audi t deselect it. 3. Click and drag the area f the screen yu want t recrd. T recrd the entire screen, click in the tp-left crner f the screen, and drag the crsshairs t the bttm-right crner f the screen. Nte that yu cannt select an area smaller than 64 x 64 pixels. 4. Click Recrd. The cntrl dck will slide up and ut f view while yu recrd. T pin it in place, click the pushpin in the bttm-right crner f the dck. 5. T cntrl yur recrding: Click Pause t temprarily stp the recrding: Click Recrd t resume recrding. Click Stp t end yur recrding: The screen recrding will autmatically be added t the current slide after yu click Stp. Uplad t Mix Why create a mix instead f a vide file? Creating a mix by uplading it t yur My Mixes page n the Office Mix website has several advantages t exprting it a vide:

8 Yu dn't have t wrry abut it saving it lcally because Office Mix saves it in the secure Micrsft clud. Yu can distribute it easily by sharing the unique URL f yur mix. Interactive elements in yur mix remain interactive after yu uplad it. Office Mix cllects analytical data abut the mix and makes that data available n yur My Mixes page. Yu can set permissins fr yur mix t dictate wh can and cannt view it. Yu can share yur mix n scial netwrking sites like Facebk, Ggle+, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn as part f the publishing prcess, r even after the mix has already been upladed. Hw t uplad a mix T uplad a mix t yur My Mixes page n the Office Mix website: 1. On the Mix tab in the Mix grup, click Uplad t Mix: 2. In the Uplad t Mix side pane, click Next. 3. If yu aren t already signed int Office Mix, chse which f the fllwing accunt types yu ll sign in with: yur Micrsft Accunt yur rganizatinal accunt yur Facebk accunt yur Ggle accunt 4. Click yur accunt ID. 5. Indicate hw yu want the mix t be upladed: If yu are creating a new mix, select This is a new mix. Otherwise, t verwrite a mix yu already upladed, select Updating an existing mix and select the mix that yu want t verwrite. If yu als want t create a vide versin f yur mix, select Enable playback n mbile devices. Nte the fllwing: Selecting this ptin increases the uplad time. If yu dn t select this ptin, viewers will still be able t view yur mix n mbile devices, prvided thse devices are cnnected t the Internet. If yu dn t select this ptin at this time, yu can still exprt yur mix as a vide after it has been upladed t yur My Mixes page. Click Next. At this pint, Office Mix will begin uplading yur mix. 6. In the side pane, click Shw me my mix. At this pint, Office Mix will pen the Details page f yur mix n the Office Mix website. Fill in the details as fllws: 1. Type a title fr yur mix. The title will appear next t a thumbnail f yur mix n yur My Mixes page. 2. Type a free-frm descriptin f yur mix. The descriptin will appear belw the creatin data and

9 duratin f yur mix n yur My Mixes page. 3. Set the Permissin & Sharing ptins. 4. If yu want t the URL f yur mix t a recipient, click the icn at the bttm f the page t pen an cntaining the URL in yur default prgram: 5. If yu want t add clsed captining t yur mix, see Adding clse captins. 6. Click Save. Why exprt a mix as a vide? Exprt t vide is the Office Mix exprt ptin that lets yu save yur mix as a vide that cntains the audi, vide, and inking yu created with Office Mix but nt cntain any interactive cntent (apps, quizzes, simulatins, etc.). This ptin is designed fr the fllwing scenaris: Yu want viewers t be able t watch yur mix withut cnnecting t the Internet. Yu dn't want yur mix t be stred in the secure Micrsft clud. Yu want t save a cpy f yur mix lcally (i.e., n yur hard drive r ther lcal strage device). Yu want t publish yur mix n Office 365's vide prtal. Yu want t publish yur mix t YuTube. (If yu plan t make yur mix available as a YuTube vide, it's a gd idea t add the URL f yur mix t the end f yur vide s peple can enjy the full mix experience n Hw t exprt a mix t a vide If yu're already familiar with PwerPint's File > Exprt > Create a Vide feature, Office Mix's Exprt t vide feature has the same ptins with mre descriptive wrding. 1. On the Mix tab in the Vide grup, click Exprt t vide. 2. In the Exprt t Vide side pane, chse a vide reslutin frm the Chse vide size list: Fr high-definitin vide suitable fr viewing n a cmputer mnitr, TV screen, r ther HD display, select Full HD (1080p). Fr high-definitin vide suitable fr HD cmputer screens, select Cmputer & HD Displays (720p). Fr web viewing suitable and standard DVD reslutin, select Internet & DVD (480p). Fr viewing n small prtable devices like mbile phnes, phablets, and tablets, select Prtable Devices (240p). 3. In Secnds spent n each slide, type the number f secnds t wait befre the mix advances t the next slide. This setting applies nly t slides that d cntain a vide r interactive cntent. 4. Click Next. 5. In the Save As dialg, chse a filename and lcatin fr yur vide and click Save. Hw t exprt a vide while uplading a mix When yu uplad a mix (by clicking Uplad t Mix n the Mix tab), yu can create a vide versin f

10 yur mix at the same time that yu publish yur mix. T take advantage f this ptin: 1. Fllw the Hw t uplad a mix steps n the Create a mix page. 2. In step 5, select Enable playback n mbile devices bx. Office Mix will bundle the vide in a package with the mix. When viewers watch yur mix frm a mbile device (by clicking the URL that yu send them), the vide will play instead f the mix inside the mbile device's vide player. Slides cntaining interactive cntent will nt appear. Tips & tricks Remember that unlike a mix, a vide plays frm start t finish withut user interactin (except t pause, play, and rewind). Fllw these tips and tricks belw t make sure yur exprted vide plays back the way yu expect. 1. D nt use slide transitins. There are n slide transitins in a vide. T change the amunt f time that is spent n each slide, change the default value f 5 in the Secnds spent n each slide bx. 2. Expect animatins t play autmatically. If yu added animatin effects in PwerPint that start "On Click," they will play autmatically in the vide versin. 3. D nt create vides when saving interim versins f yur mix. Saving a vide versin f yur mix can be a time-cnsuming prcess because PwerPint plays the slideshw during the exprt prcess. Fr example, if the runtime f yur PwerPint presentatin is ne hur, it will take just ver ne hur t exprt it t vide. T speed up the uplad prcess, clear the Enable playback n mbile devices bx, and enable it nly when yu're ready t uplad yur final versin. Hw T: Use Interactive cntent: This is nt available yet but will prbably be in the summer!

11 What is interactive cntent? Interactive cntent is readymade cntent that yu insert int a mix and that viewers can interact with directly. Quizzes, plls, science and math simulatins, and vides frm Khan Academy are all examples f interactive cntent. They prvide a level f interactivity abve and beynd what yu can create in PwerPint alne. Hw t use interactive cntent As faculty, yu can use the interactive cntent under Quizzes and Plls as a frmative assessment, checkpints, t make sure yur students understand the material presented up t a certain pint befre they cntinue viewing a mix. Fr instance, yu can insert a quiz and determine the threshld, r scre, that a student must meet r exceed in rder t mve t the next slide. If a student falls belw that threshld, yu can suggest that he r she review the material again. Yu can als use the cntent under Vides and Apps t enhance yur lessns abut certain cncepts by allwing students t cntrl and alter examples f thse cncepts in actin. Fr instance, in a science lessn abut light and clr, students can explre the ways that changing the wavelength f a mnchrmatic beam changes the way that clr is seen by the human eye: Hw t add interactive cntent t a mix The mst efficient way t make use f interactive cntent in a mix is t create yur lessn in PwerPint, and then decide where this type f cntent can be inserted t test students' cmprehensin r illustrate a cncept. 1. G t the slide where yu want interactive cntent t appear. 2. On the ribbn, select the Mix tab. 3. In the Insert grup, click Quizzes Vides Apps: 4. At the tp f the Lab Apps fr Office bx: Click MY APPS t insert an app that yu already dwnladed. Click STORE t insert an app, which autmatically adds it t yur list f MY APPS. 5. Click the app yu want t insert t read a descriptin f it. 6. T insert the app, click Trust It. Or click Cancel t return t the list f apps withut inserting it. 7. T see the app the way yur students will see it, press F5 r click Slide Shw in the bttm-right.

12 Hw t view analytics frm quizzes and plls After yu publish yur mix, Office Mix will begin cllecting data fr all the quizzes and plls yu inserted in the mix. T view this data: G t the list f upladed mixes n yur My Mixes page at Fr each mix that cntains ne r mre quizzes r plls, click Analytics: Under the title f yur mix, click by exercises: Tips & tricks Use interactive cntent t gauge a student's prgress and cmprehensin f the material yu're teaching in a mix. This cntent is nt intended t be used t grade students. After yu add interactive cntent t a slide, yu can cpy and paste it n ther slides in yur presentatin. This methd is particularly useful fr creating questins in a quiz that spans several slides. In additin t inserting interactive cntent frm within PwerPint, yu can dwnlad apps frm the Office Stre website at and insert them int yur mix. Hwever, Office Mix cllects data nly fr thse apps that yu insert frm the Lab Apps fr Office bx that appears when yu click Vide Quizzes Apps n the Mix tab. Exprt ptins There are several ways t exprt a mix, depending n hw yu want t use it and wh yu want t make it available t. Yu access each exprt ptin n the Mix tab: Mix ptins Preview Uplad t Mix Thugh nt technically an exprt ptin, Preview lets yu view yur mix withut first publishing it r saving a ptentially big file t yur hard drive r ther strage device. It's similar t the Slide Shw cmmand in PwerPint in that it runs yur mix full-screen s yu get an idea f hw yur viewer will experience it. This cmmand is nly available frm inside PwerPint when yu have Office Mix installed.

13 Uplad t Mix publishes yur mix securely t yur My Mixes page in the clud n the Office Mix website. It cnverts yur PwerPint presentatin (PPTX) file int a rich, interactive vide with a unique URL. Yu share yur mix simply by sharing the URL, which plays the mix ver the Internet in the viewer's default web brwser n any device. There's n need t save, keep track f, r send yur mix files. Each published mix appears n yur My Mixes page and its URL never changes, even when yu update and republish yur mix. Yu can als use the URL t link r embed yur mix n ther websites. This is the recmmended exprt ptin because it gives yu cntrl ver wh can view yur mix, and it als gives yu data abut hw yur mix was viewed and by whm. If yu require this data r the mix itself t be present n yur wn servers, use ne f the vide exprt ptins belw. My Mixes Thugh nt technically an exprt ptin either, My Mixes pens the My Mixes page n the Office Mix website in yur default web brwser. It prvides an easy way fr yu t see yur list f published mixes, play them, and view the data cllected fr each ne. It's als useful if yu want t give the mix yu're wrking n a name similar t (r different frm) mixes yu already published but yu dn't remember their names. Vide exprt ptins Exprt t vide Exprt t Vide lets yu cnvert yur mix t a vide that viewers can watch ffline. This ptin saves the vide t the lcatin yu specify; it is nt stred n yur My Mixes page n the Office Mix website. One clear benefit f saving yur mix as a vide is that yu can distribute hwever yu chse, uplad it t a learning management system (LMS), uplad it t YuTube r ther sites, etc. But because it's a vide and nt a mix, the interactive elements will appear in the vide but they will nt be interactive. Specifically, viewers will nt be able t click r therwise interact with: Hyperlinks Quizzes Plls Simulatins Other interactive cntent inserted frm Quizzes Vides Apps In additin, Office Mix will nt cllect data abut vides. Analytics data is available nly fr mixes (nt vides) n yur My Mixes page n the Office Mix website. Exprt t SCORM Exprt t SCORM cnverts yur mix t a SCORM package that yu can uplad t yur LMS. SCORM packages appear as curses in yur LMS and are generally stred n the same server as yur LMS. If yu included high-fidelity audi-vide elements in yur curse, viewers will mst likely need a high bandwidth cnnectin t view it prperly.

14 Nte that this exprt ptin has the same limitatins as Exprt t Vide: interactive elements that yu inserted in yur mix will n lnger be interactive after yu exprt yur mix t this frmat; and analytics will nt be cllected r made available by Office Mix. Office Mix best practices Cngratulatins! Yu decided t use Office Mix fr yur recrded lessns rather than investing in traditinal vide-making equipment includes screencasting sftware, pen anntatin, interactive whitebards, high-end micrphnes, vide cameras, recrding sftware, and cmpsiting/editing sftware. But that's just the start. Belw are seven steps fr creating vide-based lessns that will help yu create mixes that engage yur students' minds and attentin: 1. Keep it shrt (6 minutes r less). Shrter vides are much mre engaging t students wh are grwing up in the YuTube generatin than vides the length f a TV prgram r mre. Studies shw that engagement drps sharply after just six minutes. If yu plan yur lessns s that ne vide equals ne tpic, yu're mre likely students t keep yur students' attentin with many shrt vides (e.g., five six-minute vides) than with ne lng vide (e.g., ne 30-minute vide). 2. Dn t feel cmpelled t use vide. Vide slides take lnger t recrd, and mre iteratins t get right. A cmmn practice is t use a full screen vide fr the intrductin and then switch t audi and inking. This makes it much faster t create yur mix. Hwever, vides that shw yu talking directly t yur students are mre engaging. Think abut when and where students will benefit mst frm seeing yu speaking t them, either in a thumbnail vide in ne crner f the mix, r in a full-size vide that takes up the entire area f the mix. 3. Amateur, authentic vides beat high-end, rehearsed recrdings. Vides with an "indie" feel, meaning they can be rugh-arund-the-edges but cmmunicate yur message clearly, are ften mre engaging than high-fidelity studi recrdings that feels as if they've been rehearsed ver and ver. T give yur vides mre f an authentic lk and feel, recrd them in an infrmal and familiar setting, like the ffice where yu hld ffice hurs fr students. Yu'll save mney by nt renting a sleek and plished space, and yu'll create the ne-t-ne atmsphere that will put yur students at ease. 4. Draw n yur slides just like yu'd draw in yur classrm. Tutrials in which instructrs draw n tablets, like the nes prduced by Khan Academy, are easier t fllw than PwerPint slide shws r screencasts that run frm start t finish withut the instructr calling the students' attentin t specific infrmatin. Intrduce mtin, animatin, and inking int yur lessns, alng with audi r vide r yurself speaking, s that students can fllw alng with yur thught prcess. 5. Plan yur lessns with MOOC in mind. High-quality, pre-recrded classrm lectures are nt particularly engaging, even when they're cut

15 int shrter segments fr a MOOC (Massive Open Online Curse). If yu must recrd a classrm lecture, keep the MOOC frmat in mind and partner with instructinal designers wh understand the best way t deliver nline training r educatin. 6. Be energetic, enthusiastic, and when apprpriate, funny. Have yu ever watched a vide in which an instructr drnes n? Delivering the same material with energy and enthusiasm can makes a huge difference, especially if yu inject yur wn brand f humr int it, the same way yu wuld in a classrm. Fr that reasn, fllw these vide tips t make sure that yur screen recrding always plays the way yu expect. 1. D nt insert mre than ne vide n a slide. If a slide cntains tw vides, Office Mix wn't knw which ne t play first. Hwever, there is a wrkarund if yu want t insert tw vides n a slide: Create tw identical-lking slides. On the first slide, insert vide 1 and an image f vide 2. On the secnd slide, insert vide 2 and an image f vide 1. When yur mix plays, vide 1 will play n the first slide and vide 2 will play n the secnd slide. But t the user, it will lk as if vide 1 will play and then vide 2 will play n the same slide. 2. D nt insert an animatin n a slide that cntains a vide. The same challenge applies t this situatin as t the situatin abve. The gd news is that yu can use the same wrkarund: Create tw identical-lking slides. Decide whether yu want the animatin r the vide t play first. On the first slide, insert the element yu want t play first, and als insert an image f the element that will play secnd. Fr instance, if yu want a vide t "flat in" t yur slide, add that animatin effect t an image f yur vide. On the secnd slide, insert the element yu want t play secnd and an image f the element that played n the slide Yu cannt ink n a vide r interactive cntent (the ne yu insert by clicking Quizzes Vides Apps). 4. Yu can change the size f yur vide after yu create yur slide recrding. Befre yu create a slide recrding, yu need t select either Thumbnail r Full Screen belw the vide preview.
