5 Rotary Encoders Rotary Encoders Technoogy and Functiona Principe Rotary encoders are used in automation technoogy as sensors for anges, positions, speed, and acceeration. Spindes, gear racks, measuring whees, or cabe pus can aso be used to detect inear movements. They convert the actua vaue of a mechanica movement into eectric signas that can be evauated by counters, tachometers, PCs, and industria PCs. Transparent and nontransparent fieds are appied to a pastic or gass pane. Pacing a ight source on one side of the pane and a ight receiver on the other enabes rotation to be detected in a noncontact manner. If the ight beam hits a transparent fied, the receiver circuit detects a puse. However, if the path of the beam is interrupted by a dark fied, no puse is triggered. Es that emit ight in the infrared range are usuay used as the ight source. Photo diodes or photo transistors are used as the receiver. 1.2 Absoute rotary encoders Absoute rotary encoders output a uniquey coded numerica vaue at each shaft position. For positioning appications in particuar, absoute rotary encoders perform the counting tasks instead of the subsequent eectronics, eiminating the need for compex and expensive input components. Furthermore, reference runs do not need to be performed when switching the machine on or if the suppy votage fais, because the current position vaue is avaiabe immediatey. Singeturn absoute rotary encoders divide one shaft revoution into a defined number of measuring steps. The maximum resoution is 16 bits, i.e., up to 65,536 different positions. Mutiturn absoute rotary encoders do not just detect anguar positions within a revoution, they aso detect the number of revoutions using a mutistage gear. The resoution of the mutiturn part is up to 1 bits, i.e., up to 16,38 revoutions can be identified. This resuts in a tota resoution of 30 bits or a tota of 1,073,71,82 measuring steps. Parae absoute rotary encoders transfer the position vaue to the evauation eectronics in parae over severa ines. In the case of seria absoute rotary encoders, the output data is issued via standard interfaces and standardized protocos. Point-to-point connections were often used in the past to perform a data transfer, whereas nowadays fiedbus systems are increasingy used. For further information, see the section "Appication Notes for Absoute Rotary Encoders." 2. ifferent esigns and Mounting 2.1 Rotary encoders with soid shaft If no further functions are added to this principe, the device simpy detects that the disk is rotating. It is not possibe to specify the direction of rotation or even an absoute position. Rotary encoders differ in terms of their functiona principe, mechanica design, and mounting. These rotary encoders are fitted with a soid shaft. The rotary encoder is connected to the drive shaft via an additiona couping. The couping connects both shafts mechanicay and compensates the axe offset. Straps, pinions, measuring whees, and cabe pus can aso be used to connect a rotary encoder to the driving shaft. Generay, attention must be paid to the permissibe shaft oad. epending on the couping type, there are different eves of risk of destroying the measuring device due to radia and/or axia forces that are too strong. 1. ifferent Functiona Principes 1.1 Incrementa rotary encoders Incrementa rotary encoders provide a defined number of puses per shaft revoution. The speed of a movement is determined by measuring the period duration or counting the puses per time unit. If you add together the puses from a reference point, the counted vaue represents a measurement for the ange passed or the distance traveed. Two-channe rotary encoders with 90 phase-shifted output signas enabe the downstream eectronics to determine the direction of rotation of the shaft and thereby aso enabe bidirectiona positioning tasks. Three-channe incrementa rotary encoders issue a zero signa once per revoution. For further information, see the section "Appication Notes for Incrementa Rotary Encoders." 6 Introduction 2.2 Hoow shaft rotary encoders The rotary encoder shaft for this design has either a thru-hoe or a bind hoe (rotary encoder with recessed hoow shaft). The rotary encoder and drive can be connected easiy via the integrated shaft and hub connection. Hoow shaft rotary encoders have an integrated or attached torque rest that compensates an axe offset of the rotary encoder and drive. Couping is unnecessary in this case. Hoow shaft rotary encoder Hoow shaft rotary encoders have a thru-hoe for the drive shaft. Advantages of hoow shaft rotary encoders: Compact system of motor and encoder Easy mounting isadvantages of hoow shaft rotary encoders: Compex interna structure The shaft and hub connection is aready integrated in these rotary encoders. It must simpy be ensured that the torque is transferred correcty. A simpe and cost-effective option for this is the integrated torque rest. With this type of mounting, the drive shaft bears the weight of the rotary encoder. The incusion of a pin on the periphery of the rotary encoder prevents rotation about the hoow shaft. A other eves of freedom must not be restricted. Rotary encoder with recessed hoow shaft Rotary encoders with recessed hoow shaft offer the same functionaity as the hoow shaft rotary encoders described above. However, in contrast to the hoow shaft rotary encoders, they have a bind hoe. 2.3 Mounting Camping fange This type of fange enabes the rotary encoder to be mounted on the camping fange with simutaneous centering of the rotationa axis (mounting bracket), or mounted on the existing front-face threads. Rotary Encoders Servo fange This type of fange enabes the rotary encoder to be fixed to the servo groove of the rotary encoder using mounting camps, or screwed to existing front-face threads, or mounted using a mounting be. 685

Shaft oad The shaft of a rotary encoder is mounted free of pay using two axiay tensioned ba bearings. ue to the characteristics of the system, the permissibe radia force (Fr) is aways greater than the axia force (Fa). The anticipated service ife of the bearing depends on three parameters: axia force, radia force, and speed. The permissibe eectric speed depends on the type of interface used. Shaft offsets such as a radia, axia, or anguar offset occur despite very precise production and mounting of the drive shaft. This is often caused by temperature effects. A rigidy mounted rotary encoder creates an over-determined system with its cearance-free mount and the drive shaft mount. The forces generated destroy the rotary encoder as a resut of increased axia and radia forces. The higher the torsiona rigidity of the couping, the ower the torsiona error between the rotary encoder and drive. The restoring forces of the couping are directy reated to the compensating movement of the couping. These forces must not exceed the permissibe axia and radia forces. 8 Introduction. Instaation Notes.1 Interference suppression measures The use of sophisticated microeectronics requires a consistenty designed interference suppression and wiring concept. This appies increasingy as housing designs become smaer and performance requirements become higher in modern machines. The foowing instaation notes and proposas appy to "norma industria environments." There is no singe optimum soution to suit every interfering environment. Maintain a minimum radius of curvature in accordance with the data in the data sheet, and avoid sheer and tensie stress..2 Operating notes 5. Safety Notices. Warning Caution You must note the nationa safety and accident prevention reguations as we as the foowing safety information in these operating instructions when working with a rotary encoder. If fauts cannot be rectified, the device must be switched off and protected against inadvertent startup. Repairs may be carried out ony by the manufacturer. Access and modifications to the device are not permitted. Ony tighten the camping ring if a shaft is inserted into the area of the camping ring (hoow shaft rotary encoder). Tighten a screws and connectors before the rotary encoder is put into operation.. o not stand on the rotary encoder!. o not make subsequent modifications to the drive shaft! Every Pepper+Fuchs rotary encoder eaves our factory in perfect condition. To maintain this quaity and guarantee undisturbed operation, note the foowing specifications: Avoid shock impacts to the housing and the encoder shaft in particuar, as we as axia and radia overoading of the encoder shaft. The accuracy and service ife of the encoder are guaranteed ony when a suitabe couping is used. The operating votage must be switched on or off at the same time for the rotary encoder and connecting device (e.g., contro unit). Any wiring activity may be carried out ony when de-energized. The maximum operating votages must not be exceeded. The devices must be operated with safety extra-ow votages..3 Notes on fitting the shied Avoid impact!. o not make subsequent modifications to the housing! Rotary Encoders The immunity of a system is argey determined by the correct choice of shied. Instaation errors often occur in precisey this area. The shied is often aid ony on one side and sodered to the grounding termina by a wire, which is authorized in F technoogy. However, with EMC it is the rues of HF technoogy that appy. A basic objective of HF technoogy is that HF energy is ed to the ground with as itte impedance as possibe because it otherwise discharges in the cabe. ow impedance is achieved through a arge-area connection with meta areas. You must note the foowing: Connect the shied on both sides to a arge area on a "common ground," provided there is no risk of potentia equaization currents. Pu back the entire shied behind the isoation and camp it to a arge area beow a tension reief. When using a cabe connection, connect the tension reief directy to a grounded area on the screw termina, ensuring a-round contact. When using pugs, ony metaized pugs may be used (e.g., SUB- pugs with metaized housing). Ensure the direct connection of the tension reief to the housing. 687

9 Rotary Encoders Rotary Encoders Appication Notes for Incrementa Rotary Encoders Incrementa rotary encoders are rotary encoders that ony emit puses. The anguar position can be cacuated from the resoution (Z) and the number of puses per revoution. The anguar speed (w) can be cacuated from the signa frequency. The period duration of the anguar acceeration (a) can aso be cacuated from the tempora change. Rotationa direction monitoring with incrementa rotary encoders To detect the direction of rotation of a movement, the detection principe is extended to incude a receiver on channe A and channe B. Rotationa direction monitoring is enabed by the 90 phase-shifted detection (see graphic). In the first graphic ( cw), channe A runs ahead of channe B. This indicates cockwise rotation, whereas II ccw indicates counter-cockwise rotation. The direction of rotation is specified on the rotary encoder shaft from the perspective of the viewer. epending on the type of incrementa rotary encoder, channe A or channe B is the ead channe. Further detais are incuded in the respective data sheets. A B I cw Inverted channes The inverted signas are used in addition to spurs A, B, and 0 to improve signa transmission. This transmission is avaiabe as an option with the RS22 standard interface and with push-pu. A A B B 0 0 The advantage is that unwanted signas can be banked. If a noise puse occurs, it is induced equay in a ines if the strands are twisted in pairs. The noise puse can be banked by cacuating the difference. The working principe is iustrated in the graphic beow. This coud be, for exampe, a counter, a contro device (PC), or a tachometer. If detection shoud not be imited to within one revoution, a further signa is required that appears ony once per revoution. This signa (third channe) is known as a zero signa, channe N, or spur N. The zero signa is often aso used as the reference vaue. The graphic iustrates the signa sequence of a three-channe incrementa rotary encoder. A B Puse mutipication Puse mutipication is used to increase the measuring steps or reduce the output frequency of the incrementa rotary encoder. The signas of an incrementa rotary encoder can be doubed or mutipied by inking channes A and B (see foowing graphics). Exampe: An appication requires 20,000 measuring steps per revoution at a speed of 3000 min -1. If the contro units (PC, counter, tachometer) offer the "mutipication" option, it is possibe to revert to the more cost-effective incrementa rotary encoders with 5000 puses. The output frequency of the incrementa rotary encoder is aso reduced. The associated strand pairs must be twisted to achieve maximum immunity. This interface can aso be used as an aternative to the TT interface. Compared with the Open Coector outputs (OC), the push-pu output is characterized by its better sew rate and increased eve of immunity. An externa circuit, such as is necessary with NPN or PNP, is not required. In addition to improved immunity, this output aso sti has the inverted channes. The main area of appication for this output is that of medium switching frequencies. The OC outputs can be repaced by this interface. In this case, ony the non-inverted signas are used. 11 Rotary Encoders Rotary Encoders Appication Notes for Sine/Cosine Rotary Encoders Sine/cosine rotary encoders are incrementa rotary encoders that provide anaog signas instead of rectanguar signas at their outputs stages. The output votages of channes A and B have a sine-shaped signa sequence. Compared with the digita signas of an incrementa rotary encoder, such sine and cosine-shaped signas offer a few advantages in terms of reprocessing in downstream connected contro units. The anguar position can be cacuated from the number of periods per revoution and the measured signa periods. The anguar speed (w) can be cacuated from the signa frequency. The period duration of the anguar acceeration can aso be cacuated from the tempora change. Rotationa direction monitoring with sine/cosine rotary encoders Both these sine-shaped puses are eectricay phase-shifted by 90. As with incrementa rotary encoders with rectanguar output signas, rotationa direction monitoring is aso possibe for (see graphic). In the earier graphic (cw), channe A runs ahead of channe B. This indicates cockwise rotation, whereas ccw indicates counter-cockwise rotation. The direction of rotation is specified on the rotary fange from the perspective of the viewer. The actua measurement, more precisey the evauation (counting) of the signa periods, takes pace in an additiona contro interface on the pant side. Appication Notes for Absoute Rotary Encoders In the case of absoute rotary encoders, both puses and entire data words are generated. The detection function that has been deveoped especiay for this reads the position of the shaft from the code disk. The data words are transferred in parae or seria depending on the interface. Singeturn In the case of singeturn absoute rotary encoders, one encoder revoution (360 ) is divided into a maximum of 65,536 measuring steps (16 bits). After each compete revoution, encryption commences once more at the start vaue. The encoder eectronics do not recognize how many revoutions have been competed. Mutiturn In addition to the encrypted disk that is used with singeturn, a gear is aso integrated for mutiturn absoute rotary encoders. This gear is specified and encrypted in such a way that up to 16,38 revoutions (1 bits) can be detected. The tota resoution is 16 bits (singeturn resoution) in addition to 1 bits (mutiturn resoution), equating to 30 bits. ue to the high number of measuring steps (over one biion), this type of encoder can aso divide very ong inear distances into sma measuring steps. Interfaces The Pepper+Fuchs product portfoio incorporates rotary encoders for the wide range of common interfaces that are avaiabe on the market for absoute rotary encoders: Parae interface The focus of this interface is on rapid data transfer. The position data is read directy from the gray-coded materia measure. SSI interface The SSI (Synchronous Seria Interface) interface was deveoped especiay for transferring output data from an absoute rotary encoder to a contro system. The contro unit transmits a start sequence and the absoute rotary encoder responds with a position vaue. AS-Interface Binary sensors are generay networked using AS-Interface in modern machines and pants. In order to meet rea-time requirements, a mutisave soution was deveoped in the form of the AS-Interface rotary encoder. CAN Pepper+Fuchs offers CANopen rotary encoders in accordance with SP06 (Cass 1 and Cass 2). evicenet evice Net rotary encoders add to our range of products. 12 Introduction Ethernet The absoute rotary encoders with Ethernet interface support TCP/IP, EtherNet/IP, Powerink, and PROFINET IO protocos. Parameterization is carried out using the Java Appets provided by the interna web server. The protocos provided enabe data to be transferred from the contro eve to the pant periphery and back in a quick and verifiabe manner, which enabes parameterization, diagnosis, and remote maintenance. Code types Appication Notes for Rotary Encoders for Hazardous Areas "Fameproof encosure type of protection (EEx d) IN EN 50016/VE/0170/0171 Part 5 Binary code Binary code is the cassic code of the dua number system. This code can be used to perform cacuations as is the case with the decima number system. It is a mutistep code. This encryption can be used to change severa bits at the same time from step to step. If the transition from seven to eight is executed, bits 0, 1, 2, and 3 change. To ensure high transfer safety, it is recommended that you use a code where just one bit changes from step to step. The evauating contro unit can then check whether the associated condition has been fufied and, if this is not the case, impement the necessary faut repair. Gray code The Gray code is a one-step code. If you ook at the transitions from step to step, you can see that just one bit changes in each case. To cacuate using this code, it must first be converted into a binary code. This code type is recommended if the data is transferred via a parae interface. In order to check the singe-step code, each code change must be detectabe by the test ogic. Gray excess code The Gray excess code, aso known as the capped gray code, is an extract from the compete Gray code. It is aways symmetricay capped, so ony even-numbered extracts can be used. The ogic behind this is that another number of measuring steps can be achieved when this is required by the power of two. For instance, there is often a need to reduce a 9-bit vaue (512 measuring steps) to 360 measuring steps. The one-step code remains unaffected. "Type of protection where the parts that can ignite a potentiay exposive atmosphere are paced in an encosure which can withstand the pressure caused by an exposion inside the housing and prevents the transmission of the exposion to the surrounding exposive atmosphere." The housings are not gas-tight but have a fameproof joint that acts as a pressure reief opening. Any emerging gases are cooed down to such an extent that they are unabe to ignite a potentiay exposive atmosphere outside of the housing. Ignition is prevented if the minimum ignition temperature and the minimum ignition energy of the surrounding potentiay exposive atmosphere are not reached. The apparatus for this type of protection is therefore permitted for exposion groups I, IIA, IIB, and IIC with different minimum joint engths and maximum joint widths (see Tabes 1 and 2 of EN 50018) depending on the type of joint. The most important detai in the fameproof encosure "d" type of protection is the fameproof joint that can be neither enarged (rough remova of rust) nor made smaer (ubrication with resinous fat). If apparatus is used that is protected through fameproof encosure, the eectric ines are usuay instaed on the basis of the "increased safety" type of protection.
