2 Radar System Tester The Radar System Tester (RST) is a reiabe and convenient test too for anaysis, maintenance and repair of a ong ine of equipment attached to anaogue radars, and for testing of the radar itsef. As the compact RST is a portabe, ight-weight, battery-powered standaone unit, it ensures optima fied usage for a wide range of civi and miitary requirements for test of radar attached equipment. The RST reduces requirements for an extensive ist of externa test equipment, and has aso the abiity to test new radar equipment prior to instaation. The RST is capabe of simuating signas from existing anaogue radars. It is a practica soution for radar signa emuation. Last, but not east, the RST can test the operation of the antenna. This incudes a test of the inearity in the rotation of the antenna in singe or dua ACP radar systems (variations in ange veocity) - an antenna feature which so far has been compicated to assess during maintenance and repair. Shown beow is an exampe of a graph dispay resuting from data input from an antenna to the RST in connection with the antenna s rotation. Such data is ogged from the RST to a PC, aptop or dataogger, for ater formatting and dispay of the test resuts in a WINDOWS environment in tabes or graphics using the RST Chart Program. 3 Test Features 1) Radar Simuation Mode Within the RSTs abiity to simuate signas from the radar is of course the simuation of the main trigger puse. The setting of the Radar Trigger Puse (RTP) can be done either from a setup which is preset by the operator with practica RTP vaues, or the RTP can be seected manuay at any reevant vaue by turning the potentiometer abeed RTP. The Puse Width of the RST is User seectabe between 1.1 usec and 99.8 usec. The simuation of the antenna itsef is aso based on requirements specified by the operator. The Rotation Per Minute (RPM) can be seected either from a setup preset by the operator with practica RPM numbers, or the RPM can be seected manuay at any reevant vaue by turning the potentiometer abeed RPM. The number of Azimuth Change Puses (ACP) can be seected among four different - but fixed - vaues. The Azimuth Reference Puse (ARP) is generated ony once per antenna rotation. It is aways positioned between the ast ACP in a given rotation, and the subsequent ACP in the foowing rotation. The Puse Width of the ACP is User seectabe between 1.1 usec and 99.8 usec. The Puse Width of the ARP is fix ~2.2 usec. 2.b) ACP Count The tota number of ACPs is aso counted during the Singe ACP Test. 2.c) ACP Jitter The ACP Jitter Test measures the time interva between every singe pair of ACPs for one rotation. After this rotation, an average variation is cacuated and converted into a percentage of the idea ACP time. The maximum and minimum time intervas are determined and identified. Communication to a PC or Data-Logger is not possibe during the ACP Jitter Test. After competion of the test, the resuts for one rotation can be transmitted to the PC as an ASCII data fie ony. A more detaied Jitter Test can aso be performed by using coected data from the Singe ACP test and the RST Chart Program. 2.d) ARP Location During the ACP Jitter Test, the ocation of the ARP in reation to two ACPs is measured. The ocation is identified in percentage, where 50% is ocated exacty equidistant between two ACPs. 2) Antenna Test Mode In the Testers Antenna Test Mode, the User can evauate the ACP and the RTP counts of the radar. The Tester can either monitor one rotation, or it can perform a continuous count of the ACP. The activating puse is the ARP. The Tester wi count the number of ACPs between two ARPs, and on this basis automaticay cacuate the actua ACP count per antenna rotation. The User can og the data from the RST to a PC, aptop or data-ogger, for ater anaysis and dispay of the test resuts. The Antenna Test Mode is conducted whie the radar is in operation without any interference of the systems norma functions. The tests incuded are: 2.e) Dua ACP (A - B) The A - B test is a discrepancy test between two ACPs on the same antenna system. Every time the RST receives an ACP from the A-output, the counter is incremented with 1. Every time the RST receives an ACP from the B-output the counter is decremented with 1. In the GO/ NOGO test (singe rotation), the minimum and the maximum counts are dispayed. If these counts exceed a predefined vaue, the RST wi inform the operator that the test was NOGO. The A - B Test can aso be performed in connection with the RST Chart Program for a graphic presentation. 2.a) Singe ACP Singe ACP test is an ACP time measurement. Depending upon the number of ACPs per rotation, and the antennas RPM, the RST wi automaticay seect the highest resoution possibe. The imitation in the resoution is due to the data transmission speed from the RST to the PC or Data-Logger. (The maximum number of ACPs to be measured is 1100 Sectors per second.) The data transmitted from the PC or Data- Logger can be used directy in conjunction with the RST Chart Program to graphicay dispay the inearity, or saved for ater anaysis. This data is transmitted in binary format. 2.f) RST Chart Program The RST Chart Program enabes the user to graphicay dispay and anayze the information received from the RST during the Antenna Test. The chart functions of the RST Chart Program are: Liniarity, Sector, Jitter, two-fie comparison, and fu-fie chart. These charts provide the toos necessary to evauate the antenna s inearity, it s mechanica condition, and to perform trend anaysis used for maintenance panning and performance anaysis. 3

A) Liniarity, B) Jitter. 3) PRF Count The PRF Count measures the Puse Repetition Frequency of the Radar Trigger Puse (RTP) from the Radar. 4) Digita Video Map Generator (DVMG/VMG) Test Mode Finay, the RST tests the GM MERC Digita Video Map Generators (VMG/DVMG), such as FA (used by FAA), AN/TPX-42 (used by US Navy), or AN/GPA-134 (used by US Air Force). Besides being abe to generate the radar input needed for a manua test, the RST can aso automaticay test and evauate the operation of the VMG. RST Features Tests antenna inearity Evauates antenna scan, one ACP at a time, for jitter and inearity An efficient way of testing the FA16700, AN/GPA-134 and AN/TPX-42 Digita Video Map Generators The VMG test is a comparison test: The RST has two Map Reference Memories. #1 is suppied with the the RST, and contains a VMG Test Picture in the Test Picture Board (ID: 00t1btpb) as a defaut. #2 is user-specified: The user can seect the Test Picture Board as a reference, or oad the RST with a new reference picture from a Map Memory Board with a user-specified Test Picture. Other Digita Video Map Generators can aso be tested using the RST Mark-III. 6 Reated Air Traffic Equipment MIP Reated to RST is the MIP Radar Integration System, which provides tota air traffic surveiance capabiity over arge areas. MIP integrates radars, ADS-B and Mutiateration to ATC centers, and can receive radar data from an unimited number of sensors and convey to unimited number of Air Traffic Centers, ensuring seamess integration of the air traffic network. Furthermore, it provides un-equivaent pot correction capabiity. MIP is deveoped in cose cooperation with the Roya Danish Air Force. For further information on MIP, pease see the MIP information sheet. TOC TOC (Traffic Observation Center) is designed for airports without a radar on-site. TOC is characterized by its abiity to dispay a ive rea time air traffic picture at airports from up to four neighboring radar sensors. TOC operates with two dispays: An air picture dispay and a text based information dispay for fight strips and IFF/SIF codes. SEP Sensor Evauation Program (SEP) is deveoped within the Roya Danish Air Force with the purpose of evauating pot accuracy and performance of radar, ADS-B, and Mutiateration systems within an ATC network. SEP captures statistica data essentia to the monitoring of radar degradation, diagnostics, and LAN sow-downs, and to performing continuous data/time monitoring between any two points in the network. DVMG The Digita Video Map Generator (VMG/DVMG) systems superimpose (overay) up to 10 digita map pictures on up to 16 existing Pan Position Indicator (PPI) dispays. The VMG software makes high accuracy digita video maps for use with miitary and civi anaog radar dispays. It is an add-on system which supports search radars in Air Traffic Contro, Coast Guard, and Missie Systems in stationary as we as in semi-mobie radar instaations. The VMG is NAS certified and instaed at a FAA ARTS IIE & ARTS IIIA sites, and in most US miitary bases in the USA and around the Word. CENRAP The CTG generates simuated radar trigger signas needed for dispay systems at sites operating the Digita Video Map Generator (VMG/ DVMG) whie the oca radar is out of operation. CTG has an automatic set-up capabiity which after a earning period ensures an accurate and seamess switch-over from the true signa operation to the simuated signa operation of the VMG.
