3 Introduction Congrtultions nd thnk you for your ceiling loudspeker purchse. The AD-C820, AD-C821 nd AD-C1200 models offer excellent coustic performnce in n esy-to-instll nd ttrctive pckge. Plese review these instructions crefully nd follow the recommendtions. Instlltion should e done y licensed instlltion professionl nd in ccordnce with these instructions nd locl uilding codes. The AD-C820 nd AD-C821 models feture n 8" coxil driver with high-frequency neodymium compression driver nd low-frequency ferrite woofer in ported ffle ssemly. The AD-C1200 model fetures 12" coxil driver with 1.75" compression driver nd 12" low-frequency ferrite woofer in ported ffle ssemly. All models re equipped with n udio trnsformer suitle for 70V nd 100V distriuted loudspeker systems. The AD-C820 nd AD-C821 re equipped with 6 position tp selector switch which hs n Off position nd cn ypss the trnsformer for 16 ohm pplictions. On the AD-C1200 tp selection is ccomplished using terminl lock connectors during instlltion. There is lso connection for ypssing the trnsformer for 16 ohm opertion. 8 AD-C1200SG Loudspeker Grille Figure 11 AD-C821 Instlltion Options The AD-C821 Loudspeker System is lind-mount design mde to mount into finished ceilings. The AD-C821 loudspeker system cn e mounted in suspended ceilings, s well s non-suspended ceiling types. We recommend tht you consult n instlltion professionl for sfety ssurnce, qulity instlltion, nd optimum coustic performnce. Suspended Ceiling The Suspended-ceiling Tile Rils (Figure 6) must e used with the Split Ring rcket (Figure 5). The Suspended-ceiling Tile Rils re designed to e used with 24" (600 mm) t-chnnel suspended-ceiling supports to provide necessry strength for mounting. Non-suspended Ceilings For other ceiling types, the Split Ring rcket is used to reinforce the mounting surfce. Sfety Fetures The AD-C821 provides two sfety fetures: Seismic Mounting T nd Grille-retining Sfety Tether. The Seismic Mounting T is the metl t, on top of the enclosure, suitle for securing the loudspeker system to uilding frming. This provides mximum sfety in the event the ceiling structure fils for ny reson. The Grille-retining Sfety Tether is comprised of two plstic lines, one coming from the grille, the other from the loudspeker ssemly, tht hook together to prevent the grille from flling. 7

9 AD-C821 Instlltion Tools nd Prts Required for Instlltion 1. #2 Phillips hed screwdriver 2. Torque driver 3. Wire stripping tool 4. Soldering equipment 5. Tool for cutting loudspeker mounting hole in ceiling. Must e le to cut circulr hole through the ceiling without dmging the structurl integrity of the ceiling. 6. Smll flt-tip screwdriver for securing wires in Euro-style connector. 7. Wire Clmp Fitting to instll in the cover plte loudspeker wiring hole to protect nd stilize the loudspeker wires. This cn e stndrd electricl conduit wire clmp, or something similr. The hole is 1.1" ( 28.3 mm). 8. Cle for Seismic Support rcket. The cle must e:. Strong enough to support ten times the weight of the loudspeker (15 ls / 6.8 kg). Consult locl uilding code requirements.. Long enough to rech from structurl prt of the uilding, such s em, to just elow the ceiling to provide enough room to ttch it to the Seismic Support rcket, prior to instlling the loudspeker. c. Mde of mteril tht does not urn nd is not esily cut. For exmple, steel cle. 9. Fstener for ttching seismic support cle to structurl support of the uilding. The fstener must e strong enough to hold ten times the weight of the loudspeker system. Consult locl uilding code requirements. Instlltion There re two methods for instlling the AD-C821 loudspeker system into the ceiling: using the Mounting Clmps with or without the Split Ring or using the Suspended-ceiling Tile Rils with the Split Ring. The Split Ring with Suspended-ceiling Tile Rils is recommended for suspended ceilings with 24" (600 mm) wide pnels. The support rckets, long with the ceiling cross-supports, provide necessry support. The Mounting Clmps, with or without the Split Ring, re recommended for non-suspended ceilings tht cn support the weight of the AD-C821 Loudspeker System without dditionl support. Cut Mounting Hole in Ceiling The following steps re for ny of the AD-C821 instlltion methods except where noted. 1. Mke sure there is t lest 12" (305 mm) clernce ove the suspended ceiling t the spot where the AD-C821 is to e instlled. 2. Use the outer edge of the Mounting Hole Templte or the Split Ring inner edge s pttern to mrk the suspended-ceiling pnel for the mounting hole cutout. If you re not using Mounting Hole Templte or Split Ring, the hole dimeter should e 11.7" (297 mm). 3. Use suitle tool to cut the mounting hole in the suspended-ceiling pnel. While cutting the hole, e sure not to stress the mounting surfce to prevent crcking nd wekening the structurl integrity. 4. Insert the AD-C821 into the mounting hole to mke sure the loudspeker system fits properly. Remove the loudspeker system. 5. Pull the fcility s loudspeker signl wires through the mounting hole. 8

10 15.16" 395 mm Figure 12 Instll Split Ring nd Suspended-ceiling Tile Rils 1. Skip this step if instlling in non-suspended ceiling. Pss the two Suspended-ceiling Tile Rils (Figure 6) through the hole nd plce on oth sides of the mounting hole 15.16" (395 mm) prt, s shown in (Figure 12) nd instll onto the ceiling T-rils. Mke sure the ottom prt of the rcket (tht is flt ginst the tile) is towrd the mounting hole nd the verticl ril of the support rcket (with the holes in it) is wy from the mounting hole (Figure 13). Note: The support rckets hve holes long their usle length to ttch the Split Ring rcket (Figure 13). This llows for the mounting hole to e plced in mny positions long the ceiling tile width. 2. Insert the Split Ring through the mounting hole y slightly ending the ring prt t the split, inserting one end through the mounting hole, nd rotting or screwing the ring through the hole. 3. Skip this step if instlling in non-suspended ceiling. Instll the Split Ring onto the Suspended-ceiling Tile Rils y plcing the verticl slots on the Split Ring over the verticl ril of the support rcket. Move the Split Ring s necessry to lign it with the mounting hole (Figure 13) nd hole in ech support rcket. 4. Skip this step if instlling in non-suspended ceiling. Use two of the M4 sheet metl screws provided in the AD-C800 RAIL KIT to ttch the Split Ring to the Suspended-ceiling Tile Rils. Figure 13 9

11 Support nd Wire the Loudspeker System Importnt: Loudspekers cn potentilly generte sustntil virtion. In ddition to ensuring ll hrdwre is properly instlled nd secure, you must use the Seismic Support Brcket on the loudspeker to secure the loudspeker to n pproprite structurl support. This minimizes the chnce of the loudspeker flling from the ceiling in the event the primry mount fils. Any cle or wire used s secondry support line must e strong enough to support ten times the weight of the loudspeker system. Do not use rope, string, twine or other textile-sed line in the Seismic Support system s it is esily cut or urned. The Seismic Support ttchment point nd ny fsteners used on the uilding s structure must lso e strong enough to support ten times the weight of the loudspeker. 1. Using n pproprite fstener, ttch the seismic support cle to structurl support of the uilding such s em. 2. Attch the loose end of the cle to the Seismic Support rcket on the loudspeker system so tht it is supported slightly elow the ceiling. (This should llow enough room to instll the loudspeker wiring s descried in the following steps.) 3. Use #1 Phillips hed screwdriver to loosen the Pivoting Connection Cover Retining Screw (Figure 1), item c nd swing the cover open. 4. Instll Wire Clmp Fitting into the cover plte hole (Figure 1), item d. 5. Feed the fcility s loudspeker signl wiring through the cover plte hole with Wire Clmp Fitting mking sure there is enough wire to strip, tin, nd instll the connector. Do not secure the Wire Clmp Fitting t this time. 6. Strip the ends of the wires to pproximtely 0.4" (10 mm). Tin the ends of the wires. 7. Locte the two Euro-style connector plugs included with the loudspeker system (typiclly instlled in the heder (socket) connectors) (Figure 1), item nd loosen the M3 wire retining screws. Note: It is not necessry to fully remove the screws. The polrity of ech is mrked on the ck cn s shown in (Figure 15). 8. Insert ech wire into its proper connector position (oserve polrity) nd tighten the M3 retining screws. 9. Plug the two 2-pin Euro-style connector plugs into the single four-pin heder connector. 10. Adjust the wiring t the entry point to provide for stress relief nd closing the cover plte. Properly secure the Wire Clmp Fitting. (The Wire Clmp Fitting prevents wire stress nd strin from pulling the connections/connectors loose nd prevents wer on the wires ginst the cover plte.) 11. Rotte the connection cover plte closed, mking sure not to stress the connections or pinch the wires. 12. Tighten the Pivoting Connection Cover Retining Screw. Mke sure this screw is tight; if not it my rttle when the loudspeker system is in use. 13. Follow the instructions on pge 13 titled Mount the AD-C820 or AD-C821 Loudspeker System. 10

12 AD-C800BB nd AD-C820 Instlltion The AD-C800BB is designed to e pre-instlled into the ceiling nd wired. The AD-C820 Loudspeker Bffle ssemly is plugged into nd secured to the ck ox t lter time. AD-C800BB Bck Box Instlltion The AD-C800BB instlltion should e done y licensed instlltion professionl nd wiring instlled y licensed electricin in ccordnce with locl uilding codes. 1. There re 5 wiring ½" & ¾" knockout loctions, shown s item (Figure 16), ville on the AD-C800BB ck ox. Remove the knockout(s) through which the loudspeker signl wires re to e routed. 2. Secure the AD-C800BB ck ox using the suspension strps shown s item d (Figure 4), to structurl prt of the fcility tht is le to support ten times the comined weight of the AD-C800BB nd the AD-C820 Loudspeker Bffle ssemly (17 ls. / 7.7 Kg.). Consult locl uilding code requirements. Figure 16 Note: The minimum wire guge is 20 AWG, the mximum is 8 AWG. 3. Instll Wire Clmp Fitting into the selected knockout holes. You cn sustitute the necessry fitting if the fcility s loudspeker signl wiring is in conduit. 4. Route the fcility s loudspeker signl wires through the knockout hole(s)/wire Clmp Fittings nd to the cermic terminl lock. Mke sure there is enough wire to strip, tin, nd connect the wires. Do not secure the Wire Clmp Fitting t this time. 5. Strip the ends of the wires to pproximtely 0.4"(10 mm), nd tin the ends of the wires. 6. There re two wires lredy connected to the terminl lock; the striped wire is negtive, the solid color wire is positive (Figure 17). Do not remove these wires, ut ensure the locking screws re tight. Connect nd secure the fcility s loudspeker signl wiring to the cermic terminl lock using #1 Phillips hed screwdriver. Note: For disy-chining loudspekers, insert the extr pir of wires into the sme connections s the fcility s loudspeker signl wires descried in these steps. Note: Typiclly the striped wire is lck/white, the solid is gry. 11

Connect the 10-pin Mte-N-Lok connector from the AD-C800BB to J1 on the trnsformer tp switch PCB. 2. Connect the 3 Fston connectors to the crossover points J2, J3, nd J4 on the lrger PCB. Note: J2, J3, nd J4 re leled for the proper wire color. If the wire colors on the hrness re different thn the lels, one connector is smller thn the other two nd will fit on only one jck. The other two wires cn e connected to either of the two lrger jcks. 14 Mount the AD-C820 or AD-C821 Loudspeker System Note: The Mounting Clmps re prt of the ssemly nd llow for mounting surfces (ceiling) up to 2.75" in thickness. Do not instll the grille until clmps hve een tightened nd ny djustments mde. 1. Before inserting the loudspeker into the mounting hole or AD-C-800BB ck ox, djust the Mounting Clmps counterclockwise, using Phillips screwdriver, so they re folded in ginst the loudspeker ckcn nd provide enough spce for the thickness of the ceiling to which you re mounting the loudspeker. (Figure 19) item. Note: Turning the Mounting Clmp Screw counterclockwise increses the spce (loosens), nd folds the Mounting Clmp next to the loudspeker ck cn. Turning the screw clockwise folds the Mounting Clmp out, nd reduces the spce (tightens). 2. Instll the loudspeker system into the ceiling through the mounting hole, or into the AD-C800BB ck ox. 3. Tighten ech clmp using #2 Phillips screwdriver 7 in ls. (Figure 19) item. Importnt: Excessive torque my cuse mounting t nd/or ceiling dmge. Do not over-torque (20 inch-pounds mxs). If the Mounting Clmps hve een suject to extreme tempertures, Do Not Tighten until they hve reched room temperture. Note: (Figure 19) shows the AD-C821, the AD-C820 hs the sme Mounting Clmps, it does not hve the ck cn s shown in the figure.. Mounting Clmps shown in down nd out position. 15 2. Mke sure ll tests nd djustments re complete efore instlling the grille. 3. Locte the loudspeker grille. 4. The loudspeker system nd grille oth hve Grille-retining Sfety Tether. Using the clip on the grille s tether, ttch the grille s sfety tether to the loudspeker s sfety tether. Refer to (Figure 22) for detils regrding the clip.. Loudspeker tether. The mgnets hold the grille in plce. Note: You cn rotte the grille s necessry within the constrints of the tether. Rotting the grille eyond the constrints of the tether with excessive force cn rek the tether. 6. Optionl - A drill templte nd four M4 Plstite screws re provided with the grille ssemly for screw-mounted grille instlltion if desired. To provide clernce for the grille screws, use 3.4 mm drill it to drill through the grill mounting holes in the loudspeker ffle shown s item (Figure 23) nd into the ceiling mteril. Use 4.8 mm drill it nd the supplied templte to drill the holes in the grille. 14

16 AD-C1200 nd AD-C1200BB Instlltion The AD-C1200BB ck ox is designed to e pre-instlled into the ceiling nd wired. The AD-C1200 Loudspeker Bffle ssemly is plugged into nd secured to the ck ox t lter time. AD-C1200BB Instlltion The AD-C1200BB instlltion should e done y licensed instlltion professionl nd wiring instlled y licensed electricin in ccordnce with locl uilding codes. 1. There re 5 wiring ½" & ¾" knockout loctions ville on the AD-C1200BB (Figure 10). Remove the knockout(s) through which the fcility s loudspeker signl wires re to e routed. 2. Skip this step if you re using electricl conduit for the fcility s loudspeker signl wiring. Instll Wire Clmp Fitting into the selected knockout holes. Cution: The AD-C1200BB ck ox weighs 53 pounds (24 kg). Be sure to use proper sfety precutions during instlltion. 3. Secure the AD-C1200BB ck ox, using the suspension strps, to structure le to support ten times comined weight (78 ls.) of the AD-C1200BB (Figure 10) nd the AD-C1200 loudspeker ffle ssemly (Figure 9). 4. Route the fcility s loudspeker signl wires through the knockout hole(s) nd to the cermic terminl lock. If you re using Wire Clmp Fittings, mke sure there is enough wire to strip, tin, nd connect the wires to the cermic terminl lock. Do not secure the Wire Clmp Fitting t this time. If you re using electricl conduit, secure the conduit to the ck ox. 5. Strip the ends of the wires to pproximtely 0.4" (10 mm), nd tin the ends of the wires. 6. There re two wires lredy connected to the terminl lock; the striped wire is negtive, the solid color wire is positive (Figure 24). Do not remove these wires, ut ensure the locking screws re tight. Connect the fcility s loudspeker signl wires to proper corresponding connections in the terminl lock using #1 Phillips hed screwdriver. Note: For disy-chining loudspekers, insert the extr wires into the sme connections s the fcility s loudspeker signl wires descried in these steps. 7. If you re using Wire Clmp Fitting, secure it nd mke sure there is enough slck in the wires inside the ox to provide for stress relief. 15

Wire holding screws Figure 24 AD-C1200 Instlltion Note: AD-C1200 comes pre-wired, from the fctory, for trnsformer tp pplictions. To ypss the trnsformer see Remove Trnsformer from the AD-C1200 Circuitry in this section. 1. Locte nd remove the five-pin Euro-style connector plug included with the loudspeker ffle ssemly. Typiclly it is plugged into its mte (J2) on the loudspeker ffle ssemly PCB. 2. Using #1 Phillips hed screwdriver, loosen the M3 wire retining screws on the plug to provide enough room to insert the tinned wires. Note: Do not remove the two-pin Euro-style connector (J1) plug with pre-ttched wires. 3. Locte the wires coming from the cermic terminl lock in the AD-C1200BB ck ox nd strip them to pproximtely 0.4" (10 mm). Tin the wire ends. 4. Insert the wires from the cermic terminl lock into the five-pin Euro-style connector in their proper connector position sed on your trnsformer tp requirements. The negtive wire goes to the COM connection, which is mrked with lck dot. Note: Trnsformer settings re lso leled on the rcket for esy reference. 16

() Use the instlltion hook, long the insertion edge of the loudspeker ffle ssemly, y hooking it to one edge of the ck ox nd using it to support tht edge while completing the ssemly. Wrning: Do not let go of the Loudspeker Bffle ssemly. The instlltion hook will not hold the Loudspeker Bffle ssemly y itself. Using #2 Phillips hed screwdriver, instll the grille with the M4 screws provided. Note: The use of LOCTITE is recommended to prevent grille screws from loosening during use. 20 Disconnect Trnsformer from the AD-C1200 Circuitry If you re connecting the loudspeker to 16 ohm system, you must disconnect the trnsformer. 1. Unplug the two-pin Euro-style plug (J1) on the PCB (Figure 25). 2. Loosen the two M3 wire securing screws using #1 Phillips hed screwdriver nd remove the wires. 3. Secure nd insulte ll the wires you removed using tie-wrp or similr device. This is to prevent rttling during loudspeker opertion. 4. Insert the wires from the ck ox cermic connector lock into the two-pin Euro-style connector nd tighten the screws. Negtive wire goes to the COM connection which is mrked with lck dot. 5. When you instll the loudspeker ffle ssemly into the ck ox, plug this connector into the two-pin heder connector (J1) on the PCB. Note: Trnsformer settings re lso leled on the rcket for esy reference. 2-Pin Euro-style connector Figure 28 Pinting the Grille An extr grille cloth is provided for use when the grille is repinted. 1. Pint the grille s desired. Allow to dry. 2. Grille cloth should e removed efore pinting. The grille cloth will hve pint on it which reduces udio performnce. 3. Attch the new grille cloth using 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Adhesive per the mnufcturer s instructions Note: Do NOT pint grille while instlled on speker. 19
