Chapter 1 AirSpeed Overview Media Formats ad Files OMF Files The AirSpeed creates media ad metadata files i the OMFI or MXF MediaFiles directories o the target workspaces. If the system s uique MediaFiles directory is ot preset o the selected etwork media drive, the AirSpeed creates oe. The AirSpeed also creates a subdirectory uder the OMFI MediaFiles (for OMF) or Avid MediaFiles (for MXF) directory. The AirSpeed does ot perform bi maagemet operatios. Bi etries for AirSpeed media are geerated by the MediaMaager server as the material is checked i. The media format (OMF or MXF) that is captured depeds o the workgroup eviromet of your MediaMaager. If you wat to capture MFX media, the MediaMaager eeds to be set to AAF i the Data Format meu i the MediaMaager System Setup widow. If you wat to capture OMF media, select OMF i the MediaMaager System Setup widow. For details o cofigurig your MediaMaager, see the Avid Uity MediaMaager documetatio. To chage your AirSpeed betwee capturig OMF ad MXF media, eter the ame of the MediaMaager that is cofigured for the media eviromet you wat. Use the Sed tab to chage the MediaMaager (see Sed Tab o page 98). Whe the MediaMaager workgroup is set to AAF mode, all ew media checked ito the workgroup is i MXF format with AAF metadata. All editors ad applicatios icluded i the MXF/AAF workgroup must support the ability to read ad write MXF media ad AAF metadata. Workspaces must already be created i Avid Uity i order to eter the workspace ame durig the AirSpeed setup (see Destiatio Template o page 92). AirSpeed creates ew projects, bis, ad catalogs if the ames i the cofiguratio do ot already exist. Ope Media Format (OMF) was developed by Avid Techology, Ic. ad may idustry ad stadards parters for the iterchage of digital media data betwee platforms ad applicatios. OMF Iterchage (OMFI) is a platform-idepedet file format that stores both the digital media (video, audio, graphics, aimatio) ad the iformatio describig how the media is edited together to form a fial sequece. This editig iformatio, called a compositio, is the OMFI represetatio of the sequece created i Avid editig applicatios. Ay other program that supports OMFI ca read OMFI files, eve if the program resides o a differet computer platform. As a result, with OMFI you ca trasfer files betwee differet applicatios o differet platforms without worryig about cross-platform traslatios. 22

Software Overview MXF Files The Material Exchage Format (MXF) is a format developed by the Professioal MPEG Forum i associatio with orgaizatios such as the SMPTE, The Europea Broadcastig Uio (EBU) ad the AAF Associatio. Material Exchage Format is a wrapper or cotaier format which ecapsulates media ad rich productio metadata ito a sigle file, which is useful for media storage ad exchage. It is a ope techology that ca be implemeted by ay maufacturer. MXF has bee desiged to be flexible eough for use i all stages of cotet creatio, from acquisitio, to authorig, to distributio.the primary beefit of MXF is that it provides greater workflow efficiecy by preservig useful metadata as media files make their way through the cotet creatio process.the MXF format is idepedet of the type of cotet that it cotais, so a MXF file ca cotai video ad/or audio at ay resolutio or compressio. I may istaces, MXF files ecapsulate media that is already formatted to oe of the existig idustry stadards. MXF allows for easy exchage of material betwee file servers, tape streamers ad digital archives. MXF is a ideal iterchage format to eable workflow efficiecies i ews broadcastig, post productio, asset maagemet, ad archivig applicatios. Media Destiatio Selectio The AirSpeed remembers the last storage destiatio set. Whether you iitiate the capture by maually pressig the frot pael Capture butto or by remotely cotrollig the capturig, media is stored to the last selected Avid Uity etwork workspace. This feature allows you to crash record usig the frot pael Record butto for quick captures. Captured media is first stored o the iteral drives of the AirSpeed ad the copied to the selected Avid Uity workspace. To avoid reachig the iteral drive s maximum storage capacity, AirSpeed ca be cofigured to automatically delete the media that has bee saved to a workspace. The Auto Delete settig i the Setup > System Cofig tab cotrols whe to delete the media ad how much media to delete. For more iformatio o settig the Auto Delete, see System Cofig Tab o page 78. I the Video ID text box, eter the ID for the clip that you wat to delete. Press Eter to accept. 3. Click the Delete butto to display the Delete Clip dialog box. 4. Click Yes to cofirm the delete request. Timecode Modes The followig topics are discussed i this sectio: Clip Duratio Verses Total Duratio - Clip Absolute Timecode Mode - Clip Relative Timecode Mode - Virtual Timecode Mode Timecode Values for Network Liks to Clips AirSpeed provides VITC ad LTC timecode fuctioality to both capture ad playback. These timecode values are always preserved. All timecode operatios are idetical i 30 Frame (525/60) ad 25 Frame (625/50) rate televisio systems except that Drop-Frame mode is ot applicable i 25 Frame operatio. 113

Chapter 5 AirSpeed Operatios Clip Duratio Verses Total Duratio All clips are described by two differet duratio values, Clip Duratio ad Total Duratio. Total Duratio is the duratio of media i a evet from first frame of recorded video to last frame of recorded video (perhaps icludig urecorded black regios, as described uder Virtual timecode below). Clip Duratio is the differece betwee the Mark OUT ad the Mark IN. The Clip Duratio is the legth of time the evet will play uder automatio cotrol. You ca view the Clip Duratio ad the Total Duratio by loadig the desired clip ito a Capture/Moitor cotroller. AirSpeed supports three types of user timecode idexes called clip absolute, clip relative, ad virtual tape. Clip Absolute Timecode Mode You ca use Absolute mode whe you select it o the Capture/Moitor pael (or i the Pilot applicatio). Whe you use Clip Absolute Timecode, the timecode is, by defiitio, zero at the begiig of ay capturig. Whe capturig is stopped, the duratio of the clip is equal to the duratio of the evet from the begiig to the ed of the capturig, ad is a absolute idex ito a clip. The followig figure shows Clip Absolute timecode mode before ay Mark IN or Mark OUT poits have bee set. Absolute Timecode Clip absolute timecode 00:00:00:00 00:00:04:12 Captured media Time Mark IN Mark OUT Default start poit is the default Mark IN poit Default clip duratio is the default Mark OUT poit 114

Timecode Modes Clip Relative Timecode Mode Clip Relative timecode is exactly the same as Clip Absolute util you set a Mark IN or a Mark OUT to move the begiig or ed of a evet s playback. After you have selected a Mark IN value, the absolute timecode ca be ay value at that IN poit, but its relative timecode is 0. Similarly, oce you select a Mark OUT value, the system recalculates the Clip Duratio based o the differece betwee the IN ad OUT poits. Relative Timecode Clip absolute timecode 00:00:00:08 00:00:04:08 00:00:00:00 Captured media Time Clip relative timecode Mark IN 00:00:00:00 Mark OUT 00:00:03:29 I the example above, Mark IN has bee set to :08 after the begiig of the capture ad Mark OUT has bee set to 4:08. Thus, the last playable frame of media is at 3:29 (from the Mark IN) ad the clip duratio is 4:00. Whe i Absolute Timecode mode, the Mark IN positio becomes the begiig of the playable media ad the Mark OUT, the ed. I order to operate outside of these poits, you must either clear the Mark or chage to aother timecode idex such as Virtual. O the Capture/Moitor user iterface, whe i Clip Absolute Mode, Mark IN ad Mark OUT values are expressed i Clip Absolute values, while the curret positio idicator is show i Relative timecode values. Relative timecode is always reported to cotrollig automatio systems via the VDCP protocol. Virtual Timecode Mode Virtual timecode mode provides a timecode space that is more useful for editig applicatios because it allows for preroll before the begiig of a clip ad post roll after the ed. Additioally, Virtual mode supports evets costructed of ay umber of cotiguous or ocotiguous captures. 115

Chapter 5 AirSpeed Operatios Coceptually, Virtual timecode provides a 24-hour space (or virtual tape ) i which to record media. This virtual tape iitially appears to the user as pre-striped or cotaiig black/silece. The default Mark I value ad the default begiig of Virtual Tape media are both 1 hour (01:00:00:00). The default Mark OUT is the ed of the capture. The followig diagram shows a example where three captures are made, separated by a few secods. These gaps will play back i black ad take up o room o the array. Virtual Timecode Virtual timecode 01:00:00:00 01:00:14:05 Typical capture IN poit is 1 hour Captured media Time Clip absolute timecode Mark IN 00:00:00:00 Mark OUT 00:00:14:05 is the clip duratio Havig made a virtual tape evet, while still i virtual mode, you ca make marks aywhere withi or beyod the rage of the recorded media. You view those mark values i either Virtual or Absolute mode as show i the followig diagram: Virtual ad Absolute Timecode Virtual timecode 01:00:01:07 01:00:12:22 01:00:00:00 01:00:14:05 Captured media Time Clip absolute timecode Clip relative timecode Mark IN Mark OUT 00:00:01:07 00:00:12:22 00:00:00:00 00:00:11:15 is the clip duratio 116

Timecode Modes Fially, you ca move the default Record I poit i Virtual Timecode mode at ay time by cueig to a differet locatio ad commecig a capture (or cueig to a poit i time prior to existig media if ay exists i the evet). Doig so maps a evet oto a differet regio of the virtual tape space as show i the followig diagram. This example is idetical to the previous oe, oly capture started at 2:30:00:00 istead of the default 1:00:00:00. Virtual ad Absolute Timecode Started Later Virtual timecode 02:30:01:07 02:30:12:22 02:30:00:00 02:30:14:05 Captured media Time Clip absolute timecode Clip relative timecode Mark IN Mark OUT 00:00:01:07 00:00:12:22 00:00:00:00 00:00:11:15 is the clip duratio O the Capture/Moitor ad Pilot user iterfaces, you ca select whether you are operatig i Virtual or Absolute Timecode mode. Mark IN ad Mark OUT values as well as the curret positio idicator are expressed i the timecode values appropriate to that selectio, as show i the precedig examples. Mark IN ad Mark OUT have o effect o playig or stoppig playout of media from these iterfaces whe i virtual mode. They oly limit the extets of the playable media i Absolute mode. Virtual Timecode is always reported to cotrollig devices whe uder the Soy protocol. Timecode Values for Network Liks to Clips Whe you access a clip from a NewsCutter product, the system checks to determie where i Virtual Tape time that clip is located. Sice default NewsCutter sequeces are created with the begiig at time 00:00:00:00, whe AirSpeed receives such a evet, it is placed at the default Virtual time of 01:00:00:00 (oe hour) for coveiece i subsequet editig operatios. Whe you create a NewsCutter clip with a startig time other tha zero, the system assumes that the o-zero time value eeds to be preserved for later editig or for establishig Mark IN ad Mark OUT values. Thus, whe AirSpeed receives such a evet, it is placed i Virtual time at the same spot as it was o the NewsCutter timelie. 117

Chapter 5 AirSpeed Operatios The reverse is true also whe clips are liked from AirSpeed to the NewsCutter. Ay evet with a IN poit (i Virtual Tape time) of 01:00:00:00 creates NewsCutter footage with a start time of zero. Ay other evet IN poit creates footage with start time equal to the IN poit. 118

Chapter 6 AirSpeed Studio ad Playout This chapter describes the AirSpeed Studio fuctioality i the Avid Uity workgroup eviromet. It also describes the steps i cofigurig the Studio. AirSpeed Studios are ot supported i the Macitosh eviromet. Studio Cocept The Studio cosists of a group of AirSpeeds that ca share a playout request. Whe media is set to the Studio, all the AirSpeeds i the Studio are set the media. Each AirSpeed i the Studio is capable of performig the playout eve if some of the Studio members are offlie. The Avid editig system sedig a sequece to the Studio looks at the iformatio listed i the TMCliet.ii tab of the Trasfer settigs to idetify the Studio ad its members. The Studio iformatio listed i the TMCliet.ii tab is the aggregate of all the AirSpeed members i the Studio. You ca create multiple Studios i a workgroup eviromet. Each Studio is created usig the same process. Creatig the Studio o the AirSpeed You create the Studio by amig up to five AirSpeeds with a commo Host Name ad a uique umber after the ame. The ame ad the umber are separated with a dash ( ). Do ot add ay spaces betwee the ame, dash, ad umber. Also, do ot use more tha oe dash i the ame. The Studio cosist of AirSpeeds usig the amig format of studioame 1 through studioame 5, which allows the Avid editig system to easily locate the members of the Studio.

Chapter 6 AirSpeed Studio ad Playout Name the AirSpeed i the Setup > Network > Host Name text box of the AirSpeed UI. For more iformatio o the etwork settigs, see Network Tab o page 77. The followig figure is a example of how you would ame three AirSpeed members to create a Studio. Three AirSpeed Members i a Studio The first AirSpeed ame i the Studio must iclude the 1 i the ame. The secod AirSpeed you add to the Studio must iclude 2 i the ame, ad so forth. You caot skip a umber i the Studio ame. For example, you must use studioame 1, studioame 2, studioame 3 ad caot use studioame 1, studioame 3, ad studioame 4. Addig the Studio to Your WorkGroup Studio support (icludig status) eeds the Avid AirSpeed I/O Peripheral applicatios ad the Editor Igest ad Playback Support istalled o the Avid editig system. Uistallig either removes Studio fuctioality from the Avid editig system. The Studio is cofigured i the TMCliet.ii tab of the Avid editig applicatio s Trasfer settig dialog box. A Studio is idetified usig the followig amig covetio i the TMCliet.ii tab: studioame[n] I this example, studioame is the ame etered as the Host Name o each AirSpeed i the Studio, ad N represets the umber of members i the Studio. 120

Studio Cocept This amig covetio distiguishes the AirSpeed Studio ad all other TrasferMaager Servers (icludig sigle AirSpeeds). AirSpeed ad Studio ames must also be added as a cliet o the TrasferMaager Server Cofiguratio Widow. Ivalid or iactive playback server ame etries i TMCliet.ii ca delay the Avid editor startup.
