16 Chapter 1 Coformig AFE Files Usig AFE Files Avid DS Nitris caot directly ope projects from Media Composer or other Avid editig systems. To trasfer bis, clips, or sequeces to Avid DS Nitris, you must use a itermediate file format. For the highest level of coform, use AFE (Avid File Exchage) files. AFE files are based o AAF (Advaced Authorig Format) techology. AFE files, however, are desiged especially for sharig iformatio amog Avid applicatios. AFE files let you trasfer oe or more bis, their cotets, ad iformatio about the cotets, icludig master clips, subclips, ad sequeces. You must use AFE files if you are coformig from the followig products: Media Composer Adrealie v1.5 or later Avid Xpress Pro v4.5 or later Avid Xpress DV v4.5 or later NewsCutter Adrealie FX v5.5 or later NewsCutter XP v5.5 or later AAF files from earlier versios ca still be used for coformig, but Avid recommeds usig AFE files. To coform a HDTV (high-defiitio TV) project that was offlied o a Avid editig system, the offlie sequece must be edited at the proper frame rate. The followig table lists the required Avid editig project types for differet HD formats ad frame rates. 18

For iformatio o workig with audio, see Usig Audio from a Avid Editig System o page 46. To coform a HD project, follow this basic workflow: 1. Dowcovert the HD source tapes to SD (stadard-defiitio) tapes, usig the 16:9 aamorphic aspect ratio. For 24p sources, make sure the coversio uses o-drop-frame timecode ad 2:3 pulldow, with the A frame at :00 or ay frame that eds i 0 or 5 (:05, :10, :15, ad so o). 2. O a Avid editig system, create a offlie project with the proper frame rate. 3. Capture the SD source tapes ito the Avid editig system usig a offlie resolutio. 4. Edit the sequece. 19

20 Chapter 1 Coformig AFE Files 5. (Optioal) O the Avid editig system, duplicate the fiished sequece, copy the duplicate ito a ew bi, ad decompose the duplicate. The Avid editig system creates ew master clips that use oly the media i the sequece, plus ay hadles you specify. These ew clips are ot liked to media, but are iteded for recapture. You ca delete the decomposed clips from the bi, because Avid DS Nitris recreates the clips durig the coform process. For more iformatio o decomposig, see the documetatio for your Avid editig system. 6. Export a AFE file to recreate the sequece or project o the Avid DS Nitris system. Export directly from a Avid editig system or export through MediaLog, depedig o the versio of your Avid editig applicatio. See Exportig AFE Files o page O the Avid DS Nitris system, create a sequece with a frame rate that matches that of the source tapes. 8. Import the AFE file. See Importig AFE Files o page 41 ad Creatig a Sequece ad Master Clips o page Recapture the HD media o the Avid DS Nitris system. 10. Fiish ad output the project. Sharig Compressed ad Ucompressed Media Avid DS Nitris ca share compressed ad ucompressed stadard-defiitio media with other Avid editig systems. You ca share media by usig AFE files ad Avid Uity MediaNetwork shared storage. You ca also trasfer media files over a etwork or by usig removable SCSI drives. Avid editig systems ca share two media formats: MXF: Avid DS Nitris ca lik to MXF files ad play them i real time. It ca also create ad modify MXF files ad share them with other Avid editig systems. See Sharig MXF Media o page 28. OMFI: Avid DS Nitris ca lik to OMFI files ad play them i real time. The storage that holds the media must be cofigured as Noe (readoly) i the Avid Media Storage dialog box. Avid DS Nitris caot create OMFI files. 22 Chapter 1 Coformig AFE Files Avid DS Nitris does ot support the followig formats: Progressive resolutios Multicamera resolutios AVR resolutios. You caot share caches or precomputes betwee Avid DS Nitris ad other Avid editig systems. Note the followig: If you are sharig media o a Avid Uity MediaNetwork workspace, make sure that both the offlie ad the olie systems have access to the workspace. If you are trasferrig files o a removable SCSI drive or drives, make sure that you ca correctly trasfer the drives. For iformatio o discoectig ad coectig removable drives, refer to your system setup guide ad operatig system help. If you are copyig files to a local drive (oe already attached to your Avid DS Nitris system) or a drive you ca access through the Media Idexer, locate or create a folder amed OMFI MediaFiles (for OMFI files) or Avid MediaFiles (for MXF files) o the drive. This folder ame must use the correct uppercase ad lowercase letters ad iclude a space betwee OMFI ad MediaFiles or betwee Avid ad MediaFiles. For more iformatio about folders for MXF storage, see Sharig MXF Media o page 28. If you are likig to media that does ot match the compressio of the sequece (for example, if you are likig to DV25 i a ucompressed sequece), make sure to set the optio Use the Closest Media Available i the Sequece Prefereces dialog box. 23 Workflow: Coformig AFE Files Coformig Effects Level of support: Be aware that ot every effect i the origial sequece will be completely coformed. For specific iformatio, see AFE Effects Support Table o page 48, AFE Titles Support Table o page 55, ad the Avid DS Nitris release otes. Also, durig the coform process, you ca view a log which lists ay effects ad parameters that are ot supported. Titles: Place titles i the origial sequece before you create a AFE file so that the title is coformed as part of the sequece. Avid DS Nitris does ot coform titles as master clips. Titles promoted to 3D are ot supported. Motio effects: Like titles, source-side motio effects are coformed oly as part of a sequece. Video levels: If the origial sequece icludes graphics that use video levels (ITU-R 601 levels, which iclude superblack ad superwhite ), Avid DS Nitris preserves iformatio about the video levels whe creatig master clips (through AFE files). Whe you recapture the graphics, Avid DS Nitris automatically recaptures them at the origial levels. Layered Photoshop graphics: Layered Photoshop graphics that have bee imported as layers i the origial sequece are ot coformed correctly. You eed to import the origial layered graphic ito Avid DS Nitris usig the Geerate > Import Photoshop commad. Audio effects: Audio pa, Audio EQ, ad AudioSuite plug-is are ot coformed. I the origial sequece, you ca mix dow the areas that cotai these adjustmets or effects ad the output a audio mix see Trasferrig Audio Media o page

24 Chapter 1 Coformig AFE Files Color Correctio: Color correctios made i Color Correctio mode with the Symphoy Color Correctio tool are ot coformed. For color correctios to be coformed, you must apply the Color Correctio effect from the Effect Palette, as described i the Avid Symphoy Color Correctio Guide. This problem does ot occur if you use the Avid Color Correctio tool (available with Avid editig products other tha Symphoy). Secodary color correctio is ot coformed. I Avid Symphoy, the gamma is applied i RGB space betwee the superblack ad superwhite rage while i Avid DS Nitris, the RGB gamma is applied betwee the black ad white rage. Therefore, there is a small discrepacy i coform whe coformig color corrected sequeces from Avid Symphoy with applied HSL gamma, particularly for gamma values close to 0 or much larger tha 1. Multi-cam: Multi-cam groups are ot coformed. Oly the selected clip is coformed. Foregroud level ad effects o V1: Avid DS Nitris always displays images o video track V1 as completely opaque ad igores ay settig to Foregroud Level (Opacity i Avid DS Nitris). O the Avid editig system, add Geerated Black (created through the Title Tool or as a imported graphic) beeath ay effects that use Level i this maer. Effects applied to filler: Color Correctio ad Pa ad Sca applied to filler o the top track of the origial sequece are coformed correctly i Avid DS Nitris, but other effects are ot. Coformig Matte Keys ad Alpha Chaels Matte Key clips: Place matte keys i the origial sequece before you create a AFE file so that the matte key is coformed as part of the sequece. Avid DS Nitris does ot coform matte keys as master clips. Traditioal matte keys (Matte Key effect): O the Avid editig system, Foregroud (fill) ad Matte elemets must be ested iside the Matte Key effect or the effect will ot be coformed correctly. Use the Collapse fuctio o the fill ad matte before you apply the Matte Key effect. The replace the Submaster effect with a Matte Key effect. Matte Key effects are coformed as Matte cotaiers. If the fill ad matte were ot ested o the Avid editig system, you ca fix the problem i Avid DS Nitris by cuttig the fill elemet ad pastig it ito the cotaier. Imported matte keys: Matte keys created from still graphics ad imported to a Avid editig system are coformed as Matte cotaiers with all parameters itact. However, imported graphics promoted to 3D Matte Keys are ot coformed. Avid DS Nitris replaces the 3D Matte Key as a DVE withi a Composite cotaier without the origial effect parameters. For example, if you use the U key to drag a drop-frame sequece ito a o-drop-frame sequece, the start timecode of the sequece will ot be correct. If you are coformig a clip or sequece captured from a BWF (Broadcast Wave Format) source, Avid DS Nitris marks the master clip as a tape source. As a result, you caot recapture media from the source BWF file. To work aroud this problem, do oe of the followig: - Directly relik to the origial media through shared storage - Import the media from a OMF file cotaiig embedded media. - O the Avid editig system, trasfer the media to tape. O the Avid DS Nitris system, recapture the media from that tape. However, you caot relik to BWF.aif media or ca you import a OMF file cotaiig BWF.aif or.mxf media captured i oe of the followig products: - Media Composer Adrealie - Avid Xpress Pro - Avid Xpress DV - NewsCutter Adrealie FX - NewsCutter XP For these products, relik to.wav or.mxf media, or import a OMF file with embedded.wav media. To make it easier to move files betwee products ad across platforms, use the followig guidelies whe amig files: - Do ot use the followig characters i project, bi, or other file ames: / \ : *? < > The Widows system does ot recogize these characters i file ames ad will substitute other characters, possibly makig the file ame urecogizable or causig other problems. - Do ot add spaces at the begiig or ed of a file ame. If the project icludes titles ad you are movig betwee Macitosh ad Widows systems, make sure you have the same fot with exactly the same ame (preferably from the same maufacturer) o both the Macitosh ad Widows systems. Check the fot carefully because the same fot ca have slightly differet ames. For example, Times New Roma o the Macitosh system is amed Times New Roma Regular o the Widows system. I some cases, you might eed to covert the Macitosh fot to a Widows fot by usig a fot coversio program. For iformatio o how Avid DS Nitris substitutes title fots, see Fot Substitutio for Titles o page 59. For best results, use TrueType or PostScript fots. Bitmap fots ca cause scalig problems. The origial project should ot be affected. Trasferrig Media Importig AFE Files If you are usig a removable drive to share media, discoect the drive from the offlie system ad coect it to the Avid DS Nitris system. For iformatio o coectig ad discoectig a exteral media drive, refer to your system setup guide ad Sharig Compressed ad Ucompressed Media o page 20. After you have determied the locatio of the trasferred file, you ca import it ito Avid DS Nitris. To import a AFE file: 1. Create a Avid DS Nitris project ad sequece. 2. Use the Avid Explorer to select the folder that holds the AAF or AFE file. The file opes i the AAF/AFE View. 3. Double-click the file. The imported bi or bis are displayed. 41

Creatig a Sequece ad Master Clips After you have imported the AAF or AFE file, you ca drag a sequece oto the timelie ad create master clips that are associated with the sequece. You ca also create master clips by draggig a imported clip or sequece to a bi or, for AFE files, by draggig oe or more bis to a folder. To create a sequece ad master clips: 1. I the AAF/AFE settigs, select the Create Associated Clips optio. Select this optio if you wat to create master clips by draggig a imported clip or sequece to the timelie. Deselect this optio if you have already created master clips ad you wat to avoid creatig a duplicate set. Duplicate clips are marked by the additio of a sequetial umber (001, 002, ad so o). 2. To apped the origial project ame to the master clip source ames, select the Force Creatio of Exteral Tape Sources optio. This optio distiguishes betwee clips that are created from tapes associated with the coform ad clips that are ot. 3. (Optio) To create liked clips, select Create Liked Clips for File Sources. For iformatio about liked clips, see Creatig Liked Clips i the Avid DS Nitris Capture ad Output Guide or Help. 4. Specify the path for the folder i which you wat to create the master clips after you drag a clip or sequece to the timelie. Click the browse (...) butto to avigate to the folder. Avid DS Nitris checks the path to make sure the folder is withi the project folder. 43

Ope a ew sequece i your project. Make sure the frame rate matches that of the origial project (see Coformig HD Projects o page 18). 7. Do oe of the followig: t Drag a clip or sequece from the AAF/AFE View oto the timelie. To match the timecode of the imported sequece to the timecode of the sequece i the timelie, hold dow the U key while you drag the sequece to the timelie. t Drag clips or sequeces, or both, from the AAF/AFE View ito a bi. t Drag oe or more bis from the AAF/AFE View ito a folder. The coform process begis. Depedig o the legth of the sequece or the umber of items, a progress bar is displayed. Titles created i this 16:9 aspect ratio (created i the 16:9 viewer) coform correctly. However, if the sources were dowcoverted to 16:9 letterbox ad titles were created i the 4:3 viewer, they do ot coform correctly. There are two optios to correct this problem: I the Avid editig system, create the titles i a 16:9 viewer. Creatig Real-Time Graphics from Coformed Titles After you have coformed the sequece, you might eed to adjust coformed titles, so that they play as real-time graphics. The basic guidelies for real-time play are: All graphics objects must be applied o RGB chaels (ot o RGBA chaels). Apply the Graphics effect directly o the clips ad remove the filler. I additio, make sure the graphics objects meet the followig real-time coditios: Oly the Airbrush, Color Bled, ad Cutout effects ca be played i real time. Color Gradiet caot be played i real time. Properties of the graphics objects must ot be aimated, except for the traslatio. Oly traslatios i the X or Y axes ca be played i real time. Aimatio that moves at differet speeds caot be played i real time. Make sure all graphics objects move i the same directio (either X axis oly or Y axis oly) at the same speed. Because Avid DS Nitris creates AAF files from master clips oly, you eed to use the Timelie to Clip commad to create a AAF file for a sequece. 71 Coformig OMF Compositios Coformig OMF Compositios OMF (Ope Media Framework) files facilitate the trasfer of digital media from oe system to aother. They ca cotai both media ad compositio iformatio. A OMF compositio is basically a advaced form of a EDL. It cotais istructios for trasitios, timewarps, keys, titlig, ad some other effects iformatio. Avid DS Nitris preserves all the layerig iformatio from a OMF file, so that you ca select evets ad layers that you wat to recreate o the timelie. Support for OMF media is limited to the import ad export of audio media oly. Avid DS Nitris ca import oly OMF 2.0 files. Avid DS Nitris supports may types of Media Composer ad Symphoy effects. For a complete list, see OMF Level of Support o page 80. However, the preferred method of coformig sequeces is through AFE files. For more iformatio, see Usig AFE Files o page 16. Opeig a OMF File You ca import OMF files created o other systems. By usig the OMF file format to trasfer sequeces from a offlie system to Avid DS Nitris, you ca quickly import sequeces with most of the offlie editig ad effects work itact. To ope a OMF file: 1. Do oe of the followig: t I the view switcher, click the OMF butto. t Select View > Sigle-Istace Views > OMF. 2. From the OMF view, click the Load OMF butto ad select a file from the Ope dialog box. It s a good idea to do both, so that whe a clip is deleted from the timelie, you always have the master clip i a folder. You also have the optio of importig ay audio media i the OMF file. Coformig a OMF File without Audio Media To coform a OMF file without audio media: 1. Ope a ew sequece i your project. 2. Load a OMF file ito the OMF view. 3. OMF files that are exported at a frame rate must be coformed i the timelie. OMF files that are exported as sample-accurate must be coformed i a audio cotaier. 2. Select oe of the followig optios: - Import All Media to import all the audio media cotaied i the OMF file ito the curret project. - Oly Import Used Media to import oly the audio media used i the actual sequece ito the curret project. 11. From the Sample Rate list, select a samplig rate at which to covert your audio media. The higher the samplig rate, the more accurate the coversio will be. Make sure the sample rate you select matches the sample rate of your curret sequece. If the sample rates do ot match, o audio media will be available for playback. To play back the audio media, you would have to chage the sample rate of the sequece i the Sequece Prefereces dialog box. 12. From the Bit Depth list, select a bit depth value. The higher the value, the more precise the audio coversio will be. 13. From the Capture To list, select a storage area o which your audio media will be stored. 77

Sice o video media was imported, the video clip icos that appear whe you ope the folder i a bi are red, idicatig that o media has bee captured yet. Effects that are ot supported by Avid DS Nitris are marked by effect bars that have bee deactivated. These effect bars act as markers to idicate where the effect was origially placed. Although Avid DS Nitris may ot be able to import certai effects, it will keep ay keyframed iformatio, which you ca use as a referece to recreate the effect. Exportig a OMF File If there are ay usupported effects, a user message is displayed that asks you if you would like to view the geerated list. If you click Yes, the list is geerated ad displayed i the Coform Error Log dialog box. The Coform Error Log dialog box displays the i ad out-poits of the effect, the ame of the origial effect, as well as a brief descriptio of the type of error that occurred. 15. 79 Coformig OMF Compositios Oly the audio portio of your sequece ca be exported to a OMF file. Ay video clips o the timelie are igored whe you create a OMF file. No audio effects are exported, but edit poits are created to show where effects were origially placed. You eed DigiTraslator, a Pro Tools optio, to covert the OMF files ito a format that Pro Tools ca read. If DigiTraslator is ot supplied with your Pro Tools applicatio, you eed to purchase ad istall it. See the Digidesig web site The OMF file may cotai both the media ad iformatio about all the timecode, trasitios, ad supported effects. Oce you ve created a OMF file of the audio portio of your sequece, you ca save it ad the trasfer the iformatio to aother system. Avid DS Nitris exports oly OMF 2.0 files. To create ad save a OMF file with audio media: 1. From the OMF view, click the Timelie to OMF butto to create a OMF file of the audio portio of the curret sequece. The Export Compositio dialog box opes. 2. Select the Embed Media optio to iclude the media i the OMF file you are creatig. 79

If the Cosolidate optio is ot selected, the etire audio clip will be icluded i the OMF file. OMF Level of Support 4. From the Bit Depth list, select 16 (16-bit audio) or 24 (24-bit audio). The higher the bit depth value, the more precise the audio coversio will be. 5. I the Hadles Legth box, do the followig: - Add a umber i the Heads text box if you wat to add extra frames before the material used o the timelie. These additioal frames will be icluded i the OMF file for source material comig from tape oly. - Add a umber i the Tails text box if you wat to add extra frames of material after the ed of the material used o the timelie. These additioal frames will be icluded i the OMF file for source material comig from tape oly. 6. Click OK. The Save As dialog box opes. 7. Navigate to a appropriate folder, type a ame i the File Name text box, ad the click the Save butto. All the iformatio obtaied from the audio tracks o the timelie are saved as a OMF file i the locatio you specified. You ca ow trasfer it to aother system. Avid DS Nitris supports may effects that are imported via OMF from Media Composer 10.0 ad later ad Symphoy 2.1 ad later. However, the level of support ca vary; cosult the followig table ad leged for full details. The preferred method of coformig sequeces is through AFE files. 85 Coformig EDLs Coformig EDLs Avid EDL Maager Opeig a EDL File Avid DS Nitris supports the import of edit decisio lists (EDLs). A EDL is a detailed list of the edits cotaied i a sequece, icludig all the timecode ad supported effects iformatio required to recreate the sequece i a olie sessio. Avid DS Nitris accommodates EDLs from may differet systems. It is compatible with the stadard EDLs, as well as CMX, GVG, ad OMF formats. The EDL file is orgaized ito a series of chroological istructios called evets. You ca use these evets to create clips or to completely recreate the sequece o the timelie. The Avid EDL Maager is a applicatio that lets you covert betwee differet EDL formats, such as Soy, GVG, or CMX. You ca also covert EDL files to OMF 1.0 files. Sice Avid DS Nitris oly supports OMF 2.0 files, you will eed to further covert the OMF 1.0 files, so that they ca be read by Avid DS Nitris. You ca use the Avid EDL Maager to read EDL files from RT-11 disks ad the save the files i CMX or GVG format for import ito Avid DS Nitris. Avid DS Nitris caot read RT-11 disks. You ca also use the Avid EDL Maager to create a EDL that displays additioal types of iformatio, such as commets or patches. You ca specify the differet audio ad video tracks i the sequece, as well as specify the assembly modes that the olie edit cotroller uses whe creatig your sequece. The EDL view lets you import a EDL file produced o ay exteral system, ad capture material based o the edits i that EDL. 85

After importig your EDL ito Avid DS Nitris, you ca select the evets that you wat to recreate. To do this, you ca either log the evets as master clips i the Avid Explorer, or edit the list oto the timelie, or both. You ca the capture media from either the clips i the Avid Explorer or o the timelie. You ca oly recapture logged clips created from a EDL that origiated o tape. Avid DS Nitris does ot support recapture from file for logged clips created from a EDL. Clip ames are created from the evet umber. If you have more tha oe EDL i a project, however, there will be at least two clips with the same ame. To avoid the coflict, the ame of the EDL is appeded to the clip ame. Before coformig your EDL, you should check if there are ay layers to be composited. Offlie editors ofte create multiple EDLs because the covetio is to put separate layers ito separate EDLs. Ay audio or video evets i the list are automatically loaded oto the appropriate tracks. Durig the coform process, you ca set up the appropriate heads ad tails values for each clip. This is importat if you eed additioal material at the begiig ad ed of each clip to do mior chages durig the fial stage of the edit. You ca also cofigure the audio chael patchig for each tape. If you recreate your sequece o the timelie, you may wat to process a rough cut ad proof it agaist the origial EDL. You ca do this by reloadig the EDL oto a ew video track, addig a fade or crop effect to the video track ad processig it, ad the playig the sequece to make sure that the cuts ad trasitios o the two tracks occur i syc. If the proofig sessio is successful, you ca the remove the video track you added ad cotiue to add effects ad fiishig touches to the origial sequece. 89

Creatig Layers from a EDL Receivig multiple EDLs for differet levels i a composite occurs frequetly. For example, there may be a EDL for the backgroud ad aother for the foregroud. Whe this happes, both layers must be i syc o the timelie. You ca either place the layers o video tracks, which allows more tha oe layer to be active at a time, or you ca place these two layers i a cotaier clip.for more iformatio, see Creatig a Composite Cotaier Clip i the Avid DS Nitris Editig Guide. To create a layer from a EDL: 1. Ope a ew or existig sequece i your project. 2. Import or ope a edit list i the EDL view. 3. From the EDL view, click the Coform EDL butto. Avid DS Nitris igores the curret settig of the Ripple mode whe performig a EDL to timelie. By default, all EDL coforms are performed with the Ripple mode off. Modifyig a EDL File Chagig the Source Tape Name Avid DS Nitris lets you modify certai properties of the EDL after you ve loaded it ito the EDL view. You ca chage the ame of the source tape, as well as ripple the source timecodes. If your source tape ame is too log, or the ame of the tape has chaged betwee the offlie ad the olie, you ca modify the ame of your tape directly i Avid DS Nitris. Oce you ve loaded a EDL ito the EDL view, you ca modify the source ame of ay oe of the sources. To chage the source ame of a tape i a EDL: 1. Load a EDL ito the EDL view. 2. Right-click the mai area of the EDL view ad select Chage Source Name. The Chage Source Name dialog box opes. 3. From the Old Source Name list, select the ame of the tape you wat to chage. 4. Type the ew ame i the New Source Name text box ad click OK. The Source Name is chaged i the EDL view. 93

To ripple all source timecodes i a EDL: 1. Load a EDL ito the EDL view. 2. Right-click the mai area of the EDL view ad select Ripple Sources. The Ripple Sources dialog box opes. 3. I the Ripple By timecode box, type the amout by which you wat the source timecodes to move. To ripple the source timecode backwards, type the amout preceded by a mius ( ) sig i the Ripple By timecode box. 4. Click OK. The source timecodes of all your source tapes are modified by the amout you specified. To ripple the source timecode of oe evet i a EDL: 1. Load a EDL ito the EDL view. 2. Select the evet i the Edit list. 3. Right-click ad select Ripple Sources. The Ripple Sources dialog box opes. 4. I the Ripple By timecode box, type the amout by which you wat the source timecode to move. 95 Coformig EDLs To ripple the timecodes of all evets from oe source: 1. Load a EDL ito the EDL view. 2. Right-click the mai area of the EDL view ad select Ripple Sources. The Ripple Sources dialog box opes. 3. Select the Apply To All Edits From This Source optio to modify the source timecode of oe of your source tapes. 4. Select the ame of the tape from the list. 5. Type the amout by which you wat the source timecodes to move i the Ripple By timecode box ad click OK. All the timecodes for that oe source tape are modified by the amout you specified. Exportig a EDL File If you wat to perform certai tasks o aother system, you ca create a EDL of your curret sequece, save it to file, ad the trasfer it. Avid DS Nitris creates a EDL for each track of your curret sequece ad for some effects. Depedig o the track, the EDL cotais iformatio about the timecode, trasitios, ad supported effects. Oce you ve created EDLs of the curret sequece, you ca save them ad trasfer the iformatio to aother system. To create ad save EDLs of the curret sequece: 1. From the EDL view, click the Timelie to EDL butto to create oe or more EDLs of the curret sequece. 2. If Avid DS Nitris created more tha oe EDL, select the EDL that you wat to display from the EDL ame list. 3. Click the Save EDL butto to save your EDL to file. The Save As dialog box opes. 4. Navigate to a appropriate folder, type a ame i the File Name text box, ad click the Save butto. The EDL is saved i the locatio you specified. 95

96 Chapter 2 Coformig OMF, EDL, ad ALE Files Pritig a EDL File Whe you eed a hard copy of your EDL for review or wat to keep a hard copy as a referece, you ca prit oe out from withi the EDL view. You ca set the umber of copies to prit, as well as the orietatio of the page. Proofig To prit a EDL file: 1. Load a EDL ito the EDL view. 2. From the EDL view, click the Prit butto. The Prit EDL dialog box opes. 3. I the Number of Copies text box, type the umber of copies you wat to prit. 4. Select a page orietatio for the EDL. 5. Click the Prit butto. The EDL is prited o your default priter. To chage your default priter, modify the priter settigs i Widows. If you recreated your sequece o the timelie, you may wat to process the rough cut, ad proof it agaist the origial EDL to make sure that the timig is correct. To proof the EDL to timelie: 1. Reload the EDL oto a ew video track. Make sure you deselect the Overwrite Video Track optio. 2. Add a diagoal wipe or crop effect to the video track. 3. Process the effect. 4. Play the sequece to make sure that the cuts ad trasitios o the two tracks occur i syc. If the proofig sessio is successful, you ca remove the video track ad cotiue to add effects ad fiishig touches to the origial sequece. 96

97 Coformig ALE Files Coformig ALE Files Avid DS Nitris supports ALE (Avid Log Exchage) files a file format specifically desiged to hold iformatio about log files geerated by other Avid systems. ALE files cotai oly iformatio about the source material, so you ca t import sequeces, effects or other higher level iformatio. Although the ALE file format was desiged for log files geerated by Avid editig systems, may other systems ca output ALE files as well. You ca use ALE files to trasfer iformatio from MediaLog to Avid DS Nitris. MediaLog is a tool that helps you select ad log footage before your editig sessio. Although you ca log footage with Avid DS Nitris, usig MediaLog ca free up your Avid DS Nitris system for editig ad effects. After loggig shots, you ca use Avid DS Nitris to digitize ad edit the footage. MediaLog is shipped with your Avid DS Nitris system. For complete iformatio about MediaLog, see the MediaLog Help or the Avid MediaLog User s Guide (available i Adobe Acrobat format o the MediaLog CD). MediaLog is also available i the Dowload area of the Avid DS Nitris Customer Support web site. You ca import bis created i MediaLog ito Avid DS Nitris. To do this, either: Export the bi as a ALE file. You ca the load the ALE file ito Avid DS Nitris ad create logs. Export the project ad bis as a AFE file. I the Ope dialog box, select a file. The selected ALE file appears i the ALE Import view. Load ALE Create Logs ALE Ifo For iformatio about the ALE view, click the Help butto. You ca view the global properties of a ALE file, which icludes the locatio of the file ad the values of various global properties, such as video/audio format, fps, ad more i the ALE Import view. To get iformatio o a ALE file: t Click the Ifo butto. 98

99 Coformig ALE Files Loggig Clips from a ALE File After you ve imported a ALE file ito Avid DS Nitris, you ca select the clips you wat to log. However, before you ca log master clips, the clips must have associated values for the followig properties: Ed Name Start Tape (or a global tape property) Tracks If ay of these properties are missig a associated value, the Create Logs butto appears dimmed ad you eed to supply the missig value. To log master clips from a ALE file: 1. Load a ALE file ito the ALE Import view see Importig a ALE File o page Select the clip(s) you wat to log i a bi by clickig them. To select more tha oe clip at a time, select a clip, hold dow the Ctrl key ad click the others. If o clips are selected i the ALE Import view, Avid DS Nitris creates logs for every clip. 3. I the ALE Import view, click the Create Logs butto. The Create Logs dialog box opes. 99

The default folder is displayed i the text box at the top of the dialog box. Click the browse (...) butto to select a ew folder. 5. To add material before the i-poit ad after the out-poit of all tape sources, type the appropriate umber of frames i the Heads ad Tails text boxes. 6. If you eed to recofigure the audio tracks, select a tape ame from the Tape Name list ad assig the audio tracks to the audio chaels of your clip by clickig i the audio chael routig matrix. You ca assig the audio tracks differetly for each source ame. 7. Click the Set butto after you have assiged the audio tracks for each tape ame to save the settigs. 8. Click the Create Logs butto to begi creatig logs from the ALE file. I the Avid Explorer, master clips are created for each selected clip. Oce the clips have bee logged, you ca capture the media at ay time. Oly source material from tape ca be recaptured from clips logged from a ALE file. 100
