1 Issue 11, 2016 Editoria Message Dear Reader, Neary quarter of a century back, the idea of inteigent buiding had surfaced. In the past 15 years or so, the idea evoved into smart buidings, thanks to breakthrough technoogies. Today, the definition of 'Smart Buidings' has acquired new dimensions due to changing ifestye, increasing awareness on energy efficiency, rapid urbanization and security concerns. As India moves towards achieving its 100 Smart City goa, embracing technoogies to achieve green, safe and productive environment wi become the means for an increase in the demand for smart buidings. Smart buidings empoy communication and automation technoogies to integrate different buiding subsystems, which enhance the quaity of human ife whie ensuring the overa energy efficiency and security of the buiding infrastructure. These sub-systems incuding HVAC, Lighting, Fire Protection, Access Contro Systems, Surveiance, Smart Meters, Water, UPS, Eevators, etc. share information to optimize the performance of the buiding. One of the biggest chaenges, when it comes to making buidings smart on a arge scae, is to integrate various systems with the atest generation of smart buiding equipment. This underines the roe of a system integrator who understands, depoys and integrates technoogies ike communication network, automation systems, and IT patforms that are critica components of any Smart Buiding with an objective to minimize operationa cost in the ong run. 2 Industry Trends ielv : Makes operation simpe Smart Buidings are becoming more and more popuar as they reduce energy costs, enhance productivity and buiding operations and support sustainabiity efforts. If one were to ask: What makes a buiding smart? the answer is simpe: A buiding is smart if it makes you fee comfortabe and secure and is economica in terms of operationa costs. Be it a Metro Station, Airport or Shopping ma, to make such faciities smart, infrastructure owners invest in various systems - HVAC, Lighting, Security and Access Contros. These systems are packaged under Extra Low Votage (ELV) systems. ELV systems are becoming a necessity for smart buidings to make buiding infrastructure more inteigent, interconnected and efficient. They are used for security, communication, ighting, air-conditioning and heating. It incudes systems such as fire detection 2 and aarms, voice evacuation, voice and data communications, pubic address, access contros, intrusion detection, CCTV, audio-visua, ce phone and wireess distribution, pus other such auxiiary systems. Traditionay, ELV systems are suppied by various OEMS under different contracts: HVAC contros with mechanica services; access contro and ighting in eectrica services, etc., which run on proprietary networks as we separate teephone, data and teevision networks. To operate and run these systems, OEMs provide their own workstations aong with software appication. Each system has its own contro system which communicates over different communication protocos. This invoves incurring of huge costs towards separate software appications, PCs, pus there wi be dupication of hardware, software, cabing and

3 patform where every connected system communicates and shares a of its data via standard open protoco which improves the operation of the faciity. It aso ensures that the data coected from every system is made avaiabe for use by other cient appications. Information technoogy has a key roe to pay in the deveopment and operations of dynamic Smart Buidings. For exampe, a Smart Buiding HVAC system can automaticay precoo a buiding or reguate temperature based on number of occupants inside the buiding or outside temperature. Based on operationa conditions, the system wi take corrective actions which ead to reduced energy demand / consumption. Further information can be shared with the eectricity grid to support grid reiabiity through demand response. The major features of an IELVS design are: networking equipment with imited functionaity and contro faciity. In such a scenario, the operator has to manage mutipe patforms to monitor and contro the faciity as information is distributed and avaiabe at each ELV sub-system. The integration of these mutipe sub-systems on a common network patform is therefore, becoming essentia. The ELV systems integration approach supports the instaation of common cabing and pathways instead of individua systems, thus resuting in improved tota system monitoring and management, and significant cost reductions. It requires in-depth knowedge of technoogies and a strong team of domain experts who design, integrate and deiver Integrated ELV Systems that meet diverse needs. Modern ELV System runs on IP based communication which reduces investment in cabes and cabes trays (pathways). Reduces major efforts required during design and instaation which cause unexpected deays on project time ines. Open architecture uses open communication protoco, standards and specifications which avoids dependency on singe vendor. Expansion, upgrades and instaation of news systems becomes easy and can be sourced from different suppiers. Integrated ELV soutions are consideraby easier to troubeshoot in case of faiure as it invoves minima cabing and interconnection. These systems can be operated remotey as we as managed and reconfigured which saves maintenance costs. It offers additiona features and functionaities compared to traditiona ELV Systems. In concusion, rapid depoyment of cost-effective ELV Systems, integration of IT, buiding automation and contros are paying a significant roe in the faciities management industry. Asset owners are reaising the importance of Integrated ELV systems which are scaabe, secure and open patforms that offer cost savings and enabe energy savings as we as sustainabe improvements. 6 Case Study L&T's ibms enhances Data Center operationa efficiency About Customer Sify Technoogies Limited (Sify), an Indian information and communications technoogy company, offers end to end ICT soutions encompassing Teecom Services, Data Center Services, Coud & Managed Services, Transformation Integration Services and Appication Integration Services. With over 13 years of operationa and technica experience, Sify has an impressive portfoio comprising over 2,00,000 sq. ft. of white space spread across 6 Tier III Data Centres, 15 Tier II Data Centres and 6 State Data Centres, buit to exacting specifications and best-in-cass goba standards. Need In today's IT andscape, business requirements are changing rapidy. To address such chaenges, Sify decided to impement an Integrated Buiding Management System that woud hep in centraised monitoring and contro of the data center faciity. Rapid project execution was a key requirement of this project to ensure high yied from the investment. L&T was seected by Sify for its abiity to deiver integrated soutions within a very chaenging time frame of three months for every 10,000 sq ft area of each foor.

7 L&T was assigned the responsibiity of impementing an Integrated Buiding Management system for 40,000 sq ft area covering four foors, incuding engineering, project management, instaation and commissioning. L&T deivered a compete buiding management system which incuded subsystems ike Access Contro System, Gas Based Fire Suppression System, Fire Aarm System, High Sensitivity Smoke Detection System, Rodent Repeent System, Addressabe Water Leak Detection System, PA System CCTV, BMS Controers and BMS Software. The soution is based on L&T's widey proven BMS patform LTAB, which combines a high eve of customisation, user friendy and open patform technoogies which enabes integration of various third party patforms over open protoco. The biggest chaenge faced during execution was to integrate a data center systems and equipment into a singe, cohesive contro & monitoring system. 8 C&A bags R-APDRP project from CESU of Odisha The Contro & Automation (C&A) business of L&T Eectrica & Automation, a eading Systems Integrator company in India, was awarded a project by Centra Eectricity Suppy Utiity (CESU) of Odisha under Government of India's Restructured Acceerated Power Deveopment and Reform Programme (RAPDRP). The depoyment wi cover 12 towns incuding the twin cities of Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack. The project's main objective is to hep CESU in ascertaining the AT&C (Aggregate Technica & Commercia) osses in these towns, which wi be a base ine for taking measures to further reduce the osses.
