7 Usig This Guide This maual is iteded for Avid MetaFuze users from begiig to advaced levels. Uless oted otherwise, the material i this documet applies to the Widows, Liux ad Macitosh operatig systems. It covers the features ad hardware of all models ad applies to all operatig systems. Therefore, depedig o the hardware model that you have purchased, your system may or may ot cotai certai features ad hardware that are covered i the documetatio. 11 1 Usig Avid MetaFuze Avid Metafuze provides a complete offlie-to-fiish file-based workflow whe used i cojuctio with Avid Media Composer ad Avid DS. Metafuze allows the geeratio of MXF media from DPX, R3D, TIF, JPG, AVI ad QuickTime files, which ca be offlied i Avid Media Composer, coformed for fiishig i Avid DS. Film ad High-Resolutio Workflows usig MetaFuze Sigle-frame files geerated from digital video cameras, film scaig processes or CGI applicatios, eed to be coverted to playable media so that they ca be read by a Avid editig applicatio like Avid DS or Avid Media Composer. Avid MetaFuze merges cosecutive sigle-frame files (with metadata cotaied as part of the format) ad raw data files from a digital camera ito a MXF file. Avid MetaFuze supports differet files icludig R3D, DPX, TIF, ad JPG. It ca also trascode QuickTime ad AVI sequeces ito MXF files. Ay file type supported by Avid DS or third-party parsers ca be read by Avid MetaFuze. Still-file parsers ca be writte for both MetaFuze ad Avid DS usig the parser SDK which is available as part of the Avid DS SDK. High-resolutio digital files could origiate from digital cameras, film-scaig facilities, or CGI applicatios. The files iclude R3D, DPX, or TIF. Step 1: Group high-res files ito MXF files If you wat to offlie i Avid Media Composer, start by usig MetaFuze to covert the DPX/R3D/TIF files ito MXF playable media i a HD resolutio. Import this MXF ito Avid Media Composer for offlie editig. Step 2: Edit ad produce fial AFE After editig the sequece o a Avid Media Composer, export the sequece as a AFE for the fiishig o Avid DS. Whe exportig your sequece for coform, there are some details to be cosidered. We recommed that you read the followig whitepapers available o Usig HD-RGB with Film i HD-based DI Workflows Avid/RED Workflow Guide Step 3: Coform AFE O Avid DS, you ca coform the AFE ad coect to the origial DPX/R3D/TIF files. 12

13 Opeig a Project i MetaFuze I the case of DPX files, ecessary iformatio such as KeyKode (key umber) ad timecode is iserted as metadata ito the DPX file durig the scaig process. If the DPX files do ot cotai the timecode iformatio, the ALE is required i order to make the ecessary correspodece to the associated DPX files. The ALE is usually supplied by the film-scaig facility or output by MetaFuze/Avid Media Composer. The MXF file is ot required for the fiishig process but it could be imported oto a separate video track i Avid DS ad used as part of the coform check process. Depedig o your system cofiguratio, may high-resolutio formats are playable i real time for a specific list of these formats, see the Avid DS support web at Whe editig high-resolutio projects where real-time playback is ot achievable, you ca use the proxy mode to apply effects ad view the results i HD 4:2:2 or HD 4:4:4. Step 4: Output to tape or file You ca output the fial sequece to master as a series of DPX or Cieo images (with a appropriate LUT) for a film recorder. You ca also output ay other SD or HD formats as required. Opeig a Project i MetaFuze Whe you start the MetaFuze applicatio, it automatically opes a ew empty project. A project i MetaFuze orgaizes ad displays all the elemets that are related to the project such as, source file folders, the groups of files created from scaed folders, ad the iformatio required to create MXF media files. If you are startig a ew project, you ca proceed to Scaig your Folders o page 15. To ope a existig project: 1. Select File > Ope Project. 2. Select the ame of the project that you wat to ope. The selected project opes ad displays the project compoets. Customizig the MetaFuze Widow The views ad toolbars withi MetaFuze ca be moved to a differet positio withi the widow, or ca be tor off ad dragged outside of the mai widow. I additio, the colums i the Groups view ca be rearraged or removed as ecessary. 13

14 1 Usig Avid MetaFuze Click ad drag a view by its title bar. Shaded blue area will appear to idicate where the view ca be dropped. Select a existig preset view (if ay). Click to save your colum settigs to a preset. Click o the extreme left to select a toolbar. To move a view withi the mai widow: 1. Select a view or toolbar that you wat to move. To select a view, click its title bar. To select a toolbar, click the extreme left where you see the vertical dotted lie. 2. Drag the view to ay positio withi the widow where you would like to place it. The cursor positio determies the destiatio. If aother view exists i that locatio, it will automatically move over, ad a shaded blue area will appear to idicate where your selectio ca be placed. Release your mouse to drop the selectio ito place. 14

15 Scaig your Folders Some views ca be udocked from the mai widow by clickig ad draggig their title bar outside the mai widow. Doig this creates a ew widow that you ca stretch out if you eed to see the values more clearly. It also allows you more viewig space for the other views i the mai widow. The chages that you make to the widow display are automatically saved ad reloaded each time you ope MetaFuze. To chage colum headigs i the Group view: t t Select a colum headig ad drag it left or right to a ew positio. Release your mouse butto to drop the selected colum ito place. or Click the Add/Remove Colums butto. Select/deselect ay colums that you wat to display, ad click OK. Ay chages that you make to the colum display ca be saved by clickig the Save Preset butto. You ca save your settigs uder a ew preset file ame or modify a existig oe. Scaig your Folders MetaFuze is desiged to sca specified folders ad create groups of files based o similar file types foud i these folders. The sca process groups together ay files that have cosecutive fileames, key umbers, or timecodes. The image resolutio (same width ad height), is also take ito accout. Oce the groups have bee formed, they ca be selected for trascodig. To sca your folders: 1. Select Actios > Sca Folders. 2. Browse to the folder where your files are located. The folders ca be o your local workstatio or o remote storage. (To locate folders o a remote storage, you might eed to use the full pathame, for example, \\<machie_ame>\<folder_ame>.) 3. I the list of available folders, select a folder ame, ad click the Add Folder butto to add the folder to the Selected paths list. 15

Select ad add as may folders as you wat. 5. Optio. You ca reorder the selected paths usig the Up ad Dow Arrow keys. 6. Optio. To remove a folder from the list of selected paths, select the path ad click the X butto. 7. Click the Optios butto, ad specify the criteria by which you wat to group your scaed files see Sca Folders Dialog Box o page By default, the Fileame is always cosidered as oe of the criteria. Select the Timecode ad/or Key umber optios if you d like to use this data as well. 9. You ca chage the priority order of the criteria by clickig the Up or Dow Arrow keys. 10. If you wat to specify the type of files to search for, the click the File Types butto. Select oly the file types that you eed. This filters out ay uwated file types ad makes the scaig process much faster. 11. Select the other optios as ecessary. 16

17 Trascodig your Files 12. Click the Sca butto to begi scaig your files. MetaFuze scas the list of selected paths ad forms groups based o the optios you have selected. Oce the sca is complete, the mai scree displays the list of groups that have bee foud i the selected paths. After groups have bee foud, you ca proceed to trascode your files. If you have selected the Show scaed iformatio optio, the Sca Details dialog box opes whe all folders have bee scaed. 13. To save the scaed group iformatio, select File > Save project. Eter a project ame that will be easily recogized whe you export your MXF data for use i other applicatios. Trascodig your Files MetaFuze coverts groups of scaed files ito playable Avid MXF media. You ca create several MXF files ad export a ALE of these files so that you ca easily import them i oe step from your editig system. As MetaFuze trascodes the files, it also embeds the required metadata for tape source, timecode, ad key umber, so that you ca later relik to the origial source media for fiishig o a editig system such as Avid DS. Metadata ca also be added to MXF files that do ot origially cotai this iformatio (for example, TIF files). Some of this metadata ca be applied as a overlay o the image, much i the same way a telecie trasfer would provide widow bur-is of the timecode ad key umber. Fially, whe trascodig, you ca also specify a format ad a codec to be used to geerate the media. 17

18 1 Usig Avid MetaFuze Drag right or left to elarge/shrik viewer sizes. To reset size, right-click o ay viewer ad select Auto-adjust. Source viewer Output viewer Group view Expad tree to show idividual files withi group Select a scaed group Detail view A XML commad script ca also be used i the Avid MetaFuze cosole mode to automatically create a list of files for trascodig. For more iformatio, see Trascodig your Files i a Batch o page 27. If you have scaed your files, the Group view at the bottom of the mai widow displays all groups that have bee foud. The Group view shows data colums for all possible objects a group, sigle-frame file, or trascode job. However, whe you select a object, the Detail view o the right will display oly the fields that are pertiet to the selected object. You ca customize the group view by addig or removig colums see Customizig the MetaFuze Widow o page

19 Trascodig your Files To trascode a group: 1. I the Group view, select a group. 2. Preview the sequece of files i the group usig the play cotrols just below the viewers. The Source viewer displays the origial images. 3. I the Detail view, you ca experimet with the Format ad Coversio Mode optios to set the best image format ad aspect ratio for your output MXF see Detail View o page 41 for defiitios of the differet settigs. The Output viewer shows you how the image will appear based o the trascodig settigs i the Details view. 4. If you eed to select a LUT for your files, click the LUT field i the Detail view. MetaFuze provides a choice of commo idustry LUTs that you ca use. You also have the optio to import a LUT that was provided with your footage see Importig a LUT o page 25. R3D files have the LUT iformatio ecoded i the files themselves, however, you ca also import a RLX file which may cotai other image settigs for the files see Importig Other Image Settigs o page You ca also select iformatio to bur-i o the frames see Burig-i Iformatio o the Frames o page If you have media that is to be used for stereoscopic display, you will eed to sca your left ad right image file groups separately see Trascodig Files for Stereoscopic Editig o page Whe you are ready to covert a group ito a sigle MXF file, click the New Trascode butto, or use oe of the keyboard shortcuts described below. A ew job is created for trascodig based o the settigs i the paret scaed group. There are some fields that are critical to your overall coform workflow, such as key umber, tape ame, TC start, film type. If you chage the settigs of these fields i the trascode job, a ico will appear ext to them to war that they are differet from the properties of the origial scaed group. 19

Simply select the trascode job, chage ay detail settigs, ad the click the New Trascode butto. The ew job will iherit the settigs from the origial trascode job. 8. Select this ew trascode job, ad i the Detail view, set the ecessary trascode optios see Detail View o page I the Detail view, click o the Folder optio, ad specify a locatio where the trascoded MXF media is to be saved. If you will be usig this media o a Avid Media Composer workstatio, you ca save the media directly to a shared media folder. Select the appropriate drive, ad make sure that you save the media i a path ame \Avid Media Files\MXF\1\. This is the specific path required by Avid Media Composer whe you are importig MXF media. 10. Click the Trascode butto to begi the trascodig, or use oe of the keyboard shortcuts described below. The followig shortcut keys are available whe selectig trascode jobs ad geeratig MXF files: Optio To select all trascode jobs To geerate MXF files for all trascode jobs selected Keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Shift-A Ctrl-Shift-T Depedig o the umber of frames i the group, this process could take some time to complete. The status bar displays a message while the trascodig process is i progress. Whe the trascodig is complete, the MXF file is available i the output folder that you specified. Oce a job is trascoded, you caot chage the settigs. To create aother MXF with differet settigs, you eed to create aother trascode job. 20

21 Trascodig your Files Trascodig Files for Stereoscopic Editig Stereoscopic imagig ivolves costructio of three-dimesioal depth iformatio from two images correspodig to pixels i the left ad right eye. MetaFuze ca trascode files for stereoscopic editorial i Avid Media Composer ad Avid DS. I MetaFuze, you eed to sca your left ad right image file groups, ad select a suitable mode to combie the left ad right eye views ito a sigle frame for the trascodig process. For Avid Media Composer you must use the Over/Uder mode with left eye o the top, ad right eye o the bottom. MetaFuze ca also combie left ad right eyes i Side by side, Aaglyph, ad Iterlaced modes, which are all supported i Avid DS. To create a stereoscopic group: 1. Sca the appropriate folders as described i Scaig your Folders o page I the Groups view, select the folders for the left ad right eyes. (The order i which you select your left ad right eye groups is importat as it determies the order i which the frames will be combied for trascodig. For Avid Media Composer editig, make sure that you select the left eye group first ad the the right.) To create a stereo group, the left ad right eye groups must be of the same file format (frame size ad resolutio) ad have the same duratio (umber of frames). 3. Click the Create Stereo Group butto. A ew group is created cotaiig the left ad right eye groups. If you eed to chage the order of the groups withi the stereo group, you ca break the group ad start agai (Actios > Breakup Stereo Group). Breakig a stereo group simply returs the left ad right eye groups to the list of stadard groups. 21

Select the stereo group ad set the ecessary optios see Details of a stereoscopic group or trascode job... o page After you have set the ecessary optios, click the Trascode butto to begi the trascodig process. Burig-i Iformatio o the Frames Bur-i data is typically used oly for the offlie stage of a project. It is useful as it provides visual feedback for loggig ad trackig footage. I the Detail view, you ca select a data field to bur-i o your images. If you wat to bur i more tha oe field, however, you eed to use the Bur-i Editor. To ope the bur-i editor: 1. Select the scaed group ad click the Bur-i butto o the toolbar. The Bur-i Editor opes see Bur-i Editor Dialog Box o page 48 for details o the settigs i this dialog box. Save butto Delete butto Select data fields to display o frame Select positio for the iformatio to be displayed. 22

23 Cofigurig the MetaFuze Trascoder 2. Select a Bur-i Preset from the list. If you wat to create a ew preset, the click the Save butto, ad eter a preset fileame. 3. Select a field from the Data colum, ad click the right arrow to add it to the display group. The field is added to the group ad displays i the Output viewer. 4. Chage the positioig of the display optios as required. Click ay of the Group level colums to chage the settigs. 5. Cotiue to add other data fields to the group. To add a lie break, select the <NEW LINE> field from the Data list. To create a separate group of fields ad place it o a differet part of the image, select the <NEW GROUP> field. 6. Click the Save butto to save your settigs. 7. Click Close to close the bur-i editor. Cofigurig the MetaFuze Trascoder If you have a multiprocessor system, you ca icrease the umber of processsig threads that will be used by MetaFuze whe trascodig sigle-frame files such as DPX, JPG or TIF. To cofigure the system trascoder: 1. From the mai meu, select Optios > Trascode Cofiguratio. 2. MetaFuze shows the umber of threads available o your system for processig. 23

24 1 Usig Avid MetaFuze 3. You ca raise the umber of threads to the maximum, but keep i mid that the processig speed is also limited by the capacity to read ad write to the hard disk. You also eed to save some threads for other processes/applicatios ruig o your system. Whe trascodig stream files such as AVI, MOV or R3D, the threads will be used to their full capacity, therefore you will ot be able to use other applicatios durig the trascodig. Usig LUTs i MetaFuze A Lookup Table (LUT) is a file that cotais a coversio table used to map a iput color value to a output color value. Whe trascodig your files ito playable MXF media, you eed to set the LUT that came with your footage so that the proper color values are retaied throughout the olie editig process. The LUT could come from the film house where the files were scaed, or simply be the LUT associated with the type of camera with which the footage was origially shot. I the case of R3D files, the LUT iformatio is ecoded with the file. I additio, if a certai look eeds to be applied o this footage, a RLX file will also be provided. This file ca be imported ito MetaFuze before trascodig your files see Importig Other Image Settigs o page 27. Settig a LUT If a LUT was provided with the files you are trascodig, the you should import it ito MetaFuze before trascodig the group. After a folder has bee scaed, you ca set the LUT that will be used for trascodig the scaed files. To set a LUT: 1. Select the group for which you wat to set the LUT. This field is oly available whe you are workig with a group of DPX or Cieo files. 2. I the Detail View, click LUT ad select a appropriate LUT from the drop-dow list. The LUT is loaded ad you ca preview the color settigs i the viewer. 24

25 Usig LUTs i MetaFuze Importig a LUT If the files you are usig have a accompayig LUT either from the film-scaig facility, the camera, or the director of photography, the you will eed to import it. To import a LUT: 1. Select the group for which you wat to import the LUT. 2. Click the Edit LUTs butto at the bottom of the mai view. 3. Select Template > From File. 4. Click Create. 5. Browse to the folder where the LUT is located, ad click Ope. The LUT is ow available as a choice withi MetaFuze. 6. Click Close. Modifyig LUTs You ca edit or create LUTs from the idustry LUTs that are provided by MetaFuze. To edit a LUT: 1. Select the group for which you wat to modify the LUT. 2. Click the Edit LUTs butto at the bottom of the mai view. This butto is oly eabled whe you are workig with a group of DPX or Cieo files. 3. I the LUT Editor, select a Template type. 4. Click Create. A ew dialog box opes with the settigs of the template. 25

These values ca be associated with ay group withi the curret project. 8. Click Close. Exportig a LUT 26 You ca save the LUT settigs ad export them for use with other MetaFuze groups or exteral applicatios. To export a LUT: 1. Select the group whose LUT settigs you wat to export. 2. Click the Edit LUTs butto at the bottom of the mai view. 3. Select the LUT that you wat to export. 4. Click the Export butto. 5. Select the folder where you wat to place the file, ad click Save. 6. Click Close.

27 Trascodig your Files i a Batch Importig Other Image Settigs Whe trascodig R3D files, you ca apply additioal settigs to ehace the look of your file. This is doe via a RLX file which cotais settigs that are very similar to a LUT. To import a RLX file: 1. Select the trascode group to which you wat to apply the settigs. 2. I the Detail View, click Import Settigs ad browse to the folder where your RLX file is located. 3. Select the file ad click Ope. The RLX file is loaded ad you ca preview the color settigs i the viewer. Trascodig your Files i a Batch You ca automate the trascodig process by creatig a batch XML file that lists all the groups to be trascoded. Creatig a XML Batch File to Trascode Files Before you create the XML batch file, you eed to have already scaed your folders ad created the ecessary trascode jobs. With the batch file, each of these jobs is coverted ito a separate MXF file. To create the XML batch file: 1. I the Group view, select the trascode job that you wat to covert. 2. I the Detail view o the right side of the scree, set the ecessary trascode optios see Create XML Batch Dialog Box o page Click the Create XML Batch butto. The Create XML Batch dialog box opes. 4. I the Script Name textbox, type the ame of the XML batch file that you wat to create. 27

This creates a.xml batch file usig a list of all the files i the trascode job that you have selected. Whe this batch file is ru, the MXF is geerated based o the settigs for this job. A.XSD referece file is also created, which is useful whe usig a third-party XML validatio tool. The XSD file is used to validate the sytax of your batch file. 7. Oce you have created your batch file usig MetaFuze, you ca edit the XML file usig a text editor ad chage your <filelist> as ecessary. For a example of a XML file, see XML Batch File Example o page Whe you execute the batch trascode commad see Ruig a Trascode Batch File o page 28. Your XML file will be validated agaist the XSD to check for the sytax ad format. To create a XML file with a third-party applicatio: 1. Geerate the.xml ad.xsd with MetaFuze. 2. Ope the.xml file with Liquid XML Studio from Liquid Techologies (you ca dowload the freeware from 3. Edit your file with Liquid Studio. 4. Use the Validate fuctio i Liquid Studio to validate your.xml file agaist the.xsd. 5. Optio. Ope the.xsd with Liquid Studio to fid the correct eumeratio values. Oce you have a valid.xml file, it ca be iterpreted by MetaFuze. Ruig a Trascode Batch File To ru the batch trascode: 1. Click the Start butto ad select Ru. The Ru dialog box opes. 2. Type cmd, ad the click OK. A Widows cosole opes. 3. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Avid\MetaFuze 4. At the prompt, type: Metafuze scriptame.xml where scriptame is your fileame. All trascoded MXF files withi a ALE must be of the same frame rate. To export a ALE: 1. Use Ctrl-click to select all the trascoded files that you wat to iclude i your ALE. 2. Click the Export ALE butto. 3. Save the file i a appropriate locatio. Importig MXF Files ito Avid Media Composer To import MXF files ito Avid Media Composer, you ca import the ALE created by MetaFuze ad lik to the associated MXF files. O the other had, you ca simply ope a bi via the Media Tool ad select the MXF files oe at a time. Either way, you eed to make sure that all your trascoded MXF files are located i the Avid MediaFiles folder as required by Avid Media Composer (drive letter:\avid MediaFiles\MXF\1). Importig MXF Files via a ALE Whe you import the ALE ito Avid Media Composer, it displays a log of all the master clips for which you ca import MXF media. You will the eed to set certai optios to lik to the master clips. 31

32 1 Usig Avid MetaFuze To import a ALE file usig bis: 1. I Avid Media Composer, right-click the bi, ad select Import. 2. Browse to the folder where the ALE file is located, select the file, ad click Ope. The bi displays all master clips that have bee imported. 3. I the bi, right-click the master clip(s), ad select Relik. 4. I the Relik dialog box, deselect the followig: - Relik oly to media from the curret project - Match case whe comparig tape ames. 5. Cotiue settig the optios ad click OK. The MXF files are reliked to the associated master clips. 6. Proceed to edit. Importig MXF Files The Media tool displays all captured video ad audio data files stored o the media drives. It also displays media that is stored o local drives directly coected to the Avid editig system ad o umaaged shared storage. You ca use it to import the MXF files that were trascoded i MetaFuze. To import a MXF file usig the Media Tool: 1. I Avid Media Composer, select Tools > Media Tool. 2. I the Media Tool Display widow, select the Media Drive where the Avid MediaFiles folder is located. For example, Video U320 (G:). The list of Projects will iclude the ame of the MetaFuze project i which you trascoded your files. (Avid Media Composer fids this ame i the metadata of the MXF file). 32

33 Exportig the AFE File from Avid Media Composer 3. Select the ame of the MetaFuze project associated with the trascoded MXF files that you wat to import. 4. Make sure that oly Master Clips is selected ad click OK. Master clips are created i the Media Tool widow for ay MXF files associated with that project. 5. Drag the clip(s) to a bi ad proceed with your editig. Exportig the AFE File from Avid Media Composer Oce the edits are completed i the Avid Media Composer, export the sequece as a AFE to Avid DS for fiishig. To export a AFE from Avid Media Composer to Avid DS: 1. Right-click the sequece ad select Sed To > Avid DS. The Sed To: Avid DS dialog box opes with the default export template. 2. Optioal: Chage the file ame. 3. Click Set to browse to the driver ad folder to which you wat to export the sequece, ad click OK. 4. Select Export Settigs 1. All curret settigs are displayed i the summary pael below. 5. Click the butto after the Export Settigs 1, ad select Avid DS from the drop-dow list. 33

Determies the criteria to be used whe groupig the files. Use the up or dow arrow buttos to set the order of the criteria. Use the key umber as the groupig criteria. Group View The Group view shows data colums for all possible objects a group, sigle-frame file, or trascode job. Whe you select a object, oly the fields that are pertiet to the selected object will display uder the appropriate colums (ad i the Detail view o the right). 37

For a stadard trascode, idicates if the film iformatio metadata should be embedded i the MXF. Displays the film type foud i the source media. If this metadata is ot foud, the the default is set to 35 mm 4 perfs. KN Start The key umber foud i the first file of the group. If key umber metadata was foud i the source file, the this field caot be chaged. If the key umber was ot foud i the source file, you will be able to eter a key umber if ecessary. 38
