9 Operatng safety Warnng G Any alteratons made to electronc components and the software can cause malfunctons. The rado, amplfer, CD changer, satellte rado, telephone* and navgaton module are nterconnected. When one of the components s not operatonal has not been removed/replaced properly, the functon of other components may be mpared. Ths condton mght serously mpar the operatng safety of your vehcle. We recommend that you have any servce wk on electronc components carred out only by qualfed personnel. Warnng G In der to avod dstracton whch could lead to an accdent, the drver should enter system settngs wth the vehcle at a standstll and operate the system only when road, weather and traffc condtons permt. Bear n mnd that at a speed of just 30 mp/h (approxmately 50 km/h), your car s coverng a dstance of 44 feet (approxmately 14 m) every second. COMAND supples you wth nfmaton to help you select your route me easly and gude you convenently and safely to your destnaton. F safety reasons, we encourage the drver to stop the vehcle n a safe place befe answerng placng a call, consultng the COMAND screen to read navgatonal maps, nstructons, downloaded nfmaton. Introducton Operatng safety Whle the navgaton system provdes drectonal assstance, the drver must reman focused on safe drvng behav, ncludng attenton to traffc and street sgns, and should utlze the system s audo cues whle drvng. The navgaton system does not supply any nfmaton on stop sgns, yeld sgns, traffc regulatons traffc safety rules. Ths always remans your personal responsblty when you drve. DVD maps do not cover all areas n all routes wthn an area. 9

31 Menu system The menu system allows f easy operaton of COMAND. Example: FM menu 1 Soft keys area 2 Man area 3 Status bar The functons currently assgned to the soft keys are dsplayed n the soft key sectons 1. A maxmum of fve soft keys may be dsplayed on each sde of the man area 2. 31

32 At a glance Menu system The man area 2 shows messages and settngs. You can change the settngs by operatng the system. The status bar 3 s dvded nto three areas. Left sde: The current operatng mode s ndcated. In ths example: Rado Center: The status of the current operatng mode other selectable functons are ndcated. In ths example: FM = current waveband 1 = memy locaton of staton, e.g. 1 Rght sde: 9:33 = actual tme ( page 33) = recepton strength of the moble phone* 32 n = text message n the nbox ( page 215) G = phone call actve Menu functons and submenus Usng the soft keys, functons can be swtched ON OFF, submenus can be called up. E.g. the rado menu: The FM/AM soft key swtches between FM and AM band. The Scan soft key starts/stops the channel scan. In some stuatons, soft keys may not have any functon and are not operatonal. A soft key wthout functon appears shaded out. E.g.: Soft keys on the left and rght sde Extng from submenus Use the Back soft key 1 to ext a submenu. The dsplay swtches to the next hgher menu level. The system does not accept settng modfcatons whch have not been sted. There are exceptons where pressng the Back soft key wll also ste new settngs. These exceptons, whenever applcable, are referenced on the followng pages.

33 At a glance Menu system Permanent tme dsplay The system permanently shows the actual tme n the status bar. The tme only appears n the status bar when the gnton s swtched on. If there s no phone connected, the feld strength ndcat s not shown. 34 At a glance Quck reference COMAND Quck reference COMAND 34 You have the followng optons to control the system: at the COMAND at the multfuncton steerng wheel (refer to vehcle Operat s Manual) Ths Operat s Manual descrbes the control at the COMAND. Unless otherwse ndcated, the descrptons and llustratons refer to the COMAND. Swtchng the COMAND control unt on and off Swtchng on F an explanaton of starter swtch postons, refer to vehcle Operat s Manual. Turn the key n the starter swtch to poston 1 2 f the COMAND was swtched off by turnng the key n the starter swtch to poston 0 and removng t. Press e. In both cases, the system wll actvate the operatng mode whch was actve when the system was swtched off. If the key s not n the starter swtch n poston 1 2, the system wll automatcally stop after around 30 mnutes. Swtchng off Turn the key n the starter swtch to poston 0 and pull the key out. Press e. Volume When the audo s playng, the volume knob wll adjust the audo volume, and also the volume f telephone and navgaton. Durng a telephone call (talkng rngng), the volume knob wll adjust the telephone voce and rnger volume. The volume f the navgaton announcements can only be changed whle an announcement s beng made. When you adjust the volume, the system wll automatcally ste the settng f the current operatng mode.

35 At a glance Quck reference COMAND Adjustng the volume At the COMAND, turn the rotary control at the e key. Press J I on the multfuncton steerng wheel. The volume s turned up down dependng on the drecton of rotaton the key pressed on the multfunctonal steerng wheel. The system remembers the volume settng when t s swtched off. When the system s swtched on agan, the volume may be lower hgher than at the tme when the system was swtched OFF. Ths wll be the case when the volume was adjusted to a value outsde a certan range when the system was swtched off. Automatc volume control The automatc volume control feature adjusts the volume dependng on: vehcle speed ambent nose nsde the vehcle Ths functon s actve all the tme and cannot be turned on and off. 35

Settng balance and fader In any audo source operaton: Press the Bal/Fad soft key. Cross-hars are dsplayed. The hzontal har lne ndcates the balance settng. The vertcal har lne ndcates the fader settng. You can now make balance and fader settngs. Push the joystck to H h. Move the cross-hars hzontally and adjust the balance. Push the joystck to g G. Move the cross-hars vertcally and adjust the fader. Push the joystck to F and f to move the cross-hars smultaneously n vertcal and hzontal drecton. Press E the Back soft key. Wat untl the dsplay changes. The new settng s saved. 36

Dfferent bass and treble settngs are possble f the followng operatng modes: Rado: FM-, AM- and Weather (WB) bands Sngle CD (CD ) and CD changer (CD ) In any audo source operaton: Press the Bass Treble soft key. The Bass Treble menu wll appear. Settng Bass and Treble The new settng s saved. Press the Bass Treble soft key and keep t depressed to move the curs contnuously. Release the soft key to set the current value. MP3 CD operaton (MP3 ) Satellte rado When you adjust bass treble, the settngs apply to other sources wthn the group, but not to the other modes. F example, f you adjust the bass whle lstenng to FM, that same bass level apples to AM and Weather band, but not to satellte rado CD/MP3 CD. Push the joystck to H h. Bass Treble s adjusted. Press E the Back soft key. 37

38 At a glance Quck reference COMAND The sound functons are avalable f the followng operatng modes: Sound functons Rado: FM-, AM- and Weather (WB) bands Sngle CD (CD ) and CD changer (CD ) MP3 CD operaton (MP3 ) Satellte rado The followng sound functons are avalable: Default Settngs: COMAND sets the default settngs (Bass, Treble, Bal/Fad) f the actve source mode. Standard: COMAND sets the sound lnear f the center of the vehcle. Speech: Playback optmzed f language comprehensblty. LOGIC7 Surround: Surround playback. You can use dfferent sound functons f the modes mentoned above. E.g.: F rado operaton the functon Standard, f CD operaton the functon LOGIC7 Surround. LOGIC7 Surround sound offers a sound qualty super to conventonal stereo sound. If the rado recepton s po, the system should be swtched back to standard stereo playback. Swtchng back to standard stereo playback may mprove audo qualty. Actvatng the sound functons In any audo source operaton: Actvate the man menu f the respectve operatng mode ( page 31). Press the Sound soft key. The Sound menu wll appear. Push the joystck to g G to select the desred functon. Press E. The functon s actvated. 38

39 At a glance Quck reference COMAND Rear vew camera The Rear vew camera s actvated by shftng nto reverse gear. The area behnd the vehcle appears n the COMAND screen f COMAND s already swtched on. If COMAND s swtched on whle n reverse, the Rear vew camera dsplay wll appear mmedately followng the COMAND startup screens. Swtch back to the COMAND operatng mode Shft nto P, N D. Press A, c, b, {, a, B whle n reverse to actvate the crespondng man menu ( page 31). 43 Audo Audo operaton The CD the MP3 soft key s avalable, dependng on the medum nserted n the CD AUDIO slot. The CD soft key s avalable f a CD changer s connected to the COMAND. Press A agan. Selectng an audo source In the Audo menu, press the soft key f the desred audo source. Swtchng off Press J agan. COMAND wll also deactvate f you Press A, B, g, h If an audo submenu s dsplayed, press the Back soft key untl the Audo menu s dsplayed. Mutng Swtchng On Press J. The system mutes the actve audo source and the ß symbol s dsplayed n the status bar. The soft keys on the left sde are greyed out n some submenus. Change the volume at COMAND the multfuncton steerng wheel Operate the joystck Press any keypad button except # Press j k at the multfuncton steerng wheel f the audo menu s selected Press any soft key. 43

44 Audo Rado operaton Rado operaton Swtchng to rado operaton In the Audo menu, press the Rado soft key. The Rado man menu wll appear. The staton last tuned to wll begn to play. Health hazard G The CD drve and CD changer are Class 1 laser products. There s a danger of nvsble laser radaton when you open damage the cover. Do not remove the cover. The CD drve and the CD changer do not contan any parts whch can be servced by the user. F safety reasons, have any necessary servce wk perfmed by qualfed personnel. Only use CDs, whch bear the label shown and that confm to the compact standard (IEC 60908). You can therefe only use CDs wth a maxmum thckness of 1.3 mm. Audo CD operaton The system may not be able to play CDs wth copy protecton coped CDs.! Use only CDs wth a dameter of 12 cm, do not use 8-cm CDs. An 8-cm CD adapter may cause damage to the CD drve and to the CD changer and should not be used. Your CD drve has been desgned to play CDs whch crespond to the IEC standard. If you nsert thcker data carrers, e.g. ones that have data on both sdes (one sde wth DVD data, the other sde wth audo data), they cannot be ejected and wll damage the drve. 51

Problems may also be encountered durng playback of userwrtten CDs wth a stage capacty of me than 700 MB. Permssble MP3 CDs In MP3 mode COMAND can read CD-R and CD-RW CDs. Permssble fle systems The permtted fle system f COMAND s ISO9660/Jolet f CD-R and CD-RW. Mult sesson CDs Mult sesson CDs nclude mxed fle types (e.g. MP3 and audo CD) n ether successve random der on the dsc. In MP3 mode, COMAND wll ntegrate audo CD tracks nto the dsc s folder structure. The CD audo track folder wll appear frst followed by folders contanng MP3 tracks. Fle structure When creatng a MP3 CD, you can ganze MP3 tracks nto folders. A folder can also contan addtonal folders. A CD may have a maxmum of 255 folders n total. A maxmum of 255 tracks are permssble per folder. Mathematcally a maxmum of tracks would result. However, ths amount s usually not reached snce MP3 requres approx. 1 MB stage per mnute recded. Track names and folder names When creatng a MP3 CD, you can assgn names to the MP3 tracks and folders. COMAND uses these names n MP3 mode f the crespondng dsplay. Please note the followng when assgnng folder and track names: Track and folder names must contan at least 1 character. Track names may contan up to ether thrty ffty characters dependng on the CD fmat. If a name exceeds ths character lmt, COMAND wll not be able to dsplay t n full. Track names must have the extenson mp3. 66

Example of a crect track name: Track1.mp3 Empty folders folders contanng data other than MP3 audo CD tracks wll not be dsplayed by COMAND. Permssble MP3 fmats COMAND suppts the MPEG1 AudoLayer3 fmat. Permssble bt and scan rates Tps on creatng MP3 tracks In everyday speech, ths fmat has been replaced by the desgnaton MP3. Fxed and varable bt rates up to 320 kbps Scan rates from 24 khz - 48 khz It s recommended to use MP3 tracks wth a bt rate of128 kbps hgher and wth a scan rate of 44.1 khz hgher. Lower rates may mpar qualty. Ths s partcularly true f the sound functon LOGIC7 Surround has been actvated. Tps on copyrght The musc tracks that you can create f play back n MP3 mode are generally copyrght-protected under applcable nternatonal and natonal laws. In many countres, the reproducton of copyrghted materal s not permtted, even f only f personal use, wthout the express pr consent of the copyrght holder. Please check the current copyrght laws f your country and comply wth them. These restrctons do not apply f example to your own compostons and recdngs, f recdngs f whch authzaton has been obtaned from the copyrght holder. 67

Route gudance s conducted n the usual manner,.e. wth navgaton announcements and route gudance dsplays, map splt screen. The DVD map may contan areas that are only partally dgtzed wth unverfed roads although they are wthn a dgtzed regon. Due to ncomplete dgtzaton, the route shown on the map may dffer from the actual road/traffc stuaton. If you follow the route shown on the map, f example, t s possble that you could drve the wrong way down a one-way street, that a street cannot be drven on that the road s of questonable qualty. When usng route gudance on a unverfed road n a partally dgtzed area, you must therefe be sure to observe all relevant traffc regulatons and the course of the road. Drve carefully and keep n mnd that all relevant traffc regulatons and the course of the road always take prty over the route shown on the map. Warnng G If the gn and destnaton are located very close to each other, the system may not provde the shtest path to the destnaton when you are travellng n an unverfed area. In most cases you wll be drected to a verfed road closest to the destnaton. Ths may appear to be a long and unconvenent route but t s safer. At your own rsk, you may choose to drve on the unverfed roads to the destnaton. Map dsplay Wthn these areas the dsplay shows a splt screen wth the map on the left-hand sde and a drecton arrow on the rght sde pontng to the destnaton nstead of the symbol f the next drvng maneuver ( page 136). Route presentaton Usually the map hghlghts the actve route on verfed roads wth a blue lne. After route calculaton, the route may contan unverfed road sectons. Here, the exact route gudance s suppressed and these route sectons wll appear as blue dotted lnes. Ths type of lne e.g. connects two verfed road sectons, whch are dsplayed as blue lnes connects the end of a verfed road wth a stopover destnaton located on an unverfed road. 135

It s the drver's sole responsblty to determne the sutablty of the route. Off-road routes may be of varyng condtons and ther approprateness f use may be affected by varous facts such as tme of day, tme of year and mmedate weather condtons that cannot be judged taken nto consderaton by the COMAND system. If there s no road shown on map at the current poston, the vehcle s OFF ROAD. COMAND s able to gude you to an OFF ROAD destnaton from an OFF ROAD locaton. COMAND wll nfm you wth the OFF ROAD ndcaton and the drecton arrow pontng to the destnaton. Crespondng announcements may be audable. An OFF ROAD destnaton s not tselve recded on the map. Do not place anythng on the lowered dsplay panel (.e. do not use as a shelf). Placng objects on the lowered dsplay panel may result n damage to the dsplay COMAND unt whch s not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Lmted Warranty. Updatng may take several mnutes. Durng updatng, the operaton of COMAND s restrcted. You cannot swtch off the system. Startng an update DVDs are loaded and ejected at the navgaton module. The navgaton module s located behnd the dsplay unt of the COMAND ( page 166). There are two l buttons. One s on the dsplay unt 2. The other s located left of the DVD NAVIGATION slot 1 behnd the dsplay. Swtch the COMAND on ( page 34). Ejectng Press l. The dsplay unt moves fward and then tlts down. Shtly after that, the progress bar appears. After some tme, the progress bar reaches 100%. The update s completed. You can now operate the navgaton system agan. The message Press EJECT to close wll appear. If l on the dsplay unt s not pressed wthn 20 seconds, eght successve seres of two beep tones wll sound to remnd you to return the dsplay to ts closed poston by pressng l on the dsplay unt.
