EICON Remote Control User s Gude Installaton of the Wrng Harness (for MRX-12 through MRX-48) 1. Verfy that the host system wrng s n good condton and that there are no shorted solenods, relays, or feld wrng crcuts. 2. Connect a P-30 wrng harness(es) (pgtal) to the devce to be controlled followng the nstructons ncluded wth the wrng harness(es) (see Statons chart below). The P-30 wrng harness s consdered the same as a unversal wrng harness. When connectng more than one wrng harness, there s no need to connect the tan, pnk, or red wth the yellow strpe wres (from ports 13-24, 25-36, or 37-48). (See Illustraton 1.) Any unused wres should be nsulated to prevent shortng. Use small wre nuts or a good qualty electrcal tape even f the wres are cut off. 3. Verfy that there are no connectons made to any crcut that uses any voltage other than 24VAC. Pump starters sometmes use 115VAC and even 230VAC, whch would cause serous non-warranty damage to the remote controller. 4. If the remote controller s used wth more than open host controller at the same tme, there must be a system common wre connected to all controllers. If there s more than one transformer used n these systems, verfy that all the transformers are n phase wth each other before connectng the remote controller. If there s an out of phase transformer, there wll be transformer damage, controller damage, a blown fuse, a trpped crcut breaker, or all of the above. 2 Expanson Port Cable Connecton (ADAPT-1 and ADAPT-2 cables sold separately.) Do not use a unversal wrng harness when usng ths expanson port. Power s suppled through ths port when t s used--no other connectons are requred. Port compatble controllers nclude Irrtrol, Superor Sterlng, and others. Contact EICON for other compatble controllers. Before connectng to or dsconnectng cables from the expanson port, verfy that the CONNECT-DISCONNECT swtch s n the DISCONNECT poston. 1. If usng the unversal verson of the remote controller, connect an extenson cable (Part No. ADAPT-2) to the 9-pn D-Shaped connector on the rear of the remote controller. Illustraton 2 Installaton of Adapt 1 Cable 1. Install the Adapt-1 cable as ndcated n Illustraton Verfy that the lockng barbs on the whte female connector of the Adapt-1 cable engage the lockng tab of the remote ready connector. Do not nstall ths connector backwards or wth pns offset. 3. Knock out the plug n the bottom of the controller cabnet and nstall the black crcular connector usng the screws ncluded wth the Adapt-1 cable assembly. 4. Use one of the screws to retan the cap strap. 5. Always replace the cap when ths connector s not n use. Illustraton 3 Adapt-1 cable Adapt-1 cable Adapt-2 cable See step 2 above to nstall Adapt-2 cable 2. Connect the other end of the extenson cable (the end wth the crcular connector) to a controller equpped wth an adaptor cable (Part No. ADAPT-1). If power s appled to the host controller, the PWR ndcator on the front of the recever should begn blnkng. Place the CONNECT- DISCONNECT swtch n the CONNECT poston. The remote controller should be operatonal at ths tme. 3. Proceed wth step 5 under Remote Controller Operatng Instructons. Contact sellng dstrbutor or EICON for assstance f needed. 2

Fuse Selecton Do not vary fuse 1 (F1) from ts value of 2 AMP. Fuse 2 (F2) s factory set at 2 AMP. The F2 fuse protects the host transformer that provdes 24 VAC power. If a fuse other than what the factory provdes s requred, nstall a fuse n the F2 fuse holder that wll protect the host 24VAC transformer. For example, f the host system has a transformer that s only capable of actvatng 3 outputs at the same tme, use fuses that wll open when more than 3 outputs are actvated. If there s a 1.5 amp fuse n the host controller, use a 1.5 amp or smaller rated fuse, etc. If a fuse opens or blows because of excessve current demands or shortng, a red ndcator next to the defectve fuse wll llumnate. Repar the cause of the problem and replace the defectve fuse wth a fuse that has a ratng no greater than recommended above. Damage caused by mproper selecton of fuses wll vod the warranty. Handheld Transcever Instructons EICON reserves the rght to change specfcatons on any product wthout notce. The model and brand name of equpment suppled by EICON may change. 1. Verfy that the battery and the antenna are nstalled. Verfy that the battery s charged. Spare batteres and chargers are avalable. 2. Select channel 1 wth the channel selector located on top of the transcever (Illustraton 4). (Channel selecton may vary wth specal frequency orders.) 3. Turn the volume control knob (Illustraton 4) to the rght to turn the transcever on. 4. Two-way voce communcaton and the remote operaton of selected outputs are now possble. Squelch adjustments may be necessary. 1. Connect the wrng harness for the frst 12 outputs to the 1-12 extenson. Do not make repeated or jerky nsertons. Only the 1-12 connector should have the Tan (24VAC) and Pnk (COMMON) wres connected to the host system. Do not connect the Tan or Pnk wres to anythng on the 13-24, 25-36, or connectors f so equpped. The pnk wre n the 1-12 connector should always be connected to the valve common termnal or wre. The tan wre n the 1-12 connector should always be connected to the 24VAC source (the leg of the 24VAC transformer that s not connected to the valve common and gves an AC voltage readng of 24VAC n relaton to the valve common). 2. Install the suppled antenna or an approprate antenna accordng to the antenna manufacturer s nstructons. Be sure that there s not an electrcal connecton between the cabnet and any metal antenna parts (ncludng connectors). Verfy that there s not a connecton by usng an OHM meter. 3. If used, connect the extenson to the harness, the extenson to the harness, and the extenson to the harness. 4. Check to see f the PWR lght s blnkng. If t s blnkng, the remote controller should be operatonal. Illustraton 4 Antenna Push-to-talk button EICON S A <B C> Channel adjustment Volume adjustment Remote Controller Operatng Instructons If an EICON remote controller does not have the tmng optons, any outputs actvated wll reman on untl they are turned off usng the handheld transcever or untl power s removed. A varety of features and optons are avalable. One feature that s often over looked s the lock feature (refer to step 8 below). Ths feature prevents nterference from other dentcal remote controller operators that happen to be n close proxmty. Optonal PL (prvate lne) s avalable for both the recever and the handheld whch elmnates nterference wthout the need for addtonal key entres * # 3

5. When a handheld transcever s used, an address code s needed to gan access to the controller. If the address code has not been changed, there s a threedgt code located on the rear of the remote controller. Most handheld rados requre that the PTT (Push To Talk) button be pressed whle usng the keypad. If the handheld rado was provded by EICON, one hand operaton s possble and recommended by frst enterng the key strng wth the keypad and then pressng the Dal key above the keyboard. Usng ths method wll also help prevent errors. To gan access to a remote controller, press the * (star) key 2 tmes followed by the three dgts of the code, then the # key. (Use only gentle fngertp pressure on the keyboard as any physcal damage to the keyboard vods the keyboard warranty.) Pressng keys **348#, wll address a remote controller wth an address code of 348. The PWR ndcator on the remote controller wll double the blnk rate after addressng. Once addressed, any output can be actvated by enterng the number of the output desred followed by the # key. (What s meant by output n ths sentence?) (Is there a lst of numbers for the varous outputs?) Pressng keys 23# wll turn on output No. 23 n the remote controller addressed n the example above. If the recever s wthn vsual range, the PWR ndcator wll ncrease ts blnk rate ndcatng that the recever has been addressed. The blnk rate wll contnue flashng at the faster rate untl the recever has been locked. See No. 8 below. (Tmng opton equpped remote controllers wll turn off all outputs and lock themselves after 30 mnutes of beng addressed.) Always lock the remote controller presently addressed before addressng another remote controller. See No. 8 below. 6. Addtonal outputs can be actvated by enterng the number of the desred output followed agan by the # key. (Be aware that numerous outputs can be actvated and keep n mnd the lmts of the host system.) The master output s actvated any tme one or more outputs have been actvated. Pressng keys 8# wll turn on output No. 8. Pressng keys 13# wll turn on output No. 13. Pressng keys 19#*#*#*# wll turn output No. 19 on and off usng the # key as the ON swtch and the * key as the OFF swtch. Notce that no number keys were pressed after the ntal output (19) keys. **348# 23# 19#*#*#*# The master output can be actvated by tself by enterng the # key only. If an output has been prevously actvated, that output s remembered and wll come on when the # key s entered. 7. To deactvate an output, enter the number of the output to be turned off followed by the * key. All outputs can be turned off at the same tme by pressng the * key twce. Pressng keys 8* wll turn off output No. 8 f t was on. Pressng keys 13* wll turn off output No. 13 f t was on. Pressng the keys ** wll turn off all outputs at the same tme. 8. The standard lockng code s 96* f no specal tmng codes are desred. (The lockng code n earler controllers s 46*). Lockng prevents accdental tamperng. Re-entry s requred to make any changes to the status of the remote controller once an ext (lockng) code has been entered. Enter and send (by pressng the Push-to-Talk button) the key sequence **123#**4#96*. Ths addressed a remote controller wth an address of 123, actvates output number 4 and locks the remote controller from further nstructons all n one transmsson (and wll leave the selected valve(s) runnng for up to 30 mnutes). Enter and send the key sequence **123#**5#96*. Ths turned off output number 4 from the above example usng the ** keys and then turned on output number 5. It then locks the remote controller from further nstructons all n one transmsson and wll leave selected valve(s) runnng for up to 30 mnutes. It s more tme-consumng to lock the remote controller every tme outputs are operated snce more key entres are requred, but ths method s recommended only when nterference from other remote controller operators s encountered. Lockng the remote controller provdes excellent rejecton of other sgnals. Smultaneous and sequental tme-out of actvated outputs s possble usng one of the Syrnge Tmng Ext Codes lsted below. Sendng the key sequence **123#8#9#34#45#72* wll actvate outputs 8, 9, 34, and 45 for 2 mnutes from the tme the 72* ext (lock) code s entered. All of the outputs entered n ths example wll cease at the same tme usng ths method. Once the syrnge tmng ext code s entered, the remote controller s locked from all further nstructons. Ths prevents accdental tamperng. Re-entry s necessary to make any changes to the status of the remote controller at ths pont. Send the key sequence **123#4#96*. In ths example, remote controller number 123 was addressed, output number 4 was turned on, and then the controller was locked usng the 96* (30 mnute) ext code. 4

Send the key sequence **123#**5#75*. In ths example, remote controller number 123 was addressed agan, the ** turned off output number 4 from the prevous example, output number 5 was turned on and then the remote controller was locked agan usng the 75* (5 mnute) ext code. Output number 5 wll reman on for 5 mnutes or untl changes are made. Send the key sequence **123#**6#7#23#75*. In ths example, remote controller 123 was address agan, the ** turned off output number 5 from the prevous example, outputs 6, 7, and 23 were turned on and, snce the 75* ext code was used, wll reman on together for 5 mnutes. Syrnge Tmng Ext Codes (handheld operaton) 71* = 1 mnute 81* = 11 mnutes 72* = 2 mnutes 82* = 12 mnutes 73* = 3 mnutes 83* = 13 mnutes 74* = 4 mnutes 84* = 14 mnutes 75* = 5 mnutes 85* = 15 mnutes 76* = 6 mnutes 86* = 16 mnutes 77* = 7 mnutes 87* = 17 mnutes 78* = 8 mnutes 88* = 18 mnutes 79* = 9 mnutes 89* = 19 mnutes 80* = 10 mnutes 90* = 20 mnutes 46* = 30 mnutes n older controllers 96* = 30 mnutes After usng any ext code above, access can be reganed to ths or other remote controllers by repeatng step 5 above. The status of the outputs wll not be changed (before the syrnge tme expres) when the controller s locked or re-addressed unless outputs are purposely turned on or off whle the remote controller s addressed. 9. Move several feet away from the controller before attemptng to use the handheld rado. CAUTION: Some electronc controllers are very senstve to nearby rado transmssons. Tmed Sequental Syrnge Mode 1. The sequental syrnge mode s actvated/de-actvated by selectng output No Turn on output No. 95 by sendng the key sequence 95#. At ths pont any outputs that were on wll be turned off. 3. Enter any outputs to be ncluded n the automatc tmed sequence. The lowest numbered output wll be actvated as t s entered and any prevously entered hgh output wll be turned off. The hgh numbered output s stll remembered as part of the automatc tmed sequence. 4. To begn the tmng process, ext or lock the remote controller usng the desred syrnge tmng ext code from the lst above. All entered outputs wll run, one after the other, n ascendng order, for the amount of tme specfed by the syrnge tmng ext code. Tmed sequental mode may be ended by ether allowng the sequence to tme out or by sendng ** wth the handheld transcever whle the remote controller s addressed. 5

Sngle Steppng Mode 1. The sngle steppng or step mode s actvated by selectng output No Turn on output No. 91 by sendng 91#. At ths pont the last output operated or entered n the multple output mode wll turn on f the # key s pressed. If no output was selected, output number 1 s automatcally selected. 3. Send the No. 3 key to step to the next hgher output. 4. Send the No. 1 key to step to the next lower output. 5. To turn off the currently selected output, send the * key. 6. Send the # key to turn the currently selected output back on. 7. The recever can be locked by enterng 96*. 8. To select the multple output mode from the sngle steppng mode (and turn off sngle steppng), turn off output No. 91 by sendng 91*. Changng the Remote Controller Address Code 1. Remove the four enclosure screws and remove the top of the enclosure. 2. Locate three small square rotary swtches labeled 1ST DIGIT through 3RD DIGIT (see Illustraton 5). 3. Usng a small regular screwdrver, set the swtches to the code desred. Do not have power appled when the top of the remote controller s removed. Verfy that there are no antenna cables or other wres postoned where they wll be damaged when replacng the top. Damage to these cables wll be a non-warranty repar. Illustraton 5 Antenna Installaton The antenna requrements of remote control systems can vary wdely. Influental factors nclude range, terran, atmospherc condtons, obstacles and rado traffc. Installaton s accomplshed by connectng the factorysuppled rubber-ducky antenna to the BNCstyle connector located on the front of the remote controller (Illustraton 6). Although not usually necessary, enhanced antennas may be requred. Antennas are avalable through local dstrbuton or EICON. The antenna should be connected before power s appled to the remote controller. DO NOT allow the exposed metal BNC connector or any metal exposed antenna parts to come nto contact wth the metal enclosure or any ground. If the connector s shorted to ground, a fuse wll blow. Verfy that the antenna s not shorted to ground or cabnets by usng an OHM meter f necessary. If the antenna s nstalled nsde a metal enclosure, range wll be mpacted. Remote Controller Testng When the recever s not addressed, the PWR ndcator blnks slowly. When the recever s addressed, the PWR ndcator blnks rapdly. Holdng the PTT key and any key on the handheld transcever keypad (Illustraton 7) causes the PWR ndcator to stop blnkng and reman llumnated. Ths technque provdes a method of testng all of the keypad keys as well as most of the remote controller components. (Some custom suppled and specal order handheld rados wll not transmt a constant tone and therefore wll not allow ths knd of testng.) S A <B C> * Illustraton 6 Illustraton 7 EICON # 6

Troubleshootng Gude The remote controller wll not operate outputs but the PWR ndcator blnks. 1. Confrm that the Pnk wre n the 1-12 wrng harness s connected to the COMMON termnal and the Tan wre s connected to the 24VAC source. 2. Verfy recever operaton by pressng and holdng a key on a workng handheld transcever and notce f the PWR ndcator on the recever stops blnkng. If the ndcator does stop blnkng when the key s held down, communcatons are good enough to attempt operatons. Notce the blnk rate of the PWR ndcator. If t s blnkng 1 tme per second, the recever has not yet been addressed. When properly addressed, the PWR ndcator lght wll blnk 2 tmes per second for standard remote controllers. Specally equpped remote controllers may blnk up to 20 tmes per second when addressed. 3. Verfy that the address settng s correct. Remove the top cover of the remote controller recever and notce the settng of the address swtches. When replacng the top cover, be careful not to pnch the antenna cable or the rado data module cable between the retanng screw bosses or enclosure halves. Repars that are necessary because of damage to these cables s not a warranty tem. 4. If the recever s not addressed, press the followng keys of the handheld transcever: **nnn# where n s the correspondng dgt of the 3 dgt address code. The PWR ndcator should begn blnkng more rapdly. 5. If the PWR ndcator blnks at the rate of 2 tmes per second or faster, attempt to turn on a selected output by pressng the followng keys on the held held transmtter: n# where n s the number of the selected output. The selected output should now be on. If the output(s) operate normally, the remote controller s operatonal. 6. If the output does not operate normally, check the OHM readng of the selected output(s) load wth a known good OHM meter and verfy (n harness 1-12) that the PINK wre of the harness s connected to the COMMON wre of the system and the TAN wre s connected to a source of 24VAC. The PWR ndcator does not blnk or llumnate 1. Verfy wth a voltmeter that there s 24 VAC between the Pnk and Tan wres n the 1-12 wrng harness. 2. Check for defectve, blown or open fuses n the recever by observng the ndcators next to the fuses n the rear panel. Replace fuses f necessary wth the type ndcated by the placard above the fuses and check for the reason for the blown fuse(s). An antenna sheld that s shorted to a cabnet, shorted solenods or nternal problems wth the remote controller tself can cause blown fuses. Use only factory specfed fuses to avod non-warranty repars. The remote controller operates normally but relable range s 300 yards or less and other recevers seem to have normal range. 1. Check antenna connectons and proper antenna nstallaton at the remote controller. For proper operaton, antennas must be mounted outsde and at least slghtly above any metal obstacles and/or enclosures. 2. Large obstructons such as buldngs or terran can affect relable range. Enhanced range capable (hgher gan) antennas and cables are avalable for nstallatons where recepton s a problem. 3. Verfy that the battery n the handheld transcever s n good condton and fully charged. If the handheld transcever s heavly used, replace the battery at least once a year. Never leave the handheld transcever or battery chargng for extended perods of tme. 16 hours s always enough tme to fully charge a battery. 4. If none of the above s the problem, return the remote controller recever and handheld transcever to the factory for servce. The remote controller operates normally but fuses fal when specfc outputs are actvated. 1. Check the resstance of the solenods that are operated by the remote controller wth an OHM meter to locate any that may be shorted. Replace or repar defectve solenods or wrng. 2. Verfy that there are not an excessve number of solenods connected to a sngle output on the remote controller. When an output s actvated wth the handheld transcever, t only remans actvated for 30 mnutes. There s an automatc tmeout n the remote controllers that provdes a safety shut down of all actvated outputs after 30 mnutes of the last addressng of the selected remote controller. If t s desrable to have an output stay on longer than 30 mnutes, addressng and extng the remote controller wthout specfyng any output(s) can reset the automatc tmer. 7

The handheld transmtter seems to work but some keys are questonable. Stand wthn vsual range of a workng remote controller. Press and hold 1 key at a tme on the handheld transcever. Observe the blnkng of the PWR ndcator on the front of the remote controller. If the key that s held s workng properly, the PWR ndcator wll stop blnkng n the ON state. Repeat ths test for all of the keys on the handheld transcever untl all of them have been tested. If any keys fal to stop the blnkng of the PWR ndcator, verfy that the battery s fully charged and the channel selector s properly postoned. The keypad or other portons of the handheld transcever mght be n need of repar f problems persst. The remote controller operates the outputs connected to the frst host controller, but outputs connected to other host controllers do not operate from the remote controller. 1. Verfy that there s a common wre connectng all host controllers together. If the common wre does not connect all controllers, only those valves wth a common wre connected to the remote controller wll operate. 2. Check to see f the same problem occurs at other host controller locatons. If the remote controller operates normally at other locatons, verfy all wrng and voltages at the locaton where the problem occurs. If the problem perssts, return the remote controller for repar. Someone else s usng a remote controller wthn recepton range of my remote controller and they are operatng my valves. 1. Secure mode s not beng used. Use the secure mode (page X) whle nterference from other remote controller operators perssts. 2. The remote controller has not been locked. Use any of the ext codes to lock the remote controller. See number 8 under Remote Controller Operatng Instructons earler n ths manual. Outputs that are not connected to valve crcuts are gvng a 24VAC readng even though they have not been turned on. The remote controller does ts output swtchng wth an electronc devce called a Trac. Tracs leak enough voltage to cause most voltmeters to ndcate system voltage when there s no load on the Trac. An open valve wre wll have the same effect as an output that has no wre or load. Notce that a system n good workng order gves a readng of 0VAC or very near 0VAC on deactvated outputs that are connected to loads such as solenods or relays.
