4 1 Intrductin 1.1 Overview This dcument describes the means f physical intercnnectin between the Wanderbx Du and the varius telecm netwrks at the wiring level. The dcument prvides recmmended line prtectin mechanisms and specified classes f device that shuld be used t prvide adequate surge prtectin. 8 3 Hardware Installatin Befre yu begin the actual installatin, review the safety instructins and preinstallatin guidelines that fllw. 3.1 Imprtant Safety Instructins When using yur Wanderbx Du, basic safety precautins shuld always be fllwed t reduce the risk f fire, electric shck, and injury t persns, including the fllwing: Read and understand all instructins. Fllw all warnings and instructins marked n the prduct. Unplug this prduct frm the wall utlet befre cleaning. D nt use liquid cleaners r aersl cleaners. Use a damp clth fr cleaning. D nt use this prduct near water (fr example, in a wet basement). D nt place this prduct n an unstable cart, stand, r table. The prduct can fall, causing serius damage t the prduct. Slts and penings in the cabinet and the back r bttm are prvided fr ventilatin, t prtect it frm verheating; these penings must nt be blcked r cvered. This prduct shuld never be placed near r ver a radiatr r heat register. This prduct shuld nt be placed in a builtin installatin unless prper ventilatin is prvided. This prduct shuld be perated nly frm the type f pwer surce indicated in the manual. If yu are nt sure f the type f pwer surce t yur building, cnsult yur dealer r lcal Pwer Cmpany. The mains pwer scket utlet must be lcated near the prduct and must be easily accessible t allw plugging/unplugging. D nt allw anything t rest n the pwer crd. D nt lcate this prduct where persns walking n it will abuse the crd. Never push bjects f any kind int this prduct thrugh cabinet slts as they can tuch dangerus vltage pints r shrt ut parts that culd result in a risk f fire r electric shck. Never spill liquid f any kind n the prduct. T reduce the risk f electric shck, d nt disassemble this prduct, but take it t a qualified serviceman when sme service r repair wrk is required. Opening r remving cvers can expse yu t dangerus vltages r ther risks. Incrrect reassembly can cause electric shck when the prduct is subsequently used. Unplug this prduct frm the wall utlet and refer servicing t qualified service persnnel under the fllwing cnditins: When the pwer supply crd r plug is damaged r frayed. If liquid has been spilled int the prduct. If the prduct has been expsed t rain r water.

9 If the prduct des nt perate nrmally by fllwing the perating instructins. Adjust nly thse cntrls that are cvered by the perating instructins because imprper adjustment f ther cntrls can result in damage and will ften require extensive wrk by a qualified technician t restre the prduct t nrmal peratin. If the prduct has been drpped r the cabinet has been damaged. If the prduct exhibits a distinct change in perfrmance. Avid using a telephne (ther than a crdless type) during an electrical strm. There can be a remte risk f electric shck frm lightning. D nt use the telephne t reprt a gas leak in the vicinity f the leak. WARNING: It is recmmended that an ICASA apprved lightning prtectin device be used n the Pwer as well as the PSTN lines. If lightning prtectin is nt used it will invalidate the warranty.

10 3.2 PreInstallatin Guidelines Only trained service technicians shuld remve the unit cver. Inside parts have hazardus vltages. D nt cnnect equipment in wet cnditins r during a lightning strm. 3.3 Installatin Optins Rack munt The unit may be frnt r back munted in a standard 19 rack. Preinstallatin Guidelines The maximum recmmended ambient temperature is 30ºC. Internal rack temperature shuld be cnsidered fr safe peratin. D nt restrict airflw vents when installing the unit in the rack. Mechanical lading f rack shuld be cnsidered s that the rack remains stable and unlikely t tip ver. Ensure that a reliable chassis earthstrap r bar is maintained in a rack system. This unit is intended t be cnnected t earth grund, refer t sectin 4.8 belw fr the recmmended surge prtectin wiring cnfiguratin. Install the unit in a rack as fllws: Psitin and attach the left and right munting brackets t the unit using the pan head rack munt screws supplied within the rack munt kit. Place the unit in a 19 rack. Align the unit s munting brackets with the rack s munting hles and install screws with star washers. See vendr specific instructins fr rack installatin. Ensure the unit is placed firmly in the rack Desk munt The Wanderbx Du can be lcated n any sturdy, flat surface. Befre lcating the unit n a tabletp, read the lcatin guidelines belw: WARNING: If installing n a tabletp r any ther flat surface, we recmmend that yu stack n mre than fur units tgether. Preinstallatin Guidelines The surface must be sturdy. Avid expsing the unit t excessive vibratins. Keep the unit away frm wet r dusty areas. The area must nt exceed the temperature and humidity guidelines utlined in the prduct datasheets. Leave at least 3 clearance surrunding the unit. D nt cver vent hles n tp f unit. Lcate the unit n a tabletp as fllws: Place the unit n a desk, tabletp, r any flat, slid surface.

11 Ensure the unit will nt slip r fall frm the surface. 12 3.4.2 Pwer The Wanderbx Du unit is pwered by cnnecting the AC/DC pwer adapter t the Pwer input f the unit. Use nly the Wanderbx Du pwer adapter unit supplied with yur prduct. 16 4 Surge prtectin mechanisms & recmmendatins 4.1 Wanderbx Du surge prtectin specificatins The Wanderbx Du prvides the fllwing surge prtectin levels n the available telecm interfaces: Analgue (FXS & FXO) secndary (intrabuilding prtectin) BRI 1500V islatin (standard BRI S/T cables) PRI 1500V islatin Ethernet 1500V islatin (CAT5 r better) The Wanderbx Du is designed t supprt secndary (intrabuilding) surge prtectin standards ONLY. Where cables cnnected t Wanderbx Du FXS and FXO prts may be expsed t extrabuilding envirnments, suitable primary surge prtectin mechanisms MUST be utilised. Refer t sectin 4.7 belw fr further details. Far Suth Netwrks DOES NOT recmmend installatin f BRI and Ethernet prts with cabling expsed t extrabuilding cnditins. 4.2 Surge prtectin fr Wanderbx Du analgue interface 4.3 Overcurrent prtectin A telefuse device is used t guarantee fire safety in the event f pwer crss events. These devices d nt recver after activatin, i.e. the circuit ges pen in respnse t an vercurrent. Unit replacement r repair will be required after such an ccurrence. 4.4 Overvltage prtectin Electrnic cmpnents have been designed t functin prperly when used within their specified current and vltage ratings. When these ratings are exceeded during peratin, the cmpnent may sustain permanent damage and the equipment may cease t perate. Slidstate thyristr vervltage prtectin devices are prvided t affrd standardscmpliant secndary prtectin. These devices are designed t switch rapidly frm a high t a lw impedance state in respnse t an vervltage surge, cnducting the surge t chassis grund and away frm the vulnerable cmpnents. In telecmmunicatin applicatins, the majr surces f vervltage cnditins are lightning, AC pwer lines, and grund shifts. Thyristr surge suppressrs are used as shunt devices, cnducting large currents away frm sensitive electrnic devices, when their threshld vltage is exceeded. Gd earthing practice is vital t ensure the effectiveness f these prtectin devices. 4.5 FXO interface prtectin circuit The FXO prt line interface circuit is shwn belw. Bth vercurrent and vervltage devices are prvisined n each line interface. The vervltage prtectin device, Littlefuse P3100, will clamp at V(drm) = 275V

Bth vercurrent and vervltage devices are prvisined n each line interface. The vervltage prtectin device, Littlefuse P1301, will clamp at V(drm) = 120V Figure4: FXS prt circuit example Primary prtectin must be prvided externally t the Wanderbx Du unit if the wiring leaves the premises. 4.7 Primary Surge prtectin Primary surge devices must be prvisined externally t the Wanderbx Du, t prvide crdinated prtectin fr the Cmma interfaces in cnjunctin with the secndary prtectin that is built int the unit. Wanderbx Du des NOT supprt primary prtectin levels fr interfaces expsed t utdr envirnments. Far Suth Netwrks recmmend installatin f primary surge prtectin devices (GDT Gas Discharge Tube) installed n all analgue lines expsed t extrabuilding cnditins. The pwer surge arresters are usually lcated in a distributin bard sme distance away. The MDF backframe is used as the prtectin platfrm typically cntaining krnestyle cnnectin blcks with primary surge arrester munted theren. An earth pint is then created as clse as pssible t the surge arresters and the electrical, building and ther earths are then cnnected t this pint.
