9 Introducton The drve DAT 72 USB (DDS Gen5) 36/72 GBYTE s a drve for magnetc tape cartrdges wth a storage capacty of 36 Gbyte (wthout compresson) or 72 Gbyte (wth 2:1 compresson). The drve DAT 72 USB (DDS Gen5) 36/72 GBYTE s avalable n two models: as a 5 ¼ nch (H950) and as a 3 ½ nch verson (H961). Ths manual apples for both varants. Explct reference s made to any dfferences. The drve s a mass storage whch s especally suted for the followng applcatons: Backup of hard dsk drves Data archvng Data acquston Data exchange Software dstrbuton Emergency recovery Functons The DAT drve can be connected to any USB 2.0 port and s therefor ready-to-use n less than 60 seconds DDS cartrdges wth a 60 m, 90 m and 120 m tape length are not supported. The DAT drve s equpped wth the followng propertes/functons: 2.0 USB nterface (Unversal Seral Bus) a USB type B connector (4pn) a memory capacty of 36.0 Gbyte (wthout compresson) or 72.0 Gbyte (wth 2:1-compresson). a maxmum contnuous data transfer rate of up to 3.0 MB per second wthout compresson an nternal buffer of 8 MB Ths manual contans all the nformaton you requre to nstall and operate the drve. Notes on savng energy Devces that do not have to be swtched on permanently should not be swtched on untl they are used and should be swtched off durng long breaks and upon completon of work. Take-back, recyclng and dsposal The devce may not be dsposed of wth household rubbsh. Ths applance s labelled n accordance wth European Drectve 2002/96/EC concernng used electrcal and electronc applances (waste electrcal and electronc equpment - WEEE). The gudelne determnes the framework for the return and recyclng of used applances as applcable throughout the EU. 13 Cleanng notes The read/wrte heads of the drve must be cleaned regularly to ensure that no errors occur durng data processng.! Do not carry out preventatve cleanng. Wat untl the drve requests cleanng. The drve should be cleaned mmedately followng the request. Never use an audo cleanng cartrdge. Use only cleanng cartrdges desgned for ths drve. Do not carry out wet cleanng! Cleanng must be carred out mmedately when a TapeAlert message appears on the screen or the CLEAN ndcator on the DAT drve flashes slowly. The cleanng ntervals are prmarly dependent on how many cartrdges you read/wrte n the drve (see secton "Meanng of the LED ndcators").! When cleanng the read/wrte head follow the nstructons ncluded wth the cleanng cartrdge. Do not carry out wet cleanng! Please note the followng basc rule: Cartdges DDS-3, DDS-4, DAT 72 or Number of cartrdges per day 1 cartrdge 2 cartrdges 3 cartrdges 4 or more cartrdges Cleanng every 70 hours Cleanng Once a week Twce a week Three tmes a week Every day Never rewnd a cleanng cartrdge! One cleanng cartrdge lasts for up to 50 cleanng operatons, dependng on sze. After that the cleanng cartrdge cannot be reused! S26361-H950-V200 Englsh - 5

14 Insert the cleanng cartrdge nto the drve. The drve automatcally cleans the read/wrte heads when the cartrdge s pulled n. The cleanng cartrdge s then automatcally ejected. Make a note of the cleanng date on the cleanng cartrdge label so that you know how many tmes the cartrdge has been used. If the power-on ndcator and/or the warnng ndcator flashes agan mmedately after cleanng, the data cartrdge s probably too worn to be used for much longer. In ths case, you should copy the data to a new cartrdge and stop usng the old cartrdge. Cleanng cartrdges wth a length of 60 m may not be used or are not supported. Cleanng cartrdges may be subject to varatons n qualty. Ths can lead to restrctons n maxmum use. Please read the leaflet ncluded wth the cleanng cartrdge your have selected for nformaton on maxmum use. The drve wll automatcally eject an expred cartrdge. 6 - Englsh S26361-H950-V200

15 Notes on workng wth magnetc tape cartrdges Although magnetc tape cartrdges do not requre any specal mantenance, some basc rules should be followed:! General The cartrdges must be kept out of drect sunlght. The cartrdges are not to be placed near magnetc felds. Avod heavy mechancal loadng. Do not nsert damaged magnetc tape cartrdges n the drve. Falure to observe ths warnng may lead to the warranty for the drve beng voded. Avod major, short-term temperature fluctuatons. Condensaton must be avoded! When operatng The cartrdges are not to be operated n hgh-humdty and n dusty envronments. Do not remove the magnetc tape cartrdge from the drve whle t s beng read or wrtten. Do not swtch off the system whle a magnetc tape cartrdge s beng read or wrtten. Always leave the protectve cover over the openng for the wrte/read head. Never touch the magnetc tape. New magnetc tape cartrdges should be acclmatzed to the ambent temperature up to four hours pror to use. Storage Always observe the condtons for storng archvng cartrdges (see the chapter "Techncal data"). The cartrdges are not to be stored n hgh-humdty and n dusty envronments. Always keep the magnetc tape cartrdges n the protectve covers provded. The cartrdges must never be stored n hgh temperatures. Do not store magnetc tape cartrdges n stacks of more than sx hgh. Condensaton must be avoded! The maxmum capacty of 36/72 Gbyte s reached, for example, when a magnetc tape cartrdge of the type "DAT 72" s used. How to order magnetc tape cartrdges and cleanng cartrdges Magnetc tape cartrdges and cleanng cartrdges (for dry cleanng) can be ordered wth the Fujtsu Semens Computers prce lst (SysARC, PC-ARC). 16 Installng a drve! Please note the nformaton provded n the operatng manual of the computer or n the "Safety and Ergonomcs" booklet. The followng steps must be performed to nstall the drve: Mountng the drve Connectng the drve Current drvers, Frmware and Tools are on the TapeSupport CD on the Internet on the Internet ftp://ftp.fujtsu-semens.com/fsc/supportcds/ Installng a drve Dependng on the model the drve requres a 5 ¼ nch slot (H950) or a 3 1/2 nch "half-heght" slot (H961). The drve can be nstalled horzontally or vertcally.! When mountng the drve, ensure that the ventlaton slts on the drve are kept free. Ê Install the drve as descrbed n the Operatng Manual or Techncal Manual for the computer. Connectng the drve 1 = USB type B nterface 2 = Power supply connector Plug the USB cable nto the USB type B nterface of the drve (1). 17 Usng a drve 1 = Tape LED 2 = clean LED! 3 = Eject button When a cartrdge s removed, the cartrdge door may reman open. In ths case, make sure that the cartrdge door s closed agan. Otherwse, the drve may be damaged. 18 Meanng of the LED ndcators Three ndcators on the front of the DAT drve show the status of the drve and/or of the nserted cartrdge. The ndcators can be constantly brght or flash n varous ways. Indcators Tape Tape LED Cleanng Clean LED Drve state on - The drve s ready for use, a cartrdge s nserted. flashes slowly - A cartrdge s beng drawn n or ejected flashes quckly - A cartrdge s beng read or wrtten. - on There s a fault n the drve. - flashes slowly The drve must be cleaned. If the drve needs to be cleaned, follow the nstructons gven n the "Cleanng" secton. If there s a fault n the drve, please contact your sales outlet or customer servce center. Handlng magnetc tape cartrdges Use only DDS cartrdges marked wth "DAT" or "DDS Meda Recognton System". The logo guarantees that the cartrdges are sutable for recordng data. Although tape cartrdges do not requre any specal mantenance, some basc rules should be followed: Avod subjectng the tape cartrdges to hgh temperatures or drect sunlght. The cartrdges are not to be stored or operated n hgh-humdty. The cartrdges are not to be placed near magnetc felds. As a rule, new cartrdges should be wound forward once to the end of the tape and rewound to the begnnng, and the drve then cleaned usng a cleanng cartrdge. Do not swtch off the computer or remove a cartrdge from the drve whle the cartrdge s beng accessed. Never touch the magnetc tape. The contact protecton must always cover the openng for the read/wrte heads. Use only standard labels and stck only one label onto the part ntended for labels. Falure to observe these basc rules can endanger the operablty of your DAT drve. Usng Wrte-protecton Wrte protecton enables you to protect a cartrdge aganst nadvertent overwrtng or deleton. When the cartrdge s wrte-protected, the system can read data, but can nether overwrte nor delete data. 19 Slde the wrte-protecton swtch to the rght or left nto the desred poston. When the swtch s set to the wrte-protecton poston, no data can be wrtten to the tape. When the swtch s n the non-wrte-protected poston, data can be wrtten to the tape. Loadng a cartrdge! When nsertng the magnetc tape cartrdge, ensure that the label sde s facng up. The sde on whch the tape s vsble must be on the rght. Ê Lft the cartrdge door. Ê Slde the cartrdge slowly nto the drve untl the autoload mechansm starts pullng the cartrdge n. The power-on ndcator lghts up green after ntalzaton. Unloadng a cartrdge Ê Press the control button. The ongong command s termnated and buffered data wll be wrtten to the tape. Then the band s rewound. Ths may take up to three mnutes. The magnetc tape cartrdge wll then be ejected from the unloadng mechansm. Ths may take up to 13 seconds. Ê Remove the tape cartrdge from the drve. Emergency unload of magnetc tape cartrdge If an emergency removal of the magnetc tape cartrdge s necessary, please contact your customer servce center. 20 Troubleshootng Gettng Started Check whether the drve s ready for use an recognzed. Check that you are usng the latest verson of the Prmergy server frmware and host controller frmware (SCSI, SAS or USB). Current drvers, frmware and fools you can get under Check that you are usng the correct approved drvers of the operatng system and the backup applcaton. Current drvers, frmware and fools you can get under Check that you are usng the correct servce packs, patches or updates for the operatng system and the backup applcaton. For addtonal nformaton, refer to the support pages of the operatng system or backup applcaton supplers. Drve s not ready for use or s not recognzed Check whether the LED ndcators of the drve are lghtng durng/after swtchng on the server. If not, check that the cable for the power supply of the drve s correctly connected. Check whether the LED ndcators of the drve are ndcatng a falure status. Frst elmnate ths falure status. If possble, carry out a self-test of the drve. For Mcrosoft operatng systems: check whether a yellow exclamaton mark or a red cross s shown n the Devce Manager next to a HOST controller or a drve. If so, unnstall and renstall the drvers. Check whether the data lne (SCSI, SAS or USB) s properly connected to the HOST controller and drve, and that none of the pns n the connector are bent. For SCSI: check whether the data lne s connected on the LVD port of the Host controller. For SCSI: Dependng on the confguraton, an addtonal SCSI termnator may have to be connected to the end of the data cable. For SCSI: check whether the settng of the SCSI ID s correct. The SCSI ID of the drve must not be egal wth the SCSI ID of the SCSI controller or other SCSI devces. Remove the tape from the drve. Restart your PRIMERGY server and ensure that the drve wll be recognsed. The drve should now be ready for operaton. If not, please contact the Fujtsu Semens hotlne. Devce does not accept a medum Check whether the drve s ready for use an recognzed. Check whether the drve must be cleaned. To determne whether ths s the case, check the Use Cleanng Tape lght. Use a new medum and check whether t s accepted. The drve should accept the medum now. If not, please contact the Fujtsu Semens hotlne Englsh S26361-H950-V200

21 Devce does not eject a medum Check whether the drve s executng a Format Recovery. Dependng on the drve type, ths may take several hours, durng whch tme the status ndcator blnks constantly. The medum can only be removed after ths process s completed. The drve should eject the medum now. If not, please contact the Fujtsu Semens hotlne. The medum cannot be wrtten Check whether the drve s ready for use an recognzed. Check whether the wrte protecton of the medum s actvated. Check whether the drve must be cleaned. To determne whether ths s the case, check the Use Cleanng Tape lght. Use a new medum and check f t s accepted and f a wrte process s possble. The drve should wrte the medum now. If not, please contact the Fujtsu Semens hotlne. Problems wth performance and wth read/wrte operatons. For SCSI: Check that the drve s connected to the correct SCSI port of the host controller (onboard or PCI card). The drve should only be connected to the LVD port wth the correct speed (Ultra2, Ultra160 or Ultra 320)! For USB: Check that the drve s connected to the correct USB port of the host controller (onboard or PCI network card). The drve should only be connected to the USB 2.0 port. For USB: Check whether the USB port of the host controller (onboard or PCI network card) to whch the drve s connected s also connected to USB 1.1 devces. The drve must only be connected to the same bus as USB 2.0 devces. Check whether the drve must be cleaned. To determne whether ths s the case, check the Use Cleanng Tape lght. Check that the operatng system has been confgured to ensure that t performs at ts maxmum potental. For example, check the hardware compresson, regstry settngs for SCSI and SAS block szes (for SCSI Controller Adaptec and Fujtsu Semens D1305, for example). Check whether the data for the backup s defragmented and whether the data source (for example, the hard dsk) can supply the data at a suffcent speed (performance of the data source, organsaton/structure of the data). Check whether data can be compressed. If the data can be compressed, enable hardware compresson on the drve. If the data cannot be compressed, dsable hardware compresson on the drve. Use the backup applcaton to do so. The drve should now perform as expected durng read/wrte operatons and no problems should occur If not, please contact the Fujtsu Semens hotlne.
