For more iformatio o assigig chaels, see Chagig Chaels o page 133. I the above examples, some chaels are used for actual broadcast while others are reserved for off-air browsig, hotswappig, ad mirrored playout purposes. A hotswap chael takes the place of a stadard playout chael i the group should that chael fail, ad it retais the origial chael s ame for playout purposes. Commad displays a ico o the Chael toolbar to idicate whe a hotswap occurs. For more iformatio, see Chael Group Icos o page 182. Although the hotswap chael i Commad retais the origial ame of the failed chael, it is still a differet physical chael. So, to achieve playout, the perso at the switcher must be aware of its physical chael locatio whe takig the hotswap chael to air. 111

Workig with Chael Groups i a Shotbox Lockig a Chael Group Chael group locks pertai to cotrol of playout o chaels i a group. 117 5 inews Itegratio The inews Commad system is a device automatio system for o-air operatios, which ca be itegrated ito the inews ewsroom computer system, or ito aother MOS-eabled ewsroom computer system. The iterface betwee Avid inews Commad ad the Avid inews ewsroom computer system provides for rudow updates betwee the products. Commad ca also operate i a stadaloe eviromet if the Avid inews coectio is lost. This chapter cotais the followig mai sectios: Overview Isertig Machie Cotrol Evets ito Stories - Usig the Deko Select Plug-i - Auto-assigig Media IDs Loadig Rudows to Commad - Loadig ad Uloadig Playlists from inews - Evet List Queue - Composite Queue - Item Status After Load to Commad Chagig Chaels

Overview Overview This sectio provides a overview of the Avid inews workspace ad istructios o differet methods for isertig machie cotrol evets ito scripts i inews for the inews Commad system. The Avid inews workspace cosists of three mai paels: Pael Name Directory pael Queue pael Story pael Descriptio The portio of the workspace that displays the directory or file structure of the Avid inews database. The portio of the workspace that displays a list of stories i a queue. Stories are added, deleted, moved, ad ordered through this pael. The portio of the workspace that displays the story text; however, the pael might be split, as show i the figure below, ito the followig three subpaels: Istructio pael for productio cues ad machie cotrol istructios. It appears o the bottom left side o the Story pael. Story Form pael cotaiig fields for data typically appearig i the queue (rudow). It appears across the top of the Story pael. Story Text pael cotaiig the script of a story ad productio cue markers also kow as grommets that coicide with productio cues ad machie cotrol istructios i the Istructio pael. It appears o the bottom right side of the Story pael. The Story Text pael is the oly subpael that always appears; the other two might be removed from view by users at inews Workstatios. 118

Isertig Machie Cotrol Evets ito Stories Isertig Machie Cotrol Evets ito Stories Users caot add machie cotrol evets to a ewsroom playlist from a Commad Workstatio. This does ot apply to stadaloe playlists, which could be a discoected ewsroom playlist. For more o how to edit stadaloe playlists, see Workig with Stadaloe Playlists o page 87. For ewsroom playlists, the inews Workstatio provides a scriptig fuctio that places uformatted stories ito a split-scree script format with productio cues, i the left colum (referred to as the Istructio pael) ad story text i the right colum (referred to as the Story Text pael).productio cues might iclude the followig: Take VO, O Camera, Take SOT, Take Live, ad so forth. Whe iterfacig with inews Commad, productio cues i the inews ewsroom computer system might iclude commads for devices, such as character geerators (CGs) ad high-resolutio video servers. By default, Avid inews geerally refers to all video playback devices for istace, Avid AirSpeed video servers as video type devices. A productio cue cotaiig a commad for a device is kow as a machie cotrol evet. Each commad is preceded by a asterisk (*) ad should be writte i a special format. The format for machie cotrol evets, followig the asterisk, starts with a code for the type of device the istructio is for, such as CG for a character geerator or Deko for a Avid Deko graphics system. For Commad, this code ame for the device is the ame of the chael group. After the commad, the format specifies a particular item or template. If additioal commets or iformatio, such as replaceable text, is required it would follow o succeedig lies i the same Productio Cue text box. For example, i inews, a machie cotrol evet for a 2-lie character geerator graphic might look like the oe show below: Istructio Pael Productio Cue Text Box Machie Cotrol Evet for a Character Geerator Story Text Pael 119

Isertig Machie Cotrol Evets ito Stories I the above example, the Story pael is split to show both the Istructio ad Story Text paels, but ot the Story Form pael. The Take VO productio cue is iformatio for the director; it is ot a machie cotrol evet. The machie cotrol evet for the character geerator is i the secod Productio Cue text box. Machie cotrol evet formats will vary based o styles set up by your system admiistrator. Check with your system admiistrator for a list of styles used at your locatio. To isert a machie cotrol evet ito a inews story: 1. From a inews Workstatio, ope the script ito the Story pael. 2. Click i the Story pael at the locatio where the productio cue is to be placed. 3. Type Alt+Isert. A Istructio pael appears to the left of the Story Text pael.the Istructio pael has a Productio Cue text box where the cursor is placed so that a productio cue ca be etered. A productio cue marker (also kow as a grommet) is iserted i the script text at the cursor positio. 120

Usig the Deko Select Plug-i Creatig Multi-Triggered Graphics Commad supports a automated, multi-triggered graphics workflow that lets users specify I times ad duratios for graphics via the Deko Select plug-i i inews, ad have Commad sed Play ad Eject commads whe the story s video reaches the appropriate times. To create multi-triggered graphics: 1. From a inews Workstatio, create the graphic item with the Deko Select plug-i, settig the I time the time of the first trigger ad also specifyig the duratio, which is whe the item should be ejected. 2. Create the secod graphic item, settig the I time for whe the secod trigger should be set. The duratio eeds to be set to zero (0). 3. Cotiue as eeded, creatig ay additioal items to cover the remaiig triggers. The duratio eeds to be set to zero (0). The followig illustratio shows a example of a multi-triggered graphic with three fields of fulfillmet data created with the Deko Select plug-i as it would appear as a machie cotrol commad i the Istructio pae of a Avid inews story. I the example, the I ad Out times are show, rather tha the duratio. The item s first trigger is at 5 secods, the secod at 10 secods, the third at 15 secods. The followig illustratio shows the same graphic as it appears i Commad after the ewsroom playlist is loaded. The first item is the oly oe that appears active. The secod ad third items are igored. 126

Loadig Rudows to Commad The appearace of these items i the playlist may be customized. For more iformatio, see Customizig the Playlist Viewer o page 62. The item plays at 5 secods (the first trigger), the goes to a Pause state to idicate that there are additioal triggers, as show i the followig illustratio. The subsequet triggers i the example will happe at 10 ad 15 secods, after which the item will go to a Doe state ad the eject at 25 secods. Loadig Rudows to Commad This sectio provides some basic user iformatio about the Avid inews moitor server, which is used to load inews rudows to Commad. The moitor server is ot a actual part of Avid inews Commad software, but is a utility program o the inews Server. For inews Commad, it is used to sca stories i the inews rudow, check that show s evet requests for errors, ad search for machie cotrol evets to build evet lists (playlists) for the productio devices. It cotiues moitorig the rudow for chages to machie cotrol evets ad seds them to the inews Commad system util the show goes off the air. The system admiistrator must set up moitor servers o inews Servers to esure proper itegratio betwee Avid inews Commad ad a inews ewsroom computer system. The moitor server is tured o whe a user at a inews Workstatio turs it o. Whe o, moitor server checks its assiged rudow for machie cotrol evets, ad builds playlists. It cotiues to moitor the rudow for chages ad performs as much error checkig as it ca without commuicatig with ay broadcast equipmet, icludig Commad. The moitor server loads data to the Commad system whe a user istructs it to do so from a inews Workstatio. It is recommeded that producers or productio assistats tur the moitor server o as show time approaches so it ca check the rudow queue throughout much of the show s developmet. Moitor server scas through the scripts ad builds Evet Lists for CG ad video if these evets are preset i the scripts. Moitor server will also create a Composite list if cofigured to do so. Istructig the moitor server to load data should be doe later, such as just before takig the show to air. 127

Loadig Rudows to Commad Loadig ad Uloadig Playlists from inews The moitor server is used to moitor playlists before broadcastig, load ewsroom playlists to Commad ad uload them. To load a playlist from Avid inews to Commad, usig the moitor server: 1. Log i to a inews Workstatio. 2. Ope the appropriate rudow i the Queue pael. 3. Select Tools > Moitor. The Moitor dialog box opes. The system displays the curret status for ad ame of all devices available for the opeed rudow. The duratio (or automatic quit time, if cofigured) appears at the bottom of the dialog box. For more iformatio, see Duratio o page

Loadig Rudows to Commad 4. Select a moitor mode based o the followig optios: Optio O Load Uload Off Descriptio Turs the moitor server o ad creates a evet list for each device i the rudow queue. Istructs the moitor server to load evet lists to devices you select. See Moitor LOAD o page 130 for more iformatio. Discoects from the selected device or server without turig the moitor server off. (If all devices/servers are uloaded, the moitor server returs to the O mode. See Moitor Off ad Uload o page 131 for more iformatio. Turs the moitor server off, overridig the Duratio settig. See Moitor Off ad Uload o page 131 for more iformatio. If you select Load, specify the device or server to load from the Devices list, or select the All Devices checkbox to load all devices associated with the rudow queue. To select up to three devices from the list, without selectig all, press the Ctrl key while you click o each item. If you select a server, the data will be loaded to all devices associated with that server. 129

Loadig Rudows to Commad Duratio Moitor server uses a large amout of system resources. If moitor servers are left o after the ed of their shows, they could degrade the efficiecy of the Avid inews system. To protect system resources, a quit time or a duratio ca be set by the system admiistrator. A quit time will automatically switch off the moitor server at the specified time, esurig the itegrity of the system. A duratio will automatically switch off the moitor server after the allotted time is achieved. However, for the best results, Avid recommeds that moitor servers be maually tured off at the ed of each show. If cofigured, the quit time or duratio time appears at the bottom of the Moitor dialog box. The moitor server s quit time or duratio is determied by cofiguratio settigs i the SYSTEM.MAP story of inews. For more iformatio, see the inews documetatio for system admiistratio ad cofiguratio. Moitor LOAD Before Commad is able to view the list of machie cotrol evets (kow as items i Commad) i a inews rudow ad cotrol those evets for playback, they must be loaded from the rudow i inews. For more iformatio o usig moitor server to load evets from a ewsroom rudow to inews Commad, see Loadig Rudows to Commad o page 127. Evets are loaded from Avid inews to Commad ad the commuicated to appropriate devices. After Commad receives the etire list, it will otify the user that it has received the list by sedig a message to the inews Workstatio. Cofirmatio messages might look like the followig: LIST RECEIVED SHOW.5P.Rudow SHOW.5P.RUNDOWN: Dowload Complete If the moitor server is ot o, loadig evets will automatically switch the moitor server o. 130

Loadig Rudows to Commad Moitor Off ad Uload Moitor Off is used after the show is over. Switchig the moitor server off stops the system from scaig scripts for updates ad sedig those updates to Commad. If a user at a Commad Workstatio discoects the show, the broadcast ca cotiue with playout cotrolled from that workstatio istead of the ewsroom computer system; however, o updates to the rudow from Avid inews will be received i Commad ad o chages to the discoected playlist are set to inews. Turig the moitor server off, back o, ad loadig it will create a ew ewsroom playlist i the Playlist Explorer, which will bear the same ame as the origial discoected playlist. Moitor Uload clears the playlist, if Commad has ot discoected it from the show, but cotiues to sca the scripts ad update the evet lists with chages. Turig off the moitor server while the chael groups for the rudow are still locked i Commad creates a discoected playlist. Such discoected playlists must be maually deleted by the user. Evet List Queue After the moitor server is o for a few secods, evet lists are built. I inews, the Evet List queues each oe represetig a differet chael group are geerally built i the same folder as the rudow, such as: Rudow:SHOW.6PM.RUNDOWN CG Evet List:SHOW.6PM.CG Video Evet List:SHOW.6PM.VIDEO The ame of the evet list queue i inews must match the ame of the chael group i Commad for evets to appear. Ay script or rudow chages will be picked up automatically by the moitor server, which will the make the appropriate chages i the evet lists.
